pairing :: jaafar Jackson x sisters bsf!reader
summary :: an unexpected visit, crashed plans and ruined jeans.
a/n :: this is like my first time writing soo please constructive criticism is welcome but please cut me some slack
You and Ashlee had been best friends for countless years — at least, that’s what you both like to say. In reality, it’s only been 2 years. So when she texted you this morning, it wasn’t exactly shocking.
A :: “goooooodmorning, we still on for today?”
“yes, wait why are you checking in before? you never do.’’
A :: “uhh, probably cause of the little mystery visit I got last night? wait did you not read the texts I sent you last night?’’
You scrolled back up through the long thread of texts Ashlee had sent you in her late-night scrolling while you were in bed. Food recipes, cute cats, vacation trip ideas—every possible distraction under the sun. You barely made it three messages before your thumb got tired. And what was with those 20+ videos? Honestly, at some point, you started to wonder if she was soft-launching as a YouTuber, sending you her entire backlog. Still, in the middle of all that chaos was the actual message you had quickly skimmed over, pretending you didn't see the video dump.
A :: ‘’GIRL. you will never believe who just showed up at my door.’’
And there it was attached underneath the message, a selfie of her and Jaafar.
Jaafar had been away for several months shooting ‘Michael’ and hadn't been able to see his family due to his flying around the country to shoot new scenes, re-take scenes, etc. The same man who you were completely enamoured by the first time you had seen him, back when Ashlee took you to the first Jackson family dinner and practically forced you into the chair next to him.
Ever since that moment, you haven't seen Jaafar again because of his filming. So when you saw that selfie of Ashlee with Jaafar, your heart may or may not have skipped a beat. You tried to play it cool, but you caught yourself staring at your phone longer than you’d ever admit, slightly flustered and suddenly hyper-aware of your bedhead and mismatched pyjamas, as if he could see you through the screen. But there he was, standing at your best friend's doorstep. It wasn't shocking or anything, after all, he was her big brother.
A :: “Girl, hello, don't just leave me on opened, did you see who showed up last night or not?”
“Oh, so Jaafar is back then?”
A :: “Yes, and I was wondering if you, the BESTEST bestfriend i have ever had in like the whole entire world and universe would be okay with him tagging along to our movie date today….?”
Of fucking course you would be. I mean, this man could hop onto the biggest event of your life, and you would be okay with it. But Jaafar or Ashlee didn't need to know that. I mean, Ashlee already had suspicions that you found Jaafar attractive through watching you stare at him for 10 minutes at the family dinner, but that's all she knew and all she needed to know it was her big brother at the end of the day.
A :: “Please, please please PLEASE.”
‘’ Yeah girl that's fine, don't worry about it.’’
A :: ‘’ THANK YOU THANK YOU, I love you!!”
Hours pass in the conversation between you and Ashlee, asking what each other is wearing, what time to meet up at the cinema, etc.
If you were being completely honest with yourself, you had spent the past 3 hours pacing back and forth in your room as you were about to see Jaafar again, even if it was just being in a pitch-black room for a couple of hours watching a film.
Finally, 7:00pm rolled around, the agreed-upon time everyone was going to meet up at the theatre. To your knowledge, Ashlee and Jaafar were coming in the same car, and you would meet the two of them there. Waiting outside the movie theatre stood in the most basic outfit you could even conjure up in your mind, but still enough to look like you had put a tad bit of effort in, it felt like you were standing waiting under the shelter from the rain hammering down for ages. “What if they both cancelled? I mean, Ashlee hadn't texted in roughly an hour; that was enough time to cancel, right? You thought to yourself, but pushed the thought down before it started to ruin your night more than intended, but the little lingering part of you kept checking the time, just in case.
Your head whipped up at the noise of a car door slamming shut in contrast to the brutal rain, and that's when you saw him. Running towards you in the pouring rain, I mean, sure it probably wasn't towards you and more towards the shelter outside the cinema, but it still looked like it was straight out of a movie scene, then suddenly a voice snapped you back to reality.
