I genuinely appreciate how obsession doesn't try to frame bear as morally grey but just fully leans into how deplorable he is. a lesser movie would have tried to give him redeeming moments along the way but no, at every single crossroads bear makes the wrong choice. when the customer service rep asks him if he wants to cancel his wish, he says no, and asks to alter it. when nikki, the real one, begs him to kill her, he asks her "if it would be so bad to love him", and right at the end, backs out of killing himself and tries to throw the pills up. he is the villain, not another victim, not a confused, cowardly boy, the villain.

As a really cool reminder, Curry Barker was offered a bunch of money to rewrite Bear to be the hero and he turned it down.

When we were shopping this around, there were companies that told me they would give me $2 million if I just rewrote the script to make Bear a hero. I was like, “I’m not rewriting the script to make Bear a guy that does all the right things. It’s so much more interesting that he doesn’t do the right thing and instead tries to make [the relationship] work and he just keeps making bad decision after bad decision.” The movie would have been so boring if Bear was going on a journey to figure out the lore of the One Wish Willow. So I turned down more money to tell the story that I was more interested in telling.

this is a moment in the original script that I wish they'd kept in the final version of obsession. the absolute disgusting way that real nikki appearing just becomes routine for bear and he completely ignores her in order to keep her. it's so horrifying the way her torment turns into something he hardly acknowledges

I think the scene where she asks him to kill her also would’ve made more sense if they kept this, he seems so unbothered, mildly annoyed even, if they would’ve kept this, kept real Nikki kind of popping in & out some so Bear seeming so, undeterred, like this is normal, like this is a everyday occurrence

it would’ve made more sense, & it would’ve hit a lot harder in some ways, shown how awful Bear truly is

I remain morbidly fascinated by the health of politicians like Trump and McConnell. We know that no matter what their physical health is or how badly it could affect them that remaining in their position is what they want. They would both 100% support keeping their body alive just to be technically in office, they would support every possible barbaric and nightmarish step that could be taken to maintain the pretence that someone who is corpse remains alive and participating as they always have. And they want this because they are both people who have an unquenchable desire to hurt as many vulnerable populations as possible. Their desire to kill and oppress is so powerful, they would rather let their corpses be puppetted around on strings if it meant just one more poor person would die alone and starving.

Lots of USAmerican politicians are happy to work their entire careers to try and create a global white supremacist world at the cost of billions of lives, but at the end, most of them also want to have a nice cozy retirement on their mountains of blood money. Not those two though. They're just as selfish and greedy and lazy as their peers, but there's something else at work, an unfillable hunger that needs to make sure other people are hurting. I don't know how or why a person comes to that state of mind, but those guy are at it.
