As we proceed inevitably towards Autumn a light raincoat becomes a necessity and I have found coats by Jaeger of recent years to look great, be hard wearing and at a reasonable price.  The above camel coloured bonded cotton mac is an excellent addition to the wardrobe that should endure past fashion and seasons.

Their tailored jackets likewise often have pieces that have lasting style such as this new Wool herringbone navy jacket carrying on a recent tradition of 3 roll 2 lapels, patch pockets, hooked vents and an almost entirely unstructured cut.   Although they describe the jacket as slim cut, I find this is instead more a tailored style than an overly nipped look.  This jacket looks to be the pick of the new season so far.

Jaeger is a company with a long heritage alongside Aquascutum, Burberry and the sadly missed Austin Reed.   Their clothes have a wide range but are always well made with select items such as polo shirts and knitted ties (which avoid being too slim) also being of relevance to the discerning modernist.

Dancing in the streets: William Claxton's jazz life – in pictures at The Guardian by Leah McClaren

In 1960, photographer William Claxton and German musicologist Joachim Berendt travelled the United States from Greenwich Village to Chicago and California, hot the heels of a musical phenomenon.

In the middle of the last century, jazz swept the US, crossing racial and class divides. Excited to document the phenomenon, Berendt decided to travel the country talking to musicians including John Coltrane, Billie Holiday and Miles Davis.

‘I used to live above Ronnie Scott’s. Chet Baker played beautifully, considering he’d lost his teeth in the gutter’

‘From 1976 to 1989, I lived in a flat on Frith Street in Soho, above Ronnie Scott’s jazz club. I went to sleep every night listening to jazz, which is alright if you like jazz, and I did. Ronnie was from east London, like me, and there were a lot of East End boys running the club. So I’d go down for a cup of tea or a glass of wine, and have a rabbit – it was like being at home. With one month until the publication of Terence Conran’s book entitled ‘My Life In Design’ we appreciate this earlier post of his 2011 exhibition at the Design Museum (which is itself reopening in November at Kensington).

“I hope I have remained true to my fundamental aim throughout my life – to produce useful things at a price that most people can afford. Such things may not win design prizes but neither do they go out of fashion. I have always believed that if products or buildings or interiors are intelligently designed they will help improve the quality of life of the users.”
