this is a great question !! i never exactly decided this....if i dare to offer one critique of my own work it's that i could have been a little more explicit about this in the epilogue/post-epilogue bc i do think it's an important part of the story, and i do think mike's coming out would have had impacts on their popularity (era appropriate unfortuantely). moreover another wondering i have abt my own work is i don't know if mike coming out in the time period he did (early 2000s) would have happened as easily as i portrayed. i have a whole deleted scene that was like him grappling with whether or not he should Announce but i didnt include it bc it felt like adding conflict sprinkles on a conflict sundae if that metaphor makes any sense lol. i will share that scene included mike finding inspiration in celebs such as rob halford, bob mould, pete shelley...actually rob halford's coming out in 1998 is what (in my mind palace) i think made mike feel more able to come out.

but uhhh to answer your question (which i have had yet to do until this point in my longwinded answer LMAO) i think The Swinging Party are at peak fame in the mid-late 90s and kind of plateau from there. as the years go on i think TSP maintain an "if you know, you know" status and are regarded as sort of "unsung heroes" of the 90s (in ch.8 i mention one of their records selling 500k copies, but i don't think that happened immediately. it prob sold more over time). they remain popular with fans who were there at the start and find new audiences in the kids of those fans + people who are curious about finding new music. i imagine they can sell out a 2-3k cap venue in a big city, even later into their career.

the band i most closely modeled The Swinging Party after was Jawbox (<3). Jawbox never got as famous as some of their contemporaries did, but they left an incredible mark on the world of music and have inspired artists like deftones, at the drive-in, and braid. like jawbox and other bands, i imagine that once TSP is no longer at peak they find work doing other stuff like producing (bennnnnnn lowkeyyyyy), songwriting (mike + jason, who i bet do solo projects), being in other bands (qiang. drummers are a hot commodity), teaching (jason!! tbh!!), being parents, etc. they stay friends nd maybe make a record in the 2010s, maybe one in the 2020s. maybe one of their tracks gets featured in a cool gay indie movie. maybe an old song of theirs goes viral on tiktok and they get some residuals from it. idk.

TLDR i think they are big big in the 90s and then taper off in later years, all while remaining beloved + revered by The World of Alternative/Rock Music

The US Government is currently trying to pass an incredibly dangerous national law for trans youth called HR 2616.

This bill would ban all Federally funded schools from teaching about gender identity or sexual orientation, prevent teachers from using the correct pronouns and names for trans students, remove books with any trans representation in them, and even go as far as to prevent teachers from acknowledging trans identity AT ALL.

Any school that does not follow this will lose all federal funding. This bill would also require teachers to forcibly out trans students to their families, which would be fatal to any trans student with a transphobic Family or just hateful family in general. Trans people are already a group that already has some of the highest rates of being victim to suicide, domestic violence, and sexual assault.

This bill actively makes teachers put those innocent children at such a big risk. This bill has rapidly passed the house this week with support from all 209 republicans, as well as 8 democrats. But, it's still being voted on in the senate, which means there is still time to help stop this.

To help stop this, you can visit 5calls.org (look up 2616 in the search bar), one of the most top issues filed Oppose Attacks on LGBTQ+ Students. Once you put in your general location, it will pull-up contact information for your senator, and give you a script for calling them.
