One day, you realise that there are some people you’ll never see again. At least, not in the same way.

Ghost #5 // As the children play legos
Me: You need more sleep.
Her: I haven't slept in days. I've been having nightmares that my son died.
Me: But you don't have a son.
Her: I did. My mother in law was visiting and she didn't approve of me because I wasn't Arab. The day after we came back from the hospital we were all fighting - my husband, her and I as I was cooking dinner.
Me: What happened?
Her: The doctor said he died of a sudden heart attack. The sounds of our voices killed him.
I was told I have trouble letting go. I didn’t realize how true that was until three months later, sitting in the library studying for my graduate school exams, did all my resentment towards you resurface. I’ve taught meditations to my students, and now the only meditations that come are the ones by Frank O’ Hara. I sit here staring at the man with the red shirt who sits with a canvas bag like yours, and I mouth to myself: “Each time my heart is broken I feel more adventurous (and how the same names keep reoccurring on that interminable list!), but one of these days there’ll be nothing left with which to venture forth.” I feel defeated.

& today she gave me the best advice:
don't be angry
don't be angry
don't be angry
It took two minutes for me to fall back in love with you.
Is it possible I've never stopped loving you at all?
it is for the best that our paths do not overlap twice. i cannot return to question marks after discovering a definitive answer.

I.
When asked why I smoked so much, I should have said that there is
something about watching the mist hang in the air, and breaking it
with the tips of my fingers. Doing so would have made it easier to explain
why I think all the beauty in the world is contained within you.
II.
I want to tell you that the army is killing you, but instead I told the girl
that made my coffee yesterday. She asked what made you special,
and even though I’ve written a dozen poems about you, they weren’t enough
to explain how when I think of you - I think of Dali’s The Burning Giraffes.
Except, only, I think of the after. It’s the potentiality of the resurrection.
III.
5:09am - It’s my favorite time of day, and from my bedroom window,
I can watch the world start burning. You asked me what my favorite holidays
were and they are the ones in which fireworks destroy the clouds.
V.
We are all filled with secrets, but you, mostly with the internalized failures
of your father. They carved those fears out of you and promised a home. You
are all heart and warmth. You can’t exist in their world without first extinguishing
yourself. You belong in a softer world, and we will make it for you.

New York in the Style of Frank O Hara
The High Line is another way for the city to advertise Times Square is running out of room and there aren’t enough walls in the subway for art the children are climbing the human centipede and when we get close they flee and we do too, into the crowd and we point to the tree budding with artichokes and the city has enough ugly buildings and they are adding one more across the street we should give it a chance but the fertility rate of americans is declining and the population here is pushing more people underground. the pigeon on the street has lost its feathers and the seagull just dove into the trash can and i’m here on this sidewalk watching you smoke.
The Cloisters has two blonde waitresses and when we get the attention of one we realize that we need the other. 59th street is picking up and the sun is going down and Coney Island is lined with children waiting. vines are hanging above our heads and the fountain is trickling water, but not consistently and the mural in the back of the village with red houses is where I would imagine a girl named sienna would live but she lives here and she’s just turned 21. anything with mint i think and anything with mint you say and we absorb each other’s company my phone crashes and i don't care because soon we are off. St Marks Place is like a movie and our bodies are floating there is an explosion in the sky and you point me towards the trees but i just want to look at you. a fire truck is trailing behind two bicycles - fires never get put out soon enough in New York. across the street is a speakeasy with a red phone and you ring and we are in! a half hour you say and we are on red stools and you unbutton your shirt and my fingers feel across the tattoo on your chest - jesus lion, I smile towards the park - let’s go. you tell me you want to do something unexpected which makes it expected but i think you did it more for the people stumbling by. let's climb the fence i say but my ankles sprained and we settle into a bench - there goes a firefly. you want to capture it and i don’t want to own anything. is that a man videotaping us from the bush? i have always wanted to steal a bike but my friend is waiting for her friends and soon we are there at 13th.
13th Step you showed me the Flat Iron Building and then we were here, three years ago, but now it is busy and you have to hold my hand as we move through the people and you are singing and i am whispering stories in your ear about man bun - the girl he loves is making out with a guy in a white shirt and the girl on top of us is missing hers she is everyone’s. mish is playing beer pong and i am holding your hand and moving the other across your thigh and when i tell you i want you we are outside looking for more. i am tired and i fall asleep on the sidewalk and i am up and we find an unlocked gate. we go down. Thursday is the stores name but today is tuesday. five blocks away, our friends are doing lines of coke and they are texting us and i'm laughing because it’s easier to laugh with you when it is dark and there are people walking past unaware. The Immigrant is across the street and you say we are all immigrants. there is too much silence and to fill the space you ask me what i am thinking and i am thinking that three years ago i found myself in this city, and tonight i’ve lost myself.
