My unpopular opinion about Black Sails and I hope I don't sound like those annoying cinephiles is that a lot of people watch it with the mentality of it being a normal queer show and put mental tags into it to define the level of queerness the show has (and then get disappointed and angry at the show when those tags don't work with these characters), when its a show that needs to be watched without putting tags into it and be watched as just a queer show
Of course I don't mean not putting sexuality tags into the characters. Max is obviously stated as a lesbian in the show for example and you can perfectly say "she is a lesbian"
What I mean is trying to define the show as "queerbaiting", "bury your gays" , etc with a black and white lense on "If the show doesn't have that, then it's homophobic"
When Black Sails is a story about queerness against imperial power. It is what drives the story and characters, half of the characters are canonically queer and the other half have queer undertones going on them (Jack's relationship with Vane, everything about Silver, Miranda's relationship with Thomas and Flint, Madi's acceptance of Flint and how he became an important part of her life as well, clearly implying a future dynamic closer to the previously three mentioned).
Queerness is not just "he/she is bisexual, he is gay, she is a lesbian" , it's the opposition of societal expectations and lifestyles stated by the current time period and dominating society, in this case, the societal expectations from the British empire in the 1700's. Something that all the characters in the show carry in their stories.
Yes there is a critique to be had about the treatment and sexualization of f/f relationships in the show compared to the m/m ones, you can clearly tell a lot of stuff in the first season especially was the beginning of a queer story that the writers didn't know how to handle without accommodating to studio and audiences specifically, male cishet audiences and to a certain point, even themselves. (So yes, I agree this show needed more queer writers involved)
But, those shortcomings cannot define and deny the overall message and theme of the show.
So, trying to be like "Oh but Silver and Flint didn't get together at the end so it's shipbaiting/queerbaiting" when the whole thing about Silver and Flint is something more going on there but the circumstances and ambitions of the characters, didn't allow them to see each other in another way.
And this is not me saying it because Jon said it, I agree that writers who do not put something in the page and then are like "Oh did you know, they were gay???" are lame.
But Black Sails doesn't hide the fact that there was something going on, a lot of fans love to deny it because Silver didn't look at the screen and said "I love Flint"
But the relationship between Silver and Flint was something else , all the characters in the show noticed it , Madi even notices it and accepts it , the only two who couldn't see it were Silver and Flint themselves and that's what ended it.
You can define it how you want, romantic , queerplatonic , whatever , but there was love there and that, its queer in itself.
