Overview of how I write them
I write stand-alone AUs of these two.
I try to specify if two fics are in the same universe or not.
Will include but not limited to two side characters: Silas and Sylvie.
They are also dating. Both boys. They have their own story I wonât be posting here. (Unless . . . ?)
My Space Aces can vary in age depending on the setting but their standard age is 19.
These two OCs are like my vent OCs and so Iâve made them flexible to fit any sort of scenario that I want. Thatâs the reason if they come off as inconsistent in my writing. I don't wanna stress about "staying in character."
Everything is completely my own content and ideas unless I use prompts in which case the prompts arenât mine but my take on them is.
I drew these characters myself and donât have a consistent art style but this is what my Space Aces look like. I drew all these (and many more) at widely different times so that's why nothing looks the same but I hope you can see the identifying characteristics.

Not a ship request but this is the quote of the year
I am so sorry this took me two days to see. Iâve been busy (working and writing and all that) and all my notifications on my main lately are just porn bots following me.
But Iâm so glad you found that amusing. I wrote it in a moment of âIâm writing a comedy right nowâ (I definitely was not) and I had to keep it. Definitely one of my favourite lines from that chapter.
This is a continuation or sequel to âNot Aloneâ that I was requested to write by @foragemefromthemoss / @sams-shark. Itâs kinda rushed itâs a happy ending I think. Enjoy there shouldnât be anything triggering.
Beeeep.

âStooop. . . Turâturn it . . . Turn it off. . .â
Whatever that horribly incessant alarm is ringing for can fuck off. Kevinâs too tired to do anything about it.
He reaches out blindly to smack his phone out of habit. Yank. His hand stops like itâs tied up or something.
âHuhâda hell?â Kevinâs voice is groggy and quiet. His mouthâs dry and the words come out crackly. But itâs enough.
Itâs enough to let Streber know heâs awake now.
âKevin! Youâre awake!â The excited and relieved words are not what Kevin was expecting to hear. He looks over to the sound, prying his eyes open with all his might. Sitting in the only available chair is a capeless Streber already halfway to his feet.
Itâs strange to see Streber without his cape. Heâs always wearing it to complete his silly Halloween aesthetic all year round. He always reminds Kevin of those kids, the three of them just always perpetually dressed up for Halloween.
So to see Streber without it catches Kevin wrong. Thereâs something small and unfinished about him without it. He looks vulnerable and bare and the more Kevin looks, the more he realises Streberâs shoulders are kinda small. The first thing Kevin really thinks at that is he could probably take Streber in a fight if heâs always been this small.
âSâStreâ. . . Ugh, water please?â Kevin tries to talk but his mouthâs too dry and he coughs before he can finish his thought.
âRight! Right! Hold on. Iâll get it.â Streber seems frazzled. Why? Kevin has no idea. Theyâre not close friends. Though Kevin supposes if he found even just a stranger hurt like Kevin was, heâd too be concerned.
Streber fully gets to his feet and rushes around looking for water. Heâs too nervous that Kevin sees him look past the water cooler twice without taking real notice.
While Streberâs struggling with haste to find the water, Kevin takes in his surroundings.
Heâs at the hospital. That explains the noise. Stupid ECG machine beeping like a motherfucker.
His armâs got an IV? Is that what it is? Kevin waggles his arm and watches the tube wiggle along with it. Itâs filled with red stuff. Heâs hooked up to a blood bag.
Whoa! Heâs hooked up a blood bag?! How much blood did he lose? Was he really going to die?! Is he on deathâs door now?! This is it, oh god, Iâm dyingâI lost too much bloodâIâm deadâ
Kevin doesnât realise his heartâs racing until the ECG starts going faster. The noise is like a bomb about to go off.
âKevin? Whatâs wrong?â The machineâs beeping alerts Streber to Kevinâs distress. Heâs never felt so exposed before. Kevin has half a mind to just take the finger clip off and shut the machine up before everyone in a one mile radius finds out heâs an anxious wreck.
âNoâcoughânothing. Fine.â The ECG doesnât slow down but it doesnât speed up and Kevin takes that time to do one of the breathing exercises his school therapist told him about in the ninth grade. Even now heâs skeptical at the efficacy of the exercise and feels stupid doing it.
In. . . .
One.
Two.
Three.
Out. . .
Stupid. Feels stupid.
Still the machine does go back to normal soon enough.
âHere.â In the time it takes for Kevin to calm down, Streberâs finally found the water cooler and little stack of paper cups. Kevin doesnât know when he stationed himself by the hospital bed with the cup held out. Streber might as well be a vampire with how stealthy he is.
âThanks.â Kevin takes the cup. The water is colder than he was expecting and his fingertips are chilled immediately. He drinks the entire cup, itâs not a lot of water (itâs a small cup) and gives it back to Streber.
Again, when Kevin looks at Streber, he looks off.
âWhereâs your cape?â
âRight there.â
Streber points at Kevin. Or more specifically at his lap. Kevin looks down.
Splayed out atop the hospital blanket is Streberâs black and green cape, clearly meaning to be an extra layer. It doesnât actually add anything itâs so thin, Kevin didnât even notice it until now. Still something about the gesture tugs at the sentimental strings in Kevinâs heart.
âOh.â Heâs not really sure what to say. Heâs never been in a position like this with Streber before. Itâs leaving an awkward pit in Kevinâs stomach.
He stares at the cape on his lap because itâs easier than looking at Streber.
âThanks. Again. I mean. Forâfor finding me. IâIâhehâI really thought I wasâthat I was gonna. . . That I was dead . . .â Kevin ignores the ECG picking up. He knows heâs nervous, it doesnât need to broadcast it to the whole goddamn hospital. He starts fiddling with the finger clip, tapping it against the back of his other hand, feeling the strange new weight of it while he talks.
Heâs never been this vulnerable with Streber before. Itâs strange and weird and comforting all in one.
âIt wasnât me. Well. I guess it was me, that found you, but I wouldnât have even known to look if it werenât for those two kids.â Streber sounds casual but Kevin can hear the awkwardness underneath. Guess Streber feels the same way he does.
Wait. Kids?
âWhatâwhat do you mean?â Kevin finally looks at Streber.
âI was walking near the candy shop and these two kids in costumes came running towards me. I donât think they were paying attention âcause one crashed right into me.â Streber chuckles at mention of one of kids bumping into him. âThey said you were hurt and needed help. Guess I mustâve been the first adult they saw and recognised so they wanted me to help you.â Streber has this fond look in his eyes.
He must be a kid person. Kevin canât relate. Rather he wishes he couldnât relate because if Kevin were to be honest with himself, if anything happened to those two monsters, heâd be crushed. Doesnât mean heâs forgiven them just yet for this (and everything else theyâve done) but they do have good hearts in the end.
âIâm really glad I listened to them and went looking. Part of me thought they were playing a trick on me. Iâm really glad.â The relief in Streberâs voice is surprisingly deep. More so than what Kevin would think is appropriate for their level of intimacy (that of just barely above acquaintances).
Kevinâs eyes sting before he can do anything about it and his throat tightens again, he wishes he didnât finish that water so quickly. Heâs crying before he can stop himself.
It alarms Streber more than Kevin would have thought to see him crying. âWhoa, Kevin! Whatâs wrong?â
Kevin wipes his eyes with his hand that isnât hooked up. Heâs shaking his head as he talks, ânothing. IâI donâtâI donât know whyâwhy Iâm crying either.â And he really doesnât.
He just knows now that heâs not actually alone if someone as distant as Streber is to him cares enough to go this far for him, then maybe heâs gonna be okay.
An angsty fic set when Kevin is literally fucking stabbed?? And you know, is left alone. I dunno. I projected way to hard on this man. Enjoy.
If you were to ask Kevin on any other day, heâd probably say kids are fine. Not great. But fine. Sure they can be loud, obnoxious and just downright heartless sometimes but that doesnât mean they donât have some good points to them.
Sometimes kids are nice. They spill their collection of stupidâahemâcool Halloween decorations (rubber spiders, plastic skeletons and even severed hands with actual (fake) blood coming out the stump) all over your pristine glass counter cause they just wanna show it all to you. Thatâs cute right?
Well, if you ask Kevin today, heâd adamantly tell you kids can go to hell and they can take their creepy-ass fuckinâ murder dolls with them.
God! Damn! It!
. . .
Bloodâs slippery. Kevin always thought it was sticky, he didnât realise it could be this slippery. Guess thatâs what you get for thinking coloured cornstarch would be at all identical to the real thing.
Still. This seems really slippery? Worryingly slippery? Is there something wrong with him?
His hand keeps sliding down his leg when he presses down. Pressure right? Thatâs what youâre supposed to do to stop from dying right? Well heâs pressing and itâs not working; his hand just keeps moving like his legâs a damn slipânâslide or something.
Kevin looks over at the discarded, clearly ineffectual bubblegum Bandaid (that has no doubt introduced a ton of bacteria to his exposed system) and glares at it.
Those damn kids.
This is all their fault. Every bad thing that thrusts itself upon Kevinâs unsuspecting life is always their fault.
If it werenât for them, he wouldnât be a living demon detector (canât go to movie theatres anymore because his eyes glow in crowds now, itâs really distracting at the movies) if it werenât for them, cops and dealers alike wouldnât occasionally drop by the store for random drug busts and hold him at gun point (those do wonders for Kevinâs anxiety).
Theyâve really outdone themselves this time around. Those two kids will be accredited with Kevinâs tragically and untimely but ultimately very boring death via murder doll.
Terrific.
The adrenaline has faded now. The blood just keeps going though, and Kevin doesnât think he move anymore. Otherwise heâd be making his way over to the counter to grab his phone (heâd left it charging when he was attacked) to call for help.
He tries a subtle little shimmy to test the waters. Nope. Nope. Not happening. His entire leg is cold and hot and itâs throbbing and his hand keeps moving, it just keeps moving and moving and oh god itâs coldâitâs hotâand Iâm aloneâ oh god Iâm aloneâno oneâs going to find meâIâm going to die hereâIâm going to die here cold and alone in a goddamn confectionery shopâI donât even like candyâ
âKevin? You in there?â The jingle of the bell pulls Kevin from his torrential thoughts. The lights are still off and his vision is too blurry with tears and sweat, he canât see whoâs there. At least itâs someone. âKevin?â
Wait? Is that Streber?
âStreâStreber? Iâover. . . over here.â Kevin wants to raise his voice, he wants to definitely be found but he also doesnât want Streber to know heâs been crying either. Still that might not matter in the end of he dies here because his pride wouldnât let him be loud enough.
Thereâs a quiet little gasp, the jingle of the bell, and hurried footsteps rushing towards him. Kevin wants to cry even more. Relief. Cry from relief. Not from pain. Heâs not like, a baby or anything you know?
âIsâis thatâis that blood?â The alarm in Streberâs voice mimics the alarm Kevinâs been feeling since he was stabbed. It makes him want to laugh. He doesnât. Too scared itâll hurt.
âYâuhâyeah. Itâs . . . blood. . . Was kinda stabbed. Whatâwhat are you doing here?â Kevin is slowly making out Streberâs silhouette hovering over him.
âMe? IâmâI was lookingâwait nevermind that! You need to get to the hospital. Can you stand?â Streber doesnât come any closer from what Kevin can tell, in fact, he takes a half step backwards.
Kevin places both palms flat on the floor and tries to push himself up. His right palm slips a bit on the smooth floor. Cold hot flashes run through him, the throbbing in his leg intensifying. Screaming in front of Streber would be way too embarrassing so Kevin practically shreds the inside of his cheek to keep quiet. He stops trying to get up. âNot really. Help?â
Streber hesitates again. Heâs already abnormally stealthy but with the lights out and Kevinâs blurry vision, heâs especially hard to spot. Kevin would almost be scared heâs left him for dead if not for the bell staying silent.
âStreber?â Kevin knows he and Streber arenât exactly close (theyâre just barely friends through a mutual friend group) but surely Streber wonât actually leave him here?
âRight. Right. Okay. Hold on.â Streber sounds urgent and concerned. Thereâs a rustling of clothes and Kevin can just barely make out Streberâs quiet little muttering of effort. His muttering is replaced with the bright flash of his phone screen. Streber must be calling for help.
Good. Because the idea of only having Streber to move him to the hospital seems like cruel and unjust punishment, all that moving and jostling and bleeding, oh god itâs still bleedingâIâm still bleedingâthis is it Iâm going to dieâ
âKevin, whatâs wrong? Heyâhey! Stay with me here. KeâKevin, hey.â Something frigid is on Kevinâs face. It shocks his system back into order. Streberâs hands are so much colder than should be humanly possible. On any other day Kevin might hate the feel, but right now, itâs a welcomed change to the cold hot flashes heâs been experiencing.
âBreathe Kevin, itâs okay. Helpâs coming.â Has Streberâs voice always been this comforting? Thereâs something strained about it though, like heâs clenching his teeth. Maybe heâs scared of blood.
Streber starts breathing exaggeratedly and it takes Kevinâs brain a full second to catch on that heâs supposed to copy him. But it gets there and he followâs Streberâs example.
Once the fog clears, Kevin just wants to shut down. The throbbing in his leg hasnât subsided but itâs numb. His eyelids are too heavy and everythingâs blurry anyway so Kevin letâs them fall. He just barely hears Streber talking as he drifts.
âThatâs it. Okay. Itâs okay Kevin. Helpâs coming. Youâll be okay.â
Thereâs a siren in the distance but Kevin doesnât pay any mind to it. Heâs too focused on the refreshing chill of Streberâs hands on his face and the sound of Streberâs quiet voice spilling words of comfort.
Itâll be okay. Heâll be okay. Heâs not alone.

A short fic of Kevin and Streber on a coffee date set just a bit before Tender Treats. Enjoy. Dedicated to @foragemefromthemoss / @sams-shark thank them for bringing this into the world. UwU
The linoleum floor is squeaky and keeps catching on the heel of Kevinâs shoes. The lights are all white LEDs in tight rows along the ceiling. They might not be as hot as the sun but they sure as fuck are just as bright.
Fuckinâ Walmart.
Kevin has been squinting for the past thirty minutes. His eyes hurt, his ears tooâfrom all the high pitched squeaking happening everywhereâand he just wants to leave.
And he wouldâve already, ages ago, if it werenât for the excited hand of his dumb boyfriend gripping his and dragging him all across the store against his will.
