Chapter 5 Between Breath and Collapse of A step before the dance is up on AO3.
An Archive of Our Own, a project of the Organization for Transformative Works
ÂŤÂ It took me without resistance, dragging me under as though the boundary had been forced open from the other side.
There was not meeting it
Only being pulled through it
And then
Sebastian broke through it
His hand locked around my arm
The contact snapped something open rather than ending it like two realites colliding at the same point â¨Â Âť
This is a long chapter, sit down, take a sip and maybe cancel your plansâŚ
Summary: A quiet evening into the Common room turns into an argument, a confession half-spoken, and a dance that hasnât even begun yet. With the while Ball approaching, Sebastian Sallow is starting to realize something dangerous: the one thing he wants the most might be standing right in front of him.
Pairing: Sebastian Sallow x Original Female Character
Chapter 1: Between Shadows and Warmth
I pushed open the common roomâs heavy door, the soft creak familiar, almost comforting. The fire crackled in the hearth, casting golden shadows that danced across the empty common room. Outside, the cold night pressed gently against the windowpane. I sank into the sofa by the fire, pulling my robes snug around me, wrapping my arms across my chest. The warmth of the fire wrapped around me like a familiar blanket. Normally, Sebastian would have arrived by now. He was rarely late.
Iâd had a long day. Lessons, dueling practice, and a skirmish with Black Wizards had left my muscles sore, my mind buzzing, and my patience thin. I hugged myself a little tighter, feeling the warmth of the cushions beneath me. Minutes ticked by, the crackle of the fire and the distant echoes of footsteps the only sounds. Why hadnât he arrived yet? Heâs usually so punctual. Didnât he want to come tonight?
It had become a kind of ritual, meeting here after lessons, after practice, after the chaos of the day. Usually, Sebastian arrived on time, and we would talk, tease, or sometimes argue.
A month ago, he had called me ignorant... when I had spoken about my goblin friend, Logdok. He had apologized since, countless times, each carefully measured, but lingering in the air was the memory of that moment.
My thoughts drifted over the past two weeks. Something between us had shifted, subtle, electric, and undeniable. The way his hand brushed mine when passing a quill, lingering slightly longer than necessary. The warmth in his eyes when he found me across the hall. Even a fleeting touch, a lock of my hair twined between his fingers had left sparks trailing through me, a hum under my skin I couldnât name. Why does he affect me like this? Iâve never noticed it before⌠or maybe Iâve been too busy to see it?
I straightened slightly, drawing in a slow breath. This hour had become a quiet ritual, a place to reset after long, draining days. And yet tonight, anticipation made my limbs restless. And⌠the Yule Ball is coming soon. Perhaps this quiet moment is preparing me for something moreâsomething festive, daring, maybe even magical with Sebastian.
Most students had drifted off to their beds or tucked themselves away in corners, leaving only a few scattered figures. Somewhere faintly, I could hear laughter and the scrape of dancing shoes, a reminder that the Yule Ball was already stirring in the castle.
A soft rustle across the floor made me start.
It wasnât him.
Leander Prewett stepped into the firelight, casual and confident, a faint smile tugging at his lips. My chest sank with disappointment.
âYouâre hard to catch alone,â he said, leaning lazily against the sofa. âMind if I join you?â
âOf course,â I said politely, though unease tightened my chest.
âHow was dinner?â
âNot bad,â he replied, settling across from me.
I laughed lightly. âI like to make sure I get what I want before anyone else claims it.â
He grinned. âEfficiency. Admirable.â
âAnd yourself? Did you manage the pudding?â I asked.
âBarely,â he admitted, knee brushing mine for a fraction of a second. I stiffened subtly, shifting back.
âHeyâabout that homework we were working on earlierâŚâ
âYes?â I asked.
âIâm really glad we got to spend some time together doing it. I⌠I actually learn a lot faster when we work together. Watching you figure out the defensive wards, seeing your movements...â He gestured vaguely at his wand. âItâs easier to follow when you explain it. And, well⌠itâs nice. You know, just⌠spending time like this.â
I nodded politely. âIâm glad it helped,â I said softly. âBut I think youâre doing fine. Youâve got the motions down well enough now.â
He leaned a little closer, voice low and warm. âI know, but seeing you do it, step by step⌠itâs easier to remember. And I like the company. Makes the work feel less tedious.â
I shifted subtly, curling my fingers around the armrest.
âIâm happy to help,â I said gently. âBut Iâm fine on my own tonight.â
He smiled faintly, shoulder brushing mine. His nearness made me acutely aware of every small movement.
âI just thought⌠itâs nice we got to spend time together, you know? I donât always get to see your techniques up close. Makes me appreciate how precise you are.â
I drew back a fraction. âI appreciate that. Really. But weâve covered enough for one day.â
âYou deserve someone who actually notices you. Someone who values your time instead of taking it for granted. Someone who isnât always pulling you into his fights or sulking in the corner like a child.â
Before I could respond, he took my hand, warm against mine, trying to hold my attention. I pulled immediately back, but he held firm. My pulse raced.
A lady in a painting lifted her umbrella, her gesture practically scolding: âThatâs no way for a gentleman to treat a lady!â
âI donât think Sallow appreciates you the way I would. You deserve someone better⌠someone who notices you, truly notices you.â
I exhaled sharply, stepping back fully. âLeander, enough. And for the record, Sebastian does notice me. I donât need someone else telling me how I should be treated.â
He gave a sly smile, not letting go immediately. âIâm just saying what everyoneâs thinking. He doesnât deserve you. I would treat you better, youâd never have to fight for attention with me. Youâd never have to wonder if I care.â
I tugged my hand free, my chest tight with exasperation. âI said no, Leander. I donât need this discussion.â
Suddenly, Sebastian stormed in at the far edge of the common room, dark eyes blazing, filling the space instantly. Relief crashed over me.
âGet away from her, now!â His voice cut sharply through the quiet.
Leander straightened. âYou donât get to decide. Itâs up to her, not you.â
Sebastianâs jaw tightened, stepping closer with barely contained fury. âI know itâs up to her. And right now, she wants you gone.â
Leander pressed, voice smooth but daring. âI was only talking! She doesnât need a bodyguard breathing down her neck every time I speak to her.â
Sebastian snapped, voice ice and fire. âTalking doesnât include touching her, crowding her, or whispering lies about me in her ear. Youâve ignored her boundaries long enough.â
Leanderâs smirk faltered. âYou think you own her attention? Thatâs amusing.â
Sebastianâs glare sharpened. âAbsolutely not. But if you so much as think of crossing her again, I swear youâll regret it.â
My patience finally snapped. I slammed my fist onto the arm of the chair, startling both of them.
âReally, you two?!â
My voice rang sharp and tired, chest heaving from the long day.
Leander opened his mouth to argue again, but I leaned forward, hands pressing firmly on the armrests.
âLeander, I said no. Not maybe. Not later. No. Do you hear me? I donât need you questioning my every move, or touching my hand like that.â
His expression faltered, but he tried one last, soft attempt.
âI was onlyââ
âOnly what? Only pushing boundaries? Only ignoring every hint Iâve given? Only thinking itâs funny to crowd me after Iâve moved away?â
He swallowed, taking a reluctant step back. Finally, he coughed, muttered something sharp under his breath, and retreated.
Sebastian stepped closer, dark eyes softening. He pulled me into a warm hug. The hug was sudden, almost clumsy, but there was no mistaking the sincerity in it. His chest was warm, solid. His forehead brushed mine, chest steadying me. I let my tension melt into him.
âYou okay?â he asked softly.
I smiled, pressing slightly against him. âIâm glad you made it.â
âI wouldnât miss thisâŚâ he whispered, fingers brushing my hair gently.
âIâm sorry Iâm late,â he murmured, voice low, warm. âImelda was⌠well, she was battling my ears for taking a beater position on her team. Didnât realize sheâd get so dramatic⌠And Iâm sorry again. He was all over you. It crossed me.â
I shook my head, still tense but comforted. âYou stepped in at the right moment. I just⌠Iâve had a long day. Lessons, practicals, Black Wizards, and then Leander.â
He smiled faintly, pressing his cheek against my hair.
âIâm sorry I made it more complicated. I hate it when I get like that. You didnât deserve it.â
I leaned back just enough to meet his eyes. âNo, I didnât. And you will apologize to Leander. Heâs still a friend though a clingy one.â
That pulled the faintest crooked smile from him.
âMerlin, you donât let me off easy, do you?â
âNot when youâre being insufferable.â
I let out a small sigh, relaxing further into his chest.
