DID winx give a ton of people unrealistic body expectations tho? cause I see that criticism all the time (REAL BODIES DONT LOOK LIKE THAT etc) but imo the problem is much more the lack of body variety than the actual proportions
like, yknow that joke about how anime girls are so visually abstracted your brain basically interprets them as insects? thatās how I feel abt the bodies in winx. theyāre so unrealistic that my brain doesnāt even draw a parallel between them and a human fleshbody, theyāre purely symbolic to me
maybe only somewhat loosely related, but i was thinking about this sort of thing today, and theĀ āreal bodies donāt look like that/their bodies are unrealisticā criticism has lately rubbed me the wrong way, not because it isnāt true (because it definitely is 99% of the time), but because i never hear anybody say that about boys in cartoons. (or about cartoons aimed at boys)
like, thereās so much criticism surrounding fictional girlsā physical appearances in general, from the clothes they wear to their bodies themselves. thereās always talk about how cartoons aimed at girls have girl characters that areĀ āimpossibly thinā or something like that. i almost feel as though thereās this unspoken agreement that, in every review of a cartoon made for girls, the reviewer needs to mention the girlsā bodies and how they could potentially impart insecurities onto impressionable viewers etc etc.
iām not saying that doesnāt happen, and i definitely think there should be way more body diversity in all media, but i donāt know... i just think thereās so much missing in this discussion. it doesnāt sit right with me that even fictional girls are constantly subjected to such critical gaze. it also doesnāt really sit right with me that the discussion tends to miss the fact that we also could be imposing unrealistic body expectations on other genders, not just girls. i mean, the Specialists all more or less have the same body type, all thin, muscular, broad-shouldered. a lot of people do not look like that, yet iāve never seen anybody comment on how they could possibly impose unrealistic body expectations.