âStreeebeer! This isnât coffee.â Kevin knows heâs whining and he knows itâs futile to whine in the first placeâdidnât work the first twenty times he did itâbut he doesnât care.
Said boyfriend turns around so fast he almost knocks Kevin out with the shopping basket hanging on his wrist. Itâs full of decorations. Halloween decorations to be precise.
Itâs the giant plastic skeleton head protruding outward that Kevin specifically has his eyes. Took Streber damn near fifteen minutes of looking at practically identical skeletons to finally pick that one. Kevin wants to throttle it.
âWeâre almost done. I promise,â Streber says once again.
Heâs been saying that for more than half an hour now.
Kevin just doesnât believe him anymore. He groans, sagging his shoulders forward in an exaggerated fashion. "You said that alreadyyy!"
"Just five more minutes, I promise." Streber tugs Kevin's hand gently, pulling him farther down the candy aisle. "Then we'll go for coffee, I swear." His toothy little grin is what ultimately keeps Kevin's feet from just planting in the floor.
Kevin rolls his eyes as heâs dragged once again, âfine."
~
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry." Streber places down the to-go cups on the little table. His hands burn but he doesnât seem to notice. "Seriously, I'm sorry. I just really wanted to make sure I had everything and everything was just so cool."
Kevin doesn't uncross his arms, not even at the arrived of his eagerly awaited coffee. Streber slides into his seat, plastic shopping bags full of Halloween memorabilia crinkling rather loudly. Kevin's eyebrow twitches at the sound, making Streber cringe inwardly of embarrassment, drawing his shoulders and head down like a sad little bat.
Kevin wants to stay mad but his coffee is cooling and Streber's hunched shoulders of adorable shame, his little toothy frown, all of it makes it so hard to stay even just mildly perturbed with the man.
So Kevin uncrosses his arms, making a big show of sighing in defeat. With his hands now free, he grabs his coffee and takes a big sip as if it were a shot. His tongue and throat are scalded but such is the penance for being a whiny bitch all day.
âAlright, alright. Youâre forgiven,â he says, coughing up hot air from the shot. âCanât exactly fault you for wanting to go shopping with Halloween so close.â Kevin sets his cup down on the table and offers Streber a quick little smile before heâs frowning once again. Not his fault heâs cursed with resting bitch face.
In hindsight, it was pretty dumb of Kevin to walk past the Walmart with Streberâthe windows decorated in all their hallowed eve gloryâand not expect his Halloween fanatic of a boyfriend to not want to go in. So if you really think about it, Kevin messed up his own date plans. Not Streber and his compulsive need to get everything Halloween ready for his annual haunted house.
Streber perks up instantly at the sight of Kevinâs tiny smile, straightening in his seat so fast he crinkles his shopping bags again. Kevin doesnât mind this time. He rolls his eyes much more playfully this time. The haunted house will be epic after all.
Streber takes his red velvet hot chocolate with much more pep in his step than when he first sat down. âSo youâll help, right?â He takes the lid off and sets it asideâas per usual. Kevin used to tell him to just take the fangs out but Streber always refuses, saying theyâre real, so Kevin doesnât waste his breath anymoreâbefore taking a big sip, whip cream coating his top lip. Any trace of dark lipstick Streber may have had is now covered by the stuff.
âWith what? Your haunted house?â Kevin goes for his cup again. He takes a smaller sip than before, his tongue still stinging.
The cafe is warm compared to the autumn air outside. His hand is especially hotâthe coffee and allâbut he doesnât mind. Itâs not loud but Kevin does keep hearing small little snippets of conversation from the other tables around him. The cafe is a much better date destination than fuckinâ Walmart.
âOf course. What else, silly? Gotta make sure the place is ready for all the trick-or-treaters.â Streber is practically rattling his seat, heâs so excited about Halloween.
That or all the sugar from his hot chocolate. Kevin has no idea how Streber stomachs the stuff. Thought that probably has to do with him being surrounded by candy all day and thought of any more turns Kevinâs stomach like nothing else.
Still, thereâs something tempting about the whip cream on Streberâs lip. Kevin leans over the tiny tabletop and beckons with his finger. âCâmere,â he says calmly, not giving away any of his intentions.
Streber leans in just as Kevin asks, more confused than anything else. âWhat is it? Something on my faceâoh!â
Just as he thought, the whip cream isnât good at all. Itâs sweetâwith a hint of wax? Must be the lipstickâand itâs warm compared to Streberâs ice cold lips, a rather unpleasant dichotomy but Kevin couldnât give less of a fuck. He kisses Streber gently at first but something compels him to go as far as lick the whip cream away. Was probably the adorable little squeak Streber made earlier.
Kevin pulls back before he can be considered a deviant. The look of flushed surprise on Streberâs face makes all the risk worth it though. Kevin smirks, using his thumb to wipe away the excess of cream on his own top lip all while holding Streberâs gaze. He licks his thumb clean, looking down at the table for a napkin innocently.
âYeah. You had something on your face.â Kevin doesnât find any napkins so he just dries his thumb on his jeans before taking an innocent sip of his lukewarm coffee. âAnd sure. Iâll help with the haunted house.â
Perched on the window seat, Ace gazes out the window as a rather hot wind blew through the turning trees.
Autumn is here.
Ace looks over his shoulder. On the couch is Aec lounging in one of their lighter hoodies and thinner sweats. They're scrolling on their phone in a daze.
Normally Aec would be bundled up this time of year with a hot drink by their side. But this year hasn't cooled down quite yet and Aec hasn't frozen over yet. It still feels like summer most days and Aec acts as such.
Ace can't help but feel a little disappointed by the sight. Since it means Aec isn't dying for cuddles to keep warm like they usually would be by this time. They aren't treating Ace like their own personal heat-pack and it feels lonely.
Ace blames climate change.
"What?" Aec catches Ace staring at them.
"Nuthin'. . . Say, you're not cold?" Ace prompts as smoothly as he can. His face feels hot just from saying anything.
Aec shakes their head and goes back to looking at their phone. That's that then. Ace looks back out the window like a chastised dog.
"Why?" Aec must've caught Ace's deflation. Their phone now discarded on their lap, their full attention on Ace.
Ace looks back with a shrug. "No reason, was just wondering. Since, y'know, you get cold easily and it's already the middle of October." He doesn't mention anything about wanting cuddles. He's not about to sound needy and desperate, no way.
"Appreciate the concern, I'm fine. Climate change I guess," Aec says rather matter-of-factly, as they usually are.
Ace nods, willing to drop the subject and accept that he's not smooth at all. He'll just sit on the window seat and pretend to be a brooding victorian woman gazing mournfully out the window with one too many troubles locked in her heart. Cause's he's dramatic like that.
"Why are you moping now? What do you want?" Aec demands, crossing their arms.
Ace shrugs again. "Just . . ." he mumbles, feeling chastised once more, ". . . dles . . ." Ace says it so quietly his voice cracks from silent whisper to something utterly unintelligible.
He can sense Aecâs disappointed glare before he sees it.
âJust.â Ace tries again with no less hesitation. âCuddles. Havenât been much.â Even Ace isnât sure he understands what he said.
âAh,â Aec hums from the couch. They unfurl their arms and take off their hoodie in a quick, smooth motion. Aec tosses the garment on the floor and holds out their arms. Seems they got the message instantly.
Feeling rather embarrassed about it, Ace slowly gets down from the windowâs cushioned bench. Thereâs a hesitancy in each of his steps as he maneuvers across the small distance of the living room as drawn out as possible.
Ace wants to give himself some buffer room to collect himself before he inevitably plops down pathetically in Aecâs lap.
âHurry up. Youâre slow.â Aec gestures with their hands for Ace to move faster. Must be that their arms are growing tired being held out like that.
Feeling chastised once more, Ace finds himself taking bigger steps across the living room and is by Aecâs side in a mere moment.
His hands feel clammy and his neck feels hot. He doesnât take the initiative to just sit on Aecâs lap. Instead, Ace stand by the couchâs arm and holds his own like a shy child. Itâs not that heâs ashamed of wanting cuddles, itâs just that Aec is so perceptive and usually does everything for the both of them when it comes to things like physical affection, so Ace doesnât really have much experience in being assertive at all.
Aec seems to notice even that when they look Ace up and down once heâs at the couch. They practically sigh before reaching and grab Aceâs arm. Aec tugs him down and Ace lands ungraciously into his loverâs lap with an oof.
âThere, that was not so hard now, was it?â The smugness makes Ace want to curl up and hide in a hole from embarrassment. He did was it was gonna be inevitable after all.
A little standalone fic I wrote for a writing contest on a discord server I'm on, with the prompt fluff or angst.
âOoh, whatâs this?â
Silas looked over his shoulder at his roommate, Alistair. He was holding up an old photo. Silas had to squint to get a good look at it.
âOhâwait, what? What is that picture? Isâis that me?â Silas crawled closer to Alistair and took the photo out of his hand, inspecting it closely.
It was an old, greyed photo of Silas as a child, standing hand in hand with another child by a set of swings, both donning flower crowns.
Silas flipped the photo around, searching for some sort of information about the picture because he couldnât remember ever doing this or who the other kid even is.
âSo? Whatâs the picture?â Alistair leaned closer, trying to look over Silasâ shoulder.
ââDunno, doesnât say. Just says it was taken in 2004 so . . . Eighteen years ago apparently. God, how old was I then? 7, 8?â
Alistair leaned down even closer and looked at the photo once more. âWhoâs the other kid?â
âGood question. I have no clue.â
The mail slot clanked the arrival of a letter. Both Silas and Alistair turned their attention to the door.
âWonder what we got in the mail.â Alistair braced himself to stand but Silas beat him to his feet and headed over to the front entry. He saw the letter on the floor, a simple envelope sealed with wax. It was clearly not spam mail.
Silas turned the envelope over after taking a good long look at the insignia embedded in the wax seal. It was addressed to him. Elegant cursive littered the backside of the envelope, telling Silas of the senderâs origins.
âThe Royal Advisor to the Crowned Prince of Nephlis?!â Silas almost dropped the letter in his shock. Why would the royal advisor to a foreign prince be mailing him anything? Silas didnât even have any ties to the country of Nephlis. Not as far as he knew anyway.
âWhat? What are you talking about?â Alistair joined his roommate by the door, peering into Silasâ personal space to inspect the letter.
âWell, what are you waiting for, you should open it already. See what it says!â Alistair pulled the letter out of Silasâ hand but before he could rip the seal, Silas snatched it back.
âNot with your bare hands, you barbarian, go grab me a knife.â Silas pointed to the kitchen, holding the envelope up and behind his head, away from his grabby friend.
Alistair rolled his eyes but did as requested. He handed Silas a butterknife and Silas ripped the letter open smoothly with little damage to the paper.
He pulled out the letter inside and dropped the now empty envelope in favour of unfolding the letter with both hands.
âMr. Sayer,
By the Kingâs decree, you are hereby invited to journey to the kingdom of Nephlis to honour the commitment you share to the crowned prince through your marriage vows eighteen years prior. As the crowned princeâs coronation draws near, it is vital the crowned princeâs spouse be present henceforth. Arrangements have already been made for your travels.
Sincerely, Royal Advisor Enfield,â Silas finished the last sentence aloud, almost dropping the paper, his grip so slack, his jaw on the floor.
âMarriage? Spouse? Prince?! Iâm not married. Iâve never even met the guy! How can I be married to him!â Then it hit him. The photo. That mustâve been the wedding. But Silas couldnât even recall the full memory to be certain.
âSo? Youâre going right?â Alistair asked, much too excited for Silasâ comfort. How he wasnât just as freaked out as Silas was beyond him.
âWhatânoâI donât know.â
âYouâre kidding me. You have to go. Youâre being summoned. By the king! Ooh, I wonder if theyâll allow you a plus one. You know, like your best friend for instance?â Alistair waggled his eyebrows, a sneaky expression making its way to his baby face. Silas could barely answer, cut off by a sturdy knock at the door. The arrangements obviously. Whatever those were.
Alistair was quick to answer the door without taking the time to look through the peephole.
Standing outside the doorway were a tall, intimidating adult and a shorter, just as intimidating young man.
Before either Silas or Alistair could ask who they were or even invite them in, the tall individual pushed through the doorway and forced both Silas and Alistair out of the way to make room for the young man.
âWhaâhey! Watch it. Who even are you?â Silas barked, stepping into the strangerâs face without hesitation. They werenât bothered, and regarded Silas with one cold, calculating look before their attention was on the short man as they helped him inside the apartment before shutting the door like they owned the place.
âAre you the ones helping us travel to Nephlis like the letter said?â Alistair dared to ask the tall one, his tone much more diplomatic than Silasâ had been.
It wasnât the individual who answered, but the young man. He shook his head. âNo, quite the opposite, Iâm here to dissuade you from coming to my kingdom if I can.â He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a medallion with the same insignia the wax seal had borne. âIâm the crowned prince, next in line for the throne, Sylvie Faeris. Weâve been married since we were kids, you and I, Silas Sayer.â
Sylvie addressed Silas and only Silas. He wasnât mean with his words, but his tone clearly told that he wasnât happy with the present situation.
âHow? Weâve never met, I donât think. Iâve never even been to Nephlis before.â
Sylvie looked around the front entry, searching for something. When he didnât find it, he focused back on Silas in perplexion. âYou have the photo, do you not?â
âYep! We found it today, actually.â Alistair answered for his friend, running back to the living room to retrieve the photo. He came back just as quickly, waving it in his hand proudly.
Sylvie took the photo and handed it to his companion who inspected it very closely before they looked at Sylvie and nodded. âRight then,â he said resolutely, not bothering to reveal whatever thought it was he just had.
âCan you please, please, explain how in the fuck weâre married? How does that photo mean anything?â Silas urged.
âDid your mother never tell you? Weâve met before. Your mother used to have a position in the royal court as an advisor to the queen. Whenever she was busy, she left you in the castleâs care. We played together often. And one day, while our mothers were out with us, having tea, you proposed by the swings. You made us flower crowns and told me weâd be together forever, that I was your best friend. When my mother noticed, she took a picture of us as we said our vows. Then, you moved away and I never saw or heard from you again.â
Silas had to sit down, his legs were jelly and wouldnât support him standing for a moment longer. So he sat and leaned against the wall.
