This culture forces upon you an ideal of authenticity based upon constant self-expression. You are only considered genuine and free if you can endlessly communicate and confess your thoughts and feelings. But the encouragement and idealisation of self-expression, under conditions where the self is subjected to unimaginable pressures of commodification, gradually becomes a demand for self-exposure, and, eventually, self-debasement.
In the rush to be legible in the increasingly lifeless language and forms of modern culture, the human being is trivialised, their innermost experiences of living reduced to nothing more than monetised rubble. The end result is that the vital autonomy of ineffability - of having, in other words, that inner space free and beyond the reach of the exploitative and banalising processes of the everyday - is lost.
