#DailyDevotion Jesus Is The Righteous, Victorious and Humble King
#DailyDevotion Jesus Is The Righteous, Victorious and Humble King
Zech. 9 9Be very happy, people of Zion! Shout aloud, people of Jerusalem. You see, your King will come to you, He is righteous and victorious, poor, and riding on a donkey, on a young burro, the colt of a donkey. 10He will get rid of the chariots in Ephraim and the war horses in Jerusalem; He will also get rid of the bow used in battle. He will talk peace to the nations, and He will rule from sea to sea and from the Euphrates river to the end of the world.
Matt. 21:5 and John 12:15 cite Zech. 9:9 in their Palm Sunday accounts. Zech. 9:9 here also fulfills what Zechariah prophesied in verses 1-8. There is cause for great rejoicing here, but not yet for the returning Jews from Babylon. Their king is Cyrus and then Darius the Persians. David's seed is relegated to being a mere governor. But the seed of David is preserved through him. But there is coming a day and it has come that the Father's David would come into Jerusalem and would do so in this fashion. Many rejoiced on that day but the rejoicing was short lived. Through faith in Jesus we all are the people of Zion. We are the people of Jerusalem. We should rejoice and shout aloud because Israel's true King and true David are one person in Jesus Christ who has fulfilled this scripture passage on Palm Sunday. He has shown Himself to be our King and our God, i.e. Jesus Christ of Nazareth.
Jesus is the righteous one. He is the righteous one who has denied and overcome the temptations of the devil for us. His name is the one little word that overcomes Satan. His righteousness is our victory in the day of trouble. We don't need to beat our heads, our hearts and minds with the Law when tempted. It seems that only exacerbates the problem, cf. Romans 7. It is the good news we have a righteous and victorious King, Jesus who has overcome our sin, our temptations and afflictions for us.
Jesus is also poor. It could also be translated as humble or afflicted. Jesus indeed was humble and afflicted for us. He was afflicted by the devil in the wilderness and putting His trust in His Father He overcame those temptations. He was afflicted for us in the garden, in the Sanhedrin, in Pilate's and Herod's courts and finally upon the hill of Golgotha. He was humbled for us to the point of death and the grave. His humility was demonstrated by riding upon a young burro. Such was the case for Jerusalem's kings. They were not to ride in on war horses because they were supposed to trust in Yahweh to give them the victory, not in their own military might. Jesus wins for us the victory not by His might but by His innocent suffering and death.
Jesus is returning again. On that day He will destroy all the weapons of war and those that rise up against Him. He will establish peace on earth for all those that follow Him. Even now, Jesus is speaking peace to the nations and His reign is over all. All that happens now He works to His purpose of spreading the good news of His peace, growing His Church, and strengthening and preserving His holy people. That would be you and me. As we go forth in our daily lives we are living under Him in His rule. We are trusting Him to overcome the wicked with the good. We trust He knows what He is doing. We do not need to take up arms in His name. We instead confess our faith in Him. We pray in His name. We proclaim His excellencies in all the earth. We do good to those who hate us and who do evil against us. We entrust those people to Jesus.
Heavenly Father, we do indeed rejoice and are glad at the entrance of Your Son, Jesus Christ, in to Jerusalem. Preserve us in His Kingdom so we continually sing His praise now and when He returns in glory. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
