Your relationship with Fez was, complicated to say the least. You had been friends for a decade and had become an inseparable duo. Constantly over at his house, you loved the way his grandma spoke so freely, and you loved how at Fez’s, there were no rules. Cereal at odd hours, biking all day, TV until the sun went down. Hours were spent at the convenience store, sneaking snacks and popsicles in the summertime, and standing in front of the space heater in the winter. Talking about whatever was happening at that time, whatever interested you. But as you grew, so did your feelings for Fez. You can’t pinpoint the exact time it happened, but there was one summer where you were running away from him because of cooties and the next summer, you were blushing every time Fez even looked you in the eye.
Sometimes, your relationship with Fez was questioned, when he’d hug you for a moment too long, when your hands brushed together when you were watching a movie, when you’d fall asleep on his shoulder, or when you’d cut his hair, and resting a hand on the junction between his neck and shoulder, and Fez would reach up and play with your fingers. It's like your friendship fell somewhere in between friends, and lovers.
Fez never said anything about it, but he’d be lying if he said he didn’t enjoy those little moments.
But nothing ever came of it. Your hope was squashed, made worse every time Fez would call you “family” or joking about you being the sister him and Ashtray never had. So, you decided to never say anything about it. It was better to preserve your friendship, rather than ruin it with unrequited love, and risk never seeing him again.
It didn’t help that Fez was totally unreadable. Every time the boundaries of friendship were pushed, you could never tell if it fazed him. There was the time where it was your birthday or something, and Fez had told you he had a surprise. He picked you up in his Pathfinder and had put a blindfold on you.
“Fez, I hope this isn’t some weird BDSM shit,” you had joked, and Fez laughed.
“Nah, it’s nothing like that. You goofy.”
You had no idea where you were going and felt like the car had been rolling for hours when it finally stopped. The driver’s door opened and closed. You could hear a crinkle of a paper bag, and then your door opened. You felt around for the door handle, or something to hold onto, instead you met Fez’s outstretched hand. It was warm and slightly calloused, and basically engulfed yours.
He didn’t let go, even after you had started walking.
Fez led you, presumably, away from the car. Soon, the feeling of asphalt from under your feet, turned into the soft feeling of sand. You could hear the sound of waves crashing on the beach. Fez stopped and put the paper bag on the floor. He came up behind you, swept some hair away from your neck, and gingerly pulled off the blindfold off. In front of you, the most-beautiful sunset you had ever seen was unfolding. The sky was erupting into hues of pink, yellow, and reds.
“Wow, it’s so beautiful.” You whispered, stuck in a trance with the setting sun.
“Yeah it is” Fez had said, but his eyes were trained on you.
You had both taken a seat on a blanket he brought, and when the sun slipped below the horizon, Fez had leant you his sweater, when you started to shiver. It smelled like him, a mix of cologne and weed. Between you two, a joint passed, the embers at the end illuminating your faces. Fez had brought a few treats to share, and some drinks, and you snacked happily.
The sound of the waves lulled you into sleepiness, and you laid on your side, your head resting in his lap. You both sat in a comfortable silence, occasionally, Fez’s fingers would find your arm and gently caress it.
“Look, I know you said I didn’t’ need to get you anythin’” Fez spoke up and broke the silence. You lifted your head up from his lap and leaned forward on your arms.
Fez looked away nervously, and then out of the brown paper bag, he pulled out a small box and gently placed it on the blanket.
“Ashtray helped pick it out”
You opened the box slowly, and underneath the heap of mismatched tissue paper was a charm bracelet, with dainty little charms attached to it.
“Fez, wow-“ You had smiled up at him. “This is beautiful, thank you.”
He had helped you put it on, fastening it in the right loop, and his hand lingered on your wrist.
You look at him, but found he was already looking at you, and you breath was caught in your throat. Fez licked his lips, before coughing dryly and looking away.
