One of the biggest natural disasters in the US that many discuss today was hurricane Katrina in 2005, where thousands were injured or died, $125 billion dollars in damages ensued, and a devastating aftermath that left the people of New Orleans destitute.
What made hurricane Katrina a prevalent disaster to this day was the cause and the brutal aftermath that failed our people. Lives were already taken due to the flooding and violent winds, but it could have been prevented if it hadnโt been from the faulty engineering in New Orleans flood protection systems.ย
To make matters worse, leadership failed to provide adequate help for the citizens affected by the hurricane. Help was slowly sent out with large numbers of active-duty troops not arriving until after the fact, funding was limited, and overall, not enough was done to warn the citizens beforehand.
Hurricane Katrina was devastating, but the aftermath proved to have been worse than the event itself with many lacking the empathy and finances to care about the catastrophe and its people.