âYouâre always so dramatic,â I teased, nudging him lightly. âBut⌠thanks.â
He chuckled softly. âI meant it. You didnât deserve that. Youâve done enough for today.â
I tilted my head back, smiling.
âWell⌠I suppose youâll make it up to me, then?â
His mouth curved. âAbsolutely. Come to the Yule Ball with me?â
I raised an eyebrow, a smile tugging at my lips. âTook you long enough.â
âSo thatâs a yes?â His grin widened, boyish, almost smug.
âYes,â I said, warmth spreading through me.
He laughed, shaking his head. âThen Iâll cancel with Samantha.â
âSebastian!â I gasped, grabbing a pillow from the armchair and hurling it at him.
He caught it easily, laughing, and when I reached for another, he caught my wrists, pulling me flush against him. His hands were warm, steady, grounding.
âIâm joking,â he said, eyes bright, leaning in, his hair brushing my temple. âI swear, Iâm joking, no way weâre not going together.â
I let out a breathless laugh, feeling the heat of his hand on mine, the gentle pressure of his chest, leaning slightly into him.
The fire popped behind us.
Sebastian loosened his grip on my wrists, but didnât step back. Not fully. The golden firelight danced across his cheekbones, softening the edge of his earlier fury. His grin slowly faded into something gentlerâsomething that felt like it settled right beneath my ribs.
And in that moment, though the ball had not yet come, I knew the dance had already begun.
âThen letâs make it official. Just one move, come on,â he said, grin mischievous.
Before I could protest, he twirled me lightly in a playful spin, guiding me through a simple dance step. I laughed, letting myself be carried by the warmth and playfulness of the moment.
âSee?â he said, catching my gaze as we finished the turn. âPerfect. Youâd put half the students at the ball to shame.â
I smiled. And for the first time that evening, everything felt exactly right.
For a moment, neither of us spoke. The chatter from a few lingering students drifted faintly through the common room, but all you could hear was the steady rise and fall of Sebastianâs breath, still just a bit uneven from the confrontation.
Then he murmured, âYou know⌠when I saw him leaning over you like that, I nearly hexed him into the spot.â
I snorted. âSebastian, you nearly hex people for breathing too loudly.â
He pressed a hand dramatically to his heart. âOnly the ones who deserve it.â
His tone was light, but beneath it, you felt something deeper, an unspoken relief. He brushed a bit of ash-dusted hair from my cheek with a touch so feather light it almost didnât feel like him.
âYouâre sure youâre alright?â he asked again, softer this time.
I leaned forward, pressing my forehead briefly to his, letting your eyes close. âIâm better now.â
For a heartbeat, he stilled.
And then, as if realizing how close we stood, his fingers brushed mine again. Tentative. Testing. I didnât pull away.
His breath caught. âCan IâŚ?â
He didnât finish the sentence. He didnât need to.
I nodded.
Slowly, almost reverently, he took my hand, interlacing our fingers in a way that made my pulse flutter wildly. His thumb warm and steady, brushed the back of my knuckles once, and I swear the world tilted. No
âGoodâ he whispered. âBecause I want our night at the Yule Ball to be perfect. No Leander. No drama.â
I tilted my head, a teasing spark breaking through the exhaustion. âYou planning something, Sallow?â
âOh, plenty,â he smirked. âBut youâll have to wait.â
I rolled my eyes and stepped back at last, stretching out the lingering ache in my shoulders. âFine. But if it involves dragons, cursed masks, or accidentally summoning a banshee...â
âAccidentally is such a strong word,â he protested, grinning.
I laughedâactually laughedâand the knot in my chest finally loosened. The fire crackled, warm and familiar, and Sebastian slung an arm casually around my shoulders as you both turned toward the dorm hall.
âCome on,â he said softly. âYouâve done enough heroics for one day.â
And for the first time all day, I didnât feel exhausted. Just warm.
The walk toward the dorm hall was gentle, unhurried, wrapped in the hush that settles over the castle when most of the world has already slipped into dreams. Sebastian kept his arm draped over my shouldersânot possessive, not tense, just⌠steady. Protective in the way someone is when they finally let themselves care out loud.
When we reached the hallway outside my room, he slowed to a stop. The torches flickered low, casting a warm amber glow along the stone floor. The air was cool here, quiet in a way that felt almost sacred.
Sebastian didnât drop his arm right away. Instead, he turned slightly toward you, his brow softening. âYou seem lighter,â he murmured. âIâm glad.â
I exhaled, leaning my shoulder into his. âItâs⌠quieter. And I think my head finally stopped spinning.â
He let out a low, relieved chuckle. âFunny. Mine started spinning the moment I saw Leander leaning over you like that.â
I nudged him gently. âSebastian, if you tense up every time someone breathes near me, youâre going to sprain something.â
âOh, Iâve already accepted that fate,â he said with a dramatic sigh. Then, softer: âBut seriously⌠you handled him beautifully. You didnât need me.â
I tilted my head to look at him. âMaybe not. But I wanted you there.â
That landed. His breath pausedâjust enough that I noticed. His fingers brushed mine in a light, sweeping motion, hesitant for only a second before he took my hand fully. His thumb traced a small, absent pattern across my skin.
âI like being the one you want,â he whispered.
I felt something warm coil low in my chest, gentle and shy and fond. He wasnât flirting now. Not deflecting with bravado. His voice was quiet, like he was afraid of breaking something delicate.
I squeezed his hand. âThen stay for a bit. Just⌠here.â
His smile returnedâsmall, but glowing. âGladly.â
He slid down the wall to sit on the floor, back against cool stone, legs stretched out comfortably. He patted the spot beside him with exaggerated flourish.
I sank down next to him, close enough that our shoulders touched. The quiet around you was soft, broken only by the faint crackle of a torch and the distant hum of enchanted sconces. Sebastian let his head tip to the side, brushing lightly against my temple.
After a moment, he spoke again, voice barely above a whisper. âYou know⌠when you said yes to the Yule Ball, I felt like Iâd just won a duel I didnât even know Iâd entered.â
I laughed under your breath. âReally? Why?â
âBecause,â he said, eyes drifting closed as he leaned back, âfor once, something I wanted insât slipping away.â
My heart clenchedânot in pain, but in something achingly soft.
âSebastianâŚâ you murmured.
He didnât open his eyes, but his fingers found yours again, weaving together lazily. âIâm not trying to be dramatic. I just⌠everythingâs been so complicated these few months. Anneâs curse, Dark wizards. pressure from professors. You nearly getting killed every other week. And then tonightâseeing you so⌠tired. I hated it.â
I rested your head gently against his shoulder. âTonight was messy. But right now isnât.â
He hummed in agreementâa low, content sound. âRight now might be my favorite moment of the entire term.â
âWasn't when we fed the giant red squid a peanut butter sandwich during our festive picnic to celebrate your Quidditch team victory?â I teased, trying to ease the tension.
He laughed. âOkay, fine⌠thatâs a very close second.â
I smiled, letting my eyes slide shut too. The stone floor wasnât comfortable. The air was cool. But the warmth between youâshoulder to shoulder, hand in handâmade the world feel safe, still, and wonderfully simple.
After a while, he spoke again, barely audible. âCan we⌠just stay like this? For a little longer?â
I laced your fingers more tightly with his and whispered, âAs long as you want.â
His breath eased. His shoulder relaxed beneath me. And in the quiet hallway, far past curfew and miles past exhaustion, the two of us simply existed, warm, close, steady, as if nothing outside that moment could touch us.
The quiet wrapped around the two of us like a blanket. Minutes drifted by warm and steady. Sebastianâs thumb traced slow, absent circles against my fingers, and gradually his breathing shifted, deepening in that unmistakable way that meant he was starting to drift.
I felt his shoulder sink a little more firmly against mine.
Then he murmured, voice thick with sleep, âIâm not tired.â
I smiled. âMhm. Right.â
He made a small, disgruntled sound. âIâm not. Iâm just⌠resting my eyes. The hallway torches are too bright.â
I tilted my head so it touched his, my voice playful but gentle. âWeâre literally sitting in the darkest corner of the floor.â
He exhaled a laugh, soft, warm, the sound vibrated through my shoulder. But then the laughter faded into something quieter. Thoughtful.
âYou scared me today,â he whispered.
