i am 6 years old. i bundle up my courage and hold it in my chest, too conscious of the bubble of fear inside my throat. i push my voice out, timid and small, “why can’t we have two moms in house?” their looks say it all.

i am 10 years old and the pretty girl named spencer says if i do her homework for her she won’t tell anyone i have a crush on her. her smile is kind and daisies are growing in her eyes. i take the paper silently, eyes focused on the floor as if it held her heart.

i am 12 years old and i am getting death threats in my locker. i am not allowed to be gay. i look up “how to like guys if you’re a lesbian” that night.

dear mr. miranda,

i am a teenaged gay girl living in a world where i can not walk down the street holding my girlfriend’s hand without fear of being killed. i am supposed to grin and bear it. i am supposed to accept straight “allies’” veiled homophobia with sweet smiles and congratulations.

i am in pain. i am being killed every day. you dare to capitalize off my suffering, dare to make a song out of my tears. you are what i’m supposed to be happy about. i am supposed to be overjoyed that you used my sexuality to create a song to make you seem like a better person. 

dear mr. miranda,

you are straight. you can write your songs and proclaim how love can not be killed, but love has been killed and will continue to die in the periods at the end of your sentences, in the commas, in the music you spin so craftily. you are praised for being an ally, but it is not enough. you are making money off of the deaths of my sisters and brothers and siblings and i am ordered to stand by and smile at your “thoughtful gestures”.

Lin responding to criticism that he is profiting from the suffering of LGBTQ people with the song Love Make the World Go Round, which he recently released with Jennifer Lopez to raise money for Proyecto Somos Orlando and be a positive force in our culture right now. A bisexual Latina woman in Orlando who knew victims of the Pulse shooting has shared this in response to this kind of criticism.

Here is what the organization this song is benefiting is doing in Orlando:

Five women found themselves at a makeshift shelter a day after the Pulse nightclub massacre last month talking with victims’ families and friends, and realized something was missing.

Many of the families didn’t speak English, seemed distraught and confused. They needed help but didn’t know where to turn.

The women stepped up, partnered with dozens of local groups and launched the fundraising and awareness campaign, Proyecto Somos Orlando, aimed at providing a variety of services to those in the Hispanic community affected by the June 12 shooting.

“We realized very quickly that the vast majority of the families were Hispanic and that we wanted to make sure our response was culturally competent,” said co-founder Zoe Colon, director of Florida and Southeast operations for the Hispanic Federation.

In less than a month, the campaign has helped more than 300 people receive counseling and mental health care, Colon said.

Their efforts are just beginning.

Unlike other campaigns aimed at distributing cash directly to the victims, Somos Orlando focuses on care and getting people the immediate help they need – from trusted sources in their Hispanic community, Hernández said.

Services include case management, crisis intervention, mental health care, legal assistance and educational programs. That can be anything from treatment, help with transportation or bills.

The goal is to continue providing the services long-term, Hernández said.

As the victims’ families navigate a heavy burden of paperwork and funerals in the aftermath of the June 12 massacre, local Latino leaders are concerned about how the trauma will manifest in the tight-knit Latino community weeks, months, even years from now.

Topping the concerns is this: The infrastructure for such long-term treatments in Florida just isn’t there. Florida ranks 49th in the nation for mental health funding, according to the Orlando Sentinel. And disparities in access make it difficult for Latinos to receive whatever treatments do exist in the state.

To help chip away at barriers to access in the Latino community, Colon and other Latino leaders formed a group called Somos Orlando, or “We Are Orlando,” within hours of the shooting. The group’s mission: to offer services tailored to the Latino community. The services range from transportation and grief counseling with a bilingual staff to helping families of undocumented victims affected by the shooting.

Counselors in the organization have made home visits to some of the survivors and families of the shooting victims who were afraid or unwilling to leave the house.

…but it remains to be seen whether Somos Orlando receives the necessary private funding to keep operations afloat, long enough to help those who surface over the next month with mental health needs.
