“Dr. Pierce and Mr. Hyde” (s02e05) is the debut of Sleep-Deprived Hawkeye. This idea would be repeated many times, becoming a trope in the series–over the space of a day or two, a war-crazed person shows their vulnerability when worn down by fatigue, bad news and/or drunkenness. “Carry On, Hawkeye” is another example in this season. They are all richly psychological and interesting. I’m a sucker for the ones that deal with someone other than Hawkeye, like “Hotlips and Empty Arms,” which comes in season 2 also.
And Alan Alda's performance is just visceral.
