Just saw some One Piece fan art that gave me a flash of inspiration. No time to doodle, so I'm just gonna write it out and come back to this later.
One Pice characters / American civil riots (70's)
I know the concept sounds intense, but hear me out:
Brook, a long time hippie and civil rights activist in a band called the Rumbar Pirates. They write songs and protest about things like saving the whales. Some of his bandmates, including their original lead singer/comper, die during the AIDs crisis, Brook takes over as composer, and the rest of the band is eventually detained sent to jail for participating in riots. He still hangs out in the scene, trying to keep up the fight, but occasionally gets associated with more radical individuals
Jinbe, a security officer who used to run with an anti-sematist group, who's leader was gunned down gut the cops. He has big aspirations of eventually becoming a police officer and helping dismantle the racism and bigotry from within the system. His job at the moment is helping keep an eye on the peaceful protesters, but with how things are going to pan out he's going to leave his post very soon.
Robin, daughter of immigrants who were deported during the Red Scare. She got left behind because she was born in the US (Border Patrol Aokiji keeps tabs on her but never helps). Living on the street had her falling in with a lot of dangerous and unsavory folks, eventually leading her to meeting Crocodile. She joined his group on the condition he lets her attend school to become a licensed archeologist so she can leave the country.
Franky, a runaway who was taken in by a mechanic after he found Franky living out in his junkyard. Tom took in both Franky and Iceberg and raised them well, but mounting tensions caused by the police racially profiling Tom eventually led to them blaming him for a shootout that occurred near his property. CPS took Franky and Iceburg when Tom was framed and sent to prison, but Franky ran away and lived on the streets, eventually starting his own gang of fellow runaways.
Zoro, grew up in the foster system but spent most of his time at dojo's, so he didn't have to be in the facility or at his foster family's house. He did eventually grow close with his foster sister Kuina, but she died in a murder mystery fashion, which became a Cold Case. Zoro spent most of his early teen years, up to and after his emancipation, in and out of juvenile detention facilities.
Sanji, came from an abusive house with generational wealth. When he ran away at age 9, no one even reported him missing. Zeff, a veteran running a restaurant, found Sanji starving and rooting through his trash bins one day and took him in. Growing up with Zeff's stories about war and human nature radicalized Sanji against war and the system, but also ingrained strange prejudices and old-fashioned values into him.
Nami, entered the foster system very early in life and was quickly adopted by Bellemer, who was a former cop and activist. She was killed during a home invasion, and Nami and Nojiko were sent back to CPS. Nami was placed in a foster home under Arlong and grew up being used and financially taken advantage of. As soon as she was emancipated, she left and never looked back.
Ussop, grew up as the neighborhood kid. With his father being a walkout and his mother dead of Syphilis, the neighborhood parents did their best to keep him away from CPS, since they were scared what the system might do to him. Families would take turn hosting him as they were able to, and he grew very good at being able to lie about his home situation. He made it through high school fairly easily, which is where he met Kaya, who became a good friend. As a teen, he was every kid's big brother.
Luffy, the son of an abolitionist, Luffy was left in the care of his grandfather (a police chief) almost immediately after being born. He met Shanks, a civil rights activist, while attending a daycare during Garp's working hours. After Luffy started parroting talks about racial and gender equality to Garp, he sent Luffy to live with the Dadan, a former convict now foster mom, where he met Ace and Sabo. Sabo was a runaway, who was caught by the police and sent back to his parents house several times. Ace was the sun of a man Garp had caught and had sent to jail, and as soon as he was emancipated , he left the Dadan's home. Luffy also followed him once he was emancipated, narrowly dodging Garp sending him to a military boot camp.
Chopper, is a native american who grew up facing a lot of bullying, discrimination, and racially charged violence. His only friend growing up was a crazy local man who ran an illegal clinic without a license. Hiroluk inspired Chopper to study medicine. Unfortunately, he was killed during a standoff with police after they raided his clinic conducting a drug bust, which turned out to have come from a false lead. His death deepened Chopper's resolved to become a doctor and also radicalized him against the war on drugs.
I'll post more about this as things come to me, but I can clearly see in my head how the straw hat crew comes together.
