oh my god someone peed on the ballpit
Okay someone who went to Dashcon. I have a burning question. How much time did you get in the ballpit originally?
So I just discovered this was a thing. It's a neurodiversity-positive handbook for people who have been recently diagnosed with autism/aspergers/ASD that's designed to introduce people to what an autism diagnosis means and provide them with resources and education about their legal protections. It's put together by ASAN and some group called Autism NOW and there are versions for adults and adolescents.
Don’t ask for your privacy. Take it back. On June 5th we will Reset the Net. Are you in?
Don’t know if this will actually help, but none the less this is important. If anything this will help get everyone in in the know and maybe we can keep the internet as open as it can.Â

Deep sleep promotes our well-being, improves our memory and strengthens the body’s defences. Zurich and Fribourg researchers demonstrate how restorative SWS can also be increased without medication – using hypnosis.
Sleeping well is a crucial factor contributing to our physical and...
A trigger warning is not a rule, it’s a tool. It does not demand that we withdraw from topics that are taboo or traumatic, but rather suggests that we approach such topics with greater empathy, greater awareness that not everyone reads the same way.

SCiO
This is a bit future-shock …
A small consumer-level molecular scanner lets you analyze the objects around you for relevant information, from food calories or quality, medicine, nature etc … This could be the start of the Internet of Everything
The Kickstarter was launched yesterday and made it’s $200,000 goal within 24 hours - the potential for this tech is huge. Watch the video embedded below to see the potential:
Smartphones made it easy to research facts, capture images, and navigate street maps, but they haven’t brought us closer to the physical environment in which we live – until now.Â
Meet SCiO. It is the world’s first affordable molecular sensor that fits in the palm of your hand. SCiO is a tiny spectrometer and allows you to get instant relevant information about the chemical make-up of just about anything around you, sent directly to your smartphone.
Out of the box, when you get your SCiO, you’ll be able to analyze food, plants, and medications.
For example, you can:
Get nutritional facts about different kinds of food: salad dressings, sauces, fruits, cheeses, and much more.
See how ripe an Avocado is, through the peel!
Find out the quality of your cooking oil.
Know the well being of your plants.
Analyze soil or hydroponic solutions.
Authenticate medications or supplements.
Upload and tag the spectrum of any material on Earth to our database. Even yourself !
You can find out more about the product at it’s Kickstarter page here
WTF!??!?!
Whoa could you drug test your drinks to make sure no one puts anything in it?!
Wasn’t there a big thing already about how the technology for this object, especially in this small of a form factor, literally does not exist and that this project is necessarily a scam
It’s extremely dubious, yes. The technology that it claims to use (infrared spectroscopy) is pretty commonly used in laboratories but it’s also much more limited. Most importantly, with IR spectroscopy the sensor and sample have to be shielded from ambient light, which makes me very skeptical that they’ve made one that works without being in physical contact with the thing you’re scanning.
So actually after looking into this a bit more it looks like at least one outside person has verified that it works(http://pando.com/2014/04/30/consumer-physics-kickstarter-campaign-shows-that-not-all-crowd-funding-has-to-be-a-dishonest-mystery/) so...it might be legit?

Whatever that is I'm not eating it.
Jessica Rey presents the history of the evolution of the swimsuit including the origins of its design, how it has changed overtime and the post-feminist association of the bikini symbolizing female empowerment. She refers to neuro-scientific studies revealing how male brains react to images of scantily clad women versus images of women deemed modest and what the implications of the results are for women in society.
(Note: As the OP, I disagree with Rey’s approach to putting the onus on women to alter ourselves rather than to alter the male perception of women – brain wiring has plenty to do with socialization and if we worked against the culture that fuels men’s objectification of women, women’s clothing choices would matter far less in terms of how men perceive us and determine how to interact with us).
Jessica Rey - The Evolution of the Swim Suit
Okay, she may actually have a point, but...the terrible neuroscience...it burns....
I have actually read every paper on binding by synchrony. Literally. There is no more research on this topic to be read. This is weird.
