miyoung was a fixture at spotlight long before she became an idol.

her mother was a former idol herself, though one that never found much success. mention the name “ahn soobin” to anyone, and you’d be met with dead eyes. an affair with a company executive certainly didn’t help matters. disgraced, unknown, and shunned by her family for having an affair and birthing a child of wedlock, miyoung’s mother took her idol training and got a job teaching at a dance academy in order to provide for herself and her daughter.

by 2004, miyoung’s mother had become a mere footnote in pop culture. with her old company gone, her old flame who knows where, and a new job offer from a rising company, she became a dance coach for spotlight. because soobin couldn’t find/afford childcare, miyoung often hung out at spotlight, sitting in the halls or in the corner of an unused practice room, doing her homework or coloring. though miyoung sometimes disrupted the flow of the usually tightly-run company ship, most didn’t mind. they had grown to trust soobin, and some had grown to like little miyoung.

by the time she was seven, miyoung had gotten bored of coloring in the corners. though never taken in by spotlight as an official training, she’d made a habit of sneaking into practices and following along to her mother’s coaching whenever she’d finished with her math homework.

miyoung had grown to love dancing. those who had seen her grow wondered why soobin didn’t simply have her daughter admitted as a trainee. when asked, soobin responded that despite miyoung’s unorthodox childhood, she wanted her daughter to choose the idol life, not have it forced upon her.

by age nine, miyoung’s back had developed signs of scoliosis. by age ten, miyoung was forced to wear a back brace. at school, the other children made fun of her for the contraption that kept her posture straight, so she had developed the bad habit of wearing the brace when she was around her mother, and taking it off at school. unfortunately, her irregular brace-wearing did nothing to help her scoliosis.

by age twelve, miyoung was forced to have surgery to fix her posture. bedridden for a long time and unable to dance for even longer, miyoung was only entertained by drawing and watching music videos. the videos made her want to become an idol.

after her back healed properly and she was cleared to dance again, miyoung began auditioning. she tried basically every company except spotlight, wanting to forge her own path. yet, her vocals were weak, she had no rap experience, and her scoliosis prevented the formerly talented girl from dancing at her full potential, so she faced rejection after rejection.

it wasn’t until her mother pulled some strings at spotlight that miyoung was finally admitted as a trainee somewhere. as time went on, miyoung’s dancing began improving, and she’d learned how to rap.

when they were creating the lineup for sparkle, miyoung was chosen. when they asked her to choose a stage name, she chose “amelie”. she wanted to be something different from the miyoung that was bullied, and she thought the name appropriately showcased her cheerful, fresh image.

needless to say, the netizens weren’t satisfied that she was in sparkle. they dug up old dirt about her mother and pictures of her in her back brace. they said that she was only in sparkle because of her mother’s maneuvering, not because of any talent of her own.

bomi came from a small fam? pretty poor.

She was a really good student and wasn’t even intending to join the idol life. She was known as the rap queen??

she got in some trouble for how much of a distraction the rap battle caused so she and the girl decided to meet up and do the battle in front of some big noraebang in Gangnam.

but it was a really close battle? A talent scout for Spotlight was nearby and was listening to the battle and at fifteen years old, she accepted.

She trained until she was 21 and debuted under the name BB.

Her fans were called Queen Bees ok it was really cute??

For the passed halloweens she dresses up as a queen bee and it’s just adorable she’s really adorable.

Her original fanbase had grown but she took an 10 month hiatus to stay with her father and mother.

Her father had been seriously ill and it was during her stay that he had passed away.

In all honesty, it took her a while to be able to get back to the company and actually work?

She was there, training and training and prepping for her comeback but all of her lyrics got thrown out for being so sad?

After her last comeback failed, she lowkey blamed it on the company. She doesn’t think she gets a lot of promotions because she’s older and  the demographic is obviously fit for younger people.

Music is something Bomi has always wanted to do and she won’t let herself give up because of her company.

Dani was always close with her family, that went without question. In their family,  it didn’t matter if you lived on under the same roof or on the other side of the world, you were always close and could depend on one another no matter what.