Corazon walks up the docks of Dressrosa's main port. The happy smiles of a fisherman coming in and heading out, civilians and workers working the lines and bargaining for fresh seafood are a cheerful cacophony in his ears. None of it sticks in his mind, and all of it serves to set him more ill at ease. The closer he gets to the town, the more a drowning sensation fills Corazon's body. It's the same fear he felt when he was a kid, when the crowd of angry people hunted his family down, burnt their mansion… Corazon leans against the wall of a nearby building and clutches at his chest, breathing hard. Every muscle in his body is screaming to run in different directions, to get away, to hide, to not exist. He activates a calm space around himself to deafen the noise of the people around him, a happy country from the outside, but much like Corazon in this moment, being internally pulled apart.
Corazon's hand grips at the heart pirate emblem on his shirt, something sewn in place years ago when Law declared their jolly roger. The crew had had a fun time coming together in the Polar Tang to sew each other uniforms, marking them all as Heart Pirates. In a way, the method they chose was mimicking the Sun Pirates Corazon had told them about. He focuses on the stitching and the memory of how they got there, slowing his breathing as he does so. Panic attacks like this are rare for him nowadays, but never impossible. As the sensations subside and his breathing becomes more regular, Corazon looks down at his trembling hand.
"I guess, in some ways, we never really grow up…"
With another deep breath, he pushes off from the warm wall and keeps walking further into the town, keeping that bubble of calm around him.
A flash of pink pulls Corazon out of his own thoughts. Doflamingo swoops across the town using his strings and drops in front of Corazon like a vibrant bird of death.
Doflamingo strides towards his brother with zero hesitation and embraces him in a hug. The residents of the city 'ooh' and cheer for their benevolent king as Doflamingo uses the embrace to dig his fingers into Corazon's shoulders.
"What took you so long?" He whispers in his brother's ear.
Doflamingo pulls back slightly and looks at his brother. He takes note of the shaking, the cold sweat, the look of fear in his eyes so fresh and raw, much like he was 13 years ago. For a moment Doflamingo can almost forget the events that occurred on Swallow Island had never happened, but then he looks down at Corazon's shirt and sees not his mark, but the mark of the Heart Pirates, a bright smile encased in a bubble. Doffy grins despite the mild frustration that arises from seeing that mark. Elation of having Corazon back in his fold pushes that to the side.
"Come now. Let's get you home and reintroduce you to the family. We've got a few more members since you last saw them. Baby 5 and Buffalo have gotten so big, I'm sure you won't even recognize them." Doflamingo throws an arm over Corazon's shoulder and guides him up the street, not waiting for a response of any kind. The plebeians around him give their usual cheers of adulation at the passing of two rulers in their midst. Finally, the Donquiote family is back in power where they belong. Absolutely nothing could ruin this moment for him.
"He's a traitor, a marine!"
An accusatory finger is shoved into Corazon's face. He doesn't flinch , or even acknowledge the pointer, continuing to hold Doflamingo's gaze.
Doffy slams a hand down on the table causing everyone to jump back.
"Where's the proof?"
His icy words cut through the discontent of the room.
"But… Twelve years ago…" Golia tentatively speaks up.
"Didn't Vergo say he caught him trying to pass information to the Marines. You even shot him for treachery!"
"Yeah, and why was he on the island in the first place?" Tonton also speaks up.
"He was there because I told him to meet us there. There's no way we were going to pay full price for the Opi-OPi-no-mi, but it's unfortunate that Corazon and Law arrived before us. Vergo did say he caught someone passing a message to the marines but not who." Doflamingo looks Golia in the eye.
"Apparently it was Law who was doing that."
All of the assembled family members mutter. Who were there on that day think back, recalling the event of twelve years ago. It was Law who was caught with a message meant for the Marines trying to get on a marine ship. The family even suspected that he had succeeded in getting on a ship that day, only to later discover that it was a different boy the marines had picked up. They look at each other in confusion and concern. Time has made all of their memories rather fuzzy, especially since many of them tried hard to forget that day. For the longest time afterwards, Doffy had not been the same, and they all knew why.
"I don't doubt Vergo." Dolamingo cuts through the murmurs yet again.
"But I don't doubt my brother either. Whatever happened that day, Cora paid for it with blood. The blood of the gods that was spilled that day is worth more than any amount of gold, and as I see it, is perfect recompense for any wrongdoing that may or may not have been committed." He looks around at his family, a lot of them already nodding in agreement, willing to let bygones be bygones. They are all so loyal, so invested in his words. If Doffy said gravity does not exist, they would do their best to fly.