“It’s no big deal, Happy Birthday Y/N”
And you had worn that bracelet every day since.
After that, your relationship had become even weirder, pushing the boundaries of friendship even more than usual.
You’d go with him on late night drives and get In-n-Out, share a joint on the couch, and pass out, your head in Fez’s lap. The mixture of his fingers gently toying with your hair, and the weed would knock you out like a light, and when you’d wake up, you’d find yourself in his bed. When he was around you, he always somehow had to be touching you, nothing ever inappropriate, just subtle touches. A hand on your arm, his arm resting across your shoulders etc. You’d spend the night more often, and in the early hours of the morning, find yourself in a hushed conversation with him. Sometimes, in the middle of the night, you’d wake up with your body entangled with his. Things were weird, friends who are strictly friends don’t do this, you told yourself. Even Ash picked up on it.
“Are you guys…like… fuckin’” He said one morning at breakfast.
You almost choked on your cereal. Fez look at Ashtray like he was crazy. You lightly smacked the upside of Ashtray’s head.
“No bad words at the table”. You joked, but inside your heart was beating like a drum. You prayed that the dim glow of the kitchen light wouldn’t give away your beet red face.
“That’s fuckin’ stupid bro,” Fez said shaking his head, and spooned some cereal into his mouth. “She’s like our sister man”. He shoveled the remainder of his cereal into his mouth, and excused himself, and disappeared down the hall.
You cringed and looked sadly down at your cereal bowl, toying with the o’s. It felt like you had swallowed a bunch of angry bees.
“Yeah fucking weird Ashtray,” You muttered, before getting up, the chair scraping loudly on the linoleum, and tossing your bowl into the sink. It clattered against the other bowls and dishes.
The next few days were spent avoiding Fez. Clearly, you had been deluding yourself with ideas of romance. The reality of the situation hurt. Fez didn’t like you. Sure, you were family to him, he liked you that way, but didn’t see you as anything more. Just a “sister”.
“Why you sulkin’ ma.” Fez asked, a couple days later. You were both laying on the couch, passing a joint back and forth. ‘
“Me? I’m not sulking’” you scoffed, taking a long drag from the joint, and then passing it back to him.
Fez let out a dry chuckle.
“Fez seriously, what is it?”
“I just feel like you been sulkin, that’s all” Fez said nonchalantly, blowing the smoke towards the ceiling. You rolled your eyes.
”Yeah, well, I’m not.” You murmured, rolling over onto your side and reaching for the remote.
Thanksgiving came and went, so did Christmas, and finally New Years. Things had stayed the same between you and Fez, and it hurt like shit. But you did your best to make it unnoticeable. You had spent the last few weeks lounging around your place, and Fez’s.
A ping from your phone alerted you of an incoming text.
-Yo, NYE party tonight, you comin?
-What’s with you being a party pooper all of the sudden
-idk maybe that lifestyle is not for me anymore.
-girl, last week I had to pick up ur drunk ass from McKays
-stop fucking wit me, and get ur ass out here.
You rolled out of bed, annoyed with the hold Fez has on you. You pulled on some fitted pants, and a black deep v-neck top. You adorned your body with some dainty jewelry, before quickly doing your makeup.
You pulled on a jean jacket before leaving your house. The air outside was cold, and you shivered, pulling your jacket closer to your body. Fez leaned over the middle console and pushed the passenger door open.
The car was silent as Fez drove, the only sound coming from the radio, softly playing Frank Ocean.
“Yo what’s-up with you recently?” Fez asks, he glanced at you from the side.
“Nothin,” You pulled your legs up to your body, and rested them against the door. You picked at some of the leather that was covering the seats.
Fez exhaled from his mouth, like he was sighing.
“It’s nothing Fez, really, don’t worry about it.” You muttered staring out the window.
“You just been different lately,”
“Yeah, well-“ You didn’t finish your sentence, instead you became hyper focused on your fingernails.