My breath caught. âWhat do you mean?â
âYou looked so worn down after that fight with dark wizards. And I know you can handle yourself, butâŚâ He swallowed, jaw tightening for a beat before his voice dropped to a confession-soft murmur. âI canât stand the thought of anything happening to you. Not after everything weâve been through.â
I turned my head slightly, cheek brushing his shoulder. âSebastianâŚâ
He finally opened his eyes, looking down at where our fingers intertwined. âI know I joke. I know I posture. But the truth is...I care about you more than I know how to put into words. Every time I see you exhausted or hurt or pushing yourself too far, it guts me. And I keep worrying Iâll lose you before I ever get the chance toâŚâ His voice trailed, gentle but trembling at the edges. âTo be honest about what you mean to me.â
My heart beat a little too loudly in your chest.
âAnd what do you mean?â I whispered.
He looked up at me, eyes dark and unguarded. âEverything I shouldnât hope forâŚ. And I want to go to the Yule Ball with you,â he murmured, ânot because itâs fun, or expected, or because I like showing off. I want to go with you because that feels⌠good. Right. Like Iâm finally moving toward something instead of losing it.â
My chest tightened with warmth, a slow, bright glow. âSebastianâŚâ
He smiled, a tiny, unsteady thing. âI didnât mean to say all of that tonight. But then againâŚâ
Footsteps echoed around the corner.
We both jerked upright at the same time, bumping headsâhard.
âOwâMerlinâsâwhatââ
âOwâSebastian!â
From down the hall came a startled squeak.
A second-year stood frozen, clutching a stack of books to their chest, eyes wide as saucers. âS-sorry! I didnât meanâI wasnâtâgoodnight!â They bolted down the corridor with the speed of a hunted snidget.
Sebastian pinched the bridge of his nose. âBrilliant. Exactly how I wanted that moment immortalized.â
I snorted, leaning into him again. âRelax. He probably thinks weâre doing homework.â
âWe were sitting on the floor holding hands,â he argued. âHe thinks weâre courting on the hallway tiles like absolute degenerates.â
I dissolved into laughter, and after a second, he joined meâquietly, shaking his head, cheeks warm with embarrassment and something sweeter.
When the giggles faded, he looked at me again, expression softening in a way that made the silence feel suddenly intimate again.
ÂŤSebastian..I Âť
A group of girls passed, giggling.
I whispered, âWalk me to my door?â
âOf course.â
He rose, pulling me gently up with him. The short walk to my room felt softer than footsteps had any right to feel. When I reached my door, he stopped, hands lingering around mine like he didnât want to let go.
Just before we reached the stairs, he paused and looked at me again, expression earnest.
âAnd⌠thank you,â he said.
âFor what?â
âFor choosing me, earlier.â
My heart stuttered.
âI didnât choose you,â I whispered, stepping closer. âI wanted you.â
Sebastian froze, breath visibly catching, the kind of moment that felt like it might imprint itself on the stone walls.
Slowly, a smile unsteady, stunned, utterly genuineâspread across his face.
âThen I guess,â he murmured, voice low and reverent, âthat makes two of us.â
âGoodnight,â he said, voice warm and low.
I stepped closer and whispered, âGoodnight, Sebastian.â
His eyes flicked to my lips for a heartbeat, but he didnât push. Didnât step forward. He just let out a breath, soft and dazzled, like Iâd cast a spell without a wand.
âSleep well,â he murmured.
âYou too.â
I slipped into my dorm room, closing the door softly behind me. I caught one last glimpse of him in the hallway, leaning back against the stone, grinning like someone whoâd finally let himself hope.
He walked, hands in his pockets, humming to himself as he made his way to his dorm.
As he turned a corner and I lost sight of him, the quiet hit me immediately but my mind was anything but calm.
I leaned back against the door, exhaling a breath I didnât realize Iâd been holding. My hand was still tingling where Sebastian had held it, like his warmth had sunk into my skin and refused to leave.
Merlin.
I pressed my palm to my chest.
What was that?
He had looked at me like⌠like I was something he couldnât quite believe was real. And that moment outside my door. I could feel his breath on my cheek...my whole body had gone still, waiting, anticipating, hoping.
Even now, my heart fluttered wildly at the memory: the way heâd tucked that strand of hair behind my ear, fingers lingering just a second too long; the softness in his voice when he said I was going to be the end of him; the way heâd hesitated like he was fighting himself not to lean in.
He could have kissed me.
He almost did.
And the most dangerous part?
I realized, I wouldâve let him.
I covered my burning face with my hands and groaned quietly into them. âThis is ridiculous,â I whispered to no one. But the warmth in my chest only deepened.
I crossed the room in a daze, pulling off my robes, slipping into something soft and warm. My bed felt impossibly inviting, but my thoughts were buzzing far too loudly for sleep.
I lay back anyway, staring up at the canopy, replaying every second of that walk up the stairs. Every brush of his fingers. Every smile that didnât feel like the teasing mask he usually wore. Every small moment when heâd almost said something more, something deeper.
He had been nervous.
Sebastian Sallow. Nervous.
Because of me.
The thought sent a shiver through me, sweet, giddy, terrifying.
I turned onto my side, pulling the blankets to my chin. In the dim glow from the dying embers in the hearth, his face drifted through my mind again: the warmth in his eyes, the hesitation in his voice, the way he had looked at me like he was choosing his next step carefully, like it was important.
Maybe it was.
Maybe tonight had shifted something between us, something fragile, something real, something that had been building quietly.
And the Yule BallâŚ
I felt a smile pull at my lips, small and secret.
My eyelids grew heavy, warmth spreading through me in slow, gentle waves. wrapped in that comfort, I finally drifted off to sleep, heart full, thoughts tangled with him in every possible way. As I slipped into slumber.

Notes:
This story is what I needed at the end of the game. Enjoy!
It was the very beginning of summer vacation at Hogwarts. The air was warm, rich with the scent of grass and wildflowers, and filled with the promise of freedom.
I still had one week before returning to London, to the familiar chatter of my family and the gentle hum of the Muggle world. But for now, Hogwarts felt suspended in time, as if the castle itself were holding its breath. And yet, beneath the calm, something stirred in me. A quiet pull, persistent and aching.
Leaving without seeing Sebastian? Unthinkable.
Not like this. Not with so much left unsaid, and so much still fragile between us. There were words waiting...heavy with silence, delicate as threads. We needed to speak them aloud before they unraveled with the fading summer light.
Even if it hurt. Even if it changed everything.
He needed me. I felt it as surely as I felt the air in my lungs. And the truth, whispered low in the back of my mind, was that I needed him just as much. Maybe more than I cared to admit.
So I followed the pull, not just for him...but for me too. For us.
My feet carried me down toward the Dark Lake, guided more by instinct than intention. The air grew quieter the farther I walked.
Down by the Dark Lake, the light had taken on a dreamlike quality. The setting sun bled soft hues of rose-gold and lavender into the sky, and wisps of pink-tinged cloud drifted lazily above the horizon. The lake caught it all, reflecting the colors in gentle ripples that shimmered like painted silk.
I spotted Sebastian sitting alone on a slope that overlooked the still water. His posture was rigid, arms resting on his knees, his gaze distant, fixed somewhere far beyond the waterâs surface. The pink light kissed the edge of his profile, casting his face in a warm and gentle glow. His skin was brushed by the last blush of day, and where the sunlight touched his hair, it shimmered like burnished copper. He looked beautiful in that light. Sad, yes, but beautiful.
As I approached, the lakeâs surface rippled softly despite the still air, glowing faintly with a pale pink hue as if the water itself was alive with magic and reflecting the blush of the sky above. Tiny will-oâ-the-wisps drifted just above the shore, their soft amber light pulsing gently, mirroring the fragile hope blooming between us.
The grass crunched lightly beneath my shoes. Sebastian heard me and turned, the tension in his shoulders loosening slightly when his eyes met mine. The look he gave me shifted, surprise melting into a quiet, relieved pleasure, like the sudden appearance of sunlight after a long stretch of rain.
I reached out a hand to him
âLetâs get cozy,â I said, a small smile tugging at my lips.
He took my hand and rose to meet eye to eye.
âLead the way,â he answered softly.
âHow are you?â I asked.
Sebastian sighed deeply, his expression growing solemn, shadowed by the weight of the guilt he carried. âIâve had a lot on my mind,â he said, his voice quiet. The memory of his uncleâs death flickered behind his eyes, a dark, stubborn shadow that refused to fade.
âI know,â I said gently, settling against the trunk of an old tree. I patted my lap with a small smile.