âHow . . . how come I donât have anyâany memory of this? How could I have forgotten all of this?â
The princeâSylvie put his medallion pack in his pocket, crossing his arms after. âHow should I know?â He says very unhelpfully. Though Silas could hear a hint of hurt in the otherâs words.
âWait, Silas. Didnât you have an accident around then? No, yeah, I remember, I heard your mom telling my dad about it when you guys came over for the day. Your mom was saying how worried she was since you had recovered otherwise, but were still missing all your memories from before the accident. I think thatâs what she said anyway.â Alistair sat on the floor beside his friend, patting his shoulder rather awkwardly, but comforting in its own way.
âWhy didnât she tell me? About any of this?â It was a rhetorical question, really, Silas knew no one in the room had the right answer.
âI donât know why your mother never told you any of this, but at least now I know why you never once tried to find me.â Sylvie leaned against the shut doorway, refusing to look at Silas for even a moment.
âWhat now then? We divorce right? Thatâs why youâre here, right? You donât want to be married to me, I donât want to be married to you. Divorce and problem solved.â Admittedly, he was a bit crass with his phrasing, but Silas couldnât say he knew the prince, even if the prince knew him like he claimed he did. After all, it seemed like the prince regarded Silas as a childhood friend from the way he told of their past.
Still, as he said it, Silas saw Sylvie twitch before his expression went stony. Trying so hard to be unreadable, Silas knew the prince was hiding how much he was truly bothered by this situation. Clearly, he hated Silas with how he was acting.
Sylvie didnât respond though, he just kept staring at the floor.
âYour highness,â the princeâs companion finally spoke, drawing his attention.
Sylvie shared a look with his advisor in which his expression seemed to break and he heaved a sigh. âYeah, youâre right. Letâs go then.â
The advisor nodded, saying no more as they pulled out a folded paper from inside their coat, grabbing a pen from their breast pocket. With a graceful click of the pen, the advisor handed both to Silas.
âSign this.â Their instructions were as short as their tone, leaving no room to further a conversation. Silas unfolded the paper, too intimidated by the advisor to ask any questions.
He read through the document quickly, skimming the headers and bolded words, ignoring the fine print as one does.
âI sign this and weâre divorced?â He asked, just to be safe. The advisor nodded, while Sylvie kept still, having resumed looking at the floor stoically. âAlright then, here you go.â Silas
pressed the paper to the floor and signed his name on the dotted line without a momentâs hesitation. He gave the pen and paper back to the advisor, standing as he went.
âWeâre done here, then, right?â
âYep.â
Sylvie spitefully responded, hurt evident in his voice. He pushed himself off the door, ready to leave at any moment.
âYou donât seem happy. I thought this was what you wanted?â Silas couldnât help himself from asking.
Sylvie glared. He looked about ready to snap. âWhat I wanted was to not be married to someone who doesnât give a damn about me. I came here, thinking you knew about me all this time and just didnât care to find me. Yet when I arrive, I find out that really, it was out of your control, youâyou just didnât know! Iâve spent years thinking about you, thinking of the promises we made to each other by those swings and how I was fully prepared to honour them when the time came and you werenât. Iâve hated you for years, thinking you hated me! For years I kept looking forward to the day you would come back. And you never did and I never got to know why.â
Sylvie had to stop to breathe, having worked himself up. âThis isnât easy for me, being here like this. I agonised for days whether I should sign those papers or not. The hope that you might come back still and explain yourself after all this time, and that weâd continue where we left off as kidsâI just couldnât let go of it. . . And then here you are, and you sign them like itâs the easiest thing in the world because youâyou donât even know who I am! GodâI feel so stupidâfor thinking I ever meant something to you. That youâd decide not to sign, that you still wanted to be with meââ Sylvie cut himself off too late.
Heâd spilled his guts in a moment of impassioned rage and although it felt freeing to get it all of his chest, he never actually wanted Silas to know any of it. Those thoughts and feelings were meant for the confines of his journals, meant to be told to Aeson, his advisor and only friend to hear and validate him for when things got too bottled up inside him.
Sylvieâs outburst had stunned Silas, a heavy silence falling over the four of them. Silas wasnât sure what to say. Comforting him felt inappropriate, given the situation but apologising also felt wrong because Silas didnât think he had anything to apologise for. Plus, Silas imagined any measly little apology he could come up with wasnât what Sylvie wanted anyway.
âWhatever, I donât care anymore.â Sylvie crossed his arms, turning around to face the door. He didn't have any patience left to wait and listen to whatever crushing rejection Silas would give.
He didnât want to hear it anyway. He got what he came for in the end.
This is an alphabet story journal prompt I wrote in class with the prompt "sailing adventure" so enjoy my little pirate adventure.
~
Afternoons donât normally carry a rolling fog but thatâs not the case in this particular part of the seas.
âBegone from this place!â bellowed a ghastly, faceless voice. Crewmates all over the ship were shivering and shaking, wanting their captain to withdraw.
Drawback, he wouldnât though, theyâd sailed so far to turn back now.
Even if the seas were haunted, the captain didnât care, they were gonna find the treasure they set out for.
Fear played no part so the captain, holding firm, directed his crew to push forward into the misty seas.
Gaining speed was difficult though, there seemed to be very little wind hitting the sails.
âHow dare you venture into my domain!â the voiceâs scream shook the entire boat, casting waves across the ocean that crashed against the boat.
âI will have your heads!â
Just as the ghostly scream echoed across the boat, the captain raised their sword high above their head and said, âBe not afraid men! That infernal ghost cannot touch us!â
Karma would befall such an arrogant pirate captain.
Looming above the frightened pirate crew was a dark storm cloud that drifted towards them previously concealed by the fog. Many would have heeded the ghostly threats and warning and given up. Not this pirate captain though.
Only but a thunder cloud, the captain thought to himself and urged the boat forward.
Paddling got the vessel moving once it was clear the sails werenât. Quiet stillness settled over the ocean, the blanket of fog hiding any dangers from sight.
âReally now! See my men, there is nothing to be so frightened of.â
Such hubris.
The captainâs confidence was unmatched.
Unlike his men, the captain only thought of the treasure ahead of him, not of the lives of his crew.
Very subtly, there was a rumble coming from deep below the water. Water began to rise and waves started to grow until they were bigger than the pirate ship.
âXebecs! Such a lovely ship. Unfortunate for you, I must dispose of you vermin!â
Yearning for cover and safety was pointless, the crew could only watch in abject horror as massive waves came crashing down on their ship.
Zotting the ship with the ferocious might of the stormy seas gave the unruly spectre little comfort but he did it all the same.
This is a journal prompt I wrote for class, based on the opening sentence of The Catcher In The Rye, which I have never read before.

âIf you really want to hear about it, the first thing youâll probably want to know is where I was born, and what my lousy childhood was like, and how my parents were occupied before they had me, and all that David Copperfield kind of crap, but I donât feel like going into it, if you want to know the truth.
After all, Iâve been grilled over and over again about it and I donât want to go over it again for the millionth time. There isnât a clear cut answer why I did it. Hell, I donât even think thereâs a murky answer either. I just did it. I donât know what was going through my head at that time but something dark possessed me, thatâs for damn sure. I ainât never done anything like that before and looking at how things are, I never will again.
It was easy though, terrifyingly so. Sometimes I catch myself thinking back to that night in a dreamlike trance and when I snap out of it Iâm back here and that bliss I felt is gone, leaving me cold and angry. I could probably do it again, Even better than before too. I know where I went wrong yâsee? Iâm a clever man, I learn from my mistakes like any other. The more I dwell on it, the more excited I find myself becoming. Remorse has already slipped away at this point. The only thing stopping me now is this infernal cage Iâm in, these accursed chains that bind me.
See, it wasnât my childhood, lousy as it was, I donât think, that made me turn out like this. Wasnât my parents either. I think this was just an inevitable urge within me waiting to come out. See, âcause that night was normal for the start. Clarice, as lovely as she was, tried to make me dinner for when I returned home. I didnât hate her but I donât think I ever loved her either. It was more I tolerated and benefited from her and our marriage.
As much as that woman tried, she couldnât once make a half-decent meal to save her life. We ordered in a lot.
So, there I was, cleaning the dishes after dinner, Clarice in the living room. She had this habit of humming whenever she found it too quiet for her liking. It hadnât bothered me until that night. I didnât know something so trivial could make a man so furious. Next thing I knew, Iâd smashed the plate in my hand and took the sharpest shard into the living room and I just started stabbing and I didnât stop until Iâd broken the shard too small to use no more.â

This is a stand-alone fic where Alistair's an angel and Aeson is a human. Refer here for more info.
Worse things have certainly happened, Aeson is positive of that, but this is pretty bad. Okay, maybe not bad, more just insanely troublesome and inconvenient. To anyone else, it would probably even be a blessing.
To be visited by an angel.
But for someone like Aeson, who just wants to live a quiet and uneventful life, who doesnât even believe in that sort of thing, itâs one of the worst possible things to happen to them.
It was a purely coincidental encounter, Aeson is certain. Theyâd come across a drunkard passed out on the bench at their bus stop and they donât know what came over them, but they helped the young man that night before carrying on home. The next day, the man from the bus stop showed up at Aesonâs doorstep, claiming to be a fallen angel wanting to thank Aeson for their goodwill. And now the angel wonât leave them alone no matter how much Aeson asks him to.
Itâs been a very trying few weeks.
âIâm working now, donât bother me.â Aeson glances at the angelâAlistairâglaring harshly before leaving the living room. Aeson sequesters themself in their studio. Theyâre a freelance artist, allowing themself to work from home.
Workingâs been hard to do with an unwanted guest getting into trouble every minute of the day, so Aesonâs vowed theyâll get some real work done today to make up for the lost time before they get even more stressed out than they already are.
They sit down, put on some music and get down to business.
Aeson works for maybe fifteen minutes before thereâs a scream for help elsewhere in the apartment. They want to ignore it and keep working but they canât ignore the urgency in the angelâs voice.
Aeson paused the music, quickly saving their work. They hastily extricate themself from their desk and chair and rush out of their office into the living where they heard the scream originate.
Aesonât isnât sure what theyâre expecting to find. A bloody crime scene maybe. Or a scene of utter destruction maybe, from the way Alistair shrieked. They certainly werenât expecting what reality has to offer.
Alistair, an actual holy being, crouched atop the couch using a throw pillow as a meagre shield. Heâs cowering pathetically, whimpering like a frightened animal. Aesonât doesnât see the cause for distress right away. Theyâre too busy internally mocking Alistair to notice. Itâs only when the angel notices Aeson that they find out the source because Alistair oh so helpfully points it out, frantically pointing at Aesonâs cat.
Ah, they know what happened now.
âWhatâs wrong, now?â They still want to know and hear it from the angel himself though.
Alistairâs hand shakes as he points at Nuggy Chicky, who is sitting down on the floor, grooming herself in a very innocently, but smug manner. As cats do.
âIt attacked me! Your feline beast bit me!â The angel wails. Aeson canât see any visible marks or blood on Alistair so at most it was probably just a warning nip on Nuggy Chickyâs part and nothing more.
âWell, were you bothering her?â Aeson asks condescendingly, showing no concern for the angel.
Alistair turns shocked eyes on the human. âAre you trying to say I deserve to be attacked?â he demands indignantly.
Aeson doesnât confirm nor deny.
Alistair huffs when Aeson doesnât respond, his hand lowering from his assailant as he focuses on Aeson. âEven so,â Alistair starts to say, âdoesnât your beast know Iâm an angel?â
Aeson wouldâve laughed in Alistairâs face if they were in a better mood, but with how annoyed theyâre with the angel and all his trouble, they donât have the energy to do so.
âEven if she knew, she wouldnât care,â Aeson deadpans, walking over to Nuggy Chicky. They kneel down, softly stroking the catâs forehead.
Aeson admires their pet fondly for a few seconds before glancing over to the angel with a very cold expression. It makes the angel flinch and Aeson enjoys the satisfaction blooming inside them.
Theyâve never intimidated an angel before meeting Alistair and it feels good to know they can.
âYouâre not as high and mighty as you think you are, especially to a cat.â Aeson has not been merciful with their blunt, cold reality checks towards Alistairâs inflated ego and sense of superiority over mortal beings.
Alistair does not take these reality checks well and usually reacts like a bratty child. This time is now different.
Alistair crosses his armsâsomething he learned from television much to Aesonâs annoyanceâand frowns deeply, looking every bit the brat Aeson thinks of him as. âYou donât have to say stuff like that all the time, I get it already.â
Oh.
Aeson didnât expect Alistair to react so dejectedly. He usually reacts hugely, saying more, yelling sometimes even, and he normally sounds much angrier. Aesonâs never heard Alistair sound so genuinely heard before.
They stall, their hand stopping mid-pet atop Nuggy Chickyâs head. Aeson feels hot with an unfamiliar sense of shame. They need to leave, run away from the tension Alistairâs created. Itâs making Aeson feel like the only asshole in the room. Which is preposterous because Alistair has been nothing but insufferable the entire time heâs been staying with Aeson.
Aeson gets off the floor hastily and walks briskly back to their studio. They shut the door with a soft click. The clear, overwhelming sense of guilt working its way through them relieves Aeson because it means theyâre not a completely horrible person with no hope for redemption. They just need to wait a bit and apologize to Alistair for being a rude asshole to him.
Aeson resumes working with a distinct lack of motivation than before.
They work for hours, managing to distract themself from the ever-growing guilt inside them from all the self-reflection of their past
treatment towards the angel.
Okay, maybe Aeson didnât fully distract himself, but they did manage to complete their work goal.
âOkay, Aec, now that youâre done working, you have no excuse to avoid him. Now stop being a little bitch and go apologize for being a little bitch.â Aeson gives themself a rather harsh but daily needed pet talk after they finish putting all their work away for the day.
Going back into the living room, Aeson rehearses in their head their apology, double-checking its sincerity and clarity before they deliver it.
Alistair is found on the couch, staring at Nuggy Chicky as she grooms herself on the floor. He still looks hurt but no longer scared by the cat. If anything, Alistair looks intrigued by her.
If Alistair notices Aeson arriving, he doesnât show it.
Standing in their own living room has never felt so awkward before. The quiet tension that settled before hasnât dissipated at all, itâs only gotten worse. Aeson doesnât know how to start now that theyâre here. Apologizing seemed so much easier in their head.
