It was a normal shift. As far as you could call an ED shift normal. It was the early afternoon when a seven-year-old girl called Claudia was brought in by EMT, accompanied by her older sister Emily, herself only nine years old.
The EMTs said that the sister had called 911 because Claudia had fainted while playing in the yard. You were working on her with Dr. McKay, Javadi and Perlah. The girls were brought in alone. Their mother was at the grocery store when it happened, their dad at work.
“Emma, would you bring Emily to the cafeteria and get her some snacks? And then try to call her parents to have them come here?”, you asked your trainee nurse. “Of course”, Emma nodded. “Come on, I’ll show you where they hide the good stuff”, she offered her hand to the little girl and walked out with her. She was hesitantly at first, not wanting to leave her little sister behind, which you understood so well. You couldn’t help but see your youngest sister Anna in Claudia and immediately formed an attachment to her.
Getting Emily out of the room was also important to being able to give a good first examination, especially since Claudia came in unconscious. You didn’t know what you could find and you didn’t need a nine-year-old in the room for that.
During her examination, Claudia woke up. She looked scared because of so many strangers around her, but otherwise her vitals actually looked good. With the help of Perlah, you put her into a gown and placed her clothes into a plastic bag for the parents to take home with them.
“Claudia? I’m doctor McKay and this is student doctor Javadi and nurse Y/N”, McKay introduced the people around her bed. She looked at everybody with big eyes. “You are in the hospital because your sister said you fainted while playing in the yard. How are you feeling?”, Dr. McKay asked her.
“Where’s my mom?”, she asked in a shy tone. “Someone’s calling her right now with the help of your sister Emily”, you told her and reached out to hold her tiny hand. You could see her eyes wandering to the Care Bear tattoo on your arm and it made you smile. It always worked wonders with kids.
“We will bring Emily here to keep you company while we get some tests done, alright?”, McKay explained further and the little girl just nodded.
“I’m going to stay here with you, Claudia. You don’t have to be afraid. We’re gonna take good care of you”, you smiled at her and squeezed her hand reassuringly.
“Let’s get some bloodwork done. I wanna hold off on radiology, don’t want to put her little body through it if not necessary. Her sister said, she didn’t hit her head when she fell, so I wanna hold off on CT, too. But we gotta keep a close eye on her”, Dr. McKay told Javadi when the two of them stepped away from the bed but you heard every word. You got started on setting everything up to get her blood drawn.
Claudia looked at you with big eyes, following your every move when you unpacked the set and especially when you unpacked the needle. She immediately pulled her arm under the covers.
“Don’t worry, Claudia. I’m excellent at drawing blood, you won’t feel a thing, I promise you”, you told her in a calm voice. Claudia just shook her head. “What? You don’t believe me?”, you asked, playfully shocked. Claudia shook her head again.
You kept setting everything up while Javadi typed in Dr. McKay’s orders into Claudia’s chart.
“You look like a smart girl. I bet if you know how everything works, you wouldn’t be scared of it”, you said and pulled up the tray of supplies to the bed.
“This is a tourniquet. We put this on your upper arm and pull it really tight, so the veins in your arm say hello to us. It helps us to see which veins is really good for drawing blood. They’re basically all volunteering, saying ‘Pick me!’, ‘Pick me!’”, you told her and put your arm up like an eager student in class, eliciting a little laugh from Claudia. Victory number one.
“And when we have chosen the winner, we then wipe the spot with this little patch which has alcohol on it. It cleans the skin to have no germs there whatsoever”, you said and made a big wave motion with your hands. You learned over time that exaggerated motions helped to make it seem funnier to kids.
“And then, the big finale. I poke you with this tiny, tiny needle here”, you said and held up the little butterfly needle, used for kids. You saw Claudia gulping at the sight.
“After that, piece of cake. I just attach these tubes to the other end of the butterfly and voila”, you said and raised your arms like you were a gymnast that had just dismounted the bars with a perfect stance.
Claudia giggled again. Victory number two.
“Is it okay if we start with the tourniquet?”, you asked and held up the band. Claudia hesitated but lightly nodded her head. You wrapped it around her arm and pulled it tight. “How’s that?”, you asked her. “It’s okay”, she mumbled. “Do you think we can go tighter?”, you asked. She nodded her head with a brave face. “Oh my god, your muscles are so big, I can’t get it tighter. Take a look at that strong girl, Perlah”, you said in playful seriousness and turned around to your colleague. “Wow, strong girl”, Perlah agreed. You actually didn’t need to pull it any tighter, you just needed her to have a win.
“Okay, let’s see who’s volunteering to be the best vein”, you mentioned curiously and bent over her arm. Claudia was doing the same even though she didn’t know what she was looking for.
“Oh man. There are so many. That’s so hard to choose from. Can you see how many are waving their hands to be chosen?”, you asked Claudia. “There’s this one…and this one…and this one”, you pointed at all the veins that were showing up. “I can’t decide, they all look like perfect. Can you help me out, Claudia?”, you asked her. While Claudia took a look at her arm, you put some alcohol on a pad and bent over her arm again.
“I think I like this one?”, she said but it sounded more like a question. “I like this one, too”, you told her in a whisper like it was a secret and winked at her. Claudia looked really proud that she had chosen the right one. Victory number three.
You wiped down the spot on her arm and grabbed the butterfly needle next. “Okay. Now, the big finale”, you said and took a deep breath like you were an artist, about to go on stage. In a way, you were.
“You don’t have to look if you don’t want to. I will look because it happens so fast, if I don’t look, I’ll miss it”, you said. “I’ll look”, Claudia said in a brave tone and together, you took a deep breath.
“Ready? You gotta be careful or you’ll miss it”, you reminded her and Claudia nodded with a determined look on her face.
“Okay. One…two…hey, what’s that?”, you said and pointed at the other end of the room. When Claudia’s head spun around, you quickly poked her with the needle and secured the butterfly.
“Oh no, you missed it”, you said and huffed. “It’s already over?”, Claudia asked and sounded actually disappointed. “Yeah, I’m sorry. Sometimes I forget how fast I am”, you said and playfully rolled your eyes at yourself which made her giggle again. Victory number four.
It wasn’t long until her parents arrived. Emily was back from the cafeteria and was sitting on a chair next to the bed, holding Claudia’s hand. After the initial shock to find their daughters in the ER, one of them hooked to a heart monitor, Dr. McKay stepped outside with them to give an update on Claudia’s condition.
When the first test came back, doctor McKay couldn’t find any anomalies at first, but something felt off. She ordered further blood tests and for her blood to be drawn every hour. She also ordered a CT which you tried your best to have her skip the line.
You were watching her closely for the rest of your shift. She had already been up to CT and you were now waiting on the scans. You and Emma were taking care of her in Central 6 so you could keep a close eye on her, even when you were out at the Hub.
The dad had left to bring Emily to his parents. You advised the mother to get herself a cup of coffee and a sandwich from the cafeteria, you would keep her company. At that point, your shift had already ended but you couldn’t bring yourself to go home and leave Claudia here. You knew you were overstepping a boundary you had set for yourself a long time ago.
Back in nursing school, they had always told you to keep a professional distance to the patients or it would break you. You had seen countless colleagues, doctors and nurses, succumbing to the emotional burden that the job brought with it. But you had always managed to dodge it. Not this time.
You let her color your empty Care Bear tattoo with one of the removable markers you always carried with you while instructing Emma on how to draw blood on a kid. As Claudia attested, you were very good at it, which made both of you laugh.
In the middle of Emma’s draw, Claudia suddenly got unconscious again, the monitors flaring all kinds of alarms and you sprung into action, calling over Dr. Ellis who had already started her night shift and had taken over for Dr. McKay.
They had to resuscitate her, even shock her a few times but she died. You couldn’t remember the last time you were in such a shock state. When Dr. Ellis called time of death, you stood next to the bed, your eyes on the flatline. Only faintly, you heard the screams and cries of Claudia’s mother that was held in the corner by Olive. You felt like your own knees were about to give in.
Even thought your colleagues offered to do it for you, you wouldn’t let anyone else take care of Claudia's body. You cleaned her up and brought her to the viewing room for family to say their goodbyes.
You stood in the corner with Dr. Ellis, watching her parents and grandparents hold Claudia’s little hand, barely able to stand, overwhelmed by their grief. Her sister Emily sat on the sofa at the back, staring straight ahead into nothing. You felt your vision getting blurry with tears.
With a low voice, you excused yourself, overwhelmed with your own feelings, and fled to the supply closet. You walked to the back and sank down to the floor, breathing heavily. It felt like someone was sitting on your chest. In your mind, Claudia’s face got switched with the one from your youngest sister and it was getting harder to breath. A heavy sob crawled its way up your lungs and erupted with a stream of tears.
You didn’t know how much time had passed but suddenly Jack crouched down in front of you. You barely noticed him, looking straight ahead to the floor, tears trickling down your wet cheeks.
Ellis told him what happened when he came back from trauma 1. He immediately rushed to the supply closet, knowing this was the only place you could be.
