Steven R. Smith’s Worstward Recordings

Bandcamp Monday!!! This week, I’m directing you over to Steven R. Smith’s Worstward Recordings page, which is an embarrassment of psychedelic riches. Over on Aquarium Drunkard last week, I wrote a bit about, Salt, Smith’s latest on Soft Abuse (released under the Ulaan Khol moniker), but it is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to exploring this guy’s fertile musical imagination. For a guide, I recommend hitting up Marc Masters’ Out Door column … and then just start digging in. I haven’t even scratched the surface, but I’ve loved everything I’ve checked out so far.

“To be honest, most of the time, I don’t really know what I’m doing, I’m just trying things. My goal is to create a situation where accidents can happen—hopefully good accidents. There’s never perfection; I’m not looking for that. I’m just looking to get something that I didn’t expect. Because then hopefully people listening will hear something that they weren’t expecting.”

Just dawned on me, after only now listening to the comp in its entirety, that it’s a collection of Prince covers (!). The spelling of the titles threw me off (”whn wr dncng cls & slw“, “hsqk”, “mnc mndy“), and they’re naturally anything but faithful to the material. Don’t take this as a sign of disrespect, Prince fans—G Frenzy covering “When You Were Mine” in earnest wouldn’t be worth anyone’s while. Compiled by Campbell Kneale (aka Birchville Cat Motel, Our Love Will Destroy The World) and features all the luminaries of the New Zealand experimental scene (Antony Milton, Witcyst, Armpit, 1/3 Octave Band, Birchville Cat Motel, and tons more). Appeared online for the first time a few weeks ago. If it’s an older release, Google shows no evidence of that, but it could have been put out a few years ago for all I know.

Flying Nun is in partnership with Mike Sniper Corp™. Xpressway has been out of commission for 20+ years. Most labels are only interested in reissuing NZ obscurities from the 80s, or releasing Chills “Live” 15xLP box sets. So where does this all leave the current state of New Zealand music? Well, over the last five years—thanks to labels like Melted Ice Cream, Muzai, Stabbiesetc, Fishrider, and a plethora of self-releases— their scene has reestablished itself, and done so without playing into the easy nostalgia of past glory. So here’s a three volume set that should give you a clear idea of how lively the country is right now. Aside from your occasional Axemen/Mad Scene/Futurians/Pumice/Bill Direen track, these comps feature mostly artists who’ve come about in the last half decade.

Pigeons tour US & unveil new single

Four years separate the version of Pigeons that made their new single Buoy (and their recent LP, The Bower, on Mie Music) and the version responsible for their previous full length, They Sweetheartstammers. In the interim the band relocated from Bronx, NY to an idyllic upstate setting, lost their rhythm section to Steve Gunn, helped realize the killer Black Dirt Oak ensemble record, and regrouped as a trio with the addition of drummer Rob Smith (Rhyton). Despite these shifts, Pigeons remains firmly grounded as an outlet for Wednesday Knudsen’s songs. The self-taught shredding guitarist, saxophonist and flautist and her partner Clark Griffin have been the core of the group since its inception as a murky free-form confusion band. The two songs that comprise Buoy find Pigeons in a dissonant yet pastoral pop mode, recalling Ghost, Future Games-era Fleetwood Mac, and Tommy Flanders’ The Moonstone, and undoubtedly indebted to their new environs.
