A..."view from the pews?"
(This post is essentially a very long rant, lol)Â
Alrighty, one of the visual novels that I find particularly interesting is wan2talk. It is honestly such a captivating story, and chapter 1 hasn't been released yet! I love when stories establish dynamics and character traits so concisely. Now, the character that interests me the most is Cain.
Out of the 4 love interests, Cain stands out the most to me for...many MANY reasons. I love a good, flawed character âď¸.Â
I have been reading other people's analyses on Cain, and everyone is so detailed and perceptive! There are some aspects of his character that I completely missed! All in all, there are some very interesting components of his personality. There is one main thing I want to address: Cain's view on religion (Catholicism). My qualifications-
I am Catholic â¨. (A progressive Catholic, but a Catholic nonetheless). I thought I would share my view on this subject, because Cain and I have COMPLETELY DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVES ON THE RELIGION! đ
For starters, I would like to clarify some things-
Based on what the creator, Mira, has shared about Cain, it is clear that the environment Cain grew up in was extremely rigid and strict on religion from what weâve seen. I was not raised in such a strict manner (imo), so my experience differs; Iâll try to be objective. (No promises, though đ).Â
Cain is a misogynist, a homophobe, and a bit of a meanie. Despite this, his views do coincide with Catholic doctrine. Catholicism is a very patriarchal religion and holds conservative values that are still widely contested (understandable).Â
For those who arenât too familiar with biblical scripture, I shall quote some verses that support this claim. (Controversial verses rooted in misogyny).Â
1 Timothy 2:11-12 states: "A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man; she must be quiet".Â
Ephesians 5:22 states, "Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord."
These are just 2 out of the MANY MANY verses that treat women as second-class citizens and/or property. Modern theologians recognize that customs of that time are reflected in this very OLD book (the Bible is over 1,500 years old). A separate argument is that it is quite difficult to apply outdated principles to modern problems/society. But of course, Cain was raised with very concrete gender roles established. The notion that women belong in the kitchen, obey their husbands, and are more emotional than men is all part of religion-backed misogynistic rhetoric. It seems that most people who spew it tend to conveniently forget that anger is also an emotion. đŹÂ Curiouser and curiouser.Â
Now, onto the homophobia (wow, thatâs a sentence I never thought Iâd say).Â
Homophobia in the Bible is an extremely controversial topic, for starters. âItâs Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steveâ and all that stuff đ. Let it be known that yes, the Bible does indeed reject homosexuality. It is labeled as unnatural, morally incorrect, and-
Leviticus 18:22: "You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination." (Old Testament).Â
1 Corinthians 6:9-10 says that those who practice homosexuality shall not inherit the kingdom of God. (New Testament).Â
Yes, there are many more verses such as these.
Mira says that Cain absolutely has homophobic views passed down by his parents. He had to fit into a system that demanded conformity. Challenging the principles you were raised with is no piece of cake. I, for one, am quite curious as to how the dynamic between Cain and a male/masculine MC fares (yâall, please let me know). Cain strikes me as someone with fragile masculinity, which certainly wouldnât help with his not-so-internalized homophobia.Â
Now, I wish to speak about my personal opinion. I mean, so from my brain, rather than direct quotes from the Bible. I believe that the main role of a Christian is to be more loving, caring, and accepting of others. The word âloveâ is mentioned so many times in the Bible. It saddens me to see people outside and inside the religion view Catholicism as a religion of self-hatred and suffering, with such rigidity. The Bible has SO MANY contradictions, too many to count. It is not a book to be taken at face valueâŚbecause you literally canât. (There is LITERALLY a verse about not charging interest on loans given to the poor đ). (As someone from the South, I can tell you a lot of Bible thumpers donât follow that, lol). (The Bible also bans the wearing of mixed fabrics in a single garment). There are a bunch of rules that make no sense.Â
I wanted to provide a more theological perspective, since Cain values his religion. I apologize if this post came off as a sermon; I pinky promise that wasnât my intention đ. I want to make it clear that I do not tolerate racism, bigotry, misogyny, or any other forms of hatred. My own views may contradict the churchâs teachings, but my principles are what feel right in my heart. I do not agree with pushing my beliefs onto other people. I am also a firm believer in âlive and let live.âÂ
Thank you for your time, and I apologize for my ramblings.Â