“Hey”, he almost whispered and gently put a hand on your knee. You had your knees pulled in and your arms wrapped around them.
“I heard what happened with the little girl in 6”, he continued. “Claudia”, you mumbled with a shaky voice, your eyes red and puffy from crying.
He sat down on the floor next to you and waited for you to speak. It was silent for a few minutes but he didn't rush you.
“It all went so fast”, you started and your voice was raspy. “The one minute she colored my tattoo and the next minute, she's...”, you turned your left arm to show him the unfinished drawing. A red line across your skin, down to your wrist from where her hand went limb as she had fainted.
“Oh god”, you covered your face with both of your hands and started sobbing uncontrollably.
You felt Jack's arms wrapping around you and being pulled against his chest. This started to feel all too familiar now, but always for really shitty reasons. Surprisingly, him being here didn’t make you embarrassed of your emotional break. You actually felt safe enough to let it out. Deep down, you were glad that you weren’t alone in here anymore. But you wouldn’t have wanted anyone else beside you. Just Jack.
He gave you a few minutes, listening to your sobs getting smaller and further apart until they stopped.
“Are you in therapy?”, Jack asked bluntly. You sat up again and looked at him a bit irritated as you wiped your eyes and cheeks. His question startled you a bit, even though it wasn’t unwarranted.
“I used to be when I was younger. And for the first few years on the job. Then I found a way to deal with it on my own. I’m in a good place”, you told him. It was hard to believe when he looked at your red eyes and the dark circles under them. In a Jack kind of way, he raised an eyebrow when he looked at you.
“I really am. Today was just…shitty. Really shitty”, you doubled down.
“It doesn’t hurt to check back in every once in a while. I do it with my therapist, too”, he told you and you were a bit surprised to hear him speak so openly about it. On the other hand, it explained a lot how he so professionally handled the daily business at the ED.
“Just some advice between friends”, he added in a nonchalant tone and nudged your shoulder with his.
You both turned to look ahead again with your backs against the wall. You let Jack’s words run through your head. “I might give her a call”, you said and looked down at your Care Bear tattoo.
Jack just nodded and sat with you for a few more minutes before he got back up. “I need to get back out there. Take as much time as you need in here. You’re off the clock anyway”, he shot you a shy smile and for a moment looked like he didn’t know what to do next. “I’ve been off the clock for hours”, you told him and took a deep breath.
“Are you okay? Can I leave you here alone in good conscience?”, Jack asked once more. “I’m okay. I’ll just take a few more minutes and I’m good to go”, you nodded and braved through a reassuring smile. Jack’s eyes scanned your face and then nodded hesitantly before he turned around and left the supply closet.
As soon as you heard the door click shut, you felt the tears dwell up again. You drew in a shaky breath, trying to control your emotions.
It was a really shitty day.
The next morning when you came in for your shift, Jack's still there from his night shift, finishing up his charts.
“Did you get some sleep?”, he asked as he spotted you coming towards the computers, your backpack hanging on your right shoulder. “Not really”, you said. When he looked up, he saw the dark circles under your eyes.
“You should take the day, I can talk to Dana. I'm sure she can find someone to cover for you”, he offered as he got up from the chair and took a step towards you. Almost out of reflex, he put a hand on your upper arm to comfort you.
“No, I fear if I leave now, I might not come back”, you told him and he looked a little surprised by your honest answer, but he understood.
“Getting back on the horse or however they say”, you shrugged your shoulders. “It's okay to take some time to grief, to reflect. Doesn't mean you’re giving up”, he reassured you and lightly squeezed your arm.
“Yeah? When's the last time you took some time to reflect?”, you asked with a small smile in the corner of your lips.
Even though it was the tiniest smile, he was feeling a little flutter in his chest. He blamed it on the 5 cups of coffee he had in the past 2 hours.
“I know a great spot on the roof for that”, he told you and put his hands in his pockets to keep himself from touching you, fearing it would raise some eyebrows from the nearby colleagues.
Your smile got a little bigger and so did the flutter in his chest.
“Thank you for yesterday. It meant a lot that you were there for me, Jack”, you told him and after a moment of hesitation, you hugged him.
It took him a second out of surprise before he hugged you back. This was the first time you had called him Jack, at least to his face.
“Of course”, he said and just a moment later you let go of him again and took a step back. Your eyes flickered up to the big clock on the wall.
“Shit, I'm getting late”, you said and felt nervous all of a sudden. You threw him one last tiny smile and walked around him towards the lockers. He looked after you until you had disappeared around the next corner.
When he turned back around, he found Dana looking at him from the nurse’s station, throwing him a look of "What's going on there?".
Jack sighed and walked over to her. Dana had just arrived for her shift and put her purse under the counter.
“Wanna tell me what that was?”, Dana asked him straight up, talking about the hug she had just witnessed and his longing stare. “She lost a kid yesterday”, Jack explained. “7 year old. One moment she's fine, talking, the next moment she's coding. They shocked her three times but she passed”, he continued.
“Shit”, Dana exhaled. “I'm gonna keep an eye on her today”, Dana reassured him, patting his upper arm and he nodded as a thank you.
A few days had passed since your horrific shift. You were working at one of the work stations on the North corridor, sitting at the computer and updating a patient’s chart.
“Do you want to, maybe, grab some food, together?”, Jack suggested as he appeared next to you, seemingly out of nowhere. “Yeah, sure, I am starving. And I could use the distraction”, you said while typing. You didn’t even look up from the screen. “No, I meant a proper dinner…with me?”, Jack clarified and the slight uncertainty in his voice made you look up.
It startled you a bit when you saw how serious his facial expression was. “Like a date?”, you asked in return. Jack’s mouth twitched a little bit, his brows furrowing for a second before his back straightened. “Yes, a date”, he said and nodded once.
“Can you call it a date if it’s between friends?”, you asked, a small smirk playing around your lips, thinking of his friendly therapy advice. “I’m not asking you as a friend”, Jack replied. “Just a few days ago, you said we were friends”, you countered. “You can be friends with someone and then you want to be more than friends”, he told you straight out.
You looked at him and blinked once, then twice, then a third time. “I would be down for drinks”, you presented him with a counter offer. “Why not dinner?”, Jack asked and shifted his weight on the arm that was placed on top of the little wall around the work station. “What’s wrong about drinks?”, you asked instead of answering. “A real date is dinner. And if it works out, drinks after”, he told you. “You sound a hundred years old right now”, you mocked him with a chuckle.
Jack tilted his head to the side, furrowing his brows. “If you don’t want to go, you don’t have to”, he pulled back his offer. “No, hey”, you basically jumped up from your seat and put a hand on his on the little wall.
“I would like to go on a date with you”, you lowered your voice as you clarified, quickly pulling back your hand from his, fearing someone might have seen you doing that. “But my first dates are always just drinks. That’s my rule”, you told him.
“I haven’t had a first date in years”, Jack told you. A soft smile appeared on your lips. Only now you realized how nervous he actually was about this.
“Ask me again, Jack”, you told him, a softer expression on your face. He was still getting used to you calling him Jack. He liked the way his name sounded from your lips.
“Y/N, would you like to go on a date with me? Just drinks”, he asked again, a smirk on his lips. “Yes, Jack. I would love to”, you answered him and when his smile got bigger, so did yours.
“Looks like you got yourself a date, Dr. Abbot”, you mentioned and winked at him before you sat down to look up another patient’s chart.
Warnings: use of Y/N, a little jealous Jack, a lot of flirting
Summary: It's been a little while since your very bad date and you started to feel like yourself again. Schooling Ogilvie about his bedside manners was only a small part of it. When an old friend from your last place of work came in as a temp nurse, Jack couldn't help but feel a little jealous about how well you two got along...
a/n: Don't we just love a little jealous Jack? I put a little nod to one of Shawn's previous characters in there. Can you spot it?

It’s been two months since your assault. You ended up taking three weeks off because of your ankle. Your black eye was gone before you came back to work. People had asked you how you’ve been on your first day back but after that, everybody treated you the same, which you were very thankful for.
As for Jack, he didn’t treat you any differently than before your injuries, as well. It shouldn’t be a big deal, but it was to you. He kept flirting with you. He had turned it down a little bit, though, testing the waters which you were thankful for. He let you lead the way and it started with glances over the shoulder before you were back to your flirty comments. You might not have hooked up in the supply closet since but that didn’t mean you weren’t thinking about it.
You had spent the 4th of July weekend back home in New York with your siblings. Your mother was off with her newest boyfriend. As much fun as it was seeing your family again, it turned out to be an even bigger luck when you came back to PTMC and found out about the hacker scare and their little time travel back to analog days. You were not sad that you missed out on that.
But by not working the 4th of July shift, you had missed Dr. Robby finally going off on his sabbatical, leaving the ED with the new attending Dr. Al-Hashimi.
When you came back about two days after that horror shift, they told you about Louie passing and it hit you harder than you would have expected. All your colleagues that knew him even longer than you were pretty shaken up. It was hard losing one of your regulars, especially someone as lovely as Louie.
