Everyday after school, Stanley would ride his bike straight to his best friend Max’s house. On occasion, the front door would be open. Just for fun, he would walk in and surprise Max.
Max’s house had plenty of things to play with. They would spend the whole day telling each other funny jokes, read superhero comics, and watching action packed cartoons. Sometimes they would draw all day long, even way after the sun has gone down.
One day, on Stanley’s route to Max’s place, he spotted a big fat cat. The cat was dark brown with strips that ran down his back. It was Goliath the cat! Stanley had seen him before.
Stanley rushed towards him, but quietly. He didn’t want to scare him off. He jumped off his bike and wrapped his arms around the fat beast. Goliath tried to struggle away, but eventually accepted his fate and calmed down. He was not easy to carry and probably weighted a ton, so Stanley wobbled to Max’s house and wobbled through the front door. Max was surprised to see Stanley, but this time he was even more surprised with what he was carrying in his arms.
“Goliath! He came back!”
Goliath was a neighborhood cat that would come and go as he pleased. The last time Stanley and Max saw Goliath was months ago, last summer. Max and Stanley loved it when Goliath came to visit. Goliath was bigger than most normal cats and could roar like a wild lion.
They quickly ran the refrigerator and poured milk and tuna into a bowl for Goliath. As he scarfed down the food, Max and Stanley decided to never let him go ever again.
They made up stories about where Goliath traveled too. “Maybe this time he went on a bus and drove to New York City and ate frankfurters,” said Max. “Well maybe he when ever further, and flew to the great pyramids. The Egyptians would worship him!” said Stanley. Max continued “Or maybe He hopped on to a spaceship and went to…” they both yelled, “the Moon!” They both were in amazement.
They looked down at the dry bowl that Goliath had licked clean and heard a loud roar coming from the front door of the apartment. Goliath was full and was ready to leave. Stanley said, “No Goliath! You can’t leave, you just got here!”
“How about we play with him so he would want to stay longer?” Max suggested. They both tried to distract Goliath as best as they could.
They read Goliath their favorite comic book; but he was not interested.
They turned on their favorite cartoon show; but Goliath walked away.
They told Goliath their funniest jokes; but he did NOT laugh.
Finally, they tried drawing their best picture of Goliath and showed it to him, but he just roared louder and louder and waited by the front door.
Max said bitterly, “I give up! Let him go if he wants to!”
Stanley replied, ” Goliath will come back…he always comes back…”
Stanley understood that a house is too small for cats like Goliath to stay. They sadly decided to let him go; knowing he would come back and play with them soon. They both hugged and said their goodbyes to their dear cat friend. The sun was setting as they watched him leave through the door. They might wait weeks, they might wait months, or they might even wait years; but they would spend that time thinking about all the adventures Goliath would be having.
