The man lets out bitter laugh before answering.
Ā Ā Ā Ā āIt is, but what can I do? I like the place."
He seems unwilling to make any further comment about the store, at least not before a sip of tea after all his mouth looks oddly dry. He looks away and frowns and then offers a smile before turning around, he walks up to the counter and disappears through a door, leaving no time for her continue arguing against his offer.
Two minutes later he comes back with a glass jar, filled with iced tea, and two cups that boasts on the wooden counter, while mumbling a melody under his breath. He fills both glasses and pushes one toward the woman, he smiles sweetly and takes a sip from his tea.
Ā Ā Ā Ā āLuckily, a jar was left in the fridgeā unfortunately without poison."
Narrowed eyes follow the man as he vanishes, and Karen is tempted to mirror the act, walking back out onto the street and pretending as though she was never here. She does not know why she stays - most likely it is a product of some subconscious whim - but by the time her reemerges with the tea, it is far too late to change her mind and embrace her cowardice.
She waits for the liquid to pass his lips before taking a sip herself. She did not normally have regard for manners and courtesy, but she felt compelled to at least partly follow them in this context. Something about the atmosphere of the shop was reminiscent of days gone by, and it was calming, it an odd way, despite the forced social interaction.
Small talk was beyond both her tolerance and ability, and she did not respond to the passing statement. It was made clear enough by her action that she doubted that it was actually poisoned, and thus his words warranted no further comment.Ā
sleepindarkness:
"I know itās fucking plant," John snaps, against his better judgement, giving her an increasingly annoyed look. He isnāt stupid. He knows what plants are and he knows that plants donāt do that. Or trap people with the intent of killing them. No, that belongs in bad scifi movies, not the real world. "Thank you, Captain Obvious."
He lets out a frustrated breath, free hand pinching the bridge of his nose. Where do they go from here? So long as sheās not trying to kill him, sheās not his problem and heās sure she doesnāt want to hang around him any more than she has to, but they both know a little more than they should at this point.
The condescending sneer lingers for a while longer, spurred onwards by the childish quip and the immature language. In her adulthood, Karen had developed a pretentious proclivity towards not using such language herself, and she makes a habit of judging those who did not share her distasteful reserve. Any excuse to despise someone, not that pointing a gun at her was not enough to invoke her loathing.
Her eyes remain trained on him. His body language is much more telling than hers, which revolves - at the moment - around making sure that she did not give him the opening to attack her. "Afraid of a little plant?" she mocks to break the silence.
eyelinerandcarvedwands:
"Mm, yeah," Piper knew that disappointed āthank youā all too well. She knew that dissatisfaction. It was shit to be a witch sometimes, especially when someone found out. Witches had a terrible reputation, and āstrange' was something she'd grown to prefer over other descriptions and reactions. āI know it sucks to be called strange. It sucks to not be normal, huh?ā
"It was what it is," the girl quipped somewhat detachedly. And nothing more. Karen had long passed the age of moping self-blame and pining over things she could never have in favor of an equally unhealthy attitude, directing her loathing outwards instead.Ā She no longer wished for normalcy - she blamed the poor reactions to her abilities on the people around her - not her own peculiarities.Ā
regimesfxll:
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āYouād be surprised."
And of course, she wouldnāt elaborate on that. Simple one-liners Ā and Ā quick Ā responses Ā were Ā all Ā that Ā was required for Ā a Ā conversation, especially with the other especially Ā with Ā the Ā other Ā it Ā seemed. Natasha Ā held appreciation for that fact.
Ā Ā Ā Ā āWas that a pun?ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā "Perhaps."
She finds herself skeptical once again, but she does not pursue it further. People liked to think that they were complicated and important, but they so rarely were.
"Not purposefully. I have no fondness for puns."