About a week later, you worked a mixed shift where you work half your hours in the day shift and half your hours in the night shift. You clocked in at 1 PM and worked alongside your typical day shift colleagues and the new student doctors that always started in July.
Every year there was at least one gunner, a know-it-all that got on the nerves of everybody. A med student that was so sure of themselves, believing they already knew everything they needed to know to be a good doctor, but most of the time lack the simplest human decency. And this year, this gunner was called James Ogilvie.
The 4th of July shift might have knocked some sense into this kid’s head, but he still had a long, long way to go. Gunners didn’t scare you, they might have when you were starting out, but you’ve been in the business too long now. But something about this guy got under your skin more than you would have liked.
You were alone with the student doctor as three ambulances had come at the same time and trauma 1 and 2 as well as Central 6 occupied most doctors in the ED.
The woman in the hospital bed in front of you looked over at you for help as you took her blood pressure. She looked irritated and rightfully so. Ogilvie was his obnoxious self, correcting even the patient when she was describing her symptoms and answered his questions. Or tried to.
“What student doctor Ogilvie meant to ask was, is there any history of you fainting in the past? Out of nowhere perhaps?”, you tried to correct him as politely as possible. The gunner was gunner-ing at his finest today.
“I know what I meant, nurse Y/N”, he said and raised his voice at you. The way he accentuated the word nurse was clearly meant to put you in your place.
“Mrs. Evens, was there any history of fainting in the past?”, he repeated your question, focused on the patient. Mrs. Evens looked over at you, kind of intimidated. You just gave her a little nod to answer his question.
“When you brought her up to CT, I need you to take another blood sample of the patient in 21 and change the dressing in 17”, he told you as he put in the order for the CT via the computer in the room. He then proceeded to just walk out, no pleases, no thank yous. You swallowed your anger down for the moment.
“Alright, Mrs. Evens, let’s take you up to CT”, you smiled at the elderly woman in front of you and put up the railing on her hospital bed.
After you had brought her up to CT to rule out any head trauma, you found Ogilvie at the patients’ board by the Hub.
“Ogilvie”, you said with a stern voice, a little louder than it might have been necessary, which not only caused him to turn around to you, but to make everyone close to the Hub pay attention as well. Like Dr. Abbot, who was updating a patient’s chart on the other side of the nurses’ station, a little early for his shift tonight.
“I know you’re still new to this and it’s been a long shift, for all of us, but let me give you some advice”, you said to him and put your hands on your hips. Mostly to keep yourself from slapping the stupid look off his face.
“Don’t you ever raise your voice towards me or any other nurse again, let alone in front of a patient. And once you earn that MD at the end of your name, that doesn’t change anything about that. Are we clear?”, you told him and he listened to you with big eyes, looking more scared with every second. He looked around for support and his eyes landed on Dr. Abbot.
“You better answer her”, he only said and looked back down at the chart. “Y-yes, we’re clear”, he said and swallowed hard.
“Great. Now, let’s start this again. Student doctor Ogilvie, would you like me to change the dressing and take another blood sample of the patients in South 17 and 21?”, you offered in a more neutral tone.
“That would be very nice, t-thank you”, he answered with a shaky voice, clinging to the iPad in his hands. “Good, you got it”, you said and patted his upper arm, maybe a little too hard.
When you walked past him, you found Princess smiling at you and holding her hand up for a fist bump as you walked past her towards the South wing. You definitely weren’t the only one annoyed by this young doctor.
“That kid needs another lesson in bedside manners, towards patients AND colleagues”, you said to Dr. Al-Hashimi as you stopped at her side before you continued walking.
“You got it”, she just nodded, a light smile on her face. “Dr. Whitaker”, she said when she spotted him and nodded towards Ogilvie who was still standing in front of the Hub, looking a bit lost.
“That was awesome”, Joy said and had a big smile on her face. Whitaker took a deep sigh and walked over to the student doctor and motioned to follow him towards the next patient.
“We don’t want to upset the nurses; they’re practically running the place. We just try to stay out of their way as best as possible”, Whitaker told him as they walked. Jack smiled to himself as he heard the conversation fading out in the background.
A little while later, Dr. Abbot found you at one of the standing computers in South outside the rooms, updating the charts of the patients in 17 and 21.
“That poor kid still looks like he’s seen a ghost”, Jack commented as he stopped next to you. “He deserved it”, you stated and kept looking at the screen.
“Oh, no doubt about that”, Jack agreed with you. “Remind me to never get on your bad side”, he lowered his voice as he leaned in a little.
When you looked over, he had a dirty smirk on his face. “As sexy as it was”, he added and stood up straight again.
“You of all people could use a little spanking”, you joked. Jack leaned in again for a moment. “Promise?”, he whispered.
You had to bite down on your bottom lip to keep yourself from laughing out loud, but you couldn’t do anything about the redness that was flushing your cheeks. “Go away”, you told him and looked back at the screen.
Jack walked back to the Hub but not without shooting you another smile over his shoulder.
Before Whitaker took off after his shift, he came back to the Hub to find you. “Hey, Y/N, I just wanted to say I’m sorry for Ogilvie. I talked to him and it will not happen again. We really appreciate all the work you and the other nurses do here and how you help us doctors out all the time”, he told you and looked like a nervous little school boy.
“Thank you, Dr. Whitaker, that is very nice of you. Now, don’t make me fall in love with you, I’m not ready to be a cougar”, you joked and startled him with your words which made him even cuter.
Perlah hid her smile behind her hand as she came around the counter to walk over to a patient. “Oh, I-I didn’t mean it like that…I just wanted to…”, he stammered and his cheeks turning red. “Good god, Dr. Whitaker, I’m just joking”, you chuckled. “Okay, Imma get going now”, he said, still a bit startled and tired. “You do that. Goodnight”, you sent him off into his well-deserved day off tomorrow.
Right when the night shift started, Lena came up to the Hub with a guy in nurse’s scrubs. A male temp nurse joining only for the night shift as he's subbing in because of a staff shortage. You didn’t see him right away as you were tending to a patient in South 22.
“Andy?”, you asked surprised as you came to the nurses’ station. “Y/N, hey”, he greeted you with a hug. “Oh my god, what are you doing here?”, you said with a bright smile and pulled back from the hug. “I'm helping you guys out tonight”, he explained with an equally bright smile.
“Andy to the rescue, of course”, you joked and nudged his upper arm. “I guess, you guys know each other?”, Perlah asked. Princess was right next to her, looking very interested at the new, temporary hire.
“Hey, Olive, can you page Neuro for a consult in Central 11?”, Jack came up to the counter, talking to one of the night shift nurses. Over her shoulder, he noticed the new guy standing next to you. Way too close next to you.
“We used to work together at Bellvue from time to time”, Andy explained at the other end of the Hub to the little group around him. “He worked the day shifts mostly but took some night's as well”, you explained your connection. “Were you guys close?”, Perlah asked a follow-up question. “We had fun”, Andy said and looked at you with a smile like he was hinting at something.
“Oh? Do tell”, Princess inquired further. You rolled your eyes with a smile. “You make it sound weird”, you said to Andy and shook your head. When your gaze wandered, you caught Jack’s eyes on you, his jaw looking kind of tense.
“We had some crazy patients at the night shifts. Y/N was always the best one to take care of them. Gave some a good ass whooping”, he laughed and focused your attention back to the conversation in front of you. His comment made Princess and Emma giggle along with him. Andy was always very charismatic and a real flirt. That's why you two got along really well from the start. But nothing ever actually happened between the two of you.
“You learn that pretty quickly if you wanna survive the nights”, you down-played it. “Well, you were really good at it. We gave her the nickname the whacko-whisperer”, Andy told everybody.
“Oh, we experienced her skills first hand”, Perlah commented and threw you a wink. “Whacko-whisperer at it again, huh?”, Andy asked admiringly. “I only twisted his arm, he was fine”, you shrugged it off. “And so was Princess”, Perlah added. “Thank you again for that”, Princess said. “Oh please, that is ancient history by now”, you told her. “But any time, we gotta look out for each other”, you said, put your arm around her shoulders and pulled her in for a moment.
“Since you already know each other so well, why don't you show your buddy around and put him to use”, Lena broke off the little circle and got everyone back to work.
“Come on, I'll show you where you can put your stuff”, you said and walked around the nurses’ station, Andy quick to follow you.
“So, this is where you ended up, huh? Still working nights?”, he asked as you two started walking. “Actually, I work day shifts now. I just throw one or two in there to not lose my edge”, you joked.
Jack didn't like that he wasn't able to hear what you were talking about anymore. And he liked it even less when he watched Andy put his arm around your shoulders as you walked down the hall towards the lockers.
“New guy?”, Dr. Shen asked as he followed Jack’s eyes. “Temp nurse”, Jack answered and it took him a second or two to look away. Especially as he watched you laugh with that guy, putting your hand on his upper arm.
“What kind of name is Andy for a grown-up?”, Jack mocked, “It's a nickname, short for Andrew mostly”, Shen explained in a dry tone before he took a sip of his Dunkin’ iced coffee. Jack threw him a look before he grabbed the iPad and walked over to the next patient.