âCome. Put your head here. I used to do that for my brother when he was troubled.â
He gave me a teasing smile. âAre you saying you see me as your brother?â
I laughed, shaking my head. âNo! not at all.â
He hesitated then settled his head on my lap, closing his eyes and letting out a contented sigh.
âMm, this is nice,â he murmured. âYour lap is the perfect pillow.â
I placed my hand on his chest and began tracing small, soothing circles. My fingers felt the steady beat of his heart beneath his robes. Around us, the leaves rustled with soft murmurs.
"Comfortable?"
Sebastian relaxed further, nodding. âVery. Keep going...it feels wonderful.â
I combed my fingers through his hair slowly, savoring its softness.
Somewhere in the distance, birds sang , their notes clear, like a lullaby echoing through the trees.
After a while, he whispered, âI donât know if I deserve this.â His voice trembled slightly âNot after everything Iâve done.â
I paused, my hand still on his chest, waiting.
He brought a forearm up to cover his eyes, as if blocking out the memory or hiding from it.
He swallowed hard. âThe night I⌠when I killed my uncle⌠it wasnât supposed to happen like that.â
His voice was low and raw. âI never meant to hurt him. I was trying to save Anne. But I used dark magic, and I lost control. Iâve replayed that moment over and over,â he whispered. âWishing Iâd justâstopped. Said something, anything, before it was too late.â
His fingers clenched lightly against my knee, betraying the turmoil beneath his calm exterior.
âI donât know how to forgive myself,â he murmured. âOr face what Iâve become.â
I reached up and gently took his forearm, guiding it away from his face. He didnât resist.
He shifted slightly, lifting his head just enough to meet my eyes, a flicker of vulnerability breaking through. âTell me⌠how come you havenât rejected me for this? For what I did?â
I smiled gently, brushing a stray lock of hair from his forehead. âBecause youâre more than your mistakes, Sebastian. Everyone carries darkness, what matters is what we do after. I see you, the real you. The boy whoâs brave enough to carry this burden and still reach out for light.â
He settled back against me, a shaky breath escaping him. âThank you,â he whispered. âItâs hard to believe things can get lighter⌠but right now, this feels like a small miracle.â
âSometimes I wonder if the people I hurt even want to hear from me again. If I even deserve their forgiveness.â
I tightened my fingers gently around his hand.
âForgiveness isnât about deserving it, Sebastian. Itâs about healing. You donât have to carry this alone anymore.â
He let out a long breath, closing his eyes again.
âI want to believe that. I want to be better. For you, for Ominis, for myself.â
He shifted slightly, lifting his head just enough to meet my gaze. For a heartbeat, something broke through the darkness, a flicker of vulnerability.
âIâll try to talk to Ominis,â I said softly, my voice steady despite the tightness in my chest. âSee if thereâs a way to mend things before sixth year. I canât promise itâll work, but⌠I can promise Iâll try.â
He looked down at our intertwined hands.
âI donât think heâll want to speak to me. I broke something between us. And maybe he wonât want to fix it. Maybe I donât deserve it. And honestly⌠I donât blame him. I wouldnât either.â
âYou donât know that yet,â I said gently. âBut youâll never be able to make it right if you keep standing in the ruins without trying to rebuild.â
âIâve been⌠awful,â he admitted, the words thick in his throat. âNot just distant. I pushed him awayâhard. And I knew what I was doing when I did it. I just... couldnât stop. The decisions I was making...each one worse than the last. I didnât want to hear reason, and Ominis was always reason. Âť
He finally looked up at me, eyes brimming with unshed emotion. âBut if he could ever⌠even just talk to me again, Iâd do anything to make it right. Iâd give anything to not be the person I was in those moments.â
âThen Iâll try,â I said. âFor both of you.â
Sebastian gave a slow nod, his throat moving as he swallowed hard. âThank you. Really. I donât know what Iâd do without you.â
Sebastian fell quiet for a long time. Then, barely louder than the rustling leaves, he whispered,âI shouldâve been there. When you lost Professor Fig⌠I shouldâve stood by your side.â
I blinked, surprised by the sudden shift. That ache, still sharp, still raw, surged in my chest.
âI missed him,â I said softly. âMore than I let on.
He looked at me, regret etched into his face.
âI know how close you were to him,â he said. âHow much he meant to you. And I...I wasnât there when it mattered most. I was drowning in my own guilt and anger, but thatâs no excuse. You fought for all of us, and I didnât even notice you were hurting too.â
His words hit something raw and buried. I blinked again, but the tears welled up anyway, blurring the edges of the world.
Sebastian reached up, wordlessly, and brushed the tears from beneath my eyes with the pad of his thumb. His touch was tender, no rush, no pressure, just quiet understanding.
Our gazes met, and something in his expression softened even more.
I gave him a small, tearful smile. âThank you.â
He returned it, just as softly. âAlways.â
âHe⌠he was more than a teacher,â I whispered, my voice barely steady. âHe believed in me when no one else did. He saw me. Not just the magic I could do, but me. Every time I stumbled, every time I doubted myself, he reminded me I was capable of more. Losing himâŚâ My voice cracked. âIt felt like losing the last thread holding everything together.â I traced the rim of his cloak. âI donât know how to say goodbye to someone who was more family than just a teacher.Âť
âIâm so sorry,â he said quietly. âI shouldâve seen that. You carried that grief alone. You didnât have to face that pain by yourself.â
âWe both lost people we loved, Sebastian. We were both drowning. And maybe we couldnât save each other back then.â
âBut we can now,â he said softly. âI donât want to face anything without you anymore.â
I nodded, emotion thick in my throat. âThen we donât. From now on, we face it all together.â
He gave a small, tremulous smile and held out his pinky. âPinky swear?â
I laughed wetly and hooked mine with his. âPinky swear.â
âFrom now on, I want to be the one who celebrates your victories, no matter how big or small. The one who lifts you up when everything feels like itâs crashing down. And the one who stays by your side when the nights get too dark to face alone.â
His voice grew softer, full of quiet determination. âBecause you donât have to carry any of this alone anymore, not your pain, not your fears, not your hopes.â
I felt a rush of emotion, nodding slowly. âAnd I promise Iâll be there for you, too. Every step of the way.â
âI donât want to lose you too,â he said softly.
âYou wonât,â I promised. âNot now. Not ever.â
A small, genuine smile appeared on his face, catching the last warmth of the sun.
âThank you,â he murmured again. âFor everything.â
I gave his hand a gentle squeeze. âAlways.â
The evening breeze rustled through the trees as we settled back on the grass, our shoulders just barely touching. The pink sky deepened into twilight, and the first stars began to appear.
Sebastianâs voice dropped to a whisper. âSometimes Iâm scared. Not just of what Iâve done⌠but of who I might become. What if the darkness inside never really fades?â
I stayed close, turning to meet his gaze with steady warmth. âWe all carry shadows, Sebastian. What matters is what we do with them. Youâre more than your mistakes.â
He swallowed, fragile hope flickering in his eyes. âHow can you be so sure?â
I traced a finger along his jaw, smiling softly.
âBecause I see the person you are now, someone brave enough to face the past and still reach for something better. Thatâs strength, not weakness.â
He exhaled slowly, the tension in his shoulders loosening just a bit. âI want to believe that. But sometimes, the darkness feels endless.â
I tucked a stray lock of hair behind his ear, offering a gentle smile. âThen weâll face it together. One day at a time. And if the night ever feels too long, Iâll be here, holding you through it.â
A quiet smile curved his lips. âWith you⌠maybe I can believe that after all.â
âWeâll believe it, together.â
I ran my fingers slowly through his hair, tracing soft, lazy circles on his scalp, feeling the tension melt beneath my touch. His chest rose and fell gently under my hand, each breath easing a little more.
I pressed my lips against his temple, whispering âYou donât have to carry this alone, Sebastian. Not now, not ever.â
His fingers curled around mine, gripping tightly as if to hold onto that promise physically. His body relaxed against me, the tight coil of anxiety slowly unwinding.Gradually, his hands softened in mine, his body still close but no longer tense.
âThank you,â he breathed, barely audible
I leaned in, resting my forehead against his.
âAlways.â
His eyes fluttered closed, and I could feel him melting into the earth, the tension unraveling like thread.
âYour hands feel like magic,â he murmured. âI could fall asleep like this.â
âYou can, if you want.â
A faint smile touched his lips. âMaybe I will. Just for a little while.â
About twenty minutes later, he stirred with a soft groan, eyelids fluttering open.
âWhat time is it?â he asked, voice rough from sleep.
