i learned about Marion Stokes, a Philadelphia woman who began taping whatever was on television in 1979 and didn’t stop until her death in 2012.. The 71,000 VHS and Betamax tapes she made are the most complete collection preserving this era of TV. They are being digitized by the Internet Archive. (x)
i feel like this is selling her a bit short tbh. It’s not like she was a random woman who decided to tape ‘whatever’ was on television. She was a civil rights activist and archivist, who was extremely concerned about preserving history. She believed that, by taping television, she would be preserving history EXACTLY as it was perceived at the time; she didn’t want the detail in the news to disappear with time. And she was RIGHT.
Like I said, she didn’t just tape ‘whatever’ was on television. It was extremely targeted towards news stations. There were 8 VCRs running at all times in her home. Her life—-and her family’s lives—-were centered around 6 hour blocks, since that was the amount of time that a tape would record for. Her collections were also extremely organized.
The Marion Stokes Movies and Video Collection may be found on the Internet Archive here.
Wikipedia’s article on Marion Stokes may be found here.
A documentary of her life, Recorder: the Marion Stokes Project, was released in 2019, and seems to have good reviews, though I have not yet seen it.
From archive.org (Internet Archive) - The Marion Stokes Papers contain documents related to the life and activism of Marion Stokes (1929-2012), civil rights activist, feminist, and news archivist. Stokes’ social activist career began in the 1950s, and encompassed many areas of left politics during a particularly transformative time in America. Her groundbreaking television show (co-produced with her husband John S Stokes Jr), Input, addressed many pressing issues, and much of it remains relevant today. Additionally, Stokes amassed a huge archive of videotaped television news, which is slowly being made available through the work of the Internet Archive.
just saw the french dispatch. so why is nobody talking about the read of the century
okay french dispatch was great and so many bits and lines whammied me, but none were more relatable than: “a weakness in cartography: the curse of the homosexual.”
I have just been to the French Dispatch exhibition in London and RED ALERT CALL AIR FORCE ONE was in the presence of a pair of trousers Owen wore *FAINTS*
Also he sat on that bike seat 👀
Also the shoes were HUGE 🦶🤤

damn homie you got any more hot things of two cents for the french dispatch because, DAMN I AGREE!! my joke was, "Oh ahha tits yes, love me a lady" but you know?? I forgot art was a central plot thing in the film, women modes are very popular, yes love it, thank you, friend, thank you for the miles of two cents I love it so!! Also love how we collectively go, "WES ANDERSON???" and scurry to the newest post.
HAAHHAHAHHAHAGAAHAAAA I DO ARWYN I DO I DO !!! i also appreciate your take it is just as valid as mine <333
i have a take about the changes between colour and black and white and the way it’s a method to highlight and emphasise the most important motifs and settings within each of the three stories
for the first, it’s with moses’ art work, being revealed in julien’s office as he lifts off the cover, which makes it feel like you’re seeing colour for the first time. the pink is powerful and stands out, a colour not only working to reflect simone’s hidden femininity beneath the guard uniform, but also her sexuality, something we only see with moses, and something that is hinted at with her past (with the child she had in her youth that she has been separated from, most likely out of wedlock). the classic wes style slow mo tracking shot as she walked along the fresco almost brought tears to my eyes it was absolutely stunning.
then for the second story, most of the colour is held for the cafe, le sans blague, which is a symbol of the youth culture in ennui and the hub of their resistance. the shots with juilette and zeffrelli were particularly beautiful and i believe are shot in colour to illuminate the power of their love as well as the power of their protest. warm shades of yellow and red bring about a homeliness that contrast the cool greys and blues of the outside street, solidifying the setting as a welcome shelter for the young people of the town. the juke box shot with the walls of the cafe being pulled away from behind them isolated them in the street, and strikes a very powerful image, making them the centre of attention and the centre of their own worlds as they believe they are.
and lastly, with the third story, the colour was mainly used for imagery regarding the food prepared by lieutenant nescaffier, a beautiful contrast of its expertise and construction and taste with the black and white formulation of the rescue plan of the commissaire’s son. both take skill, training and strategy, but the execution is wholly different. both could be interpreted as an art form in a way, but its easier to label the chef as the artist overall. the taste can be translated through the golden tones and shades of it’s beautiful presentation, and since its the focus of wright’s story, it makes the most sense to be centralised. as for wright’s television appearance, a similar reasoning follows - it reflects a bright technicolour that gives life and character to his enigmatic typographic memory. the animation portion is coloured also to reflect the comic strip style that would be seen in the french dispatch - beautifully drawn and coloured to be printed in each block shade of its story.
as a last note i’ll say the use of colour in the beginning and end in the french dispatch’s office was to show us the present, or rather, the future. our stories we see take place in the past, and as the magazine serves as howitzer’s legacy and life purpose, we see him and his office both alive and dead, surrounded by his writers and editors in the full colour of life.

Wes Anderson for the best director!
"What colour eyes do you have? Blue?!”
"The French Dispatch is shot on 35mm with Yeoman finding the texture of negative film more in keeping with the story’s artisanal aesthetic. Several sequences are shot in black and white with colour used for emphasis, for instance when actress Saoirse Ronan leans forward to reveal her blue eyes."

Edward Norton as The Chauffeur THE FRENCH DISPATCH (2021) dir. Wes Anderson
I would literally love nothing more than to be a one-dimensional Wes Anderson character. No worries, no taxes, just me and my quirky little personality making my way through the world.
“Deep in the human unconscious is a pervasive need for a logical universe that makes sense. But the real universe is always one step beyond logic.”
— Frank Herbert, Dune
reviews that complain about Dune being bleak and humorless make me want to throw myself against a brick wall.
listen.
Dune is not for everybody. there are many people who won't enjoy it, many who will think it's weird and strange, and whatever. and that's fine. there plenty of valid criticisms of the movie out there, but sweetheart, this ain't one of them.
hollywood's obsession with making mass profits off of movies that passively amuse and entertain people has brainwashed most of the movie-going population into thinking that all good sci-fi/action/adventure movies must have comedic overtones, and that humor is the only way to engage with a movie and its characters (looking at you marvel). i laughed maybe TWICE during the entirety of Dune and i was more invested in the characters and the story than i was with the last three star wars movies.
Dune is a political-thriller space opera. it's an EPIC. it's bleak because jihad and exploitation are its central themes. inserting comedy into the film would have been an enormous disservice to the story and its themes.
we finally got a blockbuster movie that's refreshingly innovative and unique and y'all are whining because it doesn't fit your expectations based on years and years of consuming formulaic, action = humor media. i am going to scream.