Growing up, if she wasn’t attached to their grandmother’s side she was following her older brothers around on whatever adventures they found themselves in as kids. As a child, she followed her eldest brothers Sam and Isaac through whatever they decided to do. But as accepting as her family always appeared to be of just about everything, as Dani got older she found herself closing off parts of herself little by little.

She didn’t understand why exactly she worried about what her family would think if she ever came out to them, but Dani loved them so much that she didn’t want anything to jeopardize how much they cared for her, though she would always care for them. But she had already watched her eldest brother Sam slowly separate himself from their family before cutting off almost all ties with them, and watched the rest of her family vilify him for wanting to live with just a little more freedom.

Only she and Isaac stayed in touch with Sam. He and Isaac had always seemed to understand each other more than anyone else ever could, though she was a close second. Sam and Isaac always looked out for her when she was little, and encouraged her to keep singing and dancing like she always loved to do but was originally too shy to share that with anyone other than her two eldest brothers.

Dani was thirteen when the then-newly formed label Spotlight Productions was first holding international auditions and a scout in the United States spotted her and invited her to their auditions for modeling. Her brothers’ encouragement made her decide to attend the audition, and for vocals and dance instead of modeling.

Spotlight invited her to train with them in Seoul almost on the spot, but Dani had hesitations about leaving her family behind to move halfway across the world, and at such a young age. The rest of her family had completely excommunicated Sam when he distanced himself from them, and losing them like Sam had scared her. But even though he was now physically absent from most of her life, Sam still looked out for her.

She talked about joining Spotlight with Sam and Isaac over and over; Isaac in person, and Sam over email. Sam’s support was the final push she needed to accept the audition. She saw him one last time in person before she left for Korea, where she finally told someone that she was gay. Though she was young, she had always known that she was gay, and fear of his family somehow rejecting her because of it had caused her to keep that to herself until she was finally leaving.

Dani trained for two years before she debuted as a soloist in 2016, using her English name as a stage name. A year after she first joined Spotlight, Isaac moved to South Korea to join a small hip hop label also based in Seoul. He and Dani became even closer than they had been back in the US, as they were now the only family they had nearby. Often, Dani wondered if that was what Sam felt like now that he was living his own life, getting married and starting a family of his own.

But just as the three siblings were each finding success in their own ways, their luck ran out when Sam and his wife and son, Inho, were involved in a car accident that left Sam and his wife dead and their son now an orphan. Isaac immediately went back to the States, and it went without question that Dani would come with him. After Dani had burst into overwhelming sobs while explaining to her CEO Dong Sunye what had happened, DS put her on indefinite hiatus and she returned home with Isaac for the first time since she left.

Dani was appalled that the rest of her family refused to attend Sam and his wife’s funeral, and was even more disgusted when they refused to help their now parentless son at all. She couldn’t believe that the people who she used to love so much, that she always thought could never turn their backs on each other, could act so coldly without a second thought.

Neither she nor Isaac were in the position to raise a child, but they weren’t going to leave Inho on his own like the rest of the family was all too willing to do. They brought him back with them to South Korea, determined to give Inho the life that Sam had always wanted for him.

It broke Dani’s heart to see Isaac quit performing, but she knew that at least one of them needed to have a more stable income if they were going to raise Inho. Dani returned to promoting only a few months after the accident, and she began to write songs even more fervorously. Though Dani hadn’t intended it, the royalties from the songs she wrote helped support their new family more than she ever could have imagined. She still worried about what would become of them almost every day, but at least now she worried less that she would somehow fail her brother, and more importantly, their nephew.