Corazon narrows his eyes and also looks around the room. It feels wrong how easy this is. Just a few words from Doflamingo and they're already to turn on the truth they have held onto for twelve years. Corazon never imagined he would be in this position again, a spy for the Navy in the Donquiote family. After his cover was blown, Corazon expected that he would forever stand opposed to his brother instead of by his side. The lengths to which Doffy is going to protect him and keep him close has Corazon hopeful, but terrified. There is a deep-seated fear within him that this time, should he or Law slip up, Doflamingo will finish the job he started, with extreme prejudice. But a small whisper of hope still grows in his heart that, perhaps, his big brother does care about him and family more than he cares about whatever diluted aspirations he holds. It's a vain hope and one that will likely be crushed, but Corazon cannot help but entertain the thought.
"He will be kept under careful watch though, right, young master? Senior Pink speaks up. Corazon glances over at the man with a wary, but confused look. Senior Pink has changed so much over the last decade Corazon is not entirely sure who this person is.
"Of course, he will." Doflamingo raises a hand in agreement as the rest of the family members sigh with relief. The hand comes down on Corazon's shoulder.
"I'll be keeping an eye on him. Personally."
To everyone assembled, that sounds like a threat of the highest order, but to Cora specifically, that threat gives him a moment of relief. If Doflamingo is the only one he has to worry about, and keep fooled, he's confident that both he and Law will be just fine.
"Now, if there are not anymore orders of business for us to discuss, let's go prepare a welcome party."
"Ooh, a party!" Dillinger claps.
"Right away!"
"Yes, master!"
The Donquixote family scatters, many of them give Corazon withering looks of suspicion as they pass.
"Doffy, can I have a word?" Trebol approaches them and actually smiles at Corazon.
"Sure. Cora, I'll meet you in the courtyard." Doflamingo points at Corazon as he walks away, leaving Cora alone in the dark meeting room.
"Here you go. Let me know if you need anything else." Baby 5 Hands Corazon a saucer and teacup with a smile.
He knows what's going to happen. This was her favorite trick to play on him. He'll take a sip of the tea, it will be too hot, he'll spit it out, and then fall over backwards. It was the only form of amusement he could offer her as a child. The bittersweet memory brings a smile to Cora's face as he stares down at the steaming cup. He takes a sip and nothing happens. Cora blinks at the perfectly temperatured tea and looks up at Baby 5. She grins.
"You expected it to be too hot?"
He nods.
"I considered it but since this is your first day back home I thought I'd be extra nice to you." Baby 5 smiles cutely, a young girl grown into a beautiful woman.
"Don't let your guard down though." She cheerfully heads back into the mansion, leaving Cora alone next to the fountain. Watching her leave, Cora feels a strange emotion well up in his heart, and he's glad she seems to have grown up healthy, despite her environment and the adults in her life. He takes another sip of the tea and wishes that she had left it hot at least for old time's sake.
Doflamingo finds Corazon in that same place, still sitting by the fountain with an empty and long finished cup of tea next to him. Doffy pauses and stops in the door to watch Corazon. His brother has removed both his cloak and his hat, reclining on the bench in front of the fountain. His head is tilted back over the backrest of the seat and, from this distance, Doflamingo cannot tell if his chest is moving or not. The sudden jolt of a memory races through his mind and Doffy heads out into the courtyard. As he approaches, Corazon looks up at the sound of his footsteps. Cora's glasses slip off his nose with the action and Doflamingo stops as he locks eyes with his brother. His gaze contains neither determination nor fear in this moment, all previously rampant emotions gone. Red-gold eyes stare up at Doflamingo with the innocence of a child and the weathered weariness of a grown man, the same eyes as the day he shot Corazon, but not nearly as cold as the snow from that day. It finally hits Doffy just how much happened while the both of them were separated. He moves again and sits down next to Cora.
For several minutes, neither of them say anything, nor do they even look at each other. They just exist together in this space, the only sound to backdrop the science between them the burbling of the water in the fountain. Corazon's head slowly tilts back until he is looking straight up at the sky while Doffy's head remains in a half bowed position, his own eyes fixed on the tiles of the courtyard. Eventually, Doffy speaks up.
"You haven't spoken to any of the others." It's not a question or a threat, just a simple statement.
Corazon nods and quietly says
"No, I haven't."
"Why is that?" Do flamingo casually leans back and looks at his brother.
Cora makes a face at the sky, an expression of contemplation before shrugging.
"Habit." He says simply.
"Hard to break that, huh?" Doffy teases.
Cora doesn't smile
"I guess so. The only ones I can feel like I can talk to are you and Law…"
'Who is not here.'