When Jack came around the nurse’s station later that night, he saw you sitting at the computer, updating a chart. He looked around, happy that your guy friend was nowhere to be seen.
“The patient in North 2 needs his feet cleaned and toe nails cut before we can treat the infection”, Dr. Ellis came up to the counter and unintentionally cut between Jack and you. “What are you looking at me for?”, you asked her. “Because I am asking you to do it”, she clarified. “What about Olive?”, you asked hopeful. “She’s helping Matteo. And we need to get going to free up the bed”, she reminded you. “Alright, I’ll do it when I’m done here”, you said, nodding at the computer in front of you and pulled a face of disgust. “Thank you”, Dr. Ellis said and moved on to the next patient.
“Not a fan of feet?”, Jack asked and slid over so he was standing in front of you. You looked up and immediately got a little bit excited to see him.
“I’m not too fond of feet that aren’t my own”, you told him and saved the file you were working on. “So, the fact that you have one less for me to worry about is actually kind of attractive”, you mentioned.
“Are you flirting with me, Y/N?”, Jack asked with a smirk, leaning forward on the counter. “I flirt with everyone, makes work more fun”, you told him with a wink. “Are you flirting with your New York buddy as well?”, he asked and he hated that despite his best efforts to sound casual, it didn’t work.
“Back at Bellevue? Yes, I did”, you told him and got up from your seat. As you walked along the counter, he mirrored you on the other side of it until you were standing face to face.
“But I don't just hook up with anyone, if that’s what you’re asking”, you added in a whispered tone as you stood in front of him, reminding him about your little meet-up in the supply closet which by now seemed ages ago. “My stress level needs to be at least an 8.5 or higher”, you added.
You knew pretty much from the first time you had met Jack that he was a flirt just like you, but the way he had acted right after your little meet-up, he also didn't seem to just hook-up with everybody. At least, not at the hospital.
“How's your stress level now?”, he asked, sounding very innocently to someone who might just walk by and pick up on your conversation, but you saw the little glimmer in his eyes, noticed the eye contact that was held just a little bit too long.
“Comfortable 5, Dr. Abbot”, you told him with an innocent smile. “Good to hear that”, he lightly nodded and let his eyes wander over the ED, another smirk playing around his lips.
“If anything changes, you’ll know where to find me”, he told you. He heard the automatic doors opening and the familiar sounds of a gurney being pushed in.
“Elbow deep in somebody’s guts in trauma 1?”, you asked with a smirk. “That’s the one”, he winked at you before he walked over to the EMTs.
“What have we got here?”, he asked and doctor mode was back on.

Summary: After your little meet-up with Jack in the supply closet you feel the need to give Tinder another try to prove to yourself that it was just sex. The date takes a dark turn which brought you to the ED not as a nurse but as a patient...
a/n: This is kinda dark and I beg you to read the warnings before reading! I (gladly) have no personal experience with physical abuse and I apologzie if I got anything wrong. As horrible as the incident is, it is an important step in Jack's and your relationship.

It’s been over a week since your little supply closet hook-up with Jack and you couldn’t stop thinking about it. Your body maybe got out of that room, but your mind sure didn’t.
If you were honest, it scared you a little bit. You weren’t looking for anything, especially not at your place of work but Dr. Jack Abbot kind of crept up on you.
You were fairly certain that he was not feeling the same in any way, he was just a flirt like you.
You had to get your mind off of him and decided to give Tinder another try. A date with some guy, any guy really, would help you get your head on straight again and Dr. Abbot out of it.
“Look at you”, Dana commented when you came up to the Hub after your shift. You had brought a dress and some make-up in the morning and now had gotten ready in the women’s bathroom, trying your best not to look like someone who had just worked a 12-hours-shift.
You took a little spin to show off your outfit to her and some fellow nurses that were at the station.
“Can I go like that?”, you asked her. It’s been a while since you had gotten dressed up and felt out of practice. “You look like a doll”, Dana reassured you.
“I’m kinda late already but I need to check if I put the bloodwork in for central 8”, you told her as you quickly logged into one of the standing computers close to the nurse’s station.
That gave Jack a chance to take in your appearance as he walked into the ED from the ambulance bay. He had to look twice because you looked so different but at the same time the most like yourself. He noticed you had put on some make-up, nothing dramatic. Your hair was open, falling over your back and shoulders. You were absolutely gorgeous.
“Whoa, Y/N, nice dress”, Dr. Ellis commented as she walked past you. “Thanks”, you said and as you looked up, noticing Jack looking at you from the other side of the Hub. With a little bit of joy, you noticed that he was looking you up and down repeatedly.
“Who’s the lucky guy?”, Dana asked you. “A guy called Rick”, you answered her and logged off the computer again. “Hey, don’t spoil us with all the information”, she joked as you didn’t continue talking about the guy you were about to meet. You put your purse on your other shoulder, fidgeting with the strap. You were a little nervous, to be honest. You hadn’t been on a date in a quite some time.
“You guys have fun. Just don’t be late for your shift tomorrow”, she told you with a wink. “Let’s see if he makes it past 10 PM”, you told her and pulled a face. “Bye, guys”, you waved at the group and walked out of the hospital.
Even though you were about to go on a date with another man, you were kind of happy that Jack was around to not only see you in your dress but also now knows that you were going on dates.
God, you had only slept together once and at work of all places, but still…you didn’t know how to explain it.
A few hours later, close to 11 PM, the night shift got a call that EMT was bringing in a man and a woman, both banged up pretty good. As the doors of the ambulance bay opened, Jack was walking over, putting on a new set of gloves, Dr. Ellis right behind him.
“Male, 38, trauma to the throat. Lacerations to the face, scalp laceration to the back of the head. Unconscious when we arrived, started to come to when we pulled in”, the EMT gave Jack the stats. The man on the gurney was moaning in pain, not fully conscious yet. His breathing was impaired due to the mentioned trauma to the throat. “What happened?”, Jack asked. “Witnesses said some guys in front of a bar beat him up after he assaulted the woman he was with. Police should be here any minute to take their statements”, the EMT answered him. “Get him to Trauma 1”, Jack ordered and felt a wave of disgust washing over him. He had to remind himself that he had taken an oath to help people.
“Shit! Y/N?”, he heard Dr. Ellis say behind him and turned around. He had to look twice to actually recognize you. Your face was bruised, dried blood under your nose, parts of your dress were ripped, the left strap of your dress loosely hanging off your shoulder.
For a moment, everything stopped. To see you in this condition did something to his brain. He froze in his spot.
“I'm fine”, you said and put your hands up but winced immediately due to the pain. Jack’s doctor instincts kicked back in and he came towards your gurney.
“Female, Y/A, victim of assault. BP is 113 over 90. Contusion to the ribs, sprained ankle on the right. She's got a black eye, laceration to the lip and eyebrow, first concussion assessment was negative but it looked like her head had been slammed against the headboard of the car”, the EMT listed all your injuries they had detected so far.
Jack grabbed the handle of the gurney in a tight grip, his knuckles turning white.
“He slammed your head against the headboard?”, Jack looked at you with big eyes, his voice stern. You looked up at him only for a second, not able to hold his eye contact.
“Fine, my ass”, he mumbled but you heard him. “Get her to Central 10”, he said to Maggie, one of the night shift nurses. “I want him away from Y/N as far as possible”, he added. “And from me”, he thought to himself.
“I can walk myself”, you countered as you hated being the patient. You felt embarrassed about the state you were in. Being wheeled in your place of work, you felt everybody’s eyes on you. You feared if you looked around too much, you would see nothing but pity and it made your stomach turn.
“You're gonna keep your ass on that gurney until I say otherwise”, Jack commanded and motioned Maggie to take you to C 10.
“Get Dr. Shen to assist Dr. Ellis, I’m with Y/N”, he told another nurse and followed your gurney that was being rolled down the hall over to your room.
The room was immediately filled with three other nurses and a resident. You knew the drill but never from this side. They checked your pupils while you were connected to a heart monitor.
They cut the rest of your dress off your body to check for more injuries and you had never felt more vulnerable. And Jack of all people had to be your doctor for this.
You kept staring at the ceiling, waiting for the initial examination to be over. Out of the corner of your eyes, you saw Jack throwing you a look when he saw the big bruise on your ribs, starting to get darker by the minute.
“Any nausea?”, Dr. Wilk, the resident, asked you. “No”, you answered quickly, still looking up.
“I’m going to use the ultrasound on your ribs to look for internal bleeding”, Jack told you and you just nodded, swallowing down the tears that welled up.
“Do we have any SANE on call tonight?”, Jack asked into the room and your head whipped over to him. “I don’t need that”, you said with a stern voice. “You’re sure?”, Jack asked and his eyes were scanning your face. “He didn’t get that far”, you answered and turned your face back to the ceiling when you laid back down.
