These cabinet designs caught my eye, they are very beautiful aesthetically, and they illustrate the concept of interior spaces, the transparency of the cabinets allows you to see the form but at the same time look at the space inside.

Eliasson is someone I find very inspiring, I will definitely be referring back to his throughout my studies.

It is interesting to see the contrast between the two finished light boxes. I think the different materials used will each have a very different affect when they are positioned in interior environments. 

Final Concrete Result

Light box During my research into interior design psychology, Colour became a strong theme I was interested, the way it can affect the behaviour of its occupiers in a controlled built environment. I wanted to create a structure which had the power to input light into any space it was in. I thought about lights used in theatres for stage sets, and I remembered doing lighting for a performance a school and the light had a slot to put in the colours to project onto the stage. The idea of having one structure with the versatility to emit different colours of light was perfect for the purpose of testing the affects of colour on our behaviour in a built environment. I wanted to create the light out of concrete to incorporate the urban environment as that is what I am focusing on. The contrast between a dense heavy material and the fluidity of light and colour appealed to me. Before I made this light I was told it the concrete might break when it is taken out of the wooden mould as the lights walls are thin, and the slot for the Perspex will be fiddly. So it was an experiment... After putting the box wooden mould together, I used the hot wire to cut blue moulding foam to hold a gap for the slot when the concrete is poured in. I also used wire mesh within the walls of the box to give the concrete something to attach to and hold. I had to use two different types of concrete as mine ran out a third of the way through pouring. This is what affected the final result. 3 Days later I had to tap out the wood from the concrete. Whilst is was doing this I could see the second concrete I had used hadn't worked very well it was very sandy and didn't set solid. However, I liked the result as the rawness added to the authenticity of urban environments.

Interior Design Psychology - Forms Integrating curves into built environments is said to have a calming effect on its occupiers. Curves are a natural form and therefore incorporating them in urban environments (where nature is harder to find) can positively influence our mind set and wellbeing. Creating these structures was to communicate this theory. These are models of installations which would be 4m high. The idea of the shapes controlling to a certain extent your behaviour and mood interests me. It seems obvious that sharp angles are more dominant and fierce whereas curves are flowing and less oppressive. I used steel as it is more mailable, I was able to curve and angle this material.

I wanted to illustrate the sentimentality of the Café space in Ella’s mind. Playing with the idea of psychological space the Café brings as a structure within herself.