“A bit rainy, huh?” Ashlee’s voice rang through your ears with a soft chuckle followed after it.
‘’Hm, no, not at all.’’ Jaafar commented, rubbing his hand over his soft curls soaked by the rainwater, smiling at Ashlee, then turning to you. “Long time no see, huh?”
Your stomach almost flipped inside out right there and then, but then again, the lingering thought at the back of your mind of ‘he is just a friend and nothing will happen, he sees you as a younger sister just like Ashlee’ pushed that feeling down before it even had a chance to take action.
“Yeah, been a while, huh? Only 2 years, but who's counting?” You chuckled out awkwardly.
Smooth, real fucking smooth, you thought to yourself, immediately wanting to take back that entire last part of your sentence.
He chuckled awkwardly, smiling at you, before suggesting going inside to get the movie tickets and snacks. As you all turned around to walk into the cinema, Ashlee grabbed your hand, practically skipping into the movie theatre. As all of you waited in the queue to get popcorn because Jaafar claimed “you can't go to the movies and not get popcorn, it's like illegal.’ which you totally agreed with, but Ashlee complained how overpriced the economy is and how you both buying popcorn is adding to the problem. Then, during the peak of her rant, a loud Next here!!’’ grabbed all of your guys' attention.
The three of you approached the counter and ordered what you wanted, Jaafar getting a sweet popcorn and you getting a Salty one. As the woman came back with the two popcorn buckets, it was nearly impossible to tell whose was whose.
“Uhh, that one looks saltier’’ you mumbled out.
‘’How can you tell what one is saltier just by looking at them?’’
‘’I just can, trust me. I bet you a Coke that that one is the salty one.’’
He picked up one piece of popcorn and threw it into his mouth.
‘’That is one sweet bit of popcorn.’’
‘’no its not, you're lying’’ you exclaimed, grabbing one for yourself and trying it, it was in fact sweet.
‘’Alright, alright, I owe you a Coke.’’ You sighed, ordering him a Coke.
eventually you made it to the theatre after all of the hassle with popcorn, sodas and the gigantic set of stairs you had to climb to get to your seats. Jaafar was in seat G32, Ashlee was in seat G30, and you were in seat G31. Right next to Jaafar, for some reason, this entire time you imagined Ashlee in the middle of the two of you, but apparently that's not what the universe has planned for you.
You relaxed into your seat, but not totally, as the man you thought was the genuine definition of an angel sat right to your left. Just as the lights started to dim and everyone started to relax for real, this time you went over to grab your drink, but obnoxiously overestimating how far away it was and ended up knocking the sticky soda all over Jaafar's lap.
“Oh my god, I'm so sorry, I'm so sorry, I'm so sorry”, you gasped out, littering hushed apologies as he laughed and wiped the ice off his lap.
‘Oh no, don't worry about it honey, honestly ill just clean it up”
“I've totally ruined your jeans, I'm so sorry. Please let me clean this up. Don't move, I'm so sorry,’’ you said, getting up out of your seat, rushing to the bathroom, murmuring insults to yourself on how stupid you were to have let this happen. As you made it back to the theatre, you had a handful of paper towels to hopefully soak up some of the soda embedded into his jeans and chair. He grabbed some of the paper towels out of your hand, soaking up the wet on his jeans but it didn't really help as the paper towels kept sticking and then ripping off, leaving his jeans now covered in paper towels and sticky soda. “Well, that didn't really work, huh?” He said lightheartedly, smiling up at you with that perfect smile which almost made you forget about the situation you were in right now.
The rest of the night, you sat in your cinema chair, soaking up the guilt and embarrassment left by everything in hopes of trying to either be funny or just a plain accident, but deep down, the best part of the night was simply that you got to see Jaafar again after years of not seeing him, but your mind also lingered on the word he said in a moment of chaos “honey.”.