Your head was a mess. You felt embarrassed, intimidated, sad, angry and so much more. And to your surprise the most embarrassed you felt about the fact that Jack had seen you like this. Your immediate thoughts were “Shit, from now on he will only ever see me as a victim, the flirting will stop and he will not want me anymore” which angered you even more that those were your concerns at the moment.
You felt the coldness of the ultrasound gel on your skin and hissed when Jack applied little pressure with the head of the machine. “Sorry”, he mumbled and tried to be as careful as possible as he moved it over your ribs and stomach.
“No internal bleeding”, he concluded after a few moments. “Olive, call ahead to Radiology and CT so she can skip the line. And put a rush on her bloodwork”, Jack ordered.
He leaned over you as he took a look at the small cut over your eyebrow and lip. You felt his glove covered fingertips on your skin, turning your head gently. “The cut is not deep, you won’t need any stitches”, he concluded. “Great”, you said dryly, still concentrating on the ceiling.
“When you come back down, Police should be here so you could give your statement”, Jack told you as he walked over to the computer to update your chart and put in the orders for the scans. You just nodded. You couldn’t bring yourself to look at him yet. You didn’t want to see the pity and how there would be nothing else left.
When you came back down to your room in the ED after your scans, both doors were closed and the curtain drawn to give you some privacy. Everybody had left the room and you felt somewhat alone for the first time since you came here tonight and couldn’t hold back the tears anymore. You let out a big sob and your whole face hurt. You pressed a hand on your mouth to stifle your sounds and winced when your fingers touched your split lip.
You felt a mixture of pity for yourself and annoyance towards your situation. And anger, so much anger.
You took a few deep breaths, shaky at first. You needed a plan, plans help. When the police were here, you will give them your statement. You were sure there were some eye-witness reports from the scene as some other guys had pulled him off you.
You were interrupted by the door being opened and a second later, Jack came around the curtain.
“How are you feeling, Y/N?”, Jack asked and stood by the foot of your bed. If he saw your red eyes, he wasn’t commenting on it. “About as good as I look”, you told him. He only nodded but he was glad you were making little jokes again.
“Let’s see what your scans say”, he said and stepped over to the computer in the corner of the room, logged in and pulled up your CT and radiology scans.
“Okay, looks like some bruised ribs, no internal bleeding as we saw earlier and a sprained ankle on the right. You got a small concussion, probably got some headaches, but we’re gonna give you something for that”, he told you and looked over. You nodded slightly at the mention of the headaches.
He came back over to your bed and when you looked at him, you were relieved to find his demeanor normal, doctor-like, no signs of pity like you had feared.
You heard the door opening again and the next moment, Olive was coming around the curtain. “The police are here for your statement”, she told you. You nodded in agreement and sat up straighter in your bed. She gave you a small smile and walked back out.
“I can stay with you if you like”, Jack offered. “No”, you shook your head. “Are you sure? It’s no problem”, he offered again. “I am sure”, you doubled down. Before he could offer again, a female and male police officer came into your room, pulling back the curtain a bit and stood by your bedside.
“I’ll be right outside if you need me”, he assured you and unwillingly stepped outside. He stopped right outside your room, just where you couldn’t see him. The door hadn’t shut fully and Jack was able to hear parts of your statement.
Normal date at first, both were drinking…you didn’t hit it off with him, wanted to go home…he said he would take you but tried something in the car still on the parking lot of the bar…you had pushed him off, told him no, he was getting angry and aggressive…fist to the ribs…head on the dashboard…kneed him in the testicles…got out of the car, he slammed you into the driver’s door…your elbow hit his throat by accident…next thing you know he was pulled off you and slammed on the parking lot…three guys were on him, someone called 911.
With every word Jack heard from your statement, his breath quickened, a ringing in his ear. He couldn’t help it, he saw red. He slammed his fist against the wall and took off towards South 19 where they had put the guy that had come in with you.
Jack charged through the ED, his hands closed to fists. Dr. Ellis spotted him from the Hub. “Fuck”, she commented. Dr. Shen looked up as well and both came rushing around the counter, running after their attending to hold him back.
“Hey asshole”, Jack called out when he wasn’t far from the patient’s room door and the guy looked up. When he saw Jack coming towards him with an angry face, body tense, he looked at him with big eyes and scooted back in his bed. “You like beathing up women, huh? How about you try someone your own size?”, Jack yelled at him before Shen and Ellis were able to reach him.
“Jack, come on”, Dr. Shen said and tried to pull him out of the room, but to no avail. With the help of two security guards, they brough Jack out to the hallway again. Jack was looking at that guy with a death glare.
“Jack”, Dr. Ellis tried to get through to him. “Dr. Abbot!”, she said again, louder this time. He finally looked at her, his breathing rapid and heavy. “Take a lap”, she advised him with a stern look.
He took a deep breath and finally took off, not before shooting that guy one last look. He walked towards the elevators, ignoring the stares his performance had earned him. He went up to the roof to take a breather.
Jack had come back to your room every now and then during the rest of his shift, checking on you. You had not witnessed his outbreak but one of the nurses had told you about it. You still had no idea, though, that he had heard your statement and that that was the reason for it.
After his shift, Jack had come to your room and found you asleep. He sat down in the visitor’s chair and watched you sleep. Your left eye was now pretty swollen and shone in the brightest of colors. A crust had formed on your lip where it was split. His eyes wandered to the monitor you were hooked up to. Everything looked good, considering the circumstances.
He was looking out for a colleague…and maybe a friend. That’s what he kept telling himself all night. But the feelings he had inside him…He really liked his colleagues and was very protective of them, of everybody. And men hitting women? That was a no brainer and he was rightfully mad, just like everybody else would be. But still…It all felt a little too intense, he was bothered a bit too much for what he would normally feel.
And it didn’t help that you looked so small in your hospital bed, finally finding some sleep. He felt his eyelids getting heavier and heavier to the monotone sound of your breathing and the constant beep of the monitors in the background. He must have fallen asleep because the next moment he was jerking up when Dr. Javati came in and pulled back the curtain.
“Dr. Abbot? You’re still here?”, she asked surprised. “Yeah, must be”, he said with a raspy, sleepy voice and cleared his throat as he sat up in the chair. His back hated him already. His leg hurt as he hadn’t taken off the prosthetic yet.
When he looked over to your bed, he found your eyes on him. Well, one eye. You didn’t say anything but Dr. Javadi had taken the words right out of your mouth.
“Morning, Y/N, I’m here to check up on you after the handover from the nightshift”, Dr. Javadi told you, visibly irritated that Dr. Abbot was still here. You couldn’t blame her, you felt the same, but probably for different reasons.
“I hate being the patient”, you sighed and winced as you sat up in your bed. Dr. Javadi checked the monitor, took your blood pressure, checked your pupils again and asked you some questions before noting it all down in your chart.
“When can I go home?”, you asked impatiently. “Most assault victims stay in the ER...”, Dr. Javadi said. “I'm nobodies’ victim”, you cut her off in a harsh tone.
“Alright”, Jack cut in between and got up from his seat. “I'm sorry, I didn't mean, I'm...”, Javadi stuttered. “Thank you, Dr. Javati, I think we're good for now”, Jack told her in a calm voice and she looked like she couldn't wait to get out of your room.
You took a deep breath and your ribs ached. “Shit, I should apologize to her”, you said and rubbed your forehead.
“She’s fine. We have crazier patients than you. She’s gotta learn somehow”, Jack waved it off and came over to your bed. “How’s your head?”, he asked and checked the monitor himself again.
“Pounding”, you answered him. “You’re BP is a bit high. I will get you something for the pain”, he said and left your room. You noticed that he was limping a little bit. He must have not taken off his leg yet.
Before you could think about it too much, he came back in with a pill and a cup of water. “Here you go”, he handed you the medicine and the water. Drinking was a bit ungraceful due to your lip, but you managed.
When you handed the cup back to him, your fingers touched. You felt it immediately. “Thanks”, you quickly said and played over it. He looked like nothing happened when he sat the cup down. Well, maybe for him, nothing did happen.
“Why did you not go home after your shift?”, you bluntly asked him. He looked startled by your question for a moment. “Uhm, I…”, he started but got interrupted by Dr. Robby coming into your room.
“Hey, I just heard, how are you doing?”, he asked when he found you in your bed, his face a mask of concern. As a day shift nurse, he felt responsible for you, on the clock or not. He looked slightly irritated to find Jack by your side, but quickly focused back on you.
“Date gone bad, that's all”, you shrugged your shoulders and winced again. “Date?”, he asked, his eyes big. “Did you already make a report with the police?”, Robby asked and looked at your chart after a quick glance at the monitors you were hooked up to.
“Yes”, you nodded and let your annoyed mood shine through. Dr. Robby, the newest member to the Y/N-pity club.
“I made her make a statement last night”, Jack said, still standing next to your bed. “She got in during my shift”, he added. Robby threw him a look that lasted just a second too long.
“And why are you still here? Didn't your shift end 2 hours ago?”, Robbie asked as he studied your chart. “Just wanted to make sure she was okay”, he answered in an unbothered tone. “Okay”, Robbie just commented.
