STOP FUCKING FOLLOWING THIS BLOG ITS INACTIVE

I find it rlly interesting how although Rodrigo doesn’t want to serve Philip at first (‘serve’ as in be who Philip needs him to be— a friend, a confidant, someone he can put his trust in) as soon as he does become the favourite he feels the need to show if off. I mean, it’s even more obvious in the play but we see it in the opera as well — the garden trio being the most obvious example. There’s no point to this I just think it’s interesting that he refuses the favour so adamantly and then flaunts it like that. Someone enjoys having power methinks <3

Wait back to opera brainworms. I can’t find my old post about this but do you ever think about Philip saying “I put my heart into your loyal hands” to Rodrigo and then Carlo saying “You are my heart’s only hope, this heart which has loved you so” to the same man. Do you? Because I do

I keep thinking about Filippo’s relationship with his son and yeah he doesn’t love Carlo, that one line in the duet with the Inquisitor where he mentions nature and love cannot convince me he loves him because against that we have the rest of the opera lmao. But it’s not like he actively wants him dead either and I think it’s worse because he doesn’t care about Carlo to the point where he’d rather Carlo disappeared and just. Didn’t exist. Because if he exists he exists in every aspect of his life, both political and private and he’s in the middle of his marriage and Filippo does not want that kid in all his affairs. And the only context in which he gives a fuck about Carlo is when he’s some kind of problem. And he really is bothered by the idea of Carlo’s death but I’m wondering how much of that is because he’s family and how much is purely because it’s not a good look when you get your son killed lol