The rest of the drive was silent. Fez tapped on the steering wheel occasionally and would glance at you sideways, but didn’t continue the conversation.
You pulled up to the driveway, and immediately went to open the door, but was stopped when Fez locked them.
“Y/N, what is up with you man.” Fez pushed.
“Nothing Fez.” You said, more harshly than you meant. You were being mean, you knew it, but you had a hard time dealing with complicated feelings.
Fez just looked at you, as if he was awaiting your answer.
"I don't like how you been acting recently, it aint cool." He finally said after a beat of silence.
“Jesus, stop bringing it up. Unlock the door, I wanna get wasted.” You said a little too harshly.
With a sigh, Fez unlocked the doors, and you made a beeline for the house, losing Fez behind you. God, this was so much worse than losing your friendship with Fez, you hated not being able to talk about what was bothering you, you hated that you couldn’t tell him, and that in the process you were just hurting him.
Since you entered the house, you hadn’t seen Fez once. Instead, you spent time with Kat and Maddy on the dancefloor, Jules in the kitchen, and a quick conversation with Rue. Cups with different colored liquid was passed through your hands, and you went through them quick.
The alcohol reached your head fast, and everything had become giddy and happy. You skin felt like it was on fire (in a good way), and you gravitated towards the dance floor. The music was booming, and you could feel it in your heart, the way the bass rattled your stomach was exhilarating. At one point, Ash had come by, taking your cup from your hand, and said you “Cut off”. You just rolled your eyes, and when he was out of sight, went for another one. You stumbled back and forth from the kitchen, the dance-floor, and the bathroom.
When you were going for your…way-past fifth drink, you spotted Lexi and Fez on the couch. They were in mid-conversation, talking about whatever the fuck, and looked sickeningly adorable. It made you gag. Your mouth went dry, your skin felt sweaty, and it felt like you needed to yak-up your intestines. You made a straight beeline for the garden, almost hitting the sliding door in your drunken stupor.
“Yo, Y/N you ok?” Fez turned from his position on the couch as he watched you fly by. He stood up quickly as soon as he saw you hunched over on your hands and knees, throwing up on a couple of bushes. He bit his bottom lip, before excusing himself from Lexi.
He came up behind you, and in one swift motion held up your hair, and patted your back.
“It’s ok, get it all out ma’.” He soothed, his hand making circular motions on your back. Tears pricked your eyes as you spilled out the contents of your stomach, until there was none. You dry heaved a bit, before falling back on your heels. You looked up at Fez, and tears filled your eyes.
You were always an emotional drunk. Fuck.
Before they spilled you wiped at them with your wrist.
“Hey, you ok?” Fez knelt besides you, squatting.
You frowned, and your heart felt like it was in your throat, your face felt hot and dry, your head was pounding, and as soon as you could feel the beginning of tears form in your eyes, you let the waterworks break.
Tears spilled down your face in fast waves and tried to wipe at them. “I’m sorry,” You kept whispering over and over again, not daring to look Fez in the eye.
“What are you sorry for ma’, what are you cryin’ about?”
You took in a shaky breath.
“I’m in love with you Fez,” You started as new wave of tears slipped down your face. “And I don’t know how to deal with it because the stuff we do-“ you motioned to the space in between you two. “-Isn’t normal friend stuff Fez, and-“ You hiccupped, you were quickly becoming a blubbery mess, a hot blubbery mess. “And everytime you do something I think finally you see me how I see you, but I realized I was wrong, you just see me as me, like a sister or something.” You took in another shaky breath. “And I get it, I really do, I’m not Lexi or anything.” You said, motioning towards the house. You rubbed at your eyes, you were sure you had ruined your makeup and probably looked like a mess. But, before Fez could say anything else, you dived for the bushes, throwing up once more.
He was silent as he held your hair back. “Come’on, les get you home.” He murmured, before helping you up. Your head was spinning, and you gripped his arm tighter. You nodded absent mindedly. Your vision was blurry, and you just focused on putting one foot in front of the other. Fez motioned to Ashtray, who stopped what he was doing (most likely business), and came over.
