“When you used to see Scully in her apartment, she was completely happy, self-sufficient, with her dog, watching Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” [Gillian] Anderson says. “This time around it seems she’s made some decisions: She’s getting on with her life and is doing what is meaningful to her. She’s showing up and being assertive. But you sense, even though she’s self-sufficient, that there’s a hole. And I like that it sits there, not filled, and that eventually, as she and Mulder start to work together again, the sense of something missing goes away. What was missing in her life is back.”
Yes! I love that she played it this way. That while the work Scully does at the hospital is meaningful the work with Mulder is far more exciting, dangerous, and mysterious. Its the challenge that fills her.

(might be an) unpopular opinion: the “if you weren’t ugly i’d kiss you” scene in dreamland ii is THE most romantic and saddest moment in msr history. i mean just look at the sadness in her eyes when scully had to tell mulder and herself the cruel fact that the man she loves will forever be trapped in another person’s body, and realizes they will never be together, that SHE HAS LOST THE CHANCE TO BE WITH MULDER FOR GOOD. the regrets they must’ve been thinking about, the moments when they could’ve been together but kept missing each other. why else would scully, who has kept her distance professionally all these years, say that?? we hear “i’d kiss you if you weren’t so damn ugly”, but she’s actually saying “I LOVE YOU AND FAREWELL MY LOVE”, and mulder is saying the same thing by giving her those sunflower seeds😭😭😭
both gifs are made by @katebeckets and are from here! thanks for her reminder and wonderful work 🫶
some prompt words! bruise, lipstick, stained glass, lighter, rain
post-anasazi/blessing way/paper clip, bc what else do you watch with a fever of 100.1?
“Does this tie say, ‘sorry I collared you in the hallway of our workplace, I was under the influence of LSD’? Or is it just ugly?”
“I got fired in my best suit.” Scully is fully dressed, trim on the edge of Mulder’s couch. Today, like yesterday but not the day before, she wears black. She’s staring at the hole above his Fancy typewriter poster like it could have the answers she’d demanded at her sister’s bedside last week. “I looked unimpeachable and nobody cared.”
“Ouch. Matching patent leather?”
Rain trawls the window, nicking the bullet’s point of entry and dripping into the heavy mug Scully’s placed strategically on the desk. Her lipstick’s peachy ectoplasm; her fine knowledge of parabolic arcs. When she’d let herself in, Mulder had been wandering around in one sock with a puddle forming under the bookshelf. The air is frowzy with coffee and April, cut now with Scully’s fresh perfume.
“Suede.” Like Whittier’s saddest word. Scully’s mouth closes so carefully around the sound. She’s never going to tell him about the wet asphalt on the long road to her mother’s house, the blood in the vamp of her shoe. Maybe in some way he already knows. You remember the Navajo dad showed us as kids? From the Pacific theater? she’d asked with her bruised feet in her mother’s teal bathtub. It was like that, with Mulder and I.
Difficult to understand? Maggie had sluiced lukewarm water up her daughter's shin. Dana, her stern and distant darling. Her own most damning judge.
Secret, Scully had said, thinking of endless chains of consonants. 16 syllables just to mean the word submarine, just to mean the word drown. And so long.
“Say it ain’t so.”
A sigh. “So.”
“Bastards.”
“Yes,” Scully agrees.
Mulder moves to stand between her and the typewriter. A healing pink scratch high on her forehead from when non-union poultry workers had tried to feed her to their plumed god — or whatever the hell had been happening in Arkansas. When he’d come back from the dead last week, she’d turned her back and bowed her head under ICU fluorescents to show him a different kind of scar.
The indignity of her name on misconduct reports and in manila files. Decorated Captain Scully’s earnest daughter, sitting with her spine straight in rooms full of men, on Mulder's couch, across from the bullet hole in his drywall. He’d cleaved to the flare of her honor in a road-side diner with Skinner across the laminate. She’d soothed his fever and nursed his paranoia and fired her gun. She’d driven him across the country on a careful dose of diazepam and then come to pick him up for work this morning. There’s nothing to say for it.
He asks, “Did they even ask you who you were wearing?”