"That's good enough I suppose. You don't really need to talk to the others anyway. What would you even say?" Doffy chuckles.
The long moment stretches into hours, the two simply sit next to each other. Quiet moments like this were not uncommon back then, before Doflamingo knew his brother was a marine. They were never this quiet or serene though, always backdropped by noises elsewhere in the ship or the warehouse. The silence feels like a bitter medicine to Doflamingo, something that makes him uncomfortable but he feels the need to give in to. It's not a sensation he's familiar with, and it's not something he likes. But for the first time in what may be his whole life, Doflamingo is willing to give at least this much to Corazon. As long as his little brother is content to simply sit here and be a part of his life, he's willing to take the mild discomfort.
Corazon sighs into his cigarette and leans back on the deck bench. It's been a few years since he has gotten to travel the sea above the waves. The marine vessel he is taking to Dressrosa is a lot bigger and less cozy than the Polar Tang, but just as loud. The sound of Marines going about their business, training, cleaning and maintaining the deck, send Corazon's mind back to his own days of training. The chuckle escapes his lips as he remembers the trouble Bellemere used to start, of how she would always drag him into whatever mess she created, and for some reason it was always Smoker ratting them out. Back then Corazon was timid and jumpy, easily sent flying by Bellemere's rambunctious fist. He never could win against her.
"You crybaby!"
The memory of her voice echoes in Corazon's mind and he wonders where she is and how she's doing. After leaving the marines she fell out of contact with all of them and he never got around to checking up on her. Cora puffs his cigarette thoughtfully.
"Maybe I should ask Smoker about that next time.I see him…" He muses aloud.
A passing young marine with pink hair and thick glasses pushed up over a bandana hears Corazon's musings and stops.
"You know captain smoker…?" He wonders to the person who should clearly be identifiable as a pirate.
"Eh? Ah…." Corazon searches for a response that is not the truth.
"Yeah, I've met him…" Close enough.
The young man looks Cora up and down.
"Aren't you a pirate?"
"In a manner of speaking." Cora grins at the boy and puts out his cigarette.
"Then what are you doing on our ship?"
"I'm… Part of a warlord's crew. I have some personal business in Dressrosa, so the navy was kinda enough to let me catch a ride." He chuckles nervously, out of practice with lying. That's something that will need to be addressed.
The young marine nods, as if this is the most natural person to encounter on the deck of a marine ship.
"Your captain couldn't just take you there themself?"
"There are certain circumstances that required us to part ways for a bit."
"I see…" Coby doesn't quite understand, but he nods along anyway.
"You're rather calm for someone interacting with a pirate." Corazon teases him gently.
"Oh, am I sorry about that!" He rubs the back of his neck in embarrassment.
'I wonder if this is what I was like as a cadet?' Corazon stifles a chuckle.
"Not at all, it's a welcome change. Most Marines look down pirates, even the government sanctioned ones. After all, pirates are the cause of a lot of evils in this world." His eyes darken.
"Not all of them, sir." Coby's confidence snaps back quickly.
"I've met plenty of Marines who are more horrible than any pirate I've ever heard of, and I've met pirates who were kind people. I don't think we can say one is good or the other is evil, because in the end they're all just people."
Cortazone feels a breath of fresh air swirl around him as this young marine speaks a truth many people never reach. Looking into his bright, hopeful eyes, set and determined expression, fills Corazon with a swell of hope for the future. He smiles at Coby and reaches out to Pat his head.
"You're a good kid. Don't ever lose that clarity. This world is a big place full of a lot of things that will try to tear that away from you, so don't let it."
Coby stands there and takes the head pats with surprise.
"Yes, sir, umm… may I have your name?"
"Corazon, Donquixote."
"Donquixote?! Like The warlord Doflamingo?"
"Yes." Corazon sighs.
"He's umm… Certainly intimidating." Coby nervously rubs the back of his neck and tries to think of a compliment that is not a blatant lie. He had seen Doflaming very briefly nearly two years ago at Marineford, and the man had made a terrifying impression on not only Coby but many Marines that day.
"Wait, is that why you're going to Dressrosa? I heard he took over the kingdom after King Riku went mad."
Cortazon's expression darkens, and he looks down at the deck.
"That is in part my reasons for going there. Listen kid," Corazon stands up and looks intently down at the young cadet in front of him.
"Do not believe everything people tell you. The truth is something that should be assessed with your own eyes and ears." Not waiting for a response, Corazon heads off towards the control deck of the ship, leaving Coby standing there, wondering what the strange pirate man meant.
