The first thing Alysin noticed was the cold- rather, the absence of the warmth in the room she’d paid for last night. No rugged male body lay next to her, only the faint smell of sweat and sex lingering on the sheets as a reminder of the handsome gigolo that had caught her eye. He’d had a soft laugh and a sharp wit, both of which had convinced her to part purse strings and legs in a brisk affair of passion for the night.

   Staring at the ceiling right now, alone and naked in a room that suddenly felt far too large and empty for its single occupant, she wondered which of them had really been screwing the other.    Malingering in bed did nothing to stave off the chill that crept down her spine, but it did egg her on to stoke a flame in the hearth for some kind of comfort. As she hunched over the fire, its presence failed to soften the gooseflesh that rose on her arms, nor did stave off the chattering of her teeth, or the twinge in her nose, or-    Ah.    Alysin scurried to prepare her morning dose, snorting the thin line of red mana dust with more eagerness than she’d felt for the fire; a flush of warmth flooded her body, a tingle that arced from the tips of her toes to the points of her ears in a rush of electric familiarity. It made up for the coldness of the room, the chill of absence in her bed, and the emptiness that coiled in her belly to drive off the thoughts that lingered in her mind.