They know as the offending party, they should be the one to start, to break the silence themself, but Aeson doesn't know what to say that wonât just create more tension.
They stand at the cusp between the living room and hallway, feeling like a fool with each passing second they donât do anything.
âHow long are you going to stand there all quietly, human?â Alistair breaks the silence before Aeson can and they immediately regret not being the one to do it first.
Taking Alistairâs question as an invitation, Aeson walks stiffly to the couch, stopping in front of the angel.
Aesonâs never considered themself a coward. Theyâre not timid, not shy, and certainly not afraid of confrontation. They are, however, an awkward, asocial individual with very little experience when it comes to apologizing to others. Still, Aeon doesn't let their weaknesses stop or hold them back.
âIâve come to apologize to you.â They just go on and say it. Blunt and clear, thatâs how they roll. âI realize now that my words have been hurtful to you on several occasions and so Iâm sorry for the way Iâve been speaking to you.â That should be good. If they add too much, it could muddle everything up and they could end up ruining the entire apology.
It does feel good, however, to have apologized. They still feel bad but their conscience feels lighter now that theyâre trying to make amends.
Alistair looks down at the floor, a contemplative expression forming. Such an expression makes the angel look so much older, more mature than his baby-faced appearance lets on. It reminds Aeson that theyâre dealing with an immortal being, and theyâre suddenly acutely aware of how disrespectful theyâve truly been towards Alistair.
Such a thought has Aesonâs head swarming with all the different ways Alistair could enact revenge against them for their behaviour.
The fact that the only bad thing Alistair's done in retaliation is simply verbal and nothing more says a lot about his character and level of restraint.
Alistairâs silence has left Aeson thinking their apology wasnât good enough. He doesnât say anything for a good five minutes, leaving Aeson tense on their feet.
Theyâre about to apologize again when the angel finally moves, lifting his head. He locks his gaze onto Aesonâs eyes, forcing them to look back. Aeson normally despises eye contact, but now isnât the time to be focused on themself.
âThank you for the apology.â Alistairâs words sound careful like heâs reciting a script. He probably is. The angel has had to familiarize himself with how humans talk to each other culturally. âIâm sorry too. For earlier. You were right, I was bothering your feline and so she bit me.â
Aeson quickly glances over to Nuggy Chicky at the mention of her. Sheâs laying on her side, sleeping.
They focus back on Alistair. âSheâs fine. Donât worry about it.â Alistair nods, lowering his head, looking down at his lap. Aeson takes the lapse in conversation as an opportunity to sit down. They sit at the end of the couch as far
from Alistair as is allowed.
Now that theyâve apologized and so has Alistair, Aeson doesnât know where to go from here. Itâs not like the two of them are friends.
The room still feels awkward but itâs different now, a lighter, less intense sort of awkward. The kind that happens between strangers with nothing to talk about. Aeson is not about to engage in any sort of small talk though. They hate small talk and would rather subject themself to an awkward silence than participate in small talk.
Alistair does not share this opinion. âSo,â the angel starts, clearly still thinking of something to say. Aeson doesnât move. âIs everything okay now? Are you still angry at me?â
Alistair surprises Aeson. Thatâs not small talk. Thatâs big talk, deep talk. Aesonât wasnât expecting the angel to be so bold to want to talk feelings but then they remember heâs an angel and probably doesnât know about humans and their reluctance to open up.
Aeson shakes their head. âNo. Not anymore.â Thinking back, theyâre not sure if they were even really mad at Alistair in the first place or if they were just mad at themself for being such an unreasonable dick over the past few weeks.
Aeson knows theyâre not a paragon of kindness but they donât want to actively be a bad person either, which they have been to Alistair since the start of their strange cohabitation.
âOh, Iâm glad.â Alistair sounds disappointed like he was hoping Aeson would say more, open up more. Alistair slides across the couch not at all subtly, really, he makes quite a show of it, making little grunts of effort as he shimmies, shaking the cushions. Aeson watches in the corner of their eyes, wondering what the angel plans to do now.
âDid you finish your work?â Oh, thereâs the small talk. Alistair mustâve noticed that Aeson doesnât want to talk about todayâs conflict anymore.
Aeson, against their better judgement, reluctantly nods, engaging in the small talk they hate.
Alistair smiles at the reaction, his face lighting up like a childâs.
âThen, could we do something together?â
Aesonâs stoic expression cracks a bit, their jaw going slack. âYou . . .â they start and stop, âyou want to do something with me?â
The notion that the angel actually wants to spend time with someone whoâs always rude to him is shocking. Aesonâs first instinct is that itâs a trick, but Alistairâs too good for that.
Sure, heâs annoying with a huge ego and superiority complex, but at his core, Alistair's one of the most morally purest people Aesonâs ever met. They attribute that to his literal angelic status.
Alistair laughs like Aesonâs just a hilarious joke, further confusing them.
âOf course,â he says easily, âwhy else am I here?â I want to be in your company. Iâve said so since the start.â The light, carefree tone in Alistairâs words set Aesonâs paranoid instincts at ease.
âOkay.â Aeson decides not to fight Alistair on this. Theyâve been a jerk for long enough. âWhat do you want to do?â
If Aeson thought Alistair was a giddy child before, theyâre floored by how he looks now.
Alistair jumps off the couch and pulls Aeson to their feet. He drags them through their apartment, a destination already in mind.
Alistair stops in front of Aesonâs studio.
âPlease, show me how you work.â Alistair doesnât let go of Aesonâs hands. In fact, he squeezes, urging Aeson to say yes.
They do and consequently spend the rest of the day indulging Alistair and his requests.
This is a Standalone short of one of the ways I think my Aces could've confessed to each other. It's long and the ending's kinda rushed, but here. Refer here for more info about my Aces
For almost a whole month, Ace has been acting weird. All flighty and avoidant every time Aec goes near him. Aec couldnât even bring it up over text because their messages were being ignored too. They havenât had a decent conversation at all and Aec canât figure out what it was they couldâve done to upset Ace, much less apologize for it.
Aec quickly grew fed up with their best friend. After numerous attempts to corner Ace and talk and numerous unread messages, Aec decided to take a page out of Aceâs book and ignore him in return. That lasted about two days before Aec gave up.
Theyâre on their last resort now, using their mutual friendsâwhom Ace has not been avoidingâto figure out whatâs up with Ace.
So, Sylvie set up a time to hang out with Ace at his place, where they could easily keep Ace from running away upon seeing Aec.
Hiding in Sylvieâs kitchen, Aec isnât nervous about Aceâs arrival. No, anything but. Theyâre angrily anticipating it. Theyâre frustrated too, but mostly theyâre hurt. Ace suddenly avoiding them like Aec is the plague like this, it hurts a lot more than theyâd care to admit.
Silas, enlisted as well, is stationed in the hallway, blocking access to the washroom and any other lockable space. Sylvieâs stationed in the living room, trying to act like everythingâs fine and normal for when the guest of honour arrives. He pulls out his phone and checks the time. âTen minutes,â Sylvie calls.
Ten minutes doesnât sound like a long time but Aec can;t think of an instance where time moved any slower than it is right now. In just ten measly minutes Ace will arrive and they can finally put an end to this ridiculous farce between the two of them. Just the thought of it has Aecâs hands shaking in anticipation. They want this to be over already and have their best friend back.
âHeâs here,â Sylvie informs only seven minutes later instead of ten. It's routine for Ace to overestimate his time of arrival to give himself some wiggle room without stressing about being late.
A hush falls over the apartment as the sound of footsteps grows closer to the door. Then a quick knock. What was once excitement turns into anxious trepidation as Aecâs heart seizes to the sound of Sylvie opening the door. They thought they were ready, that they could handle this, but hearing Ace's casual, jovial greeting towards Sylvie has Aecâs throat closing up and their stomach twisting up in envious, painful knots.
What changes tha Ace could no longer talk to Aec like that?
âIâm glad you could make it, itâs been a while since we last hung out like this.â Sylvie smoothly leads Ace over to the couch. They sit and get comfortable. Sylvie has to ease Ace in first before giving the signal for Aec to come out and for Silas to actively block the hallway.
âYeah, sorry âbout that,â Ace says lightly, not wanting to drag on the topic more.
âBut youâre here now! So, letâs chat.â Sylvie claps his hands. âIâve been wondering something.â
This is it.
âWhat about?â Ace inquires naively. The curious, almost pure tone of Aceâs voice has Aecâs heart squeezing with the accompanying thought of heâs too cute.
âWell, Aec, really. Whatâs going on between you two?â Sylvie crashes right through the gate boldy. Ace doesnât say anything right away and Aec can just imagine him hiding his face, twiddling his fingers in his lap while he tries to find the right words.
âItâs . . . itâs nothing.â
Theyâre disappointing if not expected words. Of course Ace isnât going to disclose such sensitive information right away, even if he trusts Sylvie.
âYouâre sure?â Sylvie prompts gently. The signal is on the tip of his tongue. Aec crouches on the tiled floor, readying themself to act.
Ace takes a deep breath, preparing himself. âActually,â Aecâs nerves are tingling, their heart picking up the pace at the promise of a dramatic reveal.
âYeah?â Sylvie urges once more.
âIâve been avoiding them lately.â Ace finishes with a relieved sigh like heâd just let the biggest weight off of his chest.
All the build-up in Aec crashes to a disappointed halt.
âWhy?â Sylvie feigns shock.
âItâs hard to explain,â Ace confesses. Itâs not much but itâs more than what Aec knew before at the very least.
âMaybe you should try explaining anyway.â Aec isnât sure if thatâs the signal, in fact, theyâre almost positive it isnât but they find they donât care, they move anyway, speaking up as they go.
âYeah, maybe you should, so I can fucking understand.â
Immediately Ace is on his feet at the sound of Aecâs pissed-off voice and the sight of their equally pissed expression.
âAec! Whatâwhat are youâwhy are youâhow long have you been here?â
Sylvie heads for the door, locking it before Ace has the thought to leave. Silas almost comes into view, making himself as big and intimidating as he can to completely block the hallway. He doesnât say anything and Ace canât see him from where heâs standing.
Aec crosses their arms, growing generously. âHow long do you think?â Itâs a rhetorical question with a heaping helping of sarcasm.
When realization dawns on Ace, he looks accusingly at Sylvie, wordlessly asking if he planned this with them. Sylvie nods resignedly, leaning further back on the door.
âSo? Why have you been ignoring me?â Aec doesnât let the conversation drag on or veer off-topic.
Ace doesnât say anything, too shell-shocked to speak.
This only further aggravates Aecâs nerves. âSeriously?â Nothing to say? God, what the fuck is going on with you?â Aec lets their voice rise with the frustration and hurt bubbling over inside them. They donât miss how Ace flinches slightly at the volume, his shoulders tensing up. He looks guilty now, staring at the floor with a forlorn gaze.
When Ace shows he has nothing to say for himself and his actions, Aec prepares to shout once more but Sylvie recognizes the signal before Aec can follow through.
âAec,â he says calmly, if not paternally, âI know youâre upset and you have every right to be, but yelling at Ace wonât help. Itâs not constructive.â In an instant, Aec feels hot with shame, their desire to shout curses at Ace now feeling like a capital offence. They back down like a properly scolded beast that was on the verge of attack.
Sylvie, satisfied with the reaction, is glad he had the sense to quell Aecâs attack before it could start and do any lasting damage.
He focuses on Ace from the door with a sympathetic look. âNow then,â Sylvie addresses Ace gently, still sounding paternal. Sylvie is the âmom friendâ of the group, though âdad friendâ might be more accurate. He usually shares the paternal roles with Ace, who could be considered the âmom friendâ, but with Aceâs absence, Sylvieâs taken up both roles. âIs there anything you want to tell Aec? Itâs clear theyâre hurting right now.â Sylvie directs Ace like a teacher dealing with a silly dispute between grade-schoolers. Itâs condescending but needed.
Ace knots his hands together anxiously, unable to look up. He nods, itâs a promise to talk. Sylvie smiles encouragingly even though Ace isnât looking.
It takes time but Ace finally lifts his head and looks at Aec sorrowfully. âIâm sorry . . .â he whispers.
An apology isnât what Aec wants though. They want
an explanation, to know what happened, what they did.
Aec grits their teeth, a glare forming. âOkay,â they spit carefully, âyouâre sorry, great. But I need more than that. You just suddenly disappeared.â Aec keeps their voice level but doesnât hide their anger.
Ace doesnât flinch like before, instead, his eyes start to water and his lip quivers. Normally, seeing Ace about to cry would immediately have Aec trying to comfort him but in this instance, Aec wants Ace to cry, to suffer because he should for all the grief heâs caused them.
Ace quickly starts nodding, swiftly wiping his eyes before any tears spill. âYouâre rightâyouâre riâright. IâmâIâm sorry . . . IâI . . .â Aceâs stuttering words filled with remorse twinge at Aecâs heart, having them almost falter in their anger. Seeing how much this was also affecting Ace is eye-opening for Aec. They havenât had a clue about how Ace was feeling about avoiding them.
Ace tries to calm himself with simple breathing exercises and Aec patiently lets him, despite wanting answers immediately.
It takes a few minutes before Ace looks composed enough to continue his thoughts, but he gets there all the same.
He keeps his gaze low, still fidgeting with his hands. He finally opens his mouth to speak and Aec waits with bated breath, raw emotion bubbling under their skin.
âRemember the last time we were together?â Aec nods, unable to figure out where Ace is going with this. The last time the two of them were together, it was a completely normal if not boring hangout. No lasting incident sticks out of Aecâs memory.
The two of them had gone to see a movie and lunch. The movie was enjoyable, no masterpiece, but good. Theyâd gone to a small cafe for lunch. And ate pastries if Aec is remembering right. What happened that forced Ace to run away from them?
âRemember how the cafe had a discreet little pride sticker?â Aec could vaguely picture it. They nod hesitantly, a sign for Ace to continue. âAnd how as we're were leaving, a few guys walked in talking about it, making homophobic comments and jokes?â
This is news to Aec. Did that really happen? They donât recall hearing anything like that. Truthfully though, Aec will admit they donât notice the people around them when Ace is by their side. This is because no one matters more to Aec than their best friend, the unrequited love of their life for almost twelve years.
Aec shakes their head, making their confusion on how thatâs related to Ace avoiding them known. âNo, I donât remember that part, but why would some assholes being assholes make you run away from me?â Aec asks bluntly but with less fury in their voice than before.
