the best things to request are open-ended original creature prompts, e.g. emoji combinations, parts challenges, color challenges, etc. that's what i like to make. you can request fan creations but it might be a while until i get to them.

the spore discord has what technically counts as official art of several creatures for emotes. i think thats neat!
i believe these were drawn by Reilyn, the artist on the current spore team
i got the emotes in the highest possible quality (as much as discord would allow), heres the bean ones

and willosaur. this one was only added very recently (not sure when i dont keep track) so theres definitely going to be more of these emotes
curiously referred to as willosaur in the emote names, despite that being a fan name and tripod being the official name (according to datamining spore and one of the protos). however this spore dev team came years after the original devs, and its mentioned the ones on the community side of things are fairly new to spore, so it makes sense they wouldnt know this! im sure a lot of people who grew up with spore didnt know this! i just thought that was interesting
also it makes the name willosaur officially acknowledged too (unless its happened before and i didnt know)
So... I've been playing a lot in modded Spore, and made some silly creechurs!

tomorrow, october 23 2024, spore will be getting an update to renew the server certificates.
there will be no new content.
however, this means that all mods that use the ModAPI sdk will break upon the 2024 update. .package files will not break and will be functional upon update. Most mods that work on the current (march 2017) version of the game will continue working fine, though many will need ModAPI and the Launcher Kit to be updated.
SMC community modders are currently working on an open-source mod that will backport the 2024 certificate updates to the march 2017 version so march 2017 update players can continue accessing servers. when it is released, i will post a link to it.
if you use the GOG or origin/EA versions of spore, you do not have to update your game and if you do not update, you will not be able to access the servers, but your mods will continue to function.
if you use modded steam spore, set your game's acf files to read-only. from the SMC discord:
there is a way for steam spore to be prevented from updating.
Locate the folder SteamLibrary > steamapps
[it was Steam > steamapps for me, so it may be different for you.]
If you arent sure where you installed steam, right-click a steam game > manage > browse local files. You can backtrack from there. Most people have steam installed under "program files (x86)" but it depends.'
Set the following two files to read only: appmanifest_24720.acf which is Galactic Adventures, and appmanifest_17390.acf which is Core Spore.
You do this by right-clicking the file, then properties, then select "read-only" in the attributes section.
When you DO want to update, remove the read-only flag.
as of right now i have already taken these steps, and hopefully my game will not cease to function upon update day, but i am spreading this information so we are all prepared for if it does stop functioning.
as a precaution to prevent outdated information from spreading, i will be turning off reblogs to this post once the situation is resolved.

as detailed in Ocean Quigley's blogspot, originally the galaxy was made entirely out of particles

At first I tried creating it using nothing but particles. Andrew Willmott's Swarm system let me paint control maps placing particles in the galactic arms.
This kind of worked, but wound up feeling too wispy and puffy and diffuse. We couldn't afford anywhere near enough particles to make it feel dense and detailed.
the post goes into how the 3d model of the galaxy is built. it uses meshes that fade at the edges, and its used together with the particles, which now provide the smaller details and apparently even the stars you click on
the model in the final game is Spore_Graphics.package\animations~\sg_galaxy_assembled.rw4 and sg_galaxy_assembled_minspec.rw4. its just difficult to view in sporemodder fx
curiously, the galaxy also seems to be built in chunks
This image shows how the galaxy was broken down into a grid of cells. Each cell had its collection of stars and black holes and nebulaes and the like, and they'd be turned off and on as a group, keeping performance under control.

if you have the same mods as i do (listed in the pinned post but not linked yet, sorry) then yeah, you'd be able to save spore creation images and drag+drop them into your game. however, since i do use mods that means that unmodded games would not be able to see or use these.
right now i don't see a lot of reason to include the creation images in the posts directly, but if that's a thing people want me to do then i wouldn't mind handing them over to pollinate your game. as it is, if you dm me with a specific creation that you want, then i'd be happy to hand it over.
additionally, account creation over on the sporepedia has been broken for a while now, so even though i do have vanilla creatures i'm unable to upload them due to not having an account there. it seems like ea wants to do the bare minumum to ensure the services are still working. :(