âYou slept for twenty minutes.â
âOnly? Felt like hours.â He glanced up at me. âDid I drool on you or something?â
I laughed softly. âNo, but you looked⌠peaceful. And kind of beautiful.â
He flushed, rubbing the back of his neck. âBeautiful, huh? Probably looked ridiculous, napping on your lap like a kid.â
âI donât see you that way, Sebastian.â
His eyes met mine, serious and warm. He shifted slightly, lifting a hand to my cheek.
âThank you.â
âGlad to be of service.â
âYouâre not just âof service,ââ he said with a voice filled with a tenderness that made my heart ache. âYouâre⌠a light, maybe the only one Iâve had this year. Just being near you makes the darkness inside me feel less suffocating, like I can breathe again.â
His eyes searched mine, vulnerable and honest, as if afraid this moment might slip away. âYouâve been my safe plac, the one who stays when everything else runs. My comfort, my strength. Honestly, thereâs no one Iâd rather explore a dark, cursed cave with,â he smiled, a small, genuine curve of his lips.
He squeezed my hand, a fragile plea hidden in that simple gesture. âBut I want you to know, what youâve given me means more than I can say.â
I smiled softly, my fingers tightening around his hand. âSebastian, you donât have to deserve me. You donât need to earn my presence or my trust. What matters is that youâre here, that youâre trying even when itâs hard. And for what itâs worth, I choose you, every day.â
I paused, then added softly, âBut I need something from you.â
He looked into my eyes, steady and serious.
âPromise me you wonât ever use dark magic again. Not ever, No matter how hopeless things feel. No matter how strong the temptation.â
âI promise, I wonât use it. Ever again.â
The vow settled between us like something sacred, invisible but unshakable.
âI mean it,â he continued, voice steadier now. âNo matter what happens. Iâve lost too much already⌠I wonât lose you too. I wonât lose myself again.â
For a moment, I just looked at him not as the boy whoâd wielded forbidden spells with shaking hands, not as the friend who had strayed too close to the edge but as someone fighting his way back from the dark, inch by inch.
He hesitated, as though the words were fragile in his mouth, too delicate to release. âBefore everything went to hell⌠you and Anne, you connected. I could see it. She trusted you.â
There was a flicker of something in his eyes, longing, pain, hope all tangled together. He looked down briefly, gathering himself.
âIf she ever writes to you⌠or finds a way to reach out, will you tell me? Even if she doesnât want to speak to me, just knowing sheâs out there, still thinking about any of this⌠it would mean everything.â
âI donât even know where she isâif sheâs safe, if sheâs okay. I tell myself sheâs better off, free from all of this⌠but Merlin, I miss her.â
He finally looked back up at me, something raw shining in his gaze. âIf she ever contacts you...please, promise me I wonât be the last to know.â
I nodded solemnly. âI promise. If Anne contacts me, youâll be the first to know.â
A small, relieved smile broke through the weight on his face. âThank you. That⌠that means more than I can say.â
He stared at me for a long, charged moment, his eyes searching, vulnerable, like he was trying to memorize every detail of my face. The world seemed to hold its breath around us.
Slowly, almost reverently, he leaned forward. His fingers brushed my cheek with a delicate tenderness, as if I were something fragile and precious. The warmth of his touch sent a shiver down my spine.
âI really want to kiss you right now,â he whispered, his voice trembling with honesty and longing. âMay I?â
My breath caught, heart pounding like a drum in my chest. For a moment, time seemed to stretch, the space between us electric and full of promise.
My breath caught in my throat. I nodded, barely able to speak. âYes.â
He didnât rush. He leaned in slowly, as if he wanted to remember every second leading up to the moment. His hands found my faceâwarm, a little shaky, cradling me like I was something fragile, something he didnât quite believe was his to touch.
And then his lips met mine.
The world stilled. There was no castle, no lake, no time. Just the softness of his mouth, the way his breath hitched as he kissed me like it was both a question and an answer. His lips were warm, unsure at first, almost like he was afraid he might do it wrong, but the longer the kiss lasted, the more he sank into it, and into me.
He deepened the kiss gently, his fingers threading through my hair, pulling me closer like he needed to be sure I was real. My hands clutched at the front of his robes, grounding myself in the heat of him, the dizzy rush of closeness. I could feel this kiss was undoing something painful inside him.
He sighed against my mouth, and the sound, quiet, desperate, tender, sent a shiver down my spine.
There was no urgency, no rush to devour. Just warmth, breath, and the overwhelming sense that we had been holding this in for far too long. Every brush of his lips said Iâve waited, Iâve hoped, Iâm here.
When we finally pulled apart, we were breathless. His forehead rested lightly against mine, eyes fluttering closed for a moment like he didnât want to break the spell.
âIâve wanted to do that for ages,â he murmured, voice rough with emotion. âI didnât know it would feel like⌠this.â
âMe too,â I whispered, brushing my thumb over his cheek. âBut nothing couldâve prepared me for how right it feels.â
âWeâve been dancing around this forever,â I said, smiling.
He gave a crooked grin. âI thought I was being obvious.â
âTo who?â I laughed. âYour owl?â
He chuckled, shaking his head. âHonestly⌠Since the beginning, itâs always been you. I just didnât know how to say it until now . But it was worth the wait.â
âIt was,â I agreed, my cheeks warm.
I brushed my thumb softly over my lips, still feeling the echo of his kiss.
His eyes searched mine. âWait⌠was that your first kiss?â
âIt was,â I admitted, voice soft.
He blinked, surprised. âReally?â
I smiled, a little shy. âThere were a few awkward almost-kisses before. But nothing like this. Nothing that mattered.â
A silence settled, comfortable, full of warmth and quiet understanding.
âHave you ever⌠gone further?â I asked gently.
He shook his head. âNo. Iâve kissed before, but thatâs it. Fifteen just⌠doesnât feel like the time for more. Not yet.â
His voice lowered again, playful now. âBut now that Iâve kissed you, I want more. Not just physically. I want you. Your time, your thoughts, your presence. I think Iâm addicted to how you make me feel.â
I laughed quietly. âYouâll get more. Within the extent of decorum, of course and when it feel right for the both of us.Âť
âOf course,â he said with a wink. âBut just so you know⌠I plan on memorizing every detail of your lips.â
I smiled and cupped his face gently, thumb brushing his cheek. âPlease do.â
Feeling warmth spread through me as I cupped his face gently, my thumb tracing slow, tender circles on his cheek. His skin was soft beneath my touch, slightly flushed from the kiss.
For a moment, we simply held each otherâs gaze, words unnecessary, the space between us charged with a quiet intimacy that felt both new and deeply familiar.
âFeeling better?â I asked softly, a gentle invitation to stay in this moment just a little longer.
He nodded slowly, eyes shimmering with a softness that made my chest ache with something like hope. âI am, He nodded, eyes soft and warm. âI am. You have this way of making everything feel⌠lighter.â
He smirked. âIâm imagining the chaos when everyone realizes weâre together. The shocked faces, the gossip flying around Hogwarts..."
I raised an eyebrow playfully. âWell, we might as well give them something juicy to whisper about.â
He laughed, warmth lighting up his eyes. âYeah, let the rumors begin.â
The night air became cooler around us, and for a heartbeat, everything felt perfectâuntil suddenly, his gaze sharpened, a flicker of panic breaking through.
âOh⌠the holidays are coming,â he said, voice a little panicked, like heâd just remembered the clock ticking down. âYouâre really leaving soon.â
He looked at me, a bit desperate. ÂŤHow am I supposed to survive the holidays without you?â
I smiled softly, feeling a warmth spread in my chest at his honest worry. âIâll write you every single day. You wonât even have a chance to get lonely..Think of it as your personal lifeline with bonus sarcasm included.â
He laughed, eyes sparkling with relief. âOkay, okay. Maybe the holidays wonât be so bad after all. As long as I get my daily dose of you.â
He pulled me closer, his eyes locking with mine. âItâs going to be long without your touch, though.â
I smiled softly, resting my cheek against his. âMaybe I can ask my parents if you can visit...even just for a few days.â
âSeriously?â he asked, a hopeful spark lighting his eyes.