Once on the control deck, Corazon heads for the Captain's office, enters the room and quietly shuts the door behind himself. He turns to the captain of the ship.
"I asked you to stay inside your cabin. You're putting my men on edge." The captain glares over at Corazon who stands at his full height in the cabin.
"Sorry about that. I needed some fresh air." He exchanges a salute with the man.
"We'll be there soon. There's plenty of fresh air in Dressrosa.
"I'm sure there is." Corazon wanders over to a map of the New World mounted on the wall and stares at Dresrosa. His eyes trace the sea lanes marked out on the map to where Punk hazard should be, not even notated on this updated map.
"I appreciate the assistance none the less."
"Don't thank me." The captain waves him off and goes back to looking over the paperwork in front of him.
"I couldn't say no to a special request from Sengoku. Besides, now that I know you're an undercover Special Commander, I'm in potentially more danger than before." The man sighs.
"And here I was hoping I'd be able to peacefully retire in my old years."
"Sorry about that." Corazon turns it gives the man a sympathetic smile.
"Don't apologize either." The captain's gruff demeanor contrasts his more gentle tone.
"It's not your fault. We're all just doing our jobs."
Corazon nods , but says nothing, turning his eyes back to the map. Soon the ship will be docking in the Dressrosa, and then he will have to walk on his own into enemy territory. Corazon's gut twists in worry. What is he going to say to Doffy? What is Doffy going to tell the rest of the family, his gang of lackeys and followers? The danger Cora is about to face is far more nerve-racking than his entrance to their group more than 13 years ago. Back then, all he had to do was play the lost little brother, but now… Everyone around Doflamingo sees him as a traitor. Even if Doflamingo tells them to let it go and welcome him back, there's no way to go that easily. To think so is just wishful ignorance. Corazon's face screws up as he feels sick and wishes he hadn't put out that cigarette.
"Young master!' screams Golia as she bursts through the door of Doflamingo's office. Doffy turned where he was stood at the window, glass of wine in hand.
"What is it, Golia?"
"It's Corazon! He's back and he's here!" She shrieks.
"Where? Doflamingo snaps and quickly sets aside the glass in his hand.
"At the main dock in public and everything. What should we do?"
Deflamingo doesn't answer her. He brushes by Golia and takes long strides, moving down the hallway at an almost running pace. His eyes gleam with excitement behind ever present sunglasses. At the first opportunity he gets, Doflamingo hops out an open window and casts his strings out into the sky, flying up and away across the city

"So how exactly are we getting to the second half of the Grand Line?" Uni raises her hand from her seat next to Jean Bart at the Heart Pirates strategy meeting. The rest of the crew nods along as they eat their mid-meeting dessert, a tradition that was formed when the majority of the crew was still children. This meeting's treat is shaved ice.
"An excellent question." Corazon raises his spoon and points it at Uni, much like a proud teacher.
"The second half of the grand line is called the New World and is on the other side of the Red Line. There are a few ways to get there, but there are only 2 options currently available to us." Corazon gestures to the bowl of ice in front of him, pretending it is the Red Line, and uses his spoon to gesticulate his point.
"Once we reach the Shabondy archipelago, we can go either up and over or down and under. Mariejoise is at the top of the red line and, while it is the land of the gods, the world government has an elevator system set up that allows people to ride up to the top of the Red Line, walk across it, and go down the other side."
"The world government you say…"
"Exactly." Cortazon points to the crewmate, who has already caught his meaning.
"As the crew of a Warlord we could feasibly cross over the grand line in this manner, but that means we would spend at least a week surrounded by Marines. There's even a chance some of us would run into Celestial Dragons, which would be a bad interaction."
A few of the heart pirates look at Jean Bart sympathetically, but Law glances at Corazon. The former Celestial Dragon ignores the look.
"And the other option?" Law leaned back in his seat and prompts Corazon to continue.
"The other option is to go underwater and under the Red Line."
"That should be easy for us." Penguin puffs out his chest with pride. "The Polar Tang can take us anywhere underwater!"
"Aye aye!" Sachi Cheers next to him.
"The Polar Tang is the perfect ship to go underneath the Red Line." Corazon agrees.
"But in order to pass under the Red Line we will need to go by Fishman island." His tone turns somber as the rest of the crew is split between interest and excitement.
"You mean we'll get to see mermaids?" Satchi and Penguin leap up.