Ace pulls a dry smile like heâs disappointed but not surprised that Aec hasnât figured it out yet.
He finally lifts his head and looks at Sylvie. âIâm not going to run away, so can I talk to them alone?â he asks hopefully like itâs up to Sylvie to decide if heâs allowed privacy or not.
Sylvie smiles and pushes himself off the door and walks past Ace with a soft pat on the shoulder. âOf course,â He disappears down the hallway, taking Silas with him, someone Ace hadnât noticed was here.
With Sylvie and Silas gone, everything suddenly feels so much more intense. Whatever it is Ace can only say to Aec alone it must be big because they both trust their friends almost as much as they trust each other.
âSo,â Aec says, âspit it out. Whatâs going on with you?â They step into the living room, wanting to be closer to Ace. They havenât gotten this close to him for far too long. They find theyâre not sure if they want to kiss Ace or hit him. Itâs conflicting because on the one hand heâs severely hurt them and theyâre rightfully furious, but on the other hand, Aec still loves Ace and theyâve missed their best friend beyond belief and to be in arms reach again is agonizing.
Ace doesnât move despite Aecâs advance. Thatâs a good sign. He continues to fidget with his hands, staring at his shoes. Ace doesnât answer the question right away, even though it looks like heâd been ready before when he asked Sylvie to leave. Instead, he chews on his lower lip and cheek restlessly.
Aec doesnât know what compels them, but they find they donât fight the urge to let loose their deepest thoughts.
âAlistair,â Aec says almost desperately. Ace stiffens at the full name treatment but doesnât talk. âI donât know whatâs going on with you. Youâre not talking to me at all. How can I help orâor fix anything if I donât know what I did? What did I do?â They step even closer, every intention to make contact.
Ace doesnât move away at the threat of Aec touching him, he almost leans into it, which has Aecâs heart squeezing. Aec reaches out and places their hand on the side of Aceâs shoulder, the other reaching down and grabbing one of Aceâs hands, halting the fidgeting. Aecâs hand on Aceâs shoulder travels to Aceâs jaw, ducking their own head and finally catching Aceâs gaze.
âPlease,â they choke, hand squeezing Aceâs tightly, âjust talk to me.â
Aecâs voice wavers. Theyâre not someone who cries but right now their voice betrays them. And so is their heart.
â. . . I love you.â
What?
Ace closes his eyes, starting to cry. Softly at first, but cries harder and harder with each second. He becomes incoherent, no longer talking, just sobbing Aec can only pull him into their arms, cradling his head in their shoulder, the other hand placed firmly on his back.
Aec tries to decide what Ace could possibly mean by I love you and why it would tear Ace up to say it, why heâs crying so hard just saying it.
They donât ask for elaboration, not with Ace crying so hard. Aec merely holds Ace and waits for him to calm down and if they started humming softly the tune of a cherished childhood lullaby, well thereâs no need to comment.
Aec isnât sure how long the two of them stood in Sylvieâs living room, Ace crying while they comfort him in their quiet way, but eventually, Ace calms down enough that Aec thinks they can finally continue talking. Aec leads the both of them over to the couch and sits Ace down before joining him. Ace is quickly wiping his eyes and nose ineffectively.
âIâm sorry,â Ace whispers in a shaky voice.
âWhat are you apologizing for now?â Aec asks, trying not to sound too rude. Itâs an effort on their part.
|Ace shakes his head, wiping his nose with the back of his once more, sniffling quietly. âFor . . . for justâfor everything . . . everything Iâve put you through lately.â Aec frowns, tilting their head.
âYouâve already apologized for that. Stop,â they chastise Ace gently. Ace nods, wiping his eyes again as they continue to water.
Aec reaches boldly for Aceâs free hand and grasps it tightly. Holding Aceâs hand like this is euphoric and Aec can feel all the fury in them just melting completely away, replaced with concern and joy at being so close to Ace again after so long apart. Aec catches gaze once more and holds it.
âIf youâre apologizing for everything, then are you also apologizing for saying you love me?â They donât know where the courage to ask so clearly came from but Aec is grateful for it all the same.
Ace shakes his head yes quickly, effectively shattering Aecâs heart with each shake.
âWhy?â Aec asks, their voice dropping to a whisper, threading to break as they feel their throat close up.
âBecause itâs wrong! Iâm wrong! I shouldnât feel this way.â Ace doesnât shout but the intensity of his tone speaks volumes.
Aec can feel themself getting swept up in the newfound intensity.
âWhy? Why shouldn't you? Why is it wrong?â Aec demands, feeling themself grow angrier and angrier. Theyâve essentially been insulted by the most important person in their life. Why is it wrong of Ace to love them?
Ace vigorously shakes his head, disagreeing despite nothing having been said to disagree with.
Aec wants to scream, but they restrain themself, restricting themself to only talk in a
levelled tone. Shouting wonât help after all.
âIâm supposed to like girls! Only girls! I canâtâI canât beâI canât be feeling this way about you. I just canât.â Aceâs head falls into his hands, losing Aecâs grip.
âThatâs absolutely fucking ridiculous,â Aec deadpans, the intensely growing anger dying down to a simmer. Ace doesnât react. So, Aec continues. âSo What! So what if you donât like girls? So what if you love me instead! Thereâs absolutely nothing wrong with you. Just look at me. If thereâs something wrong with you, well then, Iâm fucked.â Aec gives a sarcastic laugh, a mirthless smile.
Ace stays still, still not reacting. Heâs always been aware of Aecâs lack of cishet-ness. Theyâve been out about their identity since they were old enough to comprehend as much.
Aec almost sighs in defeat at the clear sign of their words having no effect.
âAlistair.â Itâs the second time in such a short period that Aec has used Aceâs real name. Itâs a testament to how serious Aec is right now. Ace finally lifts his head and stares with glossy, red-rimmed doe eyes, the very same that Aec fell impossibly in love with. âI love you.â
Aceâs eyes somehow grow even wider and Aec canât help the little smile on their face. They reach and cup Aceâs jaw once again. A gentle caress of their thumb along his skin. Aec doesnât move in to kiss Ace, the blatant internalized homophobia telling them Ace isnât ready for something like that no matter how much they may want to gently kiss his pain away.
âAnd it breaks my heart to see you like this.â Aec drops their head, eyeing Aceâs hands in his lap, smiling in disbelief at what they just said, shocked at their capability to say such vulnerable words without fucking up. âTo see you so upset, hating yourself for how you feel, you whom I love so much.â Aec doesnât know where the confidence comes from, to continue being so sappy and vulnerable. Theyâd never talk like this with anyone other than Ace. To hear Aec like this is a privilege only Ace has.
Ace takes a deep, wavering breath and to Aecâs surprise, grabs their hand with his, squeezing tightly. âI donât know what to do,â he whispers. Itâs a clear cry for help that Aec vows to answer. They return the gesture, squeezing Aceâs hand before lifting their head. Aec tries to smile as big as they can. Itâs not very wide, but their eyes say all thatâs needed.
âItâs okay. Iâm here. Iâll always be here for you.â Aec leans in like they always do to comfort Ace, and gingerly kisses Aceâs forehead. Their lips linger just a second past pure comfort Ace and towards selfish desire on Aecâs part. They pull away when they gather their senses.
They hold Aceâs gaze, conveying how serious they are with just a look, wanting Ace to know they mean every word.
To Aecâs surprise again, Ace breaks into a quick sob, pushing his head down onto Aecâs shoulder.
âWhatâs wrong?â They ask, bewildered now by Aceâs tears. Why would Aec comforting him like they always do make Ace cry again?
The sobs turn into wet laughs, confusing Aec even further. âJust. Why are you so great? How can Iâhow can I not love you when youâre like this?â Oh.
Aec canât help the little smirk on their lips, the tensing from their shoulders relaxing. They pat Aceâs shoulder affectionately. âJeez, you had me worried there.â Aec pulls Aceâs head away from their shoulder to look at him. Ace is laughing as heâs drying his eyes. To finally hear Ace's laugh is like finding an oasis in a desert and finally quenching an aching thirst with them. Aec just can't get enough of the melodic sound.
As the moment passes and Ace quiets down, a tranquil silence falls over the two of them. They gaze into each otherâs eyes in a very cheesy fashion. Now as much as Aec loves to stare at Aceâs face, they still have a few questions that need answering before they are satisfied.
Aec sighs, breaking the moment, tilting their head to the side. âI still have a few questions,â they say, adopting their normal tone finally. Their naturally quiet, cold sort of tone of voice, even when they mean otherwise. Aec has to manually alter their tone to be more warm and approachable, even more so than most people would think, and theyâve been doing so since they said they love Ace.
Ace immediately stiffens, his back straightening, shoulders rising. He nods as confidently as he can. âOkay,â Ace manages apprehensively.
âWere you avoiding me because you were in denial?â Was running away from me your way of running away from yourself and your feelings?â It seems obvious as Aec asks, but they need absolute clarity from Ace anyway. He nods and thatâs enough for them. âHow long have you actually been feeling like this?â
Itâs not an important, necessary question, rather itâs a pretty invasive, probing question on Aecâs part. The thought of retracting their words comes too late and Ace is answering before Aec can say he doesnât have to.
Ace adverts his eyes to the floor, turning his head away. âA few months now, I think. Itâit didnât really sink in at first.â He chuckles wryly. âIn fact, I was building the guts to talk to you about it. I was finally reaching a point where I thought maybe it was okay to feel like this but almost immediately after, I was reminded of the reason why I was struggling so much and why itâs wrong and I just couldn't handle it.â Ace flicks his eyes over to Aec warily, shamefully. âOr you.â
Aec nods stonfeully. All the questions they had harboured all this time have finally been answered, some without them even asking outright. They thought once they knew why Ace was avoiding them, theyâd feel better, but now that theyâre here, Aec doesnât feel as good as they thought they would.
Maybe itâs because theyâve essentially been rejected? Ace did reject them right?
âWhere does this leave us then?â Aec asks, hiding the uncertainty and anxiety theyâre feeling. Aceâs answer will make or break their relationship after all and from where Aec is standing, the odds arenât in their favour.
Ace fidgets, chewing his lip almost viciously. His eyes dart around the room frantically
like his brain is racing for an answer and the room will give it to him somehow. âWell,â he starts hesitantly, drawing Aec to the edge of their seat. They lean into the suspense. âIâI didnâtâI donât knowâI mean, uh, whâwhere do you want uâus toâto be?â Ace quickly puts the responsibility on Aec, something not uncommon between the two of them in times like this.
Aec pulls a frown with little hostility, making a face of really? before shaking their head. âWell if it were up to me,â Aec starts smoothly, âIâd want us to stay together. Friends or more. I love you too much to be apart from you.â Theyâre honest with their thoughts, cool as a cucumber on the surface despite their pulse racing in their ears and their stomach twisting into tight knots.
Aecâs bold words have Ace very embarrassed, hiding his face in his hands. Aec canât help but revel in the sight. Ace starts whining behind his cover and Aec notices that even the tops of his ears are flushed pink. Such a sight has Aec nearly swooning.
Ace finally pulls his hands away when Aec pets his head gently. âItâs okay,â they say softly, making an effort to sound affectionate. Ace nods quickly like a small child agreeing with an adult without restraint, his chin quivering as his lips pull into a pout. Aec gratefully takes in the details of Aceâs red, pouting face, finding him absolutely adorable.
âAs much as I want to be with you, I wonât force my feelings on you if they make you uncomfortable. I donât want to be with you if it makes you unhappy.â Theyâre big words and as Aec says them, they become acutely away that theyâre not sure they have the conviction to stick to their word.
Aceâs eyes grow impossibly wide, jaw going slack. He looks like he canât believe what Aec is saying.
âWaitâstop,â Ace says in a quiet wail. Aec does and shoots Ace a look of what? Ace starts shaking his head fervently. âI donât want that,â he says as confidently as he can. Aec senses heâs not done, so they donât ask for elaboration, they just wait patiently.
âAeson,â Aec startles Aec this time using their full name, causing a spike in their pulse. Ace grabs their hands in his. âI want to be with you. You make me happy and it killed me to be away from you, to not talk to you. I thought I was doing the right thing avoiding you, but I was wrong.â
The sincerity in Aceâs words, the urgency in his eyes, the way heâs gripping their hands so tightly his skin is white, all of it has Aec wanting to cry in relief and utter joy. They could only nod, fearing if they spoke their voice would break.
Seeing Aecâs reaction, Ace lets out the biggest sigh of relief. His whole torso sags forward, his forehead landing squarely on Aecâs stable shoulder. Ace laughs, a small laugh, sarcastic. âWhy are we like this?â
Aec shrugs under Ace, causing him to laugh once more. âIâm such an idiot. I shouldâve just talked to you. Wouldâa saved us so much angst.â
Aec canât agree more. They reach up and pat Aceâs head, two distinct pats, then leaves their hand resting on the crown of his head softly.
Such a gesture has Ace moving even closer to Aec, burrowing his face deeper into their shoulder.
Theyâre both quiet for a second, reality sinking. Finally. Theyâve reached an understanding and theyâre together again. And Ae will be damned if they let that change any time soon.

âYou canât be serious,â Ace groaned as he gazed begrudgingly at the bed, more specifically, at the knee-length renaissance dress laid neatly across it. Behind him, Aec chuckled darkly.
âOh, Iâm serious.â They stepped to Aceâs side, joining him in staring at the dress presented.
The dress looks okay if not a bit ugly. The colours are purple, blue and salmon, not a good mix.
âNo, Iâll look so foolish. Iâll stand out too,â Ace complained, turning to Aec with an anguished expression.
Aec merely bent down and grabbed the dress by the hanger and turned to Ace. They held the garment up to Ace and evaluated how well itâll fit him while Ace made noises of protest.
âOh, hush, love,â they chided their whining boyfriend before setting the dress back down, now leaving it crumpled and folded on the bed. âYou know you have to wear this and thereâs no getting out of it.â
Ace conceded with a slump of his shoulders and sat on the bed with a heavy plop. He dipped into the mattress before bouncing lightly.
Aec shook their head at how Ace was acting. It was his own fault that he had to wear a dress. He messed up and ate Aecâs cake and to make it up to Aec, Ace pledged that he would do anything (within reason) that Aec asked of him. So, they are asking him to wear a dress to their next date and Ace canât say no. Ace lied down on the bed and spread his arms out. He heaved a heavy sigh as Aec moved around the bed to the door.