I nodded. âSeriously.â
A pause, then I tilted my head, curious. âHave you ever been to London?â
He shook his head. ÂŤ No. Iâve always meant to, but⌠never had a reason to go.â
âWell,â I said, feeling excitement bubble in my chest, ÂŤnow you do . I said, a grin tugging at my lips. I canât wait to show you my favorite cafĂŠs, libraries, and little theaters. Âť
He smiled âThat sounds... perfect.â
âI think youâll love it,â I said, brushing my fingers against his collar. âItâs messy and loud and full of stories. Like you. I want you to see the world I come from. And I want you in it.â
He laughed, warm and bright. âAlright then. Take me to your world, love Âť
He continued. âYou know, after all this talk about the holidays and London... thereâs something else Iâm glad about.â
I raised an eyebrow. âOh? Whatâs that? Âť
âWe both passed our O.W.L.s,â he said with a grin. âNo small feat, considering everything going on.â
I chuckled, feeling a surge of pride.âYeah, and with the way we aced those exams, I think that calls for a proper celebration.â
He nodded, eyes sparkling. âExactly. And honestly, a trip to London would be the perfect way to celebrate, a reward for all our hard work and a chance to make some new memories before the next chaos hits.â
I smiled, leaning my head on his shoulder.
âAgreed. But for now, letâs just enjoy this moment. We deserve it.â
I tilted my head, teasing, âAnd how exactly should I introduce you to my parents? âFriendâ? âFellow studentâ?â
He tapped my lower lip with a grin. âTell them Iâm your boyfriend. That should be clear enough.â
I arched an eyebrow, lips twitching. âOh? Confident, are we?â
He chuckled, a soft, almost shy sound. âWell⌠Iâm hopeful.â
I leaned in just a little, our noses nearly brushing. âAre you my boyfriend then?â
He held my gaze, eyes warm and unflinching. âIâd like to be. If youâll have me.â
I let the silence stretch for a beat, pretending to consider it, even though my heart was already answering. âHmm⌠I suppose I could do worse.â
He laughed, a low, relieved sound, and gently bumped his forehead against mine. âRuthless.â
I smiled and slid my arms around his shoulders, pulling him closer. âYes,â I whispered. âIâll have you.â
His eyes searched mine, and for a moment, the playful spark gave way to something deeper, full of wonder, like he couldnât quite believe this was real.
âGood,â he murmured. âBecause Iâm already yours.â
And in that quiet, I felt it, that shift. From teasing and sweetness to something steadier, more certain. Something that might just last.
âCome on. Letâs go write that letter,â I said. âAnd be warned! Youâll have to win over my owl, Athena. Sheâs extremely selective.â
He chuckled, forehead still resting against mine. âIâll charm her eventually. If sheâs anything like you, she wonât be able to resist my charm .â
I laughed, and we stood, fingers still intertwined. His touch warmed me like sunlight through winter glass.
We walked side by side toward the castle, the golden-pink glow of sunset wrapping us in quiet magic. The light shimmered faintly around us, like the world itself was holding its breath, just for this.
As we stepped into the cool hush of the castle, the protective enchantments whispered faintly in the air. Hogwarts felt calmer than usual, as if it, too, was listening.
Inside my dorm, the familiar scent of parchment, worn leather, and warm oak welcomed us. The fireplace crackled gently, its flames shifting from gold to violet, echoing the mood in the room, peaceful, full of quiet hope.
âI share this room with Imelda,â I explained, slipping off my cloak. âBut sheâs already gone home to Edinburgh for the holidays.â
Sebastianâs eyes swept around the dormitory, taking in the worn wooden desk cluttered with books and parchment, the neatly made bed with its patchwork quilt, and the posters of Quidditch teams pinned to the walls. The room smelled faintly of parchment and lavender, a quiet sanctuary from the chaos of the castle.
He smiled softly âItâs cozy. I like it.â
Before I could turn back, Sebastian tugged me toward him by the hips and swept me slightly off my feet, pressing a kiss to my lips, then to the curve of my neck, making me laugh.
âMiss Greenbriar,â he said in a mock-scandalized tone, lips brushing my skin. âOne kiss and suddenly Iâm in your bedroom? Truly outrageous.â
âSebastian!â I laughed, playfully swatting at him. âPut me down!â
He grinned, kissing my cheek before stepping back with exaggerated innocence . âAlright, alright. Letâs write that letter.â
I pulled out a quill and a sheet of parchment, settling into the plush armchair by the fire. Sebastian flopped down beside me, still holding my hand like it was the only thing keeping him grounded. The flames cast a warm glow over us, and every now and then, the fire pulsed just a little brighter, like it, too, approved.
âAlright,â I said with a smile, dipping the quill into the ink. âLetâs tell my parents about you...gently.â
He chuckled, and I noticed how much lighter he seemed, like some invisible weight had finally lifted. That familiar spark danced in his eyes again, the old Sebastian charm slowly returning. âGently? Since when have we ever done anything gently?â
I laughed and began to write, letting the words flowâsincere, steady, and warm. Sebastian watched in silence, occasionally reaching over to brush a loose strand of hair from my face. There was something different in his gaze now. Not just affection, but peace. Hope. Like the world wasnât quite so heavy anymore.
âIâve actually mentioned you before, you know,â I said casually, not looking up from the parchment.
âOh?â he said, already smirking. âAnd what exactly have you told them, hmm? That Iâm charming? A brilliant duelist? Or just a bad influence with excellent hair?â
I rolled my eyes, smiling. âOnly the important parts. Like how you nearly got us eaten by that cursed bookcase in the Restricted Section.â
He leaned in a little, teasing. âSo, I'm being introduced as a hero, then. Brave, clever, mildly chaotic.â
âMostly chaotic,â I said, nudging him with my elbow. âBut somehow still worth writing home about.â
âWorth writing home about, huh?â His smile lingered, more tender now. âI think Iâll hold on to that.â
Sebastian watched me in silence for a moment, occasionally reaching over to brush a loose strand of hair from my face. There was something different in his gaze now. Not just affection, but peace. Hope. Like the world wasnât quite so heavy anymore.
When I finished, I folded the parchment with care. As I sealed it, the wax shimmered faintly with magic, a soft spark marking the charm that would keep the letter safe until opened.
âNow,â I said, standing up and stretching as the firelight danced along the curves of my sleeves, âyou still need to meet Athena.â
I called softly, and a graceful owl swooped down from her high perch near the window, her feathers gleaming silver in the firelight. Athena blinked her bright, intelligent eyes at Sebastian, then tilted her head with a curious tilt. She gave a soft hoot, feathers ruffling slightly.
Sebastian crouched down, holding out his hand gently. Athena studied him for a moment before hopping onto his finger, her talons light and precise. She looked into his eyes as if seeing right through himâand silently approving what she found.
âSheâs⌠something else,â Sebastian murmured, a genuine, wide smile spreading across his face.
Athena gave another soft hoot, clearly pleased.
âI think she likes you,â I teased, my heart warming at the sight.
He laughed, the sound rich and open. âIâll do my best to win her over.â
After a moment, he looked thoughtful. âIâll introduce you to my owl, Orion. Heâs a bit grumpy but fiercely loyalâkind of like me, I guess.â
I smiled. âIâd like that. Maybe one day we can have a little owl reunion.â
He nodded, eyes sparkling. âDefinitely. Maybe theyâll gossip about us when weâre not around Âť
I laughed softly, my eyes sparkling with mischief. âThen I hope they have some good stories to shareâand donât give away all our secrets.â
Leaning in slightly, I smiled warmly. âBut mostly, I canât wait to see how Athena and Orion will get along. Hopefully, theyâll be just as inseparable as we are.â
Sebastian smiled back, his voice steady. âI have no doubts about that.â
We spent the next few minutes watching Athena flutter between us. The distant chime of the dinner bell echoed through the castle corridors, gently pulling us back to reality.
I glanced at Sebastian; the flickering firelight danced in his eyes, and there was a spark of excitement there, like a silent promise of more moments just like this.
âDinner in the Great Hall?â I asked, a smile tugging at my lips.
He nodded, standing and brushing off his robes with a casual grace. âSounds perfect.â
From the warmth of my room, we made our way through the winding halls toward the Great Hall.
We walked together through the winding hallways, our hands still intertwined. Sebastianâs thumb traced gentle, absent-minded circles on the back of my hand, a small, tender gesture that felt new and electrifying, like the first warm breeze after a long winter.
Around us, the chatter and laughter of students who hadnât yet left Hogwarts for the holidays filled the air, but it felt as if we were wrapped in our own quiet bubble. The noise was there, distant and muted, like a melody heard through thick glass, present but unable to reach us. Two figures moving slowly through the crowd, savoring the calm between heartbeats.
