Pulling the wooden chair away from the other side of his desk, giving herself enough room to sit down as the pen and papers were handed to her. Gently taking them from the Captain, straightening the papers as she did before getting to work on the stack.
“No problem. I wouldn’t let you suffer through this lot alone.”
Just because he could handle it didn’t make it enjoyable. She could see some of the tiredness starting to sink in, but it wasn’t uncommon for Levi to miss out on sleep. She had caught him awake several times when she had wandered for some water in the night. Petra was thankful they were close enough that she could insist she shared some of his burdens. Whether it was making sure he rested, cleaning his office, organising his itinerary, or just signing papers, she did everything efficiently and with heart.
“How long have you been at this anyway?”
He offered her a tiny smile before continuing to scratch away at the stack of papers in front of him. One form just to say everything was okay day after day. Another on each of his squad members. Maybe that’s why he kept the squad small - too much paper work every day. More to evaluate the status of other squad leaders and their efficiency.
He took a sip from his tea, glancing up at her when she asked how long he had been at this.
“When did I clock in?” Levi focused in on the clock on his desk, his face going dark as he scowled. “A few hours now. Got up to do rounds once or twice and came back here. Though the good news is that if I finish this today, we’re done until next week.”