âYou just stay here and pout then, Iâm going to go and watch TV.â It was a harsh farewell, something normal for Aec. It didnât help that they were unimpressed with their boyfriendâs attitude though.
Ace lifted his head and watched as Aec walked out briskly with their hands in their hoodie pocket. As soon as they were gone, Ace felt cold, all alone in the bedroom. He rolled his head to the side and glared at the dress beside him. He resented the clothing with all he could. It was ugly and embarrassing and he was going to look so stupid on their date. People were going to laugh and stare at him, maybe even take pictures when heâs not looking.
âGod, why are they such an evil jerk sometimes?â Ace pondered to himself about his enbyfriend.
Ace hauled himself up on the bed and got to his feet. There was no pleading with Aec, the dress was happening, but Ace was still going to give them a piece of his mind, or at least get an explanation as to why this was the price for the cake. Or something. Some sort of emotional closure.
Ace left the bedroom in a huff and stomped into the living room where he heard the TV on, playing whatever episode of Bleach Aec was watching.
âLove! Weâre not done talking about this!â Ace announced with a shout. The TV paused. Ace stomped in front of it and faced Aec, who was lounging in their seat on the couch.
They were slouched back into the cushions with their hand resting on their stomach lazily, the other putting the remote down before going to their stomach.
âYes, we are. Youâre wearing that and weâre going to go and eat dinner and have a walk through the park, then weâre coming home, end of discussion. If you didnât want this, you shouldnât have eaten my cake and then tried to hide it from me.â The icy tone to their voice made Ace shiver and want to step down from his position and just accept everything, but he couldnât. He couldnât just let Aec embarrass them like this in public for something so trivial like a slice of cake being eaten.
Though, Ace knew that even though it was trivial to him, it wasnât to Aec.
That was the thing with Aec, they were mature, yes, but even mature people have their childish moments, and for Aec, this was that. They couldnât just forgive and forget like people expect them to. They held grudges and got even with people, it wasnât a nice trait for Aec, but they didnât try to work on it.
Ace clenched his hands into tight fists and stuck them in his pockets and held his ground.
âLove, I apologized and I said I would get you some cake to make up for it. You donât need to publicly humiliate me like this because youâre mad at me. Why are you doing this?â Ace stepped toward Aec with a pleading expression.
Even with how well these two knew each other, it wasnât like they could read each otherâs minds. Sometimes, what Aec did made no sense to Ace.
Aec let out an annoyed sigh and pushed themself forward, no longer reclining into the couch.
âI donât like it when you lie to me, it bothers me and I hate it when you eat my desserts without asking, and I want to make sure youâve learned your lesson. So, Iâve gotten you a dress, something I know you despise wearing, and I want you to wear it for me,â they said with a low, commanding tone, so sure of what they were saying.
The large, cat-fur covered black hoodie, messy long hair in a low ponytail, and sweats riding up unevenly on their legs gave such a different effect in comparison to their voice, their hard-set gaze and harsh posture all just screaming power and confidence. Aec attracted Ace and made him fall for them every time he saw them like this, so sure of themself and confident and uncaring of their shabby appearance because they knew how amazing they always looked.
Ace had to take a deep breath, locked in place by Aecâs harsh gaze. He forgot his train of thought, he forgot what he was going to say to convince Aec not to make him do this.
Aec could see their boyfriend had lost what he was going to say, they let out a sigh before standing up with lazy effort.
âHow about this, because I do still want to enjoy our evening together and donât want to hear you complaining for the entirety of it, we donât have to go for a walk after dinner. We can eat then go home, and to make it better, weâll drive, we wonât take transit. Okay? Because I am not letting you out of this, but I donât want you to hate me by the end of it and if anyone says anything, you know Iâll deal with them.â
The compromise was not at all what Ace had in mind, though he couldnât quite remember what it was he did have in mind. The gentleness in Aecâs voice just made him swoon, made him accept everything the other had said without a second thought and he found himself nodding along like a fool.
Aec stepped forward, reaching out a hand and caressing Aceâs jaw before moving to tousle Aceâs spiky, messy hair affectionately.
Aec was a full head taller than Ace and the height difference always smacked Ace in the face whenever they stood so close to each other like this and he had to look up to see his enbyfriend.
Ace lifted his head and saw that Aec was smiling fondly down at him. It made his heart jump and he felt heat in his face, suddenly feeling small in Aecâs presence.
He looked away quickly, now sporting a very childish pout to his lips. âWhy are you smiling like that?â he asked in a mutter, not really asking Aec why they were smiling so fondly at him when the two of them were supposed to be mad at each other.
Aec didnât reply right away, instead, they just stared at Ace before they leaned back and shrugged casually. âYouâre just adorable. Especially when youâre mad.â
How dare they? Ace frowned even more, though it had no real malice. He stuck his hands in his pockets to keep from crossing his arms like a child.
âOh, shut up,â Ace said before he stepped away, going and sitting on the chair with his arms now crossed and out of his pocket. âYour complimenting privileges have been revoked. Youâre not allowed to call me cute until I say you can,â Ace told his enbyfriend quite childishly.
He was a lot more expressive in his lack of maturity than Aec but it wasnât like he was like this all the time, just when he was mad but it wasnât the explosive sort of anger an adult experiences, more petty anger that makes you want to cross your arms and ignore everyone until youâve let go whatever pissed you off.
Aec laughed a gentle, bemused chuckle at their boyfriend, âwhatever you say, Love.â They moved and sat back on the couch where they had previously sat. Aec unpaused the TV and Bleach began to play.
Ace didnât want to watch it, didnât want to act like everything was fine between the two of them, so he pulled out his phone and began to play on that instead, ignoring both the anime and person next to him as best as he could.
Due to messing around on his phone, Ace periodically kept on checking the time. Their reservation for dinner was in two hours and Ace was positive it would take him a good long time to get ready because he had to do makeup and stuff to look less like a drag queen and more like a regular queen. If he can hide that heâs actually a guy in a dress, then there will be fewer whispers, fewer stares, and fewer opportunities for a bad time.
âWe should start getting ready. Iâll need help with my hair and makeup.â Ace didnât sound enthused at all, getting up from the chair with apathetic movements.
He didnât wait for Aec to get up and walked back into the bedroom where he found the dress laid on the bed still crumpled like how Aec had left it.
He frowned at the thing before he sat down on the bed as far away from the dress as possible, which wasnât very far.
Ace knew nothing of makeup or how to put a dress on properly and was going to need Aecâs help because they knew a lot about both ends of the spectrum for clothes and makeup.
A moment later, Aec was entering the bedroom with a confident but lazy saunter. |
âHave you showered yet?â Aec asked as they moved over to the dresser where on top was a makeup box that Ace never really paid attention to.
âNo.â
âThen go shower.â
âOkay, okay, Iâm going,â Ace got up from the bed in a hurry and walked over to the joint bathroom.
It was nice that they were able to find a place that had two washrooms, one in the main bedroom and one in the hall and it was even nicer that both had a tub and showerhead. Though Ace figured even if there was only one shower, the two of them wouldâve made due either taking turns showering or showering together.
After a quick, cleansing shower, Ace stepped out and walked back into the bedroom with a towel around his waist.
Inside, Aec was sitting on the bed with their makeup box seated beside them, open with various things spewed about the bed. âGood, youâre clean. Are you dry?â Aec distractedly addressed Ace while they messed around with some makeup brushes.
Ace stalled for a moment. âUh, do I have to be dry?â he asked, clutching the towel at his waist hesitantly.
Aec lifted their gaze to their boyfriend and gave him a very unimpressed look. âYes,â they said like it was obvious, though, in retrospect, it was.
Ace nodded and turned back to the bathroom, going back in and grabbing a clean towel. He dried off his face first, figuring most of the makeup would be going there. Then, he did the rest of his body. His hair would have to be blow-dried through.
Ace dropped the towel on the ground, deciding he would deal with it later, and readjusted the damp towel around his waist before he reemerged back into the bedroom for a second time.
âAlright, Iâve done the best I could,â he announced, âwhat do I do next?â
âNow, you put something on, please. Then, get over here, Iâm going to dry your hair so it doesnât get in the way.â
While Ace moved to the dresser, Aec got up from the bed and walked into the bathroom and there was a thump before Aec was back with the hairdryer in their hands.
Ace threw on some boxers before he watched Aec to see where they were going. Aec went and plugged the hair dryer into the power bar on the floor by the right side of the bed. They sat down on the bed and beckoned Ace over.
âIâll dry your hair for you.â It wasnât an offer, it was an order for him to get over there and sit down and stay still. Which, Ace followed promptly, hurrying to Aec and sitting down on the floor between their legs.
It wasnât routine for Aec to blow dry Aceâs hair like this, but theyâve done it enough that it just worked best when Ace sat on the floor like this.
âHere I go.â The air was brisk at first, startling Ace for a moment. His wet bangs were being blown right into his face and round and it was annoying having his hair in his eyes but he knew there was nothing he could do except resign himself to his fate. This would only take a few minutes, then he was bound for something worse, makeup.
â
âGod, I hate this, I hate all of this.â Ace resisted the urge to punch his reflection in the mirror opposite of him hanging unsuspectingly on the wall.
âI think you look beautiful,â Aecâs condescending voice was grating to Aceâs ears. He didnât want to hear it.
Ace turned his head to the doorway and was shocked by what he saw.
There, in plain sight, was Aec in a tux.
Their hair in a low but neat ponytail, bangs cascading down the left of their face like usual. There was no bowtie around Aecâs neck, instead, the top two buttons were undone, giving the slightest hint to pale skin. There was no vest, just the shirt and a two-button jacket, which was done up neatly.
The whole thing hugged Aecâs body in a flatteringly androgynous way.
Ace mustâve been staring too hard because Aec rolled their eyes before stepping closer.
âStop gawking, you look stupid,â came Aecâs harsh statement while they focused in the mirror, ruffling their bangs accordingly.
Ace blinked, jumpstarting his brain to give a retort, but nothing came to mind. âWell . . . you â you look . . . you look . . .â Aceâs words were jumbled and slow. He swallowed thickly and frowned. âYouâre not allowed to go out looking like that, not while I look like this.â
It was not fair at all for Aec to go out tonight looking absolutely dashingly while he looked so humiliating.
âDonât be ridiculous. You look fine. The makeup is helping, trust me. And remember, I promised you if anyone says or does anything, Iâll handle them.â
They were really doing this. They were really going to go on a date looking like this.
Ace threw himself another glance in the mirror, taking in the added details to his appearance.
His skin was âclearâ though it was just foundation and other makeup stuff that Ace didn't know the names of. His lips were a glossy and flattering shade of pink, bringing out the natural plumpness of his bottom lip. His eyes were painted in muted eye shadows, going with the entire colour scheme of his pink, purple, and blue appearance.
Aec had somehow softened his jawline and cheekbones, giving him a more feminine look to his already soft face. He did look a lot better than before.
Ace heaved a heavy sigh before nodding, tearing his gaze away from the mirror. âFine, youâre right. Letâs just get this over with before weâre late.â
He walked out of the bedroom and over to the front door.
Slipping on his black high top converse, Ace was distracted by the reminder that he was wearing skin-tone stockings. He only agreed to wear them because he refused to shave his legs and didnât want to wear such a short dress with hairy legs.
The stockings felt weird, especially the sock part. Ace was grumbling about them immediately.
Aec was by his side in seconds, putting on identical but bigger shoes. âDo you have everything?â they asked.
It was a stupid question, only succeeding in making Ace glare at his partner.
âI. Have. No. Pockets.â
Aec nodded immediately, understanding Aceâs predicament. âRight. Do you want a little bag to carry your things?â
âDonât you mean purse? And no, I do not. The dress is bad enough. I do not want to carry around a clutch bag all evening on top of it. Can you just carry my phone and wallet and Iâll leave my keys here?â It seemed like the least Aec could do for him was to carry his things for him.
Aec hummed softly before they nodded. âSure thing, Love.â
Ace quickly rushed through the apartment with his shoes on and ran back to the bedroom, grabbing his discarded phone from the bed and swiped his wallet from the dresser before he ran back.
The handoff was quick and soon enough, Aec had two phones and two wallets and one set of keys in their large pockets with some room to spare. It felt awkward.
It was truly unfair that most feminine clothing did not have functional pockets like menâs clothing usually did, Ace thought bitterly.
The couple grabbed their respective motorcycle helmets from the coat rack. Both had slick, black helmets that covered their entire heads and faces completely. The only difference was Aecâs had a subtle, small white stripe along the bottom to tell the difference without having to put their names on the helmets.
Aec opened the door and let Ace walk out first before following. They swiftly locked the door and the two of them headed down the hallway to the elevator.
Each step grew heavier than the last and Ace wasnât sure he would be able to handle the ride down the lift without throwing up.
Inside the safety of the apartment, the reality of going in public like this was daunting but almost surreal, but now that he was outside, the reality set in painfully and immediately Ace was on edge, his stomach twisting in aching knots.
Was tonight really going to be fine like Aec said?
As soon as they were ten steps away from their door, Ace reached out and clutched Aecâs hand tightly.
âAeson, I â I donât know if I can do this.â
Ace was surprised with himself. He didnât mean for his voice to sound so pleading and desperate, though it was accurate to how he was feeling.
Aec stopped, squeezing Aceâs hand tightly. âYou can do this and if you really canât, then weâll go home.â That was also surprising. All afternoon, Aec made it sound like they werenât budging on their position in this.
The soothing confidence that Aec carried with each word did well to settle a few of Aceâs nerves. He wasnât surprised that Aec would be so comforting, they were naturally like this when pushing Ace out of his comfort zone. For a moment, this didnât feel like a punishment anymore, the revenge forgotten just for a moment and it was just the two of them going on a date in clothes they donât normally wear.
Ace took a few deep breaths before nodding hasty and resumed the treacherous walk to the elevator.
The elevator ride itself was proven easier than Ace anticipated.
Fortunately, there wasnât anyone in the elevator and the ride itself was smooth so it didnât trigger Aceâs motion sickness. He still felt sick with nerves though.
The walk through the underground parkade was also easier than Ace thought it would be. It mustâve been either before the dinner rush hour or just after, because there was no one in sight, no families either leaving or coming home from a nice dinner, nothing.
The two reached Aecâs motorcycle without conflict and they were seated and ready to go in record time.
