I didn’t know where my heart would lie. Could I heal from that? Would I be enough for you? But that ultrasound, seeing your hands & feet.. seeing your face, lips & nose. Ntozake Shange was a novelist, poet, playwright, performance artist, feminist, & unapologetically black! I’ll never forget the first time I read “for colored girls who have considered suicide / when the rainbow is enuf”. I was so hypnotized by her words that I had to read it again. When Tyler Perry announced that he was making it into a movie I was so happy!! I’ve reread that very work of hers many a time & for every phase of my life, I feel it speaks to my soul in different ways. It’s something I think all women, not just African Americans, should read. & men should read it too to better understand the heart, mind, & soul of women. She will always be one of my favorite writers because she was one of the main staples in my life that showed me how to love myself for being black & for being a woman.
