Ozai grew up in the fire nation too, royal. So he got the hardest indoctrination, same as we see in Azula.

Not just that, but he was a second son, he was never meant to rule, only to sit on the reserve bench should anything happen to Iroh.

He had to make himself important, while I guess Iroh never had to worry about their father's favoritism that much. So he was able to concentrate on different things and develop differently and care about different things.

Now how do you make yourself important when you already have a perfect brother?

You marry an ancestor of an avatar to (hopefully) get a model example of a child. A perfect one, because you need to be perfect to matter.

Zuko failed that, meaning he failed. Zuko was not what Ozai wanted (or needed).

Of course Ozai was an adult and in the end his decisions were his. But he never knew another way. He never got shown anything else.

He is alone, partly because of himself, partly because of how he was raised I'd assume. How would he know what love really is or how to show affection without it feeling like weakness?

If I had been in Zhaos position to find that library with a spirit and learn something significant that would benefit the nation I am fire and flame for (literally)

I have the strong headcanon that Ozai is wearing makeup. Not much, just to always look the same. No matter if sick or healthy, just the same perfect face