“If you need anything, let us know. And please take as much time off as you need”, he told you. “Could everyone please stop babying me? It makes me even more sick”, you rolled your eyes like a moody teenager.
“You've got 2 bruised ribs, a sprained ankle, light concussion and you can't see out of your left eye”, Jack stated your injuries. “So?”, you mouthed off. “So, you're gonna take it easy. Doctor's orders”, Robby said and finally left your room again.
“How long are you planning to stay?”, you turned your head to look at Jack who was still in your room. For a second, you hoped he would follow Robby out.
“Aren't you late for nude yoga or something?”, you managed to joke even though the dry tone in your voice did not indicate that.
“Already missed sunrise, I'm gonna do it tomorrow”, he shrugged it off and pulled the chair closer to your bed before he sat down. “What are you doing?”, you asked him, but he ignored you.
“Are you okay?”, he asked. “I wish everybody would stop asking me that”, you huffed and threw your head back. Your head was pounding like crazy, just like your swollen eye, the medicine not yet working.
“Are you okay?”, he asked again, same calm tone like before, not thrown off by your tone. “Stop”, you said and your voice started to shake. The tough-girl front crumbling as you felt a lump starting to form in your throat and your eyes burning with tears.
“Are you okay?”, he asked again, looking at you with compassion but without pity. And that was the last straw that broke you.
Your "no" was barely audible before you started crying. You covered your face with your hands and it hurt. Everything hurt. Your face, your ribs, your hands, your heart. You thought the little cry you head last night would have been enough, but there was just too much emotion that still needed to come out. Hearing all your injuries being listed again and again, slowly realizing what had happened to you, everybody asking you if you were okay, which you clearly weren’t, it was all too much.
You felt Jack wrap his arms around you gently and carefully as he sat down on the edge of your bed. You put your head against his chest and just let the tears flow, getting all the pain and frustration out of your system. You didn’t think you would let him hug you, but being held by someone you realized you trusted, being the one who’s getting cared for and looked after for a change…It started to heal something in you again, slowly.
Without saying another word, he just held you. And it made everything a little bit better.
warnings: use of the word ‘kid’, afab, unprotected p in v, a touch of somno at the beginning, jacks just filthy tbh
You’re on your stomach, his keys in the door. It’s a little earlier than usual for him to be home, you’d usually be awake on the couch with a coffee waiting for him wearing that perfect little smile, but this morning you’re face down in the pillows, hair spread all over and in a t-shirt and panties still.
Jack smiles at you softly from his place against the bedroom doorframe. The gentle morning sun spilling over your beautiful feature warmly as he walks over, dropping his bag before brushing hair off your face and kissing your forehead. His big hand rubs your back before slowly drifting down to your soft plush ass, squeezing gently. He sees your face scrunch up a little and chuckles to himself before he’s moving to the bed.
He’s already peeled his clothes off as he crawls over you, hovering over your back and dropping himself to his forearms by your head. He starts grinding his hardening cock into your ass, making you groan a little in sleep still into your pillow. He moves your hair off the back of your neck and kisses it gently.
You finally stir with a soft “Jackie?”. Making him smile against your skin and bring his hips down harder. “Yeah, jus’ me kid” he whispers into your ear, you can feel him tugging off your panties swiftly. You whimper softly, opening your eyes and looking over your shoulder to look at him. He’s looking at your wetting pussy.
He moves his cock with his hand to slide between your thighs, fucking them gently with a groan into your neck. You sigh dreamily into the pillow, eyes falling shut again. “Just need to use your pretty hole a little, you don’t mind do you baby?” He whispers filthy into your hair, making you shake your head and whimper as his tip catches on your clit.
He’s pushing into you slowly, lips attached to the side of your neck while he grunts into it. You’re all sighs into your pillow, fingers squeezing at it, muttering his name. “Should’ve known you’d be ready for me, always ready for your Jack hmm kid?” He’s breathing warmly against your skin making you whimper and nod as he sets a pace.
You can feel his balls slapping against your clit as he groans against your back, forehead starting to sweat as he speeds his hips up. “Just needed my sweet little girl all night, couldn’t stop thinking bout’ you.” He’s panting against your warm skin, hips snapping up one final time as you clench around him, both coming.
He stays buried inside you for a while, body weight on your back and you can feel his chest rising and falling against your back. You can hear the birds chirping and soft distant sirens of the morning. He’s finally pulling out of you and turning to face you. You do the same, smiling at him and leaning up to give him a proper kiss for the first time.
“Good morning” he’s smiling against your mouth, making you giggle and nod “Good morning” you whisper back, kissing him softly again.

previous part next part
You switched shifts with one of the night shift nurses to help her out for her anniversary with her husband and now found yourself working a whole shift with Dr. Abbot. That could be very interesting.
“Y/N, working overtime?”, Dr. Ellis asked you as you came up the hallway from the lockers. “Nope, rolling with you guys tonight”, you told her as you stopped next to Lena, the night shift’s charge nurse, who was sitting at one of the computers at the main nurse’s station. “Oh, wanna see how the night crawlers work?”, she said and leaned on the top of the counter.
“The what now?”, you asked confused. “Abbot’s nickname for us, he loves stuff like that”, Shen came up next to Ellis. “Aha”, you asked and looked at Lena, who just smiled at the screen, while you sat down in the chair next to her.
“Night shift, listen up”, Dr. Abbot came over and huddled with his night shift doctors, getting them up to speed on what the day shift had left for them and had some words of encouragement for the next 12 hours.
“Hooha!”, they ended their huddle and it made you jump in your seat. “Cute huddle, Dr. Abbot. Do you give a locker room speech at half-time, too?”, you asked him mockingly as he approached the counter. Lena had left to take care of something.
“Y/N? Missing nights already? To what do we owe the pleasure?”, he asked instead of getting de-railed by your comment. “I switched with Abby. Her anniversary is tonight”, you told him and typed something into your computer. “How selfless of you”, he said and grabbed one of the digital charts from the station.
“I just hope they’re having a good night and she’s getting some. At least one of us should have fun”, you said more to yourself but still out loud. You looked up after a moment. “Sorry, that was meant to only happen in here”, you said to him and pointed at your head. You covered your mouth with your hand for a big yawn. “Haven’t worked nights in a while”, you mentioned. Jack smiled and looked down at the chart.
The phone rang and you picked up. “PTMC”, you said and listened to the caller on the other end. “ETA?”, you asked and Jack’s ears pricked up. “Thanks”, you said and hung up.
“Car accident, 3 victims. One unconscious, possible DOA, one with severe chest trauma and DUI. 5 minutes out”, you told him and got up from your seat. “Ellis, Shen, on me”, he said and you walked ahead to trauma 1 to see if it was ready and then over to trauma 2.
“How long until you’re done here? We got three incoming, traffic accident”, you asked the doctor’s working in there. “About to go up to surgery”, Dr. Garcia told you and put up the rails on the bed. “Great”, you said and held open the doors for them to wheel the patient out.
“Esme? We need a quick one”, you called over head of sanitation and she grabbed two colleagues on the way over and got to work to get the room ready.
It was a hectic start to your shift but it had the nice effect that you were pretty awake now. Nothing better than a little adrenaline to start the night.
You thought it would take longer to get back into the night rhythm but it was second nature to you. And you had only left the night shift at Bellevue three months ago.
You took a seat at the Hub and pulled up the supply inventory. You heard Dr. Abbot yell some commands from trauma 1 and looked up. You had to admit, seeing him in action was pretty hot. Like everyone here, he really knew what he was doing and seeing someone so in their element was always intriguing.
You leaned forward and watched him work, absentmindedly chewing on your bottom lip. Jack looked up and locked eyes with you for a second. You snapped back to reality and turned back to the computer screen a bit startled.
“Y/N? They need you in South 16”, Lena called for you. “Yes”, you answered her and got up to walk over.
You helped Dr. Ellis by taking some vitals of the patient. You looked up just at the same time Jack walked past the room on his way to the next patient and he smirked at you when he caught you looking. You bit down on the inside of your cheek to keep yourself from smiling.
A little later, you found Dr. Abbot at one of the standing computers, putting in some notes. You decided to walk over there and check on the supply cart that was parked next to it.
“Great job in trauma 1 before, Dr. Abbot”, you said without looking at him. His head came up behind the screen and you could feel his eyes on you. “Thanks”, he just said. “I see the hems of your sleeves work overtime as well”, you commented as you walked past him way too close and didn’t hide your smile this time.
“Thanks for noticing”, he said and turned around to watch you walk away. “Oh, I notice everything, Dr. Abbot”, you replied and shot him a flirty look over your shoulder.
You forgot how fun night shifts could be. The vibe was just different, in a weird way looser and freer, lower inhibitions because it felt like the night time threw a protective shield over everything. Almost like, what happened in the night shift, stayed in the night shift.
Like with almost every night shift, you had reached the brief but very nice period of peace that usually happened around 3 AM. You decided to use this time to do a little inventory in the supply closet.