"Iāve been flying this thing since I was twelve, lay off"
"Which was, what, a year and a half ago?"
"Well it's my ship, I think I know what Iām doing"
"Ownership is no guarantee of ability."
Alanis pulled out her SHIELD badge out of her back pocket so the woman could read it. She hoped that this would satisfy her. She just wanted some answers and this was taking too long.
Karen does not bother to temper her disdain. āNot you all again.ā Her tone gave the eye roll for her, rendering the additional gesture unnecessary. āYou think people would learn to take a hint, but apparently such logic is beyond your colleagues.āĀ
"I donāt remember asking your permission"
"You didn't. I just enjoy informing people that they're idiots."
Barely hiding his annoyance from the statement with a tense jaw James tried to not snap at the woman; he didnāt doubt that someone was keeping a close eye on him and he really didnāt feel like being dragged to a secure location and questioned for twelve hours to make sure he hadnāt been tricking them all, still his irritation was obvious from his tone. āDo you always ask strangers their names without giving your own?ā
"It's been known to happen." Karen pushed her hair out of her face with a hand and a shrug of her shoulder, eyeing him with a stare defined by judgmental condescension. She never appreciated being told what to do. Regardless, she supplies her name with he appropriate amount of thorniness to convey her irritation, "Karen Hansen."

With a short pause he contemplated not answering the question but heād been brought up better then that and with a slight tip of his cap he gave a quick response, even it was mildly mechanical in nature. āJames Barnes.āĀ Ā The 21st century was a confusing place and the fact that everyone seemed to want to pry into other peoples private lives didnāt make any sense to him; the first time heād read a current newspaper was probably the most off putting thing, wondering why it was updating people on which celebrity had slept with someone.
Karen had never much cared for courtesy - so the tip of the cap grated on her nerves. To  her - courtesy was a façade, and she had no patience for dealing with people through veils and unspoken but loudly thought insults and judgments. The name meant nothing to her, and she wondered why she always asked who people were with the expectation that they would give her a useful answer. Foolish of her. "Boring name," she commented dryly.
paramount-icebound
Karen sat behind her desk with her feet resting on top of it. The faint smell of whiskey clung to her, lending further to her air of unprofessionalism. It was a Friday afternoon; she wanted to be working even less than the students wanted to be in class. That was not a workable excuse for one-time behavior ā she refused to work an entire day without a swig of something during class change regardless of the day of the week ā but it served to justify the escalation somewhat. Not that she cared what other people thought of her and her actions, or, at least, she would never admit it.
Her eyes flicked to the clock set in the wall as the door creaks open, brow furrowing as she was forced by necessity to squint slightly. It was nowhere near time for her next class ā as she had thought ā but no one ever trespassed on her space outside of scheduled class time. She had always made certain of that, scaring people away whenever they tried.
Her gaze fell to the surface of the desk and she leaned forward to shuffle a couple papers, feet still decidedly on the desk. She avoided looking at the trespasser in a conscious effort to dehumanize them and deflate whatever self-importance that had lead them to think that disturbing her was a good idea. āIām off-duty,ā she informed icily.
sleepindarkness:
āWeapons are weapons,ā He repeats, a certain unconvinced tone to his voice. Under normal circumstances, he would be inclined to agree with herā-weapons were weapons and any weapon could be lethal in the right hands, regardless of what the enemy had. But this was hardly normal, by any definition of the word.
"Yeah, except most people canāt do thatā-ā He indicates the vines wrapping themselves around her fingers, careful to point with his free hand and not the gun, lest he set her off again. āWhat the fuck is that?ā
"It's a plant," Karen says with the condescending, intolerant sneer of a colonist dealing with a barbarian for the first time. She does not like talking about her abilities, and these circumstances make it a thousand times worse. Lashing out had been an incredibly poor decision, but there was nothing she could do about that now.
"And I'm obviously not 'most people'." She has no desire to explain further than that - to admit that she has little to no understanding about why she can do that things that she can do aside from the mere fact that she can. Briefly, she entertains the notion of running away, but she doubts that she would get very far before he decided to raise the gun again.

"How peculiar."
Karen lets the wordsĀ stand on their own without further clarification, regarding the female before her with detached interest.