âHolding on tight, Love?â Aec asked, looking over their shoulder with the visor on their helmet lifted to see Ace.
Ace, his black visor down and covering his face, nodded. His arms were wrapped around Aecâs waist tightly, his hands entwined and resting on Aecâs abdomen.
âGood,â Aec flicked down their visor and started the vehicle before pulling out of the parkade skillfully.

The day had been long and stressful on all of them, even Ace, the cleric who knew powerful and effective healing spells. Exhausted, the party of four trudged out of the dungeon with slow, weary steps, their bodies sagged forward, arms hanging at their sides limply. Everyone was groaning but not saying much of anything. The verbal expression of their fatigue was enough to satisfy them that no one wasted even more energy by using actual words. It was clear what they were conveying: I am tired, let me die, please.
Silasâ armour weighed him down even more than anyone else in the party, making each step harder than the last.
The party walked along the dirt path leading back to the nearest town, heads hung low. They looked like a pack of zombies with their groaning and moaning accompanying their trudging stride.
After an hour of walking down the mountain, the party came across a farmer and his horse-drawn wagon full of wheat.
They were able to hitch a ride back to town, making the journey significantly easier for the party despite the bumpy road they traversed along only aiding the aches in everyoneâs bones along the way.
No one spoke. All four tired adventurers merely slumped against each other onto the large haystack behind them, closing their eyes and trying to fall into some much needed sleep before the ride was over and they would have to go back to walking until they found an inn to stay at.
When the farmer reached the town, he leashed his horses to a nearby post and walked to the back of the wagon to see how his passengers were doing. The party was fast asleep.
âHey there, kids! Weâre here.â The farmer slapped the side of the wagon, waking the party up with a violent jolt. Sylvie and Ace looked around blearily while Silas and Aec stretched their arms. They all hopped off yawning and groaning.
Sylvie faced the farmer. With a grateful smile, he stretched his arms, âthank you, sir, for the ride. What do we owe you?â
The farmer chuckled, ânothing, my dear boy. Itâs thanks to young adventurers like you four that our lands are safer. It was my pleasure to help you. Good day, and get some rest. It looks like yâall need it.â
The farmer waved them off as the party all nodded and walked off with slow strides, still waking up from their naps.
It wasnât hard to find an inn. It was even easier to find an inn that provided food and drinks. Aec and Silas were very happy about that. They were definitely going to be drinking later on after theyâd settled in their room and rested for a bit.
At the top of the stairs and down the hall was the partyâs room. Dragging themselves up the rickety staircase, the party eagerly awaited the beds theyâd just paid for. The four walked the remaining few metres before finally reaching their door with a renewed sense of vigour.
Sylvie, who had the key, let everyone in. The room wasnât overly cramped despite having two twin beds and a dresser. But it was about to be with four occupants.
âWeâll take the bed by the window,â Ace announced, walking to the end of the room and to said bed, Aec following behind him. The two sat down on either side of the bed, back to back and started undressing their outer layers to get comfortable.
âOkay,â Sylvie replied, closing the door and stepping over to his bed with Silas.
Silas sat down on the bed, his armour noisily clashing together with each bend. He let out a long, grateful sigh now that he was off of his feet. Slowly, but surely, Silas then stripped of his outer armour.
He had Sylvie help with the places where he couldnât reach. It was a slow process but Silas was glad in the end anyway when he was finally in his gambeson.
âThanks,â Silas yawned, leaning against Sylvie on the bed. âNo problem.â Sylvie patted Silasâs thigh before getting up.
âWhoâs staying in, whoâs going for drinks?â Sylvie addressed the room. He personally wasnât as physically exhausted as Silas and Aec for he fought with magic instead of brute strength and didnât move as much as they did when fighting monsters. That didnât mean he wasnât mentally drained though. Magic takes a lot out of a person when used in excess.
The Aces were laying together on their bed, Ace holding Aec and chanting under his breath. He was casting relief spells on Aec with the little mana he had left from the reprieve the wagon ride provided.
It was no wonder why Ace was doing as such, he wanted to ease
Aecâs aches and pains after they had been running and jumping and hacking away at the enemies in the dungeon today. Their bones and muscles were definitely sore and would be for a few days.
Sylvie couldnât help but smile at how sweet the scene was. He felt a bit bitter at the fact he couldnât do the same for Silas because he wasnât a healer, not like Ace and his skill. Sylvie knew basic healing magic but it only worked for visible wounds, not aching bones like he was sure Silas had since Ace had healed everyone of their lacerations before they left the dungeon.
âI could drink. I just need like a minute before I start moving again,â Silas replied with a long sigh while he laid down on the bed, stretching his arms above his head and pushing his head into the pillows. Sylvie nodded with a fond smile at the sigh of his partner.
Aec also reacted, raising their arm in the air, saying aye before lowering it.
Ace finished his hushed chanting before lifting his head, âIâll join too. A drink sounds nice.â
It was decided, the four of them would go for a drink and some dinner later on in the evening.
âPerfect, Iâll go cash in our loot and notify the guild weâre finished todayâs mission.â Sylvie, as the leader, was always the one to handle such business.
So, Sylvie dragged the sack of loot across the floor. He hauled it over his shoulder at the door and headed out of the room.
Aec turned their head and snuggled into Aceâs chest, wanting to fall asleep and never wake up.
It was amusing to Ace and he resumed petting Aecâs hair down gently while the three of them waited for their leader to return, no longer chanting this time. His mana was almost all used up and he needed to rest and let it build up again.
In the silent room of tired warriors you could hear much more clearly now the rowdyness downstairs in the tavern being made by other patrons all drinking and being merry with friends and family.
âSounds fun,â Silas commented after a moment of listening. He didnât sound excited or particularly interested though that was because of how tired he was. The more he waited for Sylvie to return the more he wondered if he really wanted to go and drink or he just wanted to stay in for the night.
Aec twisted their face out of the sanctuary that was Aceâs chest and looked over at Silas. âSuper fun,â they replied deadpanned, earning a quiet chuckle from Silas that turned into a stifled yawn.
Ace rolled his eyes at the two, amused by their somewhat cynical humour.
âNeither of you sound very enthused about going for a drink,â Ace commented as he stroked his fingers through Aecâs hair, hitting a snag before gently brushing it apart.
âJust exhausted. How do you seem so energetic?â Silas inquired, turning his head to look at the Aces.
Ace shrugged at Silasâ question. âNot sure. Guess Iâm just not as physically drained as you guys. That isnât to say Iâm not mentally drained. My mana is practically gone.â Ace brought his free hand to his forehead, feeling it lightly as the beginnings of a familiar throb began to sprout.
Silas whistled, turning his head upright and gazed at the ceiling. âSounds rough. Bet you could order an elixir downstairs instead of ale? Before the headaches kick in?â
Silas was well aware of the side effects one would experience when theyâre low on mana, it happens to both Sylvie and Ace a lot and neither hid it when they were depleted. It would then turn into Silas and Aec nursing their magical partners back to health afterwards.
Ace nodded. âYeah, Iâll do that. Bet Sylvie should as well. He was going crazy earlier today, Iâm shocked heâs still able to move even now.â There was a hint of concern in Aceâs voice. It was possible that Sylvie was hiding how affected he was by todayâs treacherous battles.
âIâm sure heâs fine. Sylvieâs not one to hide that sort of thing from us, plus he has more mana than the three of us combined.â Silas didnât doubt Sylvie and his strength for a minute, knowing if there was something wrong, like a headache, that Sylvie would come to him, complaining like a child begging for help and Silas wouldnât hesitate to comply
Before Ace could reply, the door swung open and the topic at hand strolled in heartily, an empty sack swung over his shoulder.
âSpeak of the devil. Howâd it go?â Ace perked up, addressing their leader.
Sylvie shot him a prideful grin and a peace sign. âWeâre loaded, lads.â
Immediately all three bedridden adventurers were invigorated with life, each sitting up in their respective beds with shared expressions of excitement.
âHell yeah! I knew today was gonna be lucrative.â Silas reached his hand out, beckoning Sylvie over who didnât think twice before closing the door and rushing right over to Silasâs awaiting embrace.
The Aces exchanged very pleased looks with each other, nodding in a very satisfied manner.
A beat of silence fell over the room as the four basked in their newly acquired wealth.
It was Ace who broke the silence. âItâs thanks to you two, though, Silas, Aec. Without the two of you being our offence, we would never have succeeded today.â Ace leaned down and kissed Aecâs cheek, the fondest, most loving smile on his face.
Sylvie couldnât help but agree. If it wasnât for Silas and Aecâs offensive skills, their party would not be nearly as strong as it is. Sure theyâre not a completely balanced unit, but they cover each otherâs weak spots pretty well thanks to Aec and Silas.
âI suppose we get a drink to celebrate today then,â Sylvie suggested with a smug grin, getting up from the bed which earned a little whine from Silas who had just gotten comfortable with Sylvie in his arms.
Ace also got up from the bed, leaving Aec cold and lonely in the bed but they didnât react.
âLetâs,â he replied to Sylvie, joining the blondâs side immediately.
The two more energetic party members left the room arms linked, leaving their partners behind to join them when theyâre ready.
Ace and Sylvie made their way down to the tavern and got a table.
The surrounding patrons were varying in appearance from small and forgettable to strong and memorable.
Ace shrunk in his seat a little as he surveyed the room. âSure are a lot of adventurer types in here, huh?â he commented, hiding his face with his hand, social anxiety kicking in.
Ace is fearless when it comes to monsters, fighting them, or anything that has to do with them, but when it comes to people, Ace is nothing more than a meek mouse.
âYeah, no one recognizable though,â Sylvie assessed, doing his own little survey without the nerves.
That did little to ease Aceâs anxiety but it wasnât ineffective. It was comforting to think that if they didnât recognize anyone in here, no one would recognize them and bother them, gossip about them, spread rumours, nothing.
Sylvie hailed down a bar wench to get drinks and dinner.
âWhen do you think the others will join us?â Ace asked, changing the subject to distract himself.
âProbably pretty soon, they wouldnât pass up the opportunity to drink after a day like today.â Sylvie was right, Aec and Silas were the heavier drinkers of the party and would not pass up a chance to knock a few back. No matter how roughed up they were.
The bar wench came and went with their orders before Aec and Silas arrived, Ace and Sylvie had passed the time with idle chat.
Silas found Sylvie and Ace first and directed himself and Aec over to them.
They sat down next to their respective partners before immediately slumping their shoulders and resting their foreheads on the cold tabletop.
âGood evening to you two, feel a little better?â Ace asked, already patting the back of Aecâs head comfortingly.
âYeah, more awake, and definitely more inclined to drink now, did you two order yet?â Silas asked with a yawn, lifting his head finally from the table.
âYeah, we ordered dinner for you two as well,â Sylvie notified Silas, noticing in the corner of his eye an adventurer not far from their table glaring at their table. There wasnât anything memorable or recognizable about the adventurer. He was scarred and muscled but no more scary looking than a measly boar. Sylvie didnât say anything to his friends, ignoring the adventurer in favour of enjoying the evening with them.
Their dinners arrived shortly after Silas and Aec joined the table and the wench was a lot less confused about four dinners being ordered after seeing them.
Drinks were ordered and meals were eaten.
As Aec and Silas were revived by the ale, Sylvie noticed the adventurer from earlier hadnât stopped staring for most of the evening. It was unnerving but as he didnât come over to start anything, Sylvie left it alone.
With three orders of drinks downed, Aec, the quietest and arguably most intimidating of the party, was letting loose now, letting themself be known to the rest of the establishment without being a nuisance, speaking their mind a bit more freely, being less tightlipped under influence.
They were all over Ace, arms draped over the clericâs shoulders, spouting about how amazing Ace is, how they wouldnât be here if it wasnât for his magic. In between each compliment was a sloppy peck to the cheek or forehead while Sylvie and Silas laughed. Needless to say, Ace was embarrassed and beet red but he didnât push his love away because that would be more trouble than just letting Aec be clingy and talk him up.
âUgh, this makes me regret getting only one room. Please tell me you two arenât gonna . . . you know?â Silas asked, grimacing at Aecâs behaviour.
Ace immediately began to shake his head, even more, embarrassed now if that was possible. âOh no, no, no! No! Itâs to bed for us, I promise!â
âGood.â Silas didnât press the matter after Aceâs clear discomfort with the topic.
Aec, hiccupping a little, pointed at Silas accusingly. âNeither are you two allowed to either,â they grimaced before dropping their arm and reclusing back to Aceâs side for support. Ace patted down their hair gently.
Off to the side, Sylvie noticed the adventurer was now getting up from his table. Maybe he was finally leaving and Sylvie could relax.
Sylvie kept a close eye on the brute as he walked. To Sylvieâs no surprise at all, the burly, angry-looking adventurer headed their way.
In moments he was at the partyâs table, glowering accusingly at Aec. He took an intimidating stance, towering over the table.
Sylvie, who had made note of him earlier, looked up at the man, keeping a neutral expression.
âCan we help you sir?â he asked, unable to keep any snobbiness out of his tone.
With Ace being the only other sober person at the table, he knew to keep quiet and let Sylvie deal with whatever this could be. Though he doubted Silas and Aec had the same train of thought.
Silas immediately leaned across the table, staring the brute down with drunken confidence. Aec ignored him in favour of finishing the last sip of their drink before grabbing another cup theyâd had at the ready.
âYeah, what the fuck do ya want?â Silas added to Sylvieâs question, with no regard for keeping the peace.
The broad, angry-looking adventurer with scars across his face leaned down a bit, narrowing his gaze on Aec. He completely ignored both Silas and Sylvieâs questions.
âYouâre Aeson, the rogue thief, aren't cha?â he asked, barely biting back a snarl.
Aec, intoxicated beyond belief, didnât make a move to look at or respond to the brute.
This angered the man. He brought down his fist on the table, causing the dishes to rattle a bit.
âHey! Iâm talking to you, asshole!â he growled, growing more hostile by the second.
Ace shook when the table did, lowering his head, feeling terrified. What did this guy want with Aec?
Nothing good, that was for sure.
Silas and Sylvie narrowed their gazes at the adventurers, not happy with the bruteâs behaviour.
âLook man, I donât know what you want with our friend, but weâre trying to have a nice dinner after a very long day, so if you could leave us alone, that would be great.â Sylvie kept his tone as polite as possible, which was growing difficult. It was clear this guy was very aggressive and probably had a few over the course of the night, and Sylvie didnât want to unnecessarily set him off anymore and cause a fight.