"I heard Fishman island is a paradise at the bottom of the sea!"
"Will we even be able to make it that far down? It's gotta be impossibly deep."
"The Polar Tank can withstand anything!"
"I wanna see a mermaid too."
"But isn't Fishman island dangerous?"
"Yeah. I hear that less than half of the ships that go there never make it."
"It is dangerous, but not for just those reasons." Corazon waves his spoon, silencing the crew.
"Fishmen have been mistreated by the World Government and people who live on the surface for so long. It was only recently the Ryugu Kingdom was recognized and given a seat at the Reverie. Just like many humans do not take kindly to Fishman, most Fishmen do not take kindly to humans." Corazon's somber attitude spreads to the rest of the crew as they all contemplate the implications of their own internalized racism.
"I guess if I was a Fishman, I wouldn't like humans very much either…" Cleone shakes his head.
"It is kind of fucked up that everyone likes mermaids, but no one likes Fishmen. They're the same, aren't they?" Uni turns to someone next to her.
"I can't imagine they'll be very hospitable to us, or any other pirates for that matter."
"If they weren't at least a little accommodating, no one would be getting to the New World though, now would they? We won't know unless we go there and ask ourselves!"
"That's a good point, but is it worth the risks?"
"We're going to need to anyway. If the sea floor is as far down there as I've heard we'll need to stop and refresh our oxygen, or we all die!"
The rest of the crew quiets down in somber consideration as they all eat their shaved ice.
"I don't see what the big deal is." Beppo speaks up, already on his third bowl.
"That's because Minks like you see the world differently."
"Yeah, if Fishmen had a thing against Minks you'd know exactly what we feel like."
"No I won't, I know I wouldn't!" Bepo objects.
Corazon cannot help but smile.
'If only everyone could have the same viewpoint as the Minks, there would be far less strife in this world.'
"Why don't we just do that then?" Umi leans forward over her empty bowl.
"Why don't we all just think like Bepo does when it comes to matters of race? Even if we all look different, we're all still living beings with emotions and feelings. If we just keep that in mind I'm sure it'll rub off on the people around us!"
A few Heart Pirates mutter about how things are not that easy and you can't erase the past.
"I don't see why not." Corazon beams at her.
"What do you think, Captain?" Cleone leans over and asks Law. The rest of the crew looks over to their Captain for guidance. They wait a breathlessly long moment before he finally speaks up.
"Whatever your thoughts are, they don't matter. If we go to Fishman island we'll need their help, in which case there will be no room for discrimination on my crew. If you don't like fishman, get over it." Law stands up and clears his bowl.
"Don't be so mean, Captain, of course none of us think like that!" One crewmate speaks for the rest and the entire mess hall of Heart Pirates cheers and smiles at their Captain.
"That's what I said." Law covers a twinge of embarrassment by leaving the room. A few crewmates chuckle as the conversation turns to more casual topics as they all finish off their shaved ice.
I've been working on my fanfic, 'Birds of a Feather, the Brothers Donquixote' for a while now. Initially, my focus was to write a short story that had minimal changes to canon One Piece events, with the only change being that Corazon survived and is a Heart Pirate. The scope of the story has changed somewhat, and I found myself at a difficult crossroads. While planning out the events of Punk Hazard and how things would change, I did have to consider how small changes I was making would have greater ramifications in later story arcs. My indecision over how to proceed has stalled writing, but I think most of the issues have been resolved.
Moving forward with the story I intend to implement every change I can think of, mostly abandoning cannon events while ignoring the Strawhats as much as possible. The rest of the story is going to be about Law, Corazon, and Doflamingo, as they were my initial focus. When and if this fanfic ever catches up to the manga, I will probably go back and write a second version of events that sticks as close to the canon as possible.

I really love the idea that Corazon trained with Bellamier and Smoker. Corazon and smoker hiding outback of the barracks to smoke cigarettes for the first time. The timid teen Cora getting his explosive anger from Bellamier and her teaching him how to throw a punch. Cora and Hina getting along. Just sweet moments between training
It's funny to me that my longest fanfiction was originally just a way to get more Corazon content, but also has me writing about Law (who I don't really have strong opinions on) and Dflamflamingo (who I vehemently hate). I have to think about these guys' character motivations, ideals, and how their relationship and the events around them would change with Corazon alive. What do you mean I have to consider Doffy's point of view? 💥😑
I filled this bucket with water and sat in it but that will not stop me from complaining about the tempature and my wet socks
