posters style mai 68 inspired by the famous âLa beautĂ© est dans la rueâ(Beauty is in the street).
The iconic Les MisĂ©rables cover of Cosette sweeping the floors of the ThĂ©nardiers' inn by Ămile Bayard was introduced to Korean translations in 1918. This translation was done by Min Tae-won.
Additionally, in the space of 1910-25, there were five translations done in Korean of Les MisĂ©rables. The order of which goes: ABCêł (ì”ëšì , 1910) â ë ì°ž ë¶ìí (ì”ëšì , 1914) â ì ìŹ (ëŻŒíì, 1918~1919) â ì ìŹ(íëí, 1922) â ì„ë°ì„ì ì€ì (íëí, 1923) â ëȘž ë êłł ìë ìŹë (ì€ìČì, 1925). (x)
Image 1: The cover of Min Tae-won's 1918 translation | Image 2: Text sample of presumably the first pages of the first translation of Les Misérables in Korea from 1910, a month before the official annexation of the peninsula.
In Min Tae-won's debut work, he translated the title to "Aesa" meaning, 'The sad history of an individual or a country.' Interestingly, it was serialised from July 1918 until 8 February 1919...
What makes this date unique is that it was coincidentally the same date as the February 8 Declaration of Independence (2·8 ë 늜 ì ìž). This was a declaration made in Toukyou, Japan, by the Korean Young people's Independence Organisation.
"The declaration is widely viewed as a direct predecessor to the significant March 1st Movement, which in turn was a major catalyst of the independence movement." (x)
Min Tae-won's work, though a translation, at the same time Hangeul-ised the names of the characters:
ì„ë°ì„ â ì„ë°ì°Ź / ë§ë€ë â ë§ëë š / ìœì íž â êł ì€ë / íĄíŽ â í©ì ë š / ìëČ ë„Ž â ì°šëłŽìŽ / í ë넎ëì â íë ì¶ / ë§ëŠŹì°ì€ â íë§ì / íŹìŹë„Žë°© â íì í / ìíŹë â ëŽìžìŽâŠâŠ (x)
Only Myriel and Gavroche was kept the same name.
there is no coherent line that can be drawn without exception between art that makes you feel physically ill (good) and art that makes you feel physically ill (bad)
i love how gavroche thinks bahorel goes through life calling himself a beautiful man and thinks this is a logical thing

hii i saw âdegree in ancient greek tragedyâ and âwrites minecraft youtube fanfictionâ and i am peering politely over here. how do you do
Taking this opportunity to do some egregious self-promotion and direct people towards my âdegree in Ancient Greek tragedyâ blog @achillessulks and my âMinecraft Youtube fanfictionâ blog @lorefulgood I suppose haha.
My degree is in something super specialised that I usually summarise in professional spaces as âEuripidean and post-Euripidean theatrical interpretations of Homeric canonâ and casual spaces as âgot a good grade in reading the Iliadâ but thatâs the gist of it really. I did my time in the translation studies mines as well. I wrote that one negative review of The Song of Achilles and that one essay about Emily Wilsonâs Odyssey translation and probably some other things.
I also like Les Misérables (best book in the entire world).
i adore being confronted with the staggering breadth of what individual people can get obsessed with. there's nothing better than having That One Mutual with an advanced degree in ancient greek tragedy who writes minecraft youtube fanfiction to remind you that anyone can love anything

[My modest collection of Homer translations; Wilsonâs Odyssey is second from right.] Emily Wilson is the second woman to translate the Iliad
People have been very mean to Emily Wilson online lately. Iâve been on record as saying her translation of the Odyssey (or Iliad) wasnât my favourite, but do I agree with the accusations of oversimplification or inaccuracy? (Spoiler alert: no.)

This is a famous and extremely rare daguerreotype of the barricades on the Faubourg du Temple, captured in the early morning of June 25, 1848. Just look at how small these barricades are! They are certainly far from the monstrous barricades described by Hugo in 5.1.1. I suppose they are more like the ones people began to build on the morning of June 6, 1832 (as described in 5.1.13) and were quickly suppressed by the National Guard.
