I like films that approach things differently and play with the medium. Works that try things - whether successful or a failure. Failures are often super interesting and valuable for those risks. I think you can tell when innovation or playful expression comes from the heart versus following best practices. This road-less-taken approach creates efforts that translate those intentions for viewers to respond to. That doesn't mean I only like "weird" or obscure movies either (mainstream stuff can hit those points above) but Pom Poko was pleasantly strange. It was complex and bittersweet. It had wild set pieces perfectly suited for animation that were amazing. Definitely funny too. It's heavily influenced by Japanese mythology that mashes up with modern issues, thus all the fresh nonsense that makes it so entertaining.
