In addition to tying tube flies, I’ve also been tying up intruder style flies using shanks with stinger hooks, and various color combinations of marabou.

Wanted to try my hand at tying tube flies but didn’t want to invest in all the materials and tools in case I didn’t like it.

The DIY approach entailed using qtip tubes and cutting down a bicycle wheel spoke as the tube holder for my vice.

My first tube fly.  Discovered a low cost way of at least trying out the tying style. A Qtip tube cut to length and an old bicycle wheel spoke as the mandrill to hold in place on my vice while tying.

The rains have started here in Oregon and the rivers are on the rise. I have yet to experience my first steelhead encounter and figured I’d try and improve my chances by fishing some intruder style patterns.

I’ve heard purple and black are a deadly combination for steelhead so I figured why not.
