It's something I've thought about before but I weirdly appreciate how much shit the Mother 3 party goes through. Like not even talking about the big stuff like Lucas losing his mother and brother or Duster's relationship with his dad or Kumatora losing her family. So many smaller things happen during the story that are kind of just humiliating and cruel. They're constantly cycling through humiliation rituals. Some of it's funny and I'm probably reading into jokes too far but can you imagine how angry you'd be if you're a group of disadvantaged misfits and everyone is against you even though you're fighting for their wellbeing, your efforts are constantly being thwarted and then you come across a treasure box hoping it has food or something and it just farts when you open it? Or you spend hours going through a giant toilet dungeon at the last leg of your incredibly time sensitive journey and it's the only way to reach the end, where even your closest allies aren't sure if you'll succeed? Even tiny little things like the DCMC boxers almost seem like ways that Porky is trying to break down the spirits of the people he has control over. Or the sewage pit the party ends up bathing in on Tanetane Island... The Pork Trooper having a move where he VIOLENTLY whales on a small boy, a young woman, a dog or a disabled guy with a brain injury puts such a horrible image in your head. And who can forget all of the Osohe ghosts that belch in your face and get you sick or the oxygen machines. A lot of that stuff is probably because Porky has the sense of humor of a 14 year old boy and is doing everything in his power to fuck with Lucas and his friends but some of it is just stuff that happens regardless and it sucks. Everything sucks so horribly for them on such an embarrassing level at several points and you almost couldn't even blame them for giving up on the world if that's how the story ended. If you're a certain kind of person it's almost cathartic how much petty cruelty is thrown at them but they still push on. Perservering in a world that hates your guts and making it a better place because you have so much love and hope to give back. I love you Mother 3.
