THE SKY

Adult Swim Games/Mediatonic: Amateur Surgeon as a whole (with the exception of AS4, outside of Mediatonic) is a product of both Nighttime Channel, "[Adult Swim]" and UK Gaming Company, "Mediatonic".

Alan Probe's Name Is a Pun: Like most character names of this game (and a stable of other Mediatonic games apparently), Alan's name is a pun of "anal probe". There are many other pun names to take account as well, such as Ignacious Bleed being "I. Bleed", Dwayne Pipe being "Drain Pipe", Ophelia Payne being "I feel your pain" (the best name in this series imo), etc. Other names are either alliterative, rhyming, or parodic of words that would otherwise not typically pass for names, such as Aureola Svelte.

Alan's canonical age: Alan is the only one in the entire series (with the exception of Cecil Blowhard) to have a definite age, being confirmed to be 70 years old in AS2/AS4 (which takes place 51 years after the events of the first game). He is 19 years old in AS1, 29 in the Christmas Edition, 31 in AS3 and Hospital, and 80 in AS4's epilogue.

Adult Swim Commercials: Adult Swim has aired several commercials to promote the game and it's spin-offs/future installments over the course of it's run. Full compilation of most (if not all) commercials can be found here!

2. THE TIP

MushyBees/Katie Coxall: Katie Coxall, aka "MushyBees" as her handle, was the leading artist for most of the series, and is the most popular name for workers behind Amateur Surgeon. Unfortunately, she has passed away in 2021 due to cancer complications.

Dwayne Pipe Is A Serial Killer: Dwayne Pipe is the main antagonist and villain of the game and series (exceptions being his clone/son, Hubris D'Obscene), and is known for being a murderer who deals with bugs and poisons. He was once Dr. Bleed's med student, but found him to be boring and made a concoction to kill his patients, forcing him (Dr. Bleed) to take the blame. He hates Alan with a burning passion and will stop at nothing to take him down, even going as far as to run for president to ruin his (Alan's) legacy in AS2.

Ophelia Payne is Dr. Bleed's grandniece: There is a hinted theme of "generations" in the following games, as seen in AS3 where it's revealed that Ophelia Payne (the player's character) is, well, Dr. Bleed's grandniece. You could definitely see the resemblance between the two, too!

AS2, 3, and 4: Disregarding the Christmas edition (as it's a very brief spin-off with just five surgeries), there are three other notable installments in the series. AS2, as said earlier, deals with a now elderly Alan preforming surgeries again and eventually getting his life back, with the help of the Aide, "Bradley". AS3 takes on the same time as Christmas-Hospital, where you play as Ophelia Payne and travel around, also doing surgeries. AS4, made by another company, takes place around AS2 where you play as the young clone of Dr. Bleed (aptly referred to as just Ignacious), and do surgeries of the present and past.

Series Discontinued + Flash Shut Down: Unfortunately as of 2019, the series has been discontinued for (presumably) good. With those speculating either the WB merge or Flash Shutting Down being the main reason why a ton of Adult Swim games, this one especially, went down the tubes. Fortunately, there are emulators and archives that help brought most of the games back to life, so there is something left.

3. SHALLOW WATERS

Gigolo Assassin + Amateur Ninja: Outside of the plot of AS lives two spin-off games taking place in the same universe. Gigolo Assassin is a typical point and click game where you play as certified gigolo, Brett Bulge, on a quest to take down the Evil Sisterhood from taking over the world. Amateur Ninja, also a point and click game, is where you play as certified ninja, Willow Stiletto, on a quest to take down the greedy MegaCorp from taking over the dojo. Both of which have since been taken down, but are available on Flashpoint.

"Hacked Versions": Like most flash/web games, Amateur Surgeon is no stranger to it's "hacked version", either providing unlimited time or all levels unlocked. Sadly from what I remember from playing these, a lot of these were especially buggy and didn't really work most of the time. Often providing a very flashy, glitched screen during cutscenes, kinda like what happens here.

Bonus Surgeries: In AS1 and 2, there comes bonus surgeries only available when you reach a certain threshold (such as all A+'s on levels, a certain amount of points claimed, etc). AS4 technically has these, but they are unlocked by however many stars you earn from the levels. All of which are mainly just entertaining filler.

Clones: Clones as characters had been introduced in AS3 and 4, with the most notable ones being characters Hubris D'Obscene and Ignacious II, who are clones of Dwayne and Dr. Bleed respectively. Cloning just adds to the surrealism and fantastical nature of these games, on top of supernatural elements such as Robots, Mutants and even Vampires.

AS3 DLC (Lost Media): Out of any planned DLC, only one was really published and notable to the game, and is unfortunately lost media (currently being re-found by screenshots and data-mining). This one involved Ophelia making her way to a theme-park and fixing up a trio of brothers and a baby whale.

Pocket God: Pocket God is a game developed by Bolt Creative where you play as a God, watching over a small island of pygmies. The reason why it's here is because [Adult Swim] has made a skin pack for the game, which included a few sprites and customs from Amateur Surgeon. The pygmies even made a cameo in the lost AS3 DLC.

Game Glitches: Like any other game, Amateur Surgeon was no stranger to glitches. Whether it be flashed from it's hacked version, or just random (albeit seldom) ones in normal gameplay. Some of the more notable include a goof in the cutscene where two Dr. Bleeds appear briefly, or a design error where his nostrils was placed incorrectly.

Aureola Was Meant To Be In AS3: In some scrapped concept art for AS3, it shows not only did Aureola get a new redesign, but also seen to be tending to the upgrade shop. Sadly, this was scrapped for unknown reasons, but the concept art still exists for those to see.