After a minute or so, you heard the door being opened, the noise of the ED filling the small room for a moment before the door got shut again.
When you looked over your shoulder, you found Dr. Abbot standing by the door. The air in the room was immediately thick with tension. The two of you had been flirting all night long. Seemingly accidental brushes of the hands, walking by him a little too close, locking eyes for one or two seconds longer than necessary.
“Hey, Dr. Abbot”, you said in a deliberately neutral tone and grabbed some packages of gauze. “Can I help you with something?”, you asked with your back to him.
“If you keep this up, we’re gonna have a problem”, he said from the door, his arms crossed in front of his broad chest. A smile washed over your face but you made sure to wipe it off before you turned around.
“What are you talking about?”, you asked innocently. He started walking towards you, slowly, dropping his arms to his side.
“All that flirting…it’s distracting”, he told you but the closer he got, you noticed that he didn’t sound mad like his words may suggested. You lifted your chin in a defying way.
“I’m sorry if I made you uncomfortable”, you said but you didn’t sound sorry at all. By now, he was so close, you had to look up at him which you could see he liked.
“It’s my pants that are getting uncomfortable”, he replied. He caught you visibly off guard with his comment.
“If I can be of assistance in any way, Dr. Abbot…”, you offered in a seductive tone, letting his name roll off your tongue.
His eyes shot down to your lips and back up to your eyes. He took a little step further and you could feel his body heat radiating off of him. You saw his Adams apple bobbing when he swallowed hard.
“We shouldn’t be doing this”, he lowly said, growled almost. You licked your lips and his eyes followed every movement of yours.
“Live a little, Dr. Abbot”, you leaned forward and whispered at his ear, challenging him.
The next moment, his hand was on your throat, pushing you back against the shelf behind you. His hand was not rough on you, not squeezing in any way, just holding you in place as he crashed his lips onto yours.
The packages of gauze fell from your hand before you brought it up to hold on to the wrist of his hand on your throat, digging your nails into his skin and making sure his hand stayed right there. He noticed it and moaned against your lips.
All the energy that had built up today and the weeks before, he brought into that kiss. He was hungry, he was forceful. And you enjoyed every second of it because you were no better.
You wrapped your arms around his shoulders and pressed him against you, wanting to feel his body on yours.
Your tongue dove into his mouth. You moaned loudly, forgetting where you were for a second and Jack pressed his mouth onto yours a little harder.
You could have continued this into all eternity but you knew you were in here already too long. But you weren’t done with him yet. You were craving him so badly, kissing alone would not be enough.
“I need you to fuck me”, you said breathlessly as you broke the kiss. He looked at you with glossed over eyes, his lips red and swollen from kissing you. You didn’t even want to think about what your mouth looked like from his scruff.
“You sure?”, he asked and sounded equally breathless. “Fuck yeah”, you nodded and turned around.
“I heard there's supposed to be a stack of condoms hidden here somewhere”, you said as you rummaged through the shelve in front of you.
“Wait, what?”, Jack asked confused. “Ha, got it”, you exclaimed and held up the half empty box of condoms. “All the years of working here and I've never heard of that”, he said. “Hard to believe”, you commented as you ripped open the little package.
“Enough talking now, we’ve already been in here way too long”, you reminded him, handed over the open packet and turned around again.
You pulled down your scrubs and underwear to your knees and heard him doing the same.
The next moment, he pushed his body against yours and pressed you against the shelve. Your hands automatically reached out to brace yourself.
“You really wanna do it?”, he asked at your ear in a husky voice, asking for consent one more time. His breath on your skin gave you goosebumps.
“Yes”, you nodded. “Fuck me, Dr. Abbot”, you added and looked over your shoulder. His eyes darkened a little bit and it made you shiver in anticipation.
You felt his hands grab your hips, steadying you before he slowly pushed his hard cock between your folds, testing the waters. You were already wet from your little make-out session.
He pushed his cock further until he was completely inside you. You let out a gasp as you felt his full length. “Fuck”, he groaned and his grip got tighter. He started moving, thrusting into you and picking up the speed with every thrust.
Your mind went blank as you got fucked hard by Dr. Abbot in the supply closet. The idea alone almost made you come.
His left arm snaked around your waist, pushing you back into him with every thrust. You felt his fingers pulling the scrunchy off your hair, making it fall all over your back. The next moment, his hand collected it and wrapped it around to pull back your head. It made you gasp as your head landed on his shoulder.
You felt his mouth on your neck and his teeth grazing your skin before he kissed the same spot. It sent electric shock waves through your body.
“Fuck, I’m gonna come”, you moaned. His hand let go of your hair and he placed it over your mouth, which you were grateful for because just a few thrusts later, you came so hard, you couldn’t control your sounds.
Jack muffled you as best as he could while burying his face at your neck to muffle his own groan as he emptied himself into the condom.
“Not bad, Dr. Abbot”, you said out of breath as you pulled your pants back up. “I've just been inside you, I think it’s time you call me Jack”, he told you and tucked himself away in his pants. He put the used, tied up condom into an empty rubber glove and put it in his pocket to throw it away later.
“I prefer Doctor, we wanna stay professional, don’t we?”, you commented and shot him a playful smile. “I don't think what we just did anyone could call professional”, he replied, lightly chuckling.
“And it can't happen again”, he added in a more serious tone. “We'll see”, you just shrugged your shoulders and straightened your shirt.
“No, it really can't happen again, I'm your superior”, he clarified. “And here I was thinking you were the fun superior”, you teased him, not at all intimidated by his tone or words. You looked around you to look for your scrunchy, thinking it might have ended up on the floor.
“I am fun”, he countered, sounding a bit hurt. “I thought so, too, until a minute ago”, you said. You loved to play with him. “Ah”, you said when you spotted your scrunchy on his wrist. You reached out and slipped his off his arm.
“And just to be clear, you're the chief attending of the night shift, I work the day shift”, you lectured him while pulling your hair up with your two hands and quickly transformed them into a ponytail. He raised his eyebrow at you. “Usually”, you quickly added. “Also, even if you like to think that sometimes, you doctors are not the bosses of us nurses”, you lectured him.
“I really don’t want it to be awkward between us from now on. We work really well together, I don’t want to jeopardize that”, he continued.
“Lighten up, Dr. Abbot, you just had sex”, you joked as you collected the packages of gauze off the floor and approached the door.
“Good sex?”, he asked and a playful tone was back in his voice. “Oh yeah”, you assured him with a nod and a dirty grin before you left the supply closet, hearing a chuckle behind you before the door fell shut.
The shift picked up its pace in the last couple of hours as two separate car accident victims came in.
Later that same day, you arrived back at the ED for a half shift of six hours to get back into your normal routine after your night shift.
“Ladies”, you greeted Perlah and Princess at the Hub. Both of them turned around at the sound of your voice, the biggest smiles plastered on their face.
“What is it? What happened?”, you were immediately alarmed. You haven’t been gone that long, what the hell could have happened in the past 6 hours?
“We heard a little rumor”, Perlah said and wiggled her eyebrows at you. “Yeah, no surprises there. You create at least half of them”, you countered and logged into the computer next to them.
“Juanita from cleaning said that she heard someone hooking up in the supply closet last night”, Princess said with such enthusiasm like she had just discovered the cure for cancer.
Your hand froze on the mouse. “What? Really?”, you asked and your voice sounded unusually high, even to yourself.
“Yes. And some of the other nurses told us that you were very flirty with Abbot last night”, Perlah commented. “I flirt with everyone”, you shrugged it off or at least tried to.
Both of them just looked at you, you looked at the screen, doing everything in your power not to look over to them.
“Y/N”, Perlah said but you didn’t move. “Y/N”, Princess said your name again.
“Girl, did you hook up with Dr. Abbot in the supply closet last night?”, Princess asked you in a whispered tone. You looked over at her. “Who?”, you tried to deflect.
Princess cocked her head and gave you a look of disbelief. “Dr. Abbot, your favorite doctor and target?”, Perlah reminded you. “Oh, the army vet with the gray hair and nice smile? Yeah, don’t know him”, you shook your head and turned back to the computer.
“Oh my god, it’s true”, Princess said and covered her mouth with her hands. “I have no idea what you’re talking about”, you kept your defenses up. “You don’t have to say anything, it’s written all over your face”, Perlah giggled. “This is ridiculous. I have to get back to work”, you said and left them at the station.
“Was it good?”, Perlah called after you. “Yep”, you only said and heard them laughing out loud as you walked away.

“Ahh!”, you heard a scream from South 17 and turned around. You were in the middle of preparing to draw blood from a patient. You saw an aggressive patient charging at Princess who looked visibly horrified with her back against the wall, pulling his hand back to throw punches at her.
Without thinking twice, you charged towards the room, being joined by Donnie and Perlah on the way.
“What's going on?”, you heard Dana in the background but didn't have time to stop and explain. You ran right through the door and pushed the huge man out of the way with full force, just as he was taking a swing at Princess.
