Hey artists, C. Spike Trotman, founder of Iron Circus Comics, just posted an invaluable thread on depicting different types of black hair. I’d do the thing where you screencap the whole thread and post it but it’s just too long (which is great because it’s a whole lot of useful information!) Give her a follow while you’re there.
Anyway, go check it out. I just wanted to save it and share it because I didn’t know how much I didn’t know!
This is an amazing resource, not only for artists, but for writers too! I love this!
{ID - tweet from @/Iron_Spike that reads, “Black Hair for Non-Black Artists: a Cheat Sheet Thread. Hi, folks! Just spur-of-the-moment decided to put together some reference for folks who want to draw/model black characters in their work, but arent confident they won’t make simple, obvious mistakes w/r/t black hair. *. a term for when your love for something feels crucial to your identity. you may feel that if you didn't love this thing, you would be fundamentally different.
*. the flag template is here!
*. note: subterms would be formatted as [thing] loviden (i.e. cat loviden), not lov[thing]iden. if you see the template's name look like the latter, it's because that was originally how i wanted to format it, changed my mind, and forgot to update the file name... oops!
Moon Loviden⠀⠀❀⠀⠀For when your love for the Moon feels crucial to your identity. You may feel that, if you didn't love the Moon, you'd be fundamentally different.
Mooncomfic is a gender related to feeling comforted by the moon or being so comforted by the moon that it becomes a part of your identity (not necessarily gender related)

Genderqueer — A term for people who have a non-normative gender identity, gender modality, and/or gender expression. In other words, it is a term for anyone who experiences and/or expresses gender in a queer way. This includes trans people, nonbinary people, gender nonconforming people, and anyone else who "queers" gender.
The term is often believed to be a synonym for nonbinary, but is actually broader in scope, and has its own history outside the nonbinary label. It is also sometimes considered more politically charged and transgressive in its language, due to the reclamation of "queer" as an identity.
Etymology, flag symbolism, and further info is below the cut. Fair warning: the full description of the flag symbolism is very long, though a TLDR version is also included.
Etymology — From "queer" (as in non-normative/LGBTQ+), with the additional specification of being queer in gender, rather than necessarily in one's attraction.
Flag Symbolism (TLDR) — Each stripe has its own meaning:
Lavender represents queerness and the epicene. It is at each end of the flag to signal its double meaning, as well as signal that it encompasses all stripes in between.
Blue represents any masculinity which subverts societal expectations (transmasculine people, masculine women, etc.)
White represents transition and inclusion. This also has two stripes, signaling its double meaning.
Yellow represents breaking the binary.
Pink represents any femininity which subverts societal expectations (transfeminine people, feminine men, etc.)
Flag Symbolism (Full Explanation) — I wanted to create an alternative to the lavender/white/green flag (which I will refer to as the common genderqueer flag) for a few reasons:
For one, the common genderqueer flag is visually similar to the UK suffragette flag, which has been heavily appropriated by TERFs. In fact, the flags are so similar that people sometimes buy the genderqueer flag specifically to use it as a UK suffragette flag. This can lead to confusion where a person believes that they're in the presence of a fellow genderqueer person or ally, when in reality, they're in the presence of a TERF. This can be potentially dangerous.
As another critique, the common genderqueer flag focuses on one specific type of genderqueer person (people who fit the definition of nonbinary), rather than broadly including all people whose gender identity, modality, or expression exists outside cultural expectations.
I'm also not a big fan of the common genderqueer flag on an aesthetic level, though this is not as important as my other critiques.
As a genderqueer person, I wanted to make a genderqueer flag that is more inclusive, less easily confused with symbols adopted by TERFs, and (according to my own preferences) more visually appealing. I put a lot of thought into it, so here’s a breakdown of the symbolism behind the stripes:
Lavender represents queerness and the epicene. Lavender is traditionally used to represent LGBTQ+ people, representing queerness. It is also a shade of purple (a combination of red/pink and blue, commonly gendered colors), representing the epicene (people whose identity, self expression, or sex cannot be strictly distinguished as either male or female, masculine or feminine). This is included at both the top and bottom of the flag, signaling its double meaning, as well as showing that everything between these stripes is encompassed by them.
Blue represents subversive masculinity. Blue is commonly used as a “masculine” color, and is used here to represent masculinity which subverts societal expectations. This includes masculine women, butches, transmasculine people, and anyone else whose masculinity defies the societal expectations placed on them.
White represents transition and inclusion. The white stripe in the trans flag represents the process of transitioning, among other things. In this flag, “transition” can refer to medical transition, social transition, or even just acknowledging to yourself that you’re trans. White is also the combination of all light, representing inclusion. This is used twice to signal its double meaning, but its placement among the other stripes was simply chosen for aesthetic reasons.
Yellow represents breaking the binary. Yellow is the opposite of purple (representing the binary in this case, rather than epicenity), showing a rejection or subversion of the gender and/or sex binary. This includes nonbinary people, altersex people, and intersex people whose intersex experience has impacted or “queered” their (relationship to) gender. This stripe was also heavily inspired by the use of yellow in the nonbinary and intersex flags.
Pink represents subversive femininity. Pink is commonly used as a “feminine” color, and is used here to represent femininity which subverts societal expectations. This includes feminine men, femmes, transfeminine people, and anyone else whose femininity defies the societal expectations placed on them.

Many neutral human traits have been simultaneously associated with femininity and stigmatized, artificialized, and denounced.
Now, some feminists solution is to disassociate with these traits as much as possible. This has the issue of not actually challenging the belief that these traits are inherently stupid or artificial. Ostracizing anyone who genuinely have these traits.
Other feminists have the opposite solution. To tout these traits has wholly good and superior. This has the issue of assuming these traits are actually inherently tied to womanhood. Implying that women are a different breed of human compared to men.
The correct solution, in my eyes, is to both destigmatize all these traits while also acknowledging they are not inherent parts of being a woman. Likewise, we should also dismantle the concept of "masculine traits".
ivyle - a gender similar to or related to male, but for those who are disconnected from maleness or masculinity, like their maleness or masculinity is off or atypical or different in some way from typical men. this is not being partially a man, but being 100% a separate, man-like gender. this gender may be masculine-aligned and/or male-aligned, but it doesnt have to be either. the ivyle equivalent of "man" is ivyn, "masculine" is "ivyline", and "boy" is "ivy".