4. MIDDLE WATERS

Circus Freakout: Circus Freakout was a DLC exclusive only to AS2 on mobile, where Alan and Bradley take on surgeries in a carnival setting. This was later revised into AS4, but has a few elements changed/missing, such as Boris Power's surgery being completely absent in AS4.

Amateur Surgeon Hospital (Lost Media): Sometimes referred to as just Amateur Hospital (though it is advised to refer as ASH due to the latter pulling up porn in searches), was a FaceBook exclusive game similar to Tapped Out by the Simpsons, where you would run one of Alan's hospitals. Designing the place as your own, preforming surgeries, etc. There was even an intro showing a bit of lore, particularly between Alan and Dr. Bleed together before the latter's death, which inspired Alan to keep his legacy alive by building a chain of hospitals. Sadly, the game has been discontinued since 2013, and has seldom seen any content of it since. Hopefully we're able to find more content or footage of it soon. It even won a BAFTA award in 2013!

Dr. Bleed's Cause Of Death: Some fans speculate the cause of Dr. Bleed's death since, because the intro to ASH is lost as of now, we're unsure what could have caused it. Although it has been heavily implied that, due to him being elderly in AS1, he died of natural causes.

Hubralan: Out of the very few ships of the game, Hubralan is one of the more popular ones, being the ship between Alan Probe and Hubris D'Obscene, with their only being a handful of fanfics and fanart out there.

Burke And Best: Burke And Best was the new company outside of [Adult Swim] that worked on and produced Amateur Surgeon 4, after Mediatonic had been bought by Epic Games and moved on to FallGuys. Because of this, and how jarringly different/contradictory AS4 is compared to other games, some fans have felt it being "uncanon" from anything else, but that's just up to the fans to decide for themselves.

"Horrors": In MushyBee's concept art of Dwayne, it is speculated that his name was probably going to be "Horrors" as seen in the picture. Although, this could also be a reference to his alias, Horrace D'Obscene.

5. DEEP WATERS

AS5 (Scrapped Game): AS5 was a planned fifth installment in the series, meant to come out around 2019, but was ultimately scrapped when Burke And Best disbanded sometimes around that year.

"Big N' Sexy HD Edition" (Upcoming Fan Remaster): Currently developed by JerzDrawz on twitter, a full HD and widescreen remaster of AS1 is in the works. The release date is currently unknown, but it's just a more polished version of AS1, with very few changes to gameplay and cutscene.

The Gimp: Not to be confused with Miss Distress's Gimp from AS2, the Gimp is a peculiar character from one of the spinoff's (Gigolo Assassin), in a very creepy rubber attire and was one of Danni Matrix's minions. In the end of the game, he is revealed to be Brett's brother, who went on a journey to take down Danni long ago, but fell victim to the pleasures of flesh and became her lackey before Brett's appearance encouraged him to escape.

Rick And Morty Crossover: As part of a Pocket God pack, Rick and Morty made a brief crossover in AS4, as part of a DLC where you use various Morty's as surgery partners, as well as operating on them.

The Regenerator Is Broken: In AS4, there is a device called the Regenerator where, based on how many Blood Diamonds and coins you receive, you're able to use the Regenerator for new partners, upgraded tools, etc. Due to there being no more updates since 2018, the Regenerator has been rendered as broken. But there are some tricks to try to bypass this, according to Reddit.

6. DARKER WATERS

"Johnson grabber": In a brief (and since deactivated) tumblr blog, ProbeDivorcePapers was a blog that specialized in datamining into the games. Among a few discoveries, it was shown that in the IOS version, Alan referred to Dwayne as "Johnson Grabber" in his Act 3 file as an insult. Nobody knows where this was changed of all things in the IOS version of the game.

White Sunday: Also found by ProbeDivorcePapers, was a discolored sprite of Lady Saturday that depicted her with light skin. Nobody knows why this was in the files, and is chopped up to be a regular programming/design error.

Dwayne's Hat Is In Gigolo Assassin: Being that the three are part of the same universe, and AS being the more successful of the three, it's no secret that there are cameos and references in both GA and AN, one of the more obscure ones being Dwayne's Hat as part of the Voodoo chef's party mask in Gigolo Assassin.

Lost Mediatonic Concept Art: According to this fanart from Lenarde on Deviantart, apparently there exists concept art that depicted more different designs to characters, particularly the main character, Alan Probe. Sadly, the page leading to this in particular has been lost to time, so one could only speculate what it must've looked like in the game's art style.

"GA + AS Brief Crossover": Last mention of ProbeDivorcePapers here, the blog discovered there being a secret place in Act 3 of GA, where Brett would find himself not only in Mediatonic's office at the time, but also into Alan and Bleed's clinic. For a while, nobody knew of this up until now and nobody was sure how to access it, until this youtuber posted a video showing how to access it and what it entails. It's neat to see the main characters of both games interacting, at least!

7. THE ABYSS

Sparkle Shine + Neuralnet/Skynet: The catchy tunes you hear in both the main menu and gameplay of AS1 actually have names, and were actually ripped from somewhere. Recently, the names have been found out as Sparkle Shine and Neuralnet/Skynet respectively. There is also a few other stock music pieces that have been used for later games, but it's also speculated that a few themes have been composed originally in game.

Karl Puccino is Immortal: Given the time frame the entire series expands upon, everyone seems to age as depicted... expect for one character, Karl Puccino. Even seen in the AS4 epilogue (where mind you, Alan is in his 80s), he has the same look and personality as he did in AS1. Anti-Aging Advantages from Coffee, perhaps? Or just a goof that they ran with.