“Get her in the car, open the window, and make sure she doesn’t yak up on the seats. Ok? Get Rue, tell her we’re heading out as soon as I’m done.” Ashtray gagged as he took over and lead you over to the car.
“You smell like a sweaty liquor store”
You chuckled dryly, “Thanks Ash. That’s so sweet of you”
In the car, you lulled in and out of sleep as you waited for Fez to be done. Rue was beside you in the passenger seat and you fell onto her shoulder.
“I’m taking a quick nap,” You announced to no one in particular. Then, sleep took you.
The next morning you woke up to your head pounding. It felt like hammer was repeatedly hitting you, but from the inside of the school. The blinds were closed, and you squinted at the rays of sun that were coming in. It took you a moment to realize where you were.
Of course. Even when you were drunk off your ass, and had confessed to him how you were so in love with him while crying your eyes out, Fez had still taken care of you. On the floor next to you, there was a bowl and a half empty cup of water, and a bottle of aspirin. You groaned as you covered your face with your hands, your embarrassing drunk confession resurfacing in your memory. Maybe you could tell him you blacked out, and ignore it.
“Fuck” You whispered. You turned your head, and found the bed was empty. You looked around for your phone and found it charged on the bedside table. You also saw your outfit from the night before neatly folded on the floor, and realized you were wearing Fez’s pjs.
The creak of the door drew your attention, and you saw Fez open it. He was cautious with his movements, and instead of fully coming into the bedroom, he lingered by the door frame.
“Hi” you muttered weakly. You turned yourself on your side, so your back was facing him. The duvet partially covered your face, and you just wanted to burrow in the mattress. The room was quiet, and you heard the shuffle of slippers and then felt the mattress dipped.
The duvet was pulled away from your face, Fez’s fingers brushing lightly against your cheek, and you groaned into the pillow.
“You look like shit.” Fez muttered, you breathed through your nose, and pushed his face away.
“Shut up” You muttered into the pillow, trying to pull the duvet over your face once more, but he caught it with his left hand.
“So we gon’ talk about last night?” Fez asked, trying to coax you out of bed. You shook your head. “No, I’m good”
“Y/N, you goofy.” He said, pushing your shoulder lightly. “You really don’t think I feel the same way about you?”
Your heart basically stopped, and you propped your self up on your elbows, and looked at Fez with an incredulous look.
“Shit man,” Fez rubbed the back of his head. “You’re like the coolest chick I know, I like you because you are you, you’re like no one else. Not Lexi, not Faye or whatever.” He reached for your hand and squeezed it. He lifted it to his lips and kissed it.
“Damn ma’ got me acting all soft and shit.” He muttered under his breath. You lightly punched him in the arm and rolled your eyes.
"You've always been soft around me Fez," You murmured.
He shift closer to you, and his hands found your shoulders. His face inched slowly to yours, his hands moving from your shoulders to your neck, and finally cupping your face.
His eyes went from your lips to your eyes, and he licked his lips.
“Can I kiss you?” He said, his voice barely above a whisper. You nodded. He slowly placed his lips against yours, slowly moving his mouth in a gentle kiss. Your hand found his neck, and you gently scraped the base of scalp.
Gingerly, he pulled away. You were blushing hard, and your hands immediately went to cover your face. Fez chuckled.
“I am way too hungover for this Fez,” You laughed, swatting him away, but he caught both of your hands and pulled you into him.
“Then let’s get some food in you,” He murmured, and you felt it reverberate through his chest, and you nodded fervently.
He pulled you up from the bed, and helped you get up. Leading you out of the bedroom, and directed you to the kitchen.
“So you guys are fuckin!” Ashtray said from the living room, and you and Fez busted out in a fit of giggles.
“Shut up man,” Fez said, before planting a kiss to your temple.
