Somebody’s Memories: Found Photographs

An ambrotype portrait of a young man preserved in its original half case with gilt brass mat and velvet pad. The surviving case, embossed leather cover, and brass mat remain part of the photograph’s history as much as the portrait itself.

A tintype portrait of a young man mounted in a paper mat, dating to around the turn of the twentieth century. The reverse bears what appears to be the handwritten name “Theodore Strauch, Jr.,” preserving a small piece of the photograph’s history alongside the image itself.

An unmailed real photo postcard of a young girl in a white dress, holding a small bouquet in a photographer’s studio. The reverse is dated May 25, 1911, and notes that she was 4 years old.

A young soldier photographed at The Ulster Photographic Co. on Carlisle Road in Londonderry, likely sometime around the late 1880s or early 1890s. The uniform suggests a volunteer, militia, or cadet unit, though the regiment remains unidentified. The ornate waist belt may hold the key.

But at some point, “Cecile, 1926” was enough information for someone to save it.

Only that, at some point, someone thought it was worth saving.
