I just saw a video title on YouTube that said something like โWhy is glass transparent?โ And thatโs an interesting question and Iโm sure itโs great that the video exists but my first thought was like โBecause glass is terrible, obviously.โ Because itโs unwieldy and letโs out warmth and needs to be heated to hundreds of degrees to be shaped and turns into hundreds of tiny daggers if you drop it. Why the hell would we bother with that if it didnโt have some magical quality like being totally transparent despite being solid? Glass is transparent because if it werenโt, weโd use something else.
looking through my โmeโ tag and this is apparently what I was thinking 3 years ago
If youโre still curious we did not start working glass for its transparency.ย It was most likely started as a sanitary concern.ย Glass is easy to clean with soap and water, once itโs cleaned out you can use it again for anything and no germs or flavor from the previous meal or drink will remain.
Other materials at the time, namely clay, would absorb flavors and germs meaning that if you ate beef off a clay plate your next meal with that plate could have beef flavor and microbes common on cow meat on it.ย That would leak out seemingly at random no less.ย Heck imagine a sick person coughing into their soup bowl and then months later their germs hiding in the clay would pop out to infect whole new people.
Also the earliest human use of glass we know of is for its sharpness.ย Pre-historic people would use volcanic glass as sharp knives for food preparation.ย Also beads.ย Pretty much any new substance humans get their hands on for most of our history we immediately try to make into beads.
The fact that it could become see through was a side benefit.
this is amazing and Iโm really glad I reblogged that old bullshit post because I got to learn this
Also, early glass was Not transparent! Thatโs actually a fairly recent innovation. In order for glass to be transparent, especially to be clear, the silica sand has to be a certain level of purity, so before we could filter and refine it to that point, glass was opaque!

credit where credit is due, he didnโt fall for it. i was 100% expecting him to make shit up but he knew what he was talking about.
Iโm glad that OP:
1) Figured this out.
2) Shared so others can learn from their mistake.

There is so much casual ableism towards people with intellectual-cognitive disabilities. I was listening to a podcast I listen to religiously (and is a very very leftist podcast) and they hit me with the "you'll understand this unless you are Three Years Old." And it was something I didn't understand. And this podcast (that I love!) does this quite frequently. The hosts would never purposely make fun of someone for their disability- but they say things like "no one is that stupid" or similar quite frequently. And as someone who is that stupid- it kinda fucking sucks.
out of all kinds of people, even among disabled people , we are among some of the most vulnerable largely because the idea of us existing in and participating in society like a person is completely unfathomable to almost EVERYONE . like u said , even people who are leftist strongly in every single other way .
just had a really good mango it was so good that i had to illustrate how it made me feel afterwards.
opโs tags are so fucking important to me
We need to conquer space travel for the only reason that zero-g would allow for new never before seen pastries, you know how the top of the muffin is the best part? Well that is because it is exposed to air so it changes the chemistry, in normal earth gravity it is impossible to make a muffin that is all top part because it needs to be placed somewhere which would restrict air flow, however in zero g it would be possible to make a bubble out of muffin dough which gets optimal airflow and becomes an all-top part muffin... This is the dream...

fake Goncharov fans donโt even realize that Scorsese did NOT direct the 1973 cult classic. he was executive producer. ๐คฆโโ๏ธ
The actual director is Natted JWHJ0715, and they deserve credit!!!
It's Matteo JWHJ0715!!!!! Very talented director (italian mother, license plate father)

my sister has apparently had to stop playing Skyrim because she stole every book in the game to stock her house so now her house is full of books to the point where it almost breaks the game and every time she tries to read one guards teleport into her home and arrest her
