      connor doesn’t know how to describe his head.   maybe it’s like a maze with thick green fences and this heavy fog that’s always,  always kept him going ‘round and ‘round.    or maybe it’s just like an abandoned city covered with high walls that connor can never climb to get through it.   but he knows it’s messy.   and it’s uncoordinated and there’re rarely ever a happy ending to this fucked-up thing they called his mental illness,  and   -    and whenever he gets deep into it,  startling him out from it has   -   it never ends well.   so when zoe’s voice got through,   connor’s quick to defend  :    body flinching backwards,   arms almost flying out to attack first.   apart of him is sorry,   sorry that he’s born this way,   sorry that he can’t be better even if he wants to   (  so so so much  )   but the anger is familiar and quick when it manifests,  pushing connor to bare his teeth,   growling.   like an animal.

          CHILLING   FEAR   courses   through   her   body   at   how   volatile   her   brother   is   becoming      &      it’s   heartbreaking      .       the   same   fear   that   made   zoe   remain   passive      &      idle   probably   contributed   to   her   brother’s   suicide      &      it   did   nothing   but   melt   a   hole   down   the   pit   of  her   stomach      .      what   if   she   actually   tried   to   get   along   with   him   than   continuously   screaming   at   him      ?      would   he   have   not   been   found   at   the   park   with   the   bottle   of   pills   stolen  from   the   medicine   cabinet      ?

          come   on      ,      zoe      .      swallow   your   fear      .      help   your   brother      .      god      ,      the   voice   almost   sounds   like   her   mother      .  .  .      or   is   it  her   own      ?      like   if   she   could   tell      .      hard   lump   lodged   in   throat   is   swallowed      ,      she’s   desperately   commanding   her   brain   to   send   signal   to   her   legs   to   unglue   themselves   from   his   floor      &      just   walk   up   to   him      .      deep   breaths      &      she’s   walking   towards   the   dragon      ,      her   sword   nothing   but   slender   arms   gingerly   wrapping   around   his   form      (   she   knows   she   could   get   physically   hurt   )      but   it   doesn’t   scare   her      .

                    “Zoe what’s going on?” Cynthia asks her daughter, she would love to know what is going on with at least one of her children. Maybe she might have a better chance with Zoe then she had Connor, but that didn’t mean she would stop trying with her son.

          things   were   chaotic   at   the   murphy’s   since   connor   was   found   passed   out   at   the   park   bottle  of   pills   in   hand      .      now   he   was   in   a   coma      &      no   one   knew   what   the   outcome  of   this   was   going   to   be      &      it   honestly   terrified   zoe      .      the   teenager   knows   mother’s   instinct   is   always   going   to   set   off   the   ‘   something   is   wrong   with   my   children  !   ’   alarm      &      she   sure   did   ding   it   right   on   the   head   of   the   nail   with   zoe      .

          ❝     is   connor   -----   is   connor   going   to   be   okay      ,      mom      ?     ❞      it   felt   foreign   for   her   to   ask   that      ,      almost   felt   like   a   rock   was   purging   out   of   her   throat      .      as   much   as   she   resented   connor   for   his   treatment   towards  her      &      taking   attention   away   from   her   parents   from   zoe   to   him      ,      the   worry      &      guilt   was   definitely   present      .

          he doesn’t care for hearing the familiar voice treading so lightly into his territory .  cynthia would force this kind of interaction on the two – making them probably as uncomfortable as the other .  he swung his legs off his bed and shuffled to the door, pulling it open swiftly .

          “ do you always do exactly as cynthia says ? or just when it bothers me ? “ connor cringed at his own words and took a step back , a silent peace offering for her to enter his room .

          she   doesn’t   get   why   her   mother   forces   these   kinds  of   interactions   between   her      &      connor      .      especially   after   tense   moments   like   his   attempted   suicide   attempt      .      it’s   like   cynthia  didn’t   want   to   play   the   uncomfortable   role   of   police      &      sitter   so   she   has   zoe   take   the   job   instead      .      silent   peace   offering   is   appreiciated      &      she   steps   inside   his   room   gingerly   as  if   she’s   afraid   one   wrong   move   would   elicit   an   angry   tantrum   from   her   brother      .      she  doesn’t   take   a  seat   but   stands   awkwardly      &      god   she   feels   so   out   of   place   here      .

          ❝     you   know   how   mom   is      .      if   i   don’t   then   they’re   going   to   have   one   huge   fight   at   breakfast   tomorrow      &      i   know   you   don’t   want   to   have   a   screaming   match   with   dad   so   just   -----   cooperate     ,      okay      ?     ❞      ouch      .      she   sounds   like   an   asshole   but   she   stays   quiet   as   awkwardness   fills   up   the   room   possibly   suffocating   both  her      &      her   brother      .      they   just   seemed   so   far   away      &      it   wasn’t   always   like   this      .      there   were   moments  with   a   little   bit   of   light      .      picnics   at   the   orchard   when   they   were   kids      ,      running   around   freely   without   a   care   in   the   world      &      he   was   happy   above   all      .       now   it   was   different      ,      they  only   seemed   to   be   sharing   the   same   flesh      &      blood   than   having   an   actual   real   bond      &      to   be   honest   his   attempt   scared   her      .      sure   he   could   be   monstrous   at   times      ,      sure   there   were   past   attempts   but   this   one   was   the   one   she   SERIOUSLY   thought   she’d   lose   connor   for   good      .

          she   didn’t   want   to   be   here      again      .      the   sterile   smell   of   the   hospital      ,      the   whiteness   of   the   room      .      but   this   time       she   didn’t   think   her   brother   would   actually   be   nearly   gone      .      cynthia      &      larry   already   left   connor   in   the   room   as   larry   complained   he   had   an   early   day   tomorrow      &      her   mom   was   too   stressed   out   to   be   in   the   room   any   longer      .      cellphone   in   hand   fingers   are   plucking   at   invisible   strings   of   an   invisible   guitar   maybe   a   memorized   piece   from   jazz   as   the   dial   tone   clicks      &      gone   straight   to   voice   mail      .      ❝     joyce      ?      it’s   zoe      .      umm   connor      .  .  .      we’re   at   the   hospital   -----   connor   tried   to   kill   himself     .      mom      &      dad   already   left   saying   dad   had   an   early   day   tomorrow      &      mom’s   too   distressed      .      i   umm   thought   you   hould   know   if   you   want   to   come   by      ?   well   yeah      ,      come   by   if   you   want   umm   bye      .     ❞