For as long as she could remember, Biyu’s dream was to be a Disney princess. Her small room at home had been turned into a “castle” (her only wish for her third birthday) and her wardrobe consisted of mostly costumes and pink dresses. As the youngest of the family, her older siblings were at her beck and call, often acting as the royal court or her knights. While most people grew out of their phase of what they liked as a toddler by the time they were seven or eight, she wasn’t one of them. Every year, her dream room got more and more mature, her wardrobe following suit by slowly pushing the Halloween costumes out to make room for cuter skirts and dresses. It was around that age that she realized that there was one thing Disney princesses could do that she couldn’t: they could sing. So, for her ninth birthday, she asked (begged was a more accurate term, in all honesty) her parents for vocal lessons. The first few months were rough; Biyu had little natural talent and wasn’t the quickest to pick things up. She’d started to hate going to see her vocal trainer, often pretending to nap when it was time to get ready to go for her lessons until her mother could convince her to get up and try again. It was until nearly a year later that she started to see real progress. Vocal lessons became her own personal challenge, one she enjoyed facing every week. Her obsession with princesses lessened the longer she spent singing, though she still enjoyed the fashion and looking fancy. For the first time, she had a real dream: to become a professional singer.

Despite how playful and carefree Biyu, now known as Aurora as an homage to her favorite Disney princess, comes off to the public and can often be behind the scenes as well, she has a strong work ethic. Though she sometimes takes a little longer to learn choreography than others, she’s diligent and knows that she has to work as hard as she can so she doesn’t hold the rest of the group back.

Hyunjin was born on October 31st, 1997-- if she’d been born somewhere that actively celebrated Halloween, she probably would have ruined her older siblings’ trick or treating that night, but she was born in Imja, to a family with a lot of kids and not a ton of money. The youngest of six, Hyunjin was kind of spoiled all the same-- she was the baby, and there were so many loving siblings around to spend time with her and dote on her.

Though she loved her family very much, Hyunjin grew up bored of her home. They lived rather simple, domestic lives, and while she understood that that was great for some people, she never really enjoyed it. All of that was only amplified when her older brother was scouted by DS Media when she was eleven. The second she got her first smartphone for her birthday, she was already posting on Instagram, learning how to dress herself like the big stars she admired and idolized, and gaining a pretty significant following along the way. Watching her brother debut and perform only made her jealous-- in a nice way, though. She loved him and wanted him to succeed. She just wanted to succeed too. So Hyunjin practiced her vocals, taking any choir that was open and needed members, and practicing on her own. She used her Instagram and opened a YouTube account, posting video covers of herself to showcase her talent, and when she was sixteen, that finally paid off, and she was scouted for Spotlight Productions, auditioning in Seoul shortly after that and making the cut. 

On the downside, her social media presence was frozen after that, but on the plus side, she was working so hard that her need for attention was kind of exhausted, her attention instead being focused towards dance rehearsals and vocal practices and language courses, training and training, but also making friends and working hard. Seunghyun hadn’t really been the sibling she’d ever been closest with (it’d been 5 years since they’d seen each other for a prolonged period of time, and Hyunjin had always cowered beside her sister), but training in Seoul changed that-- suddenly he was the only family she had right there with her, and she really relied on that. While she didn’t miss home as much as she did, she missed her family and the support that was definitely lacking when it came to long practice hours and harsh critiques. And the attention whore deep inside of her was honestly pretty excited when Spotlight let it slip that Gemini’s Seunghyun had a little sister training with them who showed a lot of promise. That was nice.

In 2015, Hyunjin was slated as a member of Sparkle. Her worth ethic over the prior two years, as well as her relationships to the other girls, made her a strong candidate to be Sparkle’s leader, and that same worth ethic mixed with inherent potentially made her one of the Main Vocalists. And when she finally debuted, it was everything she’d ever wanted. They were the biggest girl group debut of the year, their songs exploding all over the world. She got use of her social media back, and the followers on those blew up too. And she thought it was kind of cool that she and her brother both got to be group leaders-- Hyunjin was never sure how to phrase it, but she found it pretty fitting. Like, being a leader was a genetic trait. 

Hyunjin has big plans for the future. Not only does she want to make Sparkle one of the biggest names of all time, but she’s working hard for potential solo and acting debuts too-- not that she’s been told that she might get one, but she wants to be ready if it turns out to be a possibility. She’s done a lot of modelling too (with and without Sparkle), promoting herself and her group. She’s ambitious, and she knows she has the means to meet all her goals.