Scar-Face finally turned to Sylvie, as if only acknowledging him now.
âShut up and stay out of this. I just want the thief,â he declared, almost spitting on Sylvie.
âTheyâre not a thief.â It was so quiet that it almost went unheard, but only almost.
Everyone turned their attention on Ace, the one whoâd spoken up meekly.
âWhatâd you just say, cleric?â Scar-Face spat at Ace. It was clear he thought that Aceâs class was lower than his own, weaker.
Ace lifted his gaze from his dinner plate and looked Scar-Face in the eye, though terrified, and glared as hard as he could. âI said: theyâre not a thief.â Ace clenched his hands under the table, feeling sweat build-up, sticking his shirt to the back of his chair.
Scar-Face leaned in real close to Ace, glaring even harder back.
It took everything Ace had not to back down in fear. Scar-Face was bigger than him and way stronger than him. Challenging him like this was an incredibly stupid idea but Ace couldnât stand listening to this scary nobody insulting his partner.
A shuffle of movement and the sound of a mug hitting the table at Aceâs side and suddenly, Aec was paying attention to what was going on.
âGet any closer to him and youâll regret it,â Aec threatened coolly. Their tone was relaxed, no sign of intoxication, yet their words were as sharp as any knife they held.
Scar-Face didnât back off, but he didnât move to get anymore in Aceâs face. Surprisingly, he was thinking his options through.
Ace didnât move either. He was paralyzed with fright but didnât want to appear weak in front of Scar-Face.
A moment went by.
Then two.
No one said anything, locked in an intense staredown with each other.
âMove away from him,â Aec suddenly ordered Scar-Face, their voice as steady as before but now a hint of anger was being restrained.
Scar-Face didnât move for a second, only quickly flicking his gaze onto Aec, who returned the gesture with a cold glare that showed Aecâs patience was wearing incredibly thin.
Scar-Face finally straightened up, moving away from Ace. He looked down at the table with a nasty scowl, the maliciousness enhanced by his ugly appearance.
At last, Ace felt he could breathe again. He immediately slumped in his seat and inched closer to Aec, their shoulders bumping gently. âGood to see youâre not as stupid as you look,â Aec smirked at their cup, knowing full well that they were antagonizing Scar-Face. They just couldnât stop themself, they were drunk and this guy upset Ace as well as Silas and Sylvie, of course, they wonât hold back.
âWhatâd you just say, thief?!â
Aec turned to Scar-Face, their signature shit-eating smirk on their face. âDeaf? Or was I wrong and you really are just as stupid as you look?â
âThatâs it!â Scar-Face reached over Ace and grabbed Aecâs collar, effectively dragging them out of their seat and to their feet.
Ace immediately ducked down under Scar-Faceâs arm, instinctively shrinking in on himself to be less of an obstacle.
On the other side of the table, both Silas and Sylvie jumped out of their seats, reacting to Scar-Faceâs aggressive movements.
Aec, unfazed by Scar-Faceâs actions, looked up at their opponent with a bored expression that did well to hide any hint of alcohol or anger underneath.
âGonna hit me or just gawk at me like an idiot?â
âStop calling me stupid!â Scar-Face growled, winding back his fist, following through with a crisp punch to Aecâs jaw, knocking the rogue to the floor.
âHey!â both Silas and Sylvie exclaimed, stepping around the table with their fists raised.
By now, the party had caught the attention of the other patrons and the whole floor went quiet in anticipation.
From the floor, Aec sat up and held their jaw. They didnât groan, didnât make a sound. They held up their hand, stopping Silas and Sylvie from advancing, effectively telling them both that they had this.
Aec got to their feet and cracked their knuckles, stepping around Aceâs chair and in front of Scar-Face.
âItâs on now, buddy.â
â
âOw, ow, ow! Stop!â
âWell, if you stopped squirming, it wouldnât hurt, now stop moving.â
Ace dabbed the cloth coated with disinfectant on the cut above Aecâs eye gently, shaking slightly from tensing his arm. He didnât want to hit Aecâs eye after all.
Underneath, Aec tensed when Ace made contact but didnât shake enough that it warranted a comment from Ace.
The reason that Ace was tending to Aecâs wounds manually was that their wounds were so minor and theyâd been acquired foolishly, that Ace didnât think they deserved magic. Aec can just deal with the minor cuts and bruises theyâd gotten from the brawl until they heal away on their own.
Ace lowered the cloth after heâd applied enough disinfectant to the cut. He bandaged the cut quickly before sitting back with a sigh. He gazed upon his loveâs bruised-up face with both concern and disappointment.
Aec caught onto Aceâs expression and looked away. âStop looking at me like that already,â they muttered in a grumbly tone.
Aceâs face had been moving between annoyed and disappointed while he was tending to Aec and the guilt welled each time Aec snuck a peek.
âThen stop doing stupid, reckless things!â Ace snapped, causing Aec to startle just slightly. It was a rush of frustration that died as soon as Ace had spoken. A moment went by of stunned silence before Ace sighed, lowering his head.
âSorry, I didnât mean to snap.â Ace shuffled himself across the bed, getting closer to Aec. âI justâ I donât like seeing you hurt, ever, even if I know youâll be fine afterwards. Because, one day, I know you wonât be and I donât want that day to come sooner than it has to because you did something reckless and dumb.â
Ace forced himself to smile and reached out and grabbed Aecâs hand, squeezing it gently. âIâm not mad at you, I know why you acted like you did but I just canât help but feel frustrated or upset when you get like this, all bruised up over something trivial. I love you and I want you to take care of yourself better.â
Aec finally allowed themself to glance at their lover. Seeing Aceâs smile was enough for the shame that had built up to wash away in an instant.
They offered their own little smile, showing they heard and understood Aceâs words.
âIâm reckless and stupid because I love you. I will do anything for you, anything to protect you. I donât care if I get hurt because at least Iâll know youâre okay. And if youâre okay then thatâs all that matters to me.â
âYouâre sweet, but that doesnât mean Iâm okay with you behaving like this. A few beautiful words arenât enough to sway me.â
Ace looks down at their entwined hands, fondness softening his features even more.
Aec grips Aceâs hand tighter and leans in closer. They nudge Aceâs cheek with their nose, getting him to look them in the eye. A confident, perhaps almost smug smile finds its way on Aecâs lips.
âWhat about a kiss then?â Their voice is a soft whisper before a kiss just as soft is planted.
It takes a few moments to do so, but Ace does pull away with a slight shake of his head.
âAs much as I love when you do that, no,â he says with a quiet little laugh and that quiet little laugh is all Aec needs to know that Ace has forgiven them.
A stand-alone short of my Space Aces.

They sat in silence on the couch, both staring at him as he leaps up and down, positively spilling energy every time he moves. He just canât stop buzzing. Itâs electrifying to watch.
âI just donât see it,â Silas comments almost rudely. He drops his chin into his palm, eyes trained on his friend across the room.
âOf course you donât.â
Aec punches Silasâ shoulder lightly. Silas lets out a weak, fake groan immediately, cradling his shoulder. âOwie, you meanie,â he whines.
Aec rolls their eyes at their friend, knowing heâs fine.
They both take a breath once the momentâs passed and theyâve shared the typical small laugh and resume staring at their mutual friend.
Silas doesnât understand what it is that Aec sees in Ace. The boyâs a fool, an utter fool.
âI mean, I guess heâs cute, in a weird, nerdy way. If youâre into short, emotional smart-asses.â Silas considers Ace one of his best friends along with Aec, but that doesnât mean Ace is his type at all.
Next to Silas, Aec scoffs, âIsnât your boyfriend a short, emotional smart-ass?â
Immediately, Silas is thinking of his boyfriend and how short he is, how emotional he gets, and how smart he is. Heâs stuttering a retort right after.
âSylvieâs . . . Sylvieâs . . . different . . .â Silas started to say, stumbling over his thoughts.
Aec nods smugly. âRiiiight, different,â they drawl, only succeeding in making Silas annoyed at them.
âBecause I thought,â Aec continues, âthat Sylvie was pretty short, pretty emotional, and very much a smart-ass about everything.â
âShut up.â Silas wants to cross his arms, but he knows heâll only look childish.
Aec only chuckles in response before they resume gazing at their energetic fool across the room.
Ace, across the room, has now quieted his explosive movements. You can still hear him all the way across the living room, but itâs less obtrusive and eye-catching than before.
The two friends sit and watch their friend for another minute before Silas canât take it anymore.
âJust, tell me, what is it about him that youâre so drawn to? Because I really canât see it.â Silas motions at Ace with a harsh wave of his hand. Ace doesnât take notice, still cooped up in his own world across the living room.
Aec shrugs after a moment of contemplation. They canât put it simply for Silas to understand just what it is that they see in their childhood best friend. âI donât know.â
Silas gives a look of dismay at Aecâs words. âWhat?! How can you not know what it is that you like about him?! It has to be something!â Silas takes Aec by the shoulders, twisting to face his friend. He shakes them violently for a moment as if that would snap some sort of epiphany onto Aec about their feelings for Ace.
Aec lets Silas manhandle them for a few seconds before they shove Silasâ hands off of them gently.
âI donât know what it is exactly. Okay? It could be because of how stupidly happy he gets when he comes across something cool on Instagram or Tumblr. Or it could be how he always holds doors open for people when weâre out, even if the people are too far away, he waits for them patiently with this polite smile that suits him so perfectly. Or maybe itâs because heâs so smart and almost always has an answer for a question I have and he has no problems showing off his intellect to people yet heâs still full of insecurities and no self-esteem so he makes up for it with faux confidence that isnât really there. Or â or maybe I fell for him because heâs inherently kind where I am rude and heâs calm where Iâm freaking out, and he solves the problems I canât. Maybe I love him because whatever I lack he has an abundance of and where I have my faults, his strengths keep me together. Heâs warm when Iâm cold and I look at him and I just . . . itâs like when the Grinchâs heart grows three sizesââ Aec stops when they realize theyâre rambling, saying too much.
They drop their head and lace their hands together on their lap. Aec stares at their entwined fingers intently while their face reddens a bit just under their eyes. Itâs embarrassing how much they have to say about their best friend. Silas is definitely going to tease them now. They squeeze their eyes shut, pulse now racing in their ears while they wait for the inevitable remarks from their friend.
âWhoa,â is all Silas can say, as Aecâs rambled but clear confessions put him into a stupor. He shakes it off and places a gentle hand on Aecâs right shoulder.
The words of surprise and the friendly contact startle Aec into looking back at Silas. They find their friend is smiling fondly at them.
âWhaââ Aec starts to ask when Silas interrupts them with: âthatâs a lot, dude, that you clearly needed to get off your chest. Iâm guessing you havenât told Resident Dumbass over there how you feel yet?â
Aec shakes their head regrettably at Silasâs question while their whole system calms down. Their pulse goes from deafening all over back to quiet and steady.
They have not yet confessed how they feel towards their best friend just yet.
Silas removes his hand from Aecâs shoulder and turns towards the subject of their conversation. It appears that now Ace has finally gotten all that raw excitement out of his system and has calmed down fully.
Silas gazes at his friend with a new perspective about him.
This time, instead of seeing an immature smartass like before, Silas sees a young man who wears his heart on his sleeve, too trusting and kind for the hardships society will throw at him. He sees an earnest and smart man who will give more to the world than heâll take.
Silas looks at his friend and he sees more than just surface.
He remembers all the times Ace was there for him and everyone else, every time they were out and he did in fact hold doors open for strangers even when it inconvenienced him.
How every time someone bumped into him, he would apologize instead, and how he always said thank you.
How every message or email was worded so formally and properly with seldom any mistakes.
Aec is right to fall for this person. Sure, Ace wasnât perfect, everyone has flaws, but Aceâs strengths outshone his weaknesses.
Itâs only when Ace looks Silas in the eye when Silas realizes heâs been staring, deep in thought. Ace, now noticing his two friends, strides over contently.
âHey guys, whatâs going on over here?â
Ace asks, taking a seat next to Aec, filling out the rest of the couch.
Aec immediately reacts to their crushâs presence and twists, facing them.
âNothing really, weâre just brainstorming ideas for Silas on how heâll plan his and Sylvieâs next anniversary. Itâs coming up, right Silas?â The tone of Aecâs voice when they address Silas with their smoothly concocted lie tells Silas to play along, so he does. He wonât bring up Aecâs feeling like a jackass. When Aec wants to confess, theyâll confess, Silas isnât going to take that from his friend.
âThatâs right. One year, itâs right around the corner.â Ace smiles brightly at the news, believing every word thatâs fed to him.
âWow! Thatâs amazing! Congrats, man.â Silas doesnât feel guilty for lying to his friend and heâs sure Aec doesnât feel guilty either.
With Ace now focused on his friends instead of whatever piqued his excitement, Silas figures he should get going. Heâs been here long enough and Sylvie will be off the clock soon.
Silas yawns, stretching his arms higher above his head than needed and gets up. âWell, I should get going. Sylvie will be getting home soon and I wanna make dinner before he gets there because heâll definitely be stressed.â The excuse is true so Silas doesnât feel like he lied at all.
Aec gets up too. âIâll walk you out,â they say, their tone leaving no room for negotiating. Silas nods, accepting the offer without complaint because of it.
They both walk to the front door of the apartment. Aec leans on the wall while Silas gets his shoes on. Itâs quiet for a moment before Aec speaks up.
âThanks . . . you know, for not telling him. I donât think I could handle it right now if he found out and didnât feel the same.â Aec focuses on the floor, staring at a particularly unique part of the tiles.
Silas finishes tying his shoelaces and smiles, getting to his feet. The vulnerability Aec is showing makes the respect Silas has for them grow tenfold.
âDonât worry about it, dude. I wouldnât and wonât say anything. This is for you to tell him, not me. And hey,â Silas claps Aec on the shoulders, gaining their attention, âI can definitely see it now, what you see in him.â
The kind words bring a tiny smile to Aecâs face and they nod, staring their friend right in the eye.
Silas nods back before heâs satisfied and steps away, arms falling to his sides. He opens the door and steps out. âSee you guys later.â He gives a curt wave that Aec returns before turning and walking down the hall.
Aec closes the door once their friend is no longer looking. They lock it and smile.