“They asked me, um,” Scully blinks like she does when she’s waking up in cars, “if I’d lie to protect you. The OPR committee.”
“Oh?”
She looks at her watch. “We’re gonna be late. You’re ready?”
“What’re they gonna do, fire us again?” He see-saws his tie in its band. “What’d you say?”
Scully’s knuckles are pale around her scuffed briefcase, the same one she’s had since 1992. When he’d met her she’d been dressed in her best Girl Friday, a passé ‘30s flare to her square cut. It had been a shock, the slight of her shoulders under a robe and his hands not 36 hours later. Revealed: her real stature, no less straight and fine.
“Late,” she reminds. She kills the lamp by the fish tank. Her shoes are muted and sensible, low, and she tees them up at his threshold. “Let's go.”
He tags her elbow at the elevator. The same liminal spot where she’d admitted to some transcendent sureness in him, lighter and leaner than science or liturgy. I sent you signs, he’d said, on the way down. You get any of those?
She’d shifted against the back wall. I had strange dreams.
I’m talking omens, Scully. Like white oxen, weather patterns, that kind of thing. No? Maybe they got sent to the wrong address.
Now, as they wait, he says, “You’re not gonna tell me?”
When she turns toward him, her eyes are washed in the blue of Coventry’s stained glass, the dazzling fragments of war. Her mouth quirks the same knowing way it had before. It builds him up and cuts him down to size. He isn’t Lazarus; he is her partner.
“The tie is perfect,” she finally answers.
The tie is purple. The tie is littered with jitterbugs. The tie is awful. Mulder laughs; the elevator comes. Outside, pigeons hob-knob around her dusty car, and only one of them is the white of Picasso’s dove. The truth is that Scully’s integrity is outweighed only by her unfailing kindness, and the question is only which one of them it will kill first.

Idk there’s always posts that say “gosh I wish I had a brother who loved me like Mulder loved Samantha” and yea of course I think he loved his sister but also also I think he was just a kid who watched his family fall apart and maybe it wasn’t Samantha that was the goal he just…deep down even as a grown man he was still just that kid who thought if he fixed it, he would get his family back to the way it was. He just wanted his family whole again.
Mulder was chasing his innocence as well as his sister. His summer nights riding bikes on the Vineyard. He has happy memories from when he was a kid. His dad and him being Indian guides. Dressing up like Spock. he grew up in this idealic life until tragedy hit. Then the bubble popped and his parents couldn't cope and he was there begging every day to go back to when the world wasn't dark and silent.
I think part of this is why he is more reluctant with Scully. He wants a family perhaps that was why he was once married. He figured that was what he was really chasing. But for whatever reason it didnt work out. Then he meets scully and she is determined and brilliant and possibly far to good for him.

Do you have any prompts for a bunch of people living on a pirate ship? They’re like roomates but on a big ass boat and stuck in close proximity to eachother for months at a time.
Hi :)
Here are some prompts for people on a pirate ship:
Pirate Prompts
They truly were a ragtag group of people. All with different backgrounds and reasons for why they ended up here on this ship.
Living at close quarters turns this crew soon into a real family. A family that fights daily about food rationing and distribution of work.
Pirates are known for sailing the seven seas, always looking for treasure. And sometimes the treasure they search for are helpless people trying to escape their lives and find their happiness at sea.
They might seem like a bunch of jokesters, but when push comes to shove they all know what to do to keep the ship afloat.
Establishing democracy on a pirate ship doesn’t actually make things easier.
Historians will later tell the gruesome story of the queen’s abduction by barbaric pirates. What they don’t tell is the story of the queen of the land escaping abuse and becoming the queen of the sea.
i wonder how much of her life Scully spent trying to fit herself into roles that felt too small for her. like from what we know of her pre-pilot (smoking cigarettes in secret, rewriting Einstein, choosing FBI academy over a career in medicine, sleeping with older instructors, gaining credentials that most people her age could never dream of etc.) indicates someone who is simultaneously excelling and rebelling, leaping between disciplines and expanding her interests at a rapid pace. she’s clearly worked hard to succeed within extremely competitive and male-dominated institutions but there are already signs than she’s testing the boundaries and isn’t satisfied with simply checking the right boxes to advance her career. ambitious as Scully seems from the outside, her curiosity and her integrity prove much stronger motivators for her than professional acclaim (this gets spelled out pretty definitively by Squeeze).