As we turned a corner, Mrs. Weasley spotted us. Her eyes softened instantly. She smiled, a quiet, knowing smile, as she took in our joined hands. Her quiet approval wrapped around us like a comforting cloak.
As we approached the Great Hall, the enchanted ceiling mirrored the twilight sky: soft shades of rose and lavender streaking across a deepening blue. Long tables were already lined with plates piled high with food, the air rich with the aromas of roast meats, fresh bread, and sweet desserts.
Behind us, whispers stirred in the gently enchanted air, barely louder than a breeze.
âNo way.â
âTold you so.â
âTheyâre really together?â
I felt eyes on us : curious, surprised, delighted, or quietly judgmental. Faces peered from around corners; some students exchanged wide-eyed glances, others grinned with quiet approval. Some portraits on the walls turned their heads to watch with raised brows and gentle amusement. Even the enchanted suits of armor gave the faintest, respectful clinks as if nodding in acknowledgment. The enchantments woven into the castle itself stirred faintly around us, sensing the shift in emotion, the tender change between two students no longer pretending to be just friends.
But no one dared to break the fragile magic of the moment.
And we didnât care.
Not anymore.
A warmth blossomed in Sebastianâs eyes, and as the candlelight flickered around us, it felt like a new chapter was just beginning, one filled with hope.
Later after the dinner, we walked back to the common room at a leisurely pace, savoring the quiet moments, reluctant to part.
Sebastian let out a soft sigh and suddenly pulled me down with him onto the couch, me sitting on top of him, his hands resting gently on my waist. The firelight played across his face, casting shadows along his cheekbones and illuminating the warm, thoughtful look in his eyes.
âYou look like youâre still in a dream,â I said, turning to face him.
He smiled âFeels like one,â he murmured, brushing a strand of hair behind my ear. âI feel like I am. Like if I blink too fast, youâll vanish and Iâll wake up in bed. But itâs real. Thatâs the part I still canât get over.â
âIâm not going anywhere,â I whispered.
âIâve been alone with my thoughts for so long,â he said after a pause. âToo long. Even when people were around. Especially after everythingâŚâ His voice faltered. âI didnât realize how much I was pushing everyone away until I looked up and there was no one left. Except you.â
He held my gaze for a long moment, then leaned in not to kiss me again, but to rest his forehead gently against mine. His breath was warm, faintly scented with mint.
âI donât know what I did to deserve this,â he murmured. âTo deserve you.â
âYou didnât have to do anything,â I replied softly. âYou just had to let me in.â
A long silence passed between us. It wasnât awkward. It was soft. Sacred.
Then he chuckled, almost to himself.
âWhat?â I asked, smiling.
âIâm just thinking about your owl,â he said, grinning. âWhen she has to carry my letter home to your parents, sheâs going to hate me.â
âAthena doesnât hate anyone,â I said. âShe just⌠withholds affection until itâs earned. Youâll win her over.â
He raised an eyebrow. âSame way I won you over?â
âMm, no,â I teased. âYou just got lucky with me.â
Sebastian laughed, really laughed, and the sound filled the room like warm light.
We stayed by the fire until the castle began to dim around us, the flames dwindling to embers. We talked quietly, sharing stories, hopes, and fears we hadnât dared voice before. Sebastian traced idle patterns on my back, his touch gentle and steady, grounding me in the moment.
At one point, we fell into comfortable silence, just listening to the crackling fire and the distant echoes of the castle settling for the night. I rested my head against his shoulder, feeling the steady beat of his heart beneath me.
Outside the window, stars bloomed like silver ink across the velvet night.
Neither of us wanted to break the spell of those quiet hours, the way the world seemed to pause just for us. It felt like time itself was letting us steal a few more moments of peace.
I smiled softly, gathering my strength as I pushed myself up from where I was sitting on him. âCome on,â I whispered, my hair falling like a curtain across his face. Without hesitation, he reached up, gently sweeping the strands aside, his fingers lingering as he cupped my cheeks.
His gaze lingering on me with quiet awe. âYouâre so beautiful,â he murmured, voice low and full of wonder â as if saying it made everything feel a little more real.
I felt a blush rise to my cheeks, my heart fluttering in a way that surprised me.
âSebastianâŚâ I .. We really should get some sleep.â
He grinned teasingly. âWho wouldâve thought I have the power to make the hero of Hogwarts stumble like this?â
I laughed, a little breathless. âYouâre full of surprises.â
His smile softened, and he looked at me with quiet hope. âWill I see you in the morning?â
ÂŤYouâll see me at breakfast, lunch, after lunch, and before dinner...until the end of the week. Then Iâll go back to London to join my family, but Iâm already planning your arrival. Nothing less!â
âOkay, okay,â he chuckled, standing up with a smile. âI just donât want this...us...to feel like a dream come morning.â
The way his eyes held mine made my heart skip, like this moment was suspended between what was real and what I wished it could be forever.
I stepped closer and pressed a gentle kiss to the corner of his mouth. His breath hitched, and I caught the faint scent of mint, grounding me to him.
âIt wonât,â I promised, my voice barely above a whisper. âItâs real.â
As we headed toward our dorms, the castle corridors felt quieter somehow, like they were holding their breath, too.
At the staircase, where our paths would split for the night, he stopped and took my hand again. His fingers curled around mine with a tenderness that spoke volumes. He lifted my hand and kissed it, his lips warm and soft.
âSweet dreams,â he whispered.
âOnly if youâre in them,â I said, my voice trembling with more courage than Iâd felt all day.
He smiled, then gently brushed a stray lock of hair behind my ear, a simple, intimate gesture that sent a thrill straight through me. I caught myself thinking, Heâs probably teasing me for being cheesy⌠but also secretly proud that I said it out loud. His eyes searched mine, silent but full of promises yet to be spoken.
Then, his lips met mine once more, soft, slow, lingering, before he turned and disappeared up the stairs.
I stood there long after, my hand still tingling from his touch, my lips still warm from the kiss, my chest swelling with something light and hopeful. Maybe everything wasnât fixed. Maybe the future still held shadows. But for the first time in a long time, I didnât feel like I had to face it alone. And somehow, that made all the difference.
The next morning, after a light breakfast, Sebastian settled into the armchair by the window in my bedroom. âCome here,â he said, patting his knee. I smiled and sat down gently on his lap, feeling the warmth of his arms around me.
I grinned, pulling a folded parchment from my bag. âLook what arrived this morning. Athena mustâve flown extra fast with this letter! I guess my parents wanted to make sure you saw it as soon as possible.â
He chuckled softly, eyes sparkling with curiosity. âWell, even owls know when somethingâs important.â
I unfolded the letter carefully and began to read aloud, my voice steady as my parentsâ words filled the room, full of pride, humor, and welcome.
Dearest,
We received your letter with big smiles⌠and a little laughter.
First of all, congratulations on your O.W.L. results! You did brilliantly, and we couldnât be prouder. All those long nights studying (and complaining in your letters about âcertain Slytherins who wonât let me concentrateâ) clearly paid off.
And speaking of that particular SlytherinâŚ
So, Sebastian, hmm? The mysterious âstudy partnerâ who kept popping up in your letters. He âhappens to sit nearby,â âmakes me laugh even when Iâm frustrated,â âjust understands things differentlyâŚâ Sweetheart, we may not wield ancient magic like you, but weâre not clueless either. Even your father eventually said, âThat boyâs taking up more space in her letters than her Transfiguration homework.â
Weâre happy for you, truly. He sounds like someone good for you, and if he brings even a little light into all that magical chaos, then heâs already welcome in our home.
Weâre very much looking forward to meeting him. He is now officially (and affectionately) invited to visit during the holidays. Though, he should know a few things ahead of time:
â Your father has taken out the good tablecloth, the one we only use for âserious business.â
â Youâll need to help explain to your grandfather that no, heâs not a Muggle.
â He will be challenged to a game of Exploding Snap by your brother, which is highly humiliating for the loser.
We love you endlessly, weâre so proud of you, and we canât wait to hug you. And Sebastian too, yes ...assuming he survives the family gauntlet.
All our love (and a hint of impatience),
Mum & Dad
P.S. Dad says: âTell Sebastian heâd better like pumpkin pie or at least be very good at pretending.â
As I read aloud, his lips curved into a smile at the familiar, warm tone of my parentsâ words.
When I reached the part about him âtaking up more space in my letters than my Transfiguration homework,â he chuckled softly and nudged me.
âGuess Iâm officially more important than your studies now,â he teased, his grin mischievous.
