ok so! there is an order to the games. there are two avenues you could pursue:

chronological order of release: Curious Village, Diabolical Box, Lost Future, Lost Specter, Miracle Mask, Azran Legacy,

This is the route I did.

pros: you get to see how the series developed in real time, you won't be led astray by plot threads that have yet to actually payoff as they weren't conceived yet, and you won't be thrust from modern Layton Azran Legacy writing into the less polished Curious Village writing, and you start with the beautiful 2d animation and sprites instead of the ugly ass 3d later on. (the 3d gets better but YIKES miracle mask models are not the best)

cons: You won't be getting the story in chronological order, and the characters introduced in the first three games will not appear in the second three (minus the main ones, of course), you'll have to wait until after the fourth game to see the movie unless you want spoilers.

chronological order of games: Lost Specter, Miracle Mask, Azran Legacy, Curious Village, Diabolical Box, and Lost Future.

pros: you end exactly where the series is supposed to end and on one of the best games- so you can easily transition into World of Stream whenever it comes out, you can watch the characters grow throughout the games (especially lil luke <3), you'll be able to watch the movie directly after the first game you play.

cons: you'll get a sweet tastes of 2d animation and sprites before going into ugly-town with miracle mask. the animations are still 2d but those sprites are not great, you'll go directly from the latest game to the earliest and the writing choices will differ dramatically-- and the characters won't exactly tackle what happened as it hadn't been planned yet.

Overall, I'd say Curious Village is the easiest to get into. Simple premise, no odd plot threads, and good puzzles.

Oh, and if you're an Ace Attorney fan then you can play the crossover game, too! I'd recommend it after playing some Layton games, as it'll make seeing Layton in Fucked Up Situations MUCH funnier.

Play it after Diabolical Box or Miracle Mask. I can't really decide which haha...

hershel and flora have an interesting relationship. flora wants to be close to hershel, but he's too scared to let her in. she feels like a burden, but asserts herself anyway as she doesn't have anyone else. it's a very... tense relationship they have. mostly out of obligation on hershel's part i think, and held back from being true from his fear. so... their fusion is VERY unstable.