The way you had tackled him, he went right down. He was so out of it, he didn’t even brace himself and hit the floor right away. He screamed and moaned loudly as you landed on him. You pushed yourself up and rolled him over on his belly, grabbing one of his arms and twisting it on his back.
He was still moving quite a lot and managed to rip his arm from your grip. In the process, he made you move your arm in a weird way and a sting of pain shot through your shoulder, but only for a second.
You grabbed his arm again and put a knee on his back where you knew it would hurt the most and pushed him further down, using your whole bodyweight.
“Stay down!”, you shouted as he continued wiggling beneath you, twisting his arm a little more. He screamed out in pain and anger. You didn't know why he was in the ED, the stank of alcohol that wafted off him gave you a pretty good idea, though. There will certainly be a few new injuries to be treated as well.
“I said, stay down, moron”, you said with a harsh tone in your voice. “Someone sedate him please”, you said over your shoulder but didn't want to take your eyes off the patient. “I got it”, Donnie said behind you and put the needle into the patient's leg. He went all limp and silent beneath you almost immediately.
“What the hell is going on here?”, you heard Dana behind you. “The patient attacked Princess and Y/N came charging in here and tackled him like Anthony Munoz”, Donnie brought her up to speed.
When you got up and turned around, you found Dana and Robby checking out Princess who was still shaking. You blew the strands of hair that had come lose from your ponytail out of your face.
“You okay, Princess?”, you asked your colleague and looked her up and down for any visible injuries. “I'm okay”, she said but her voice was shaky. “We're gonna make sure of that”, Dana said and threw the patient on the floor a dirty look.
“Give her a full check-up, concussion protocol”, Robby told Dana and then turned to you. “Are you okay?”, he asked and took a good look at you, scanning you from head to toe. “Peachy. Not my first whacko”, you waved it off and re-did your ponytail. You played it cool but your heart was racing. You felt the adrenaline pulsing through your veins.
“Both of you need to fill out an incident report. Especially you”, he pointed at you. Robby then turned towards the patient who was being taken care of by Donnie, Jesse and Whitaker.
“Get him on a gurney and get him to CT and radiology, take a look at that arm and head. And strap him down. Not risking anything when he wakes up”, Robby ordered.
“What is he here for?”, he asked and looked around the room for answers. You stepped up to the computer and pulled up his file. “Intoxication”, Princess answered and her breath was still rapid from the shock. “Any idea what he’s on?”, he asked her.
“His blood levels are 0.24, came here after police found him running into traffic and getting sideswiped by oncoming traffic”, you read from his file and answered for Princess. “A real treat we've got here”, Robby commented and sounded tired.
“I'll take him up”, you suggested and pushed up the sleeves of your shirt. “You've done enough for the day. Isn't your shift almost over? Why don't you go home”, Robby told you. “After the report”, he added.
“I told you I'm fine. I'm gonna get him up to CT, fill out the report and I'll be on my merry way, boss”, you countered. “You sure?”, he asked again and gave you one of his typical Robby looks you have come to know over your little time here at PTMC already.
“Absolutely”, you reassured him again and walked over to the phone to call ahead to radiology, telling them you’re bringing up a patient that needed to skip the line.
“She's a though kid”, Dana said as she watched you strap down the now sedated patient to the bed from the nurse’s station. Robby was standing next to her and glanced over at you after looking to Princess who was being checked out by Mel in Central 9.
“She's gonna give you a run for your money”, Robbie commented as they both watched you work. Jack came up behind them to start his shift.
“I know”, Dana smiled, glad that someone here was looking out for everybody just like she did. She knew that everybody was looking out for everyone, but someone like you, willing to right out tackle a patient in full running speed was still somewhat hard to come by.
“Who are you talking about?”, Jack asked and put his backpack underneath the counter of the nurse’s station. “We had a code hula-hoop with Princess”, Robby updated him.
“Is she okay?”, he asked alarmed and came around the station to stand next to Dana. “She's getting checked out by Dr. King, but she said she's fine”, Dana told him. “Yeah, thanks to Y/N”, Robby added. “The guy pushed Princess against the wall”, Dana continued and nodded over to South 17. “Y/N came in, tackled him to the floor and twisted his arm on his back”, Dana continued and sounded really proud of you.
Jack looked over to 17 where he found you rolling the bed of the sedated patient towards the door. He was a big guy, especially compared to you. He watched you closely for any signs of distress, nerves or fear but you looked totally in your element.
“I'm starting to really like her”, Dana commented and gave you one last look before heading over to Princess.
Intrigued by you, Jack watched you coming towards them, pushing the gurney of the patient with the help of another nurse. A light smile played around the corner of his lips.
“Nice work, Y/N”, Robbie said as you wheeled the patient past the counter in the direction of the elevators.
“Thanks boss”, you said to Robby and when you caught Jack’s eyes on you and the look he was giving you, you shot him a wink. The way he looked at you was no less than interested, you could see that immediately. And you liked that he seemed to think of you that way.
Robbie turned around and looked at Jack with a raised eyebrow. Jack just cleared his throat and turned around to look at the patients’ board.
“Alright, let's get started”, he said, grabbed a chart from the stack before heading over to one of the beds, taking on a patient.
After bringing your patient to CT, you were ready to go home. The adrenaline had worn off and all you felt was tired. But you had promised Robby to fill out an incident report. With a deep sigh, you sat down at the computers in South and pulled up the correct form. While typing away, you didn't hear Dr. Abbot approaching you.
“With skills like that, you'd be a good fit for the night shift”, Jack said and startled you a bit. You looked up and found him standing next to you.
“Where do you think I spent the last 7 years?”, you said as you put finishing touches on your report. “I transferred here to escape it”, you told him as you saved the form and uploaded it to the hospital's cloud. “And due to budget cuts”, you added.
You got up from your seat and pulled the scrunchy from your hair, running your fingers through it to shake it out a bit. “What a shame”, he said in a neutral tone, his eyes following the movements of your fingers in your hair.
A slight pain stung in your upper arm and shoulder which made you flinch. “Have you been checked out yet?”, Jack asked and took a step closer to you.
“I'm fine”, you answered automatically and rolled your shoulder to get the stiffness out. “Ouch”, you said involuntary as another pain shot through your arm.
“Alright, come on”, Jack said and ushered you over to an empty bed. He gently helped you up.
He grabbed your left arm by the wrist and slightly above the elbow, extended it fully and then bent it at the elbow. You felt the warmth of his touch even through your shirt.
“Any pain?”, he asked and looked up from your arm, scanning your face intently. “No”, you answered. He raised an eyebrow at you, not believing you fully. “No”, you repeated emphatically. “Alright”, he just commented.
His hand moved from your wrist to your elbow and before he put his other hand on your shoulder, he gently brushed your hair to the back. His fingers grazed your skin at the crook of your neck just where the collar of your shirt ended. It was light and unintentional by him but it made you swallow hard. Your eyes wandered to his face, scanning it, looking for any sign this might not have been as unintentional as you had thought.
He started lifting and rotating your arm slowly and pain shot through your shoulder. “Ah”, you hissed and flinched, being brought back to reality.
“Mh-hm”, he simply commented and moved to the other side of the bed, your back facing him now.
You felt how his hand gently pushed your hair to the side and over your other shoulder. His fingers brushed along the back of your neck and you closed your eyes for just a second, enjoying it.
You suddenly remembered where you were and your eyes snapped open again. You were glad that he couldn't see your face right now because you were sure that your cheeks were a little flushed.
His fingers gently pushed along your shoulder and up your neck along the spine. Wherever his fingers touched your bare skin, it felt like his fingerprints were burnt into your skin. You swallowed hard and took a deep breath. Fuck, it’s really been a while, huh?
“Any pain?”, he asked and his voice sounded closer than you had expected. You felt his raspy tone down to your core. “Ehm, n-no”, you quickly remembered how to speak and cleared your throat.
He grabbed your arm and shoulder once more and pulled it lightly towards him which made you hiss again.
“Looks like a light sprain”, he nodded as he let go of your arm and came around the bed again.
“I guess I didn't just twist his arm in the process”, you said and pulled a face when you rolled your shoulder once more to see if it actually hurt. Yep, it did.
He extended his hand to help you off the bed. You gladly took it and all of a sudden, you were standing quite close to him. You had to tilt your head up a bit to look him in the eyes. Your heartbeat quickened, just a little bit. You noticed that his eyes were a warm hazel.
Only when he let go of your hand, you realized that you were still holding it. You hoped that he couldn’t hear your heart pounding loudly in your chest.
“Stop by the pharmacy on your way out, I'll put in your prescription”, Jack said and walked over to one of the computers and started typing. “Thanks, doc”, you shot him a smile and walked over to the lockers to get your stuff.
“Take it easy the next few days”, he said when you walked past him again. “We'll see if this place lets me”, you countered. “It won't”, he answered and smirked at the screen.
“What a girl's gotta do to catch a break, huh?”, you asked. He knew your question was rhetorical so he just looked at you with a small smile.
“Goodnight, Dr. Abbot”, you said and put your backpack on your good shoulder as you walked towards the pharmacy.