so i think Scully before the pilot was chronically understimulated and always on the edge of feeling truly trapped or bored. but her tendency to act out is tempered by an equal tendency to fold back inward and assume the role she believes is expected of her — she is Starbuck and she repeatedly assumes that role in many of her endeavors and relationships, treasuring it at first but eventually resenting it as well. so Scully wants more of something but what more is there? what except to keep going along the path she’s fought to make her own? she’s not doing what her father wants or what her teacher wants but she’s still unsatisfied. until she’s standing in a cramped basement arguing with a strange man about aliens and feels like she can breathe freely and think freely for the first time in a long while
I think that is why she loves the xfiles so much. It challenges her, mulder challenges her. Not in a way that minimizes or diminishes her value or intelligence but in a way that says "you are far too smart to believe that this all there is." Its why he withholds certain case details. He profiled the fuck out of her when he read her thesis. This incredibly smart determined woman who rebels in strange ways not because she doesnt like conformity but because she needs the challenge she needs the thrill of curiosity. She wants to know all the secrets of the world. He leads her in that pilot episode because when he read her thesis he didnt see the skeptic he saw a beautiful mind that matched his own. That didnt shun away from the mysteries of the universe but pulled back the curtain to sit down and understand it.
And she fell hard for it. Because it both excited and challenged her in a world that has at times been too easy, too simple. She loves her job not because she is just a badass fbi agent but because the xfiles really are a new exciting challenge everyday and Mulder is in some ways that figure to challenge her but also he treats her as an equal (until never again when he is just a giant dick). They disagree and they argue but as minds coming together to explain the crazy to make sense of the nonsensical.
This is my second Spooky Award post. It's apparently a series! My post about Spookys 1998 is here.
The Spooky Awards were the annual awards given to X-Files fan fiction from 1995-2004 (except for 1997). They were voted on by fans and were always a bit contentious. You can read more about this at Fanlore or my previous post on the topic. The award categories changed pretty drastically changed them every year: look how different 2000's are from 1998's!
But ... this was apparently a loaded topic. Check out this lively discussion about what the Spookys' categories should be in 1999. Also, there were apparently no 1997 awards because of ballot stuffing during the 1996 Spookys, which seems like it was a whole exciting fandom drama! But I digress.
Originally I was going to focus this post on the 1999 Spooky Awards because, you know, they came consecutively after 1998 (and because @amplifyme won a lifetime achievement award that year! did y'all know that? it seems deserved for sure, although she must have been awfully youthful to be getting a lifetime achievement award).
But once I looked over the full list for 2000, I couldn't resist choosing 2000. Nearly every fic on the list is familiar to me. These are some masterpieces. This had to be one of the high point years for fic, at least in my book. So many of these are still on my rec lists! (And not just mine!) I mean, right?
Some trends I notice for the winners of this year: lots of angst. XF fic always includes angst, but oof, 2000's winners had so much. More angst than smut, I would say, although there's smut, too. This is interesting because in 2000 canon, of course, we're in season 7 and things are generally lighter and flirtier. Well, I guess Sein und Zeit / Closure, Orison and the season finale are plenty angsty, and there are fics here about those episodes.
I also notice a 2000 trend for post-apocalyptic fic and fic with clever and grim twists. Of course, in canon, the mytharc is pointing to likely colonization at this point, there were lots of 90s alien invasion stories in general. And who knows, maybe we have some general turn-of-the-millenium apocalyptic vibes in the air, too? Pop culture of the late 90s / early 2000s also really liked clever plot concepts and twists (See: Se7en, Sixth Sense, Usual Suspects, The Others). So these make sense as fanfic elements.
At any rate, I present to you ... the XF fandom's Spooky Award Winners of 2000. (I will get back to 1999, I promise! And the others!) I do have to split this up in two posts because of link limits, but I will link the second part below. Let me know what you notice / think.
