TALK ABOUT HARUKA AND MICHIRU'S ENGAGEMENT. WHO ASKS WHO, WHERE AND WHEN, HOW MUCH PREPARATION WENT INTO IT AND WHAT WENT WRONG, WHAT DO THE RINGS LOOK LIKE, HOW MUCH DOES HARUKA CRY
Haruka asks, because of course Haruka asks. Michiru loves Haruka more than anything, but I don’t think marriage would be super important to her because the fuck does she need the MAN’S approval for? So I don’t know that it would occur to her until Haruka starts to incredibly unsubtly drop hints that she’s thinking of asking.
“So, wow, look at this wedding dress haha….I wouldn’t wear a wedding dress. Have you…thought about what you…might….I mean just as a question.”
“Would you say you’re a solitaire kind of girl or maybe a channel set or…” Michiru looks over at her and she stutters “I MEAN THE GUYS AT THE GARAGE WERE JUST TALKING ABOUT IT I’M ONLY CURIOUS.”
Finally, Michiru manages to get across, while preserving Haruka’s small show of ~secrecy~ that if Haruka asks her, yes, she will say yes. She knows how important it is to Haruka, the act of being claimed, of being chosen, of having a love to be sure of and something to symbolize that, and she wants to give that to Haruka.
AND HARUKA GOES INTO MAXIMUM WEDDING OVERDRIVE
Nothing is too majestic for this proposal, it has to be the most elaborate and perfect proposal the world has ever seen. Haruka has to shout her love for Michiru from the rooftops, the clarity of her pure perfection, LOVE IS EVERYTHING AND THERE SHOULD BE A BAND AND LIVE DOVE RELEASE.
She’s hemming and hawing over what she should do and when she should do it–she has a million ideas and none of them seem special enough for Michiru, perfect and elegant enough. Her diary is filled with plans that have been crossed out or overwritten.
Finally, she comes up with a plan. She tells Michiru to meet her at the aquarium so they can go watch the fish. Michiru shows up, to find the aquarium closed for a “special event” but she is given immediate entry.
As she walks through the exhibits, she sees her path is laid out with rose petals, and every few exhibits, there is a big construction paper heart with a memory Haruka has of the two of them together. (The cathedral is, in her attempt to be subtle “That time you did that really huge thing for me and got hurt really bad and then I got hurt really bad but it was mostly my fault and anyway then I knew you loved me”) She wants to roll her eyes–Haruka is such a sap, really–but she can’t stop herself from smiling at Haruka’s earnest and dedicated love. She reads a few of the cards and stares very intensely at the ceiling for no reason whatsoever and certainly not because she’s touched deeply at anyone being this loving to her.
She finally reaches the end–a large room where she remembered attending a benefit once, with a wall made of a saltwater tank. Her eyes widen. Everyone they know is here, staring at her expectantly. Of course they are, it’s Haruka. Haruka, in her finest suit, gets down on one knee and proceeds to offer a lengthy speech about love and beauty and Michiru, and Michiru wonders if the tile on the floor is going to leave a permanent mark in Haruka’s knee when she finally asks the question:
Michiru, of course, says yes, and somehow is not the slightest bit surprised when a band starts to play, champagne is popped, and the whole thing turns into an engagement party.
Haruka excuses herself to the eel exhibit to sob happily.
