Since a lot of us are talking now about someone on bluesky saying tumblr was dead, I do think it's worth mentioning that the context was specifically about meta discussion. Only a small snippet of the thread in question actually got posted here, but the whole thing was about fans not knowing certain discussions have already happened because of mass migration off tumblr in 2018. (The thread is here; please do not make me regret linking it. Do not be an asshole to this person who was making some good and valid points, and just worded some things in a way that got hackles up.)
This was about meta discussion, and whether it is still happening on tumblr, which, just factually, it is. I kind of felt compelled to respond over on bluesky not just because I'm a meta nerd myself but because maybe other people are looking for that kind of thing too, and genuinely don't realize it's still happening here. Bluesky is just not designed for long-form text-posting, which is a comment on its format, not its culture--and I do kind of regret reblogging a post that, in hindsight, characterized bksy as having a uniquely toxic fandom culture when tumblr is hardly immune to that sort of thing. I apologize for that.
Anyway, it seems like the whole conversation has shifted into one about whether tumblr's XIV community is welcoming, and that's a different conversation but it is a valid one and I'm not going to argue with the feelings that have been raised. I'm here because tumblr offers things no other platform does, but we (tumblr fandom generally) can sometimes have a tendency to see ourselves as "above" the kind of unpleasant behavior that happens on other platforms, which we are just not. I'm sure plenty of people can attest to feeling unwelcome, alienated, or just plain having shitty experiences in fandom here, and while I also understand the feeling of knee-jerk defensiveness when someone criticizes a community you're a part of, I don't think we should be too quick to drown out those voices with, "Well, I always felt welcome in this fandom and if you didn't it's your own fault." We're not perfect. We can always do better, and we should be open to trying.
Like if your immediate impulse when someone says "I had a bad experience in this fandom" is to go dig for reasons why it must have been their own fault and everything they said can be safely dismissed, I think you should maybe pump the brakes on that.
But seriously if they’re going to consider Reddit and the app formerly known as the bird app as the only “fandom hubs” and keep talking like Tumblr and our entire FFXIV community here doesn’t exist, then hey, I’d rather be dead than live in a toxic, drama filled hellscape. Just saying. 🤷♀️
Honestly, I've been hemming & hawing on whether or not I want to come forward & give examples as to WHY people don't view Tumblr as a good place to go & interact with the FFXIV community, but given that I'm still seeing people talk about, I kinda feel like it is important.
To be utterly blunt, the FFXIV community on tumblr is insular to the point of driving out potential new community members.
When I posted about my own experience on bsky, I had multiple people reach out & echo the same experience that I had: which is that Tumblr is a fantastic place for every other fandom but FFXIV.
I've had people show me the night & day difference between their LADS/Pokemon/One Piece/multifandom blogs & their FFXIV blogs and the difference is like night and day. Too many people are unwilling to engage with newer people in any manner, and it leads to this feeling of running into a brick wall or screaming into the void.
And it wasn't just the people who replied to me, either. I've had multiple people in Discord servers echo a similar thing:
"We use Tumblr for everything but FFXIV"
These are people who-- like me-- have been a part of tumblr since before the porn ban, and some before even Superwholock. None of us are new to Tumblr. Some of us left & came back. But we are more active on bsky in the FFXIV community because it is far easier to make friends, conversations and build communities.
I've tried multiple times to try and be a part of this fandom on here. I lurked for a few months, learned what was/wasn't acceptable, figured out the fandom etiquette, followed more & more people. Liked & reblogged their posts. Sent them asks even if anonymous. Commented on their stuff! People followed me back!
.... But my own posts go nowhere. No one does the same for me. I am expending all of this energy to try and be a part of the fandom, and it's one sided. And if it was just me, then I'd boil it down to just not following the right people or not posting at the right times or not reblogging my stuff enough... But it isn't just me. It's multiple other people. That's not a coincidence. That's a concerning pattern.
And yeah, I'm not entitled to anyone's reblogs or likes, no one is & this isn't about clout. But part of how community is meant to thrive on here is through reblogging stuff, interacting with things. Engaging in them. If it feels like absolutely no one is willing to do this for newer people trying to join, why would people want to even attempt it?
So yes, I get the frustration-- it sucks to have people act like Tumblr is dead, especially when you have a well established community of mutuals & friends. But in that same vein, I can understand the sentiment. The FFXIV community on Tumblr is only a thriving community if you already have established mutuals/friends. But if you don't? It's like screaming into a void.
Anyways. I'm not reblogging this with all this to rattle anyone's nests, but more to shed light on why people might feel this way.

Gabriel (42): sage(ish), bard, mentor, therapist, concerned about you
Used to be self-conscious about his relatively short ears. (I hc the ideal beauty standard in Ishgard was long ears.) Earned him the nickname Professor Stubbsy as a kid at the scholasticate (yes it was Nellie.)
His favorite smell is You Applying Yourself.
The House, Gertrude, keeps kicking him out. It was built by a witch using golemancy and functions as its own living soulkin with its own life force and what is essentially an immune system that tends to purge foreign objects it finds intrusive. It does not recognize Gabriel as his own living being, so Gabriel often finds himself opening, say, the door to his own bathroom and stepping outside the front door. It’s rather irritating.
Straight as uncooked pasta until Theneras happened. While Nellianne was his first love, he never really confessed to her until too late and now he has only one shark-bitten ass on his mind 24/7.
His milpreves are built more for healing than offensive spells because he hasn't had formal sage training, but Fourchenault did custom-build him lil milpreves for his own medical needs. What he did learn to do with them instead is induce a frequency-based echo-like trance state where he goes into your mind and relives your memories..
And also because they're frequency-based, he uses them to augment the effects of his bard songs! super bard buffs.

Theneras (42): Gabriel’s shard in the First, druid, ex-Dreamer, probably seen how you’ll die but won't spoil it for you
May look like he’s plotting to murder you in your sleep but he’s actually intensely affectionate. It may have been his influence that turned Gabriel into a warmer, more affectionate mentor/father figure for Yuuko than his own (terrifying military dad) was to him.
His favorite smell is one of his wolves Dirthamen’s fur when he’s been rolling around in the levin mint that grows all around Lakeland. Theneras can always tell he’s been there by the bit of static in his fur.
It helps if you’ve seen Sense8 because I stole a ton of tropes from that show, but after a few years of sharing aether with Gabriel, he comes to a point where he can reliably “visit” with him. They’re able to feel what the other’s feeling, taste what they’re having and hang out together across worlds. (time fluctuation shmime shmuctuation)
Speaking of stolen things, he has DA ancient elven nicknames for several other OCs and NPCs; Durgen'len (child of stone, dwarf) for the lalafell who kins rocks (@pocketyoukai), asha'bellanar for the aforementioned witch, Fen'mamae (motherwolf) for Shadowkeeper, etc.

Nellianne (42): Gabriel's former Scholasticate classmate, fencer, rumpy pumpy enthusiast, acquitted of all charges
Fought and won her own trial by combat at the Tribunal, even though half a dozen perfectly chivalrous knights had volunteered to be her champion. Was she safeguarding her clientele? Were the battles staged? Did gil exchange hands? Nothing was proven and it's all good entertainment either way.
Got suspended from the scholasticate partly because of little Gabriel but also avoided getting permanently expelled thanks to him so they're even.