I laughed, shaking my head. âDonât let it go to your head.â
His eyes sparkled as I read about the family gauntlet, exploding Snap challenges, pumpkin pie tests, and the infamous âgood tablecloth.â He groaned dramatically.
âExploding Snap? Really? I should have known. Iâll need some serious practice before I visit you.â
I smiled, folding the letter back up. âTheyâre excited. And honestly, it feels good to know theyâre already rooting for us.â
I squeezed his hand back. âDeal. But only if you survive pumpkin pie first.â
He took my hand gently. âMe too. And hey, if your brother loses at Snap, Iâm expecting a celebration.â
We sat together in comfortable silence for a moment, the letter resting between us like a promise of new beginnings and maybe a little chaos.

This is my first story, so Iâd love to hear your thoughts and suggestions for improvement.
Enjoy !
As I approach the room, the lively chatter and laughter of students enjoying their Friday evening greet me. The room is warm and bustling, filled with the cheerful chaos of young people unwinding after a long week. I feel a soft sense of belonging as I step inside. The air hums with lifeâwarmth, joy but a bit noisy.
The charm of Hogwarts magic is woven into its very walls. Musicians in enchanted paintings line the room, playing lively tunes that blend seamlessly with the laughter and voices of the students. A violinist in one frame nods in time with the music, while a cellist in another painting closes her eyes as if lost in her melody. Their performances add a playful and elegant rhythm to the already vibrant atmosphere.
I take it all inâlaughter, the clinking of glasses, and the hum of voices filled with excitement, a gentle reminder of the world outside of ancient magic and fighting against Ranrokâs loyalits.
I step inside and spot Natty and Poppy deep in conversation in the right corner. They always seem to make the most out of these moments, letting the world move around them.
Across the room, Garreth is flirting with a Hufflepuff, his tone light and easy. He pauses mid-sentence to greet me.
âLook whoâs here! Enjoy your night, Sofia!â
âThanks, Garreth. You too!â I reply with a smile.
In the center of the room, around the large table, I see Rebecca and her usual pack. A Slytherin student is trying to make them laugh with a spell, but it backfires spectacularly, causing a wave of giggles and chuckles. Itâs amusing, but it doesnât hold my attention for long.
At the back of the room, my gaze lands on Sebastian. Heâs sprawled on a sofa, legs propped on a stand, completely engrossed in a book. A smile tugs at my lips before I can stop itâseeing him fills me with an undeniable happiness. Without a second thought, I walk confidently toward him. As I approach, the noises of the room fade into the background. Itâs as if heâs the only one here, as if i am stepping into a place where everything just... fits.
I sink onto the sofa beside him, leaning into his comforting warmth as the hearth fire crackles softly nearby. The flickering flames cast a golden glow across his face, highlighting the sharp line of his jaw and the gentle curve of his lips. His brown eyes glint with quiet intensity, their warmth pulling me in. His Slytherin uniform is gone, replaced by a more relaxed lookâhis tie loosened, shirt sleeves rolled slightly.
âHey, you,â he says, turning toward me with that effortless smile that always seems to make everything seem lighter.
âHey, what are you reading?â I ask, my voice lighter than I expected, the curiosity taking over.
âPoetry,â he replies, holding up the book for me to see. Itâs a collection of poems by Byron opened to ÂŤÂ She Walks in Beauty .
I grin, always fascinated by his eclectic taste in reading. âI love the duality of you,â I tease, a playful edge to my voice. âChaos incarnate, yet here you are, reading poetry. How do you manage to read with all this noise?â
He letâs out a small scoff, a smirk playing on his lips âItâs fineâ he says, as if itâs no big deal. âThere are lots of pictures and drawings in this one.â He holds up the book, showing me the illustrations.
I lean in, my fingers tracing the edges of the pages. The intricate drawings and delicate, vintage art make the poetry feel more tangible. Sebastian takes my hand and brings it to his nose, a soft, intimate gesture that sends warmth rushing to my cheeks.
âYou smell sugary and... fiery,â he says still looking at me as he continues to speak, his voice a little quieter than usual. I can feel his breath on my skin, making my heart beat a little faster.
I laugh softly, trying to push back the fluttering in my chest. âI baked cupcakes for Samantha,â I say, suddenly feeling a little self-conscious. Itâs strange how easily he can make me feel this way, but I canât seem to hide it.
âIs it her birthday?â he asks, his tone light but genuine.
âNo,â I answer, my gaze flickering to the book in his hands. âSheâs been down since Everett broke up with her.â I feel a pang in my chest at the memory. Itâs hard to watch someone you care about suffer, and itâs even harder when you canât fix it.
âThey were together?â he asks, his surprise palpable. I canât help but let out a small laugh, though itâs not one filled with humor. More like disbelief.
âWhere have you been these last five months?â I say, shaking my head. âThey were inseparable. Before everything fell apart.â
âCan I have some cupcakes?â he asks playfully.
I raise an eyebrow. âWhat do you need cupcakes for?â
âJust because you like me,â he teases, a mischievous glint in his eyes.
I laugh, feeling the tension ease between us. âMaybe Iâll bring you some next time.â
âThanks, but what about the fiery part?âhe asks, his tone more playful now, but his gaze still intense.
âPoppy noticed a poacher camp near the river in the Forbidden Forest,â I explain, my voice steady now. âThey captured a unicorn, so I dealt with it.â
Sebastian lets out a laugh, but itâs soft, like heâs amused by the absurdity of it all. âAnd Iâm the chaotic one?â he says, a teasing glint in his eye.
âYouâre not the only one with a little fire,â I reply, a smirk tugging at my lips. Itâs playful, but thereâs an undeniable truth to it.
ÂŤTell me more, what happened?â
I straighten slightly, brushing a strand of hair behind my ear as the memory floods back.
âPoppy noticed the camp on her patrols and came to find me. When i got there, it was worse than I imagined.â
-----
The camp had been a jarring sightâa crude cluster of tents surrounded by makeshift cages, their rusted bars barely holding back the terrified creatures trapped inside. Fires burned low in iron braziers, casting long, menacing shadows that danced across the trees.
My eyes were drawn immediately to the unicorn. It stood trembling in one of the cages, its silvery-white coat shimmering faintly, even in the dim light. Its mane glinted like strands of moonlight, and its wide, frightened eyes darted toward every sound. The sight of such a majestic creature in such a state ignited a knot of anger in my chest.
Nearby, two poachers loitered, laughing at something I couldnât make out. Their wands were tucked carelessly into their belts, their posture betraying an overconfidence I intended to shatter.
I have to act fast, I thought, the urgency sharpening my focus.
With a flick of my wand, I cast a Disillusionment Charm, the spell cloaking me in near-invisibility as I crept forward, each step silent and deliberate. When I was close enough, I whispered, Expelliarmus! The poachers barely had time to react before their wands flew from their hands, landing uselessly in the dirt.
Before they could recover, I followed up with a rapid succession of Stupefy spells. Red flashes of light streaked toward them, and they crumpled to the ground, unconscious.
I turned my attention to the cage. It was fortified with layers of dark magic, and breaking the lock proved far more difficult than I anticipated. My spells sparked against the enchantments, but with each attempt, my determination only grew stronger. Finally, the lock gave way with a sharp crack.
The door swung open, and the unicorn bolted without hesitation, its hooves barely skimming the ground as it disappeared into the forest, a silvery blur against the dark trees. Relief flooded through me, mingling with a fierce sense of pride as I watched it vanish into safety.
-----
âIt was worth every spell,â I tell Sebastian, my voice softening. âSeeing that unicorn run free... it reminded me why I do this. Why we fight.â
He looks at me with a warm, thoughtful smile, he firelight catching the subtle warmth in his brown eyes âYouâre incredible, you know that?â he says, his tone a mix of teasing and sincerity. âRescuing unicorns and baking cupcakesâwhat donât you do?â
I laugh lightly, the tension between us giving way to something softer, more familiar. âWell, someone has to keep things interesting.â
Sebastian leans back, studying me with an affectionate smile. âYou always take care of the people around you. Âť
His expression softens, and for a moment, I wonder if he sees something in me that no one else does. "Youâre okay?" he asks quietly, concern threading through his voice.
I nod quickly, perhaps too quickly. âYes, thanks,â I say, but the words donât seem to fit. Itâs not just the noise of the room anymore; itâs the growing tension between us, the subtle undercurrent of something more.
Just as I try to push the thoughts aside Rebeccaâs laugh pierces through the room, loud and attention-seeking, shattering the quiet moment Sebastian and I were sharing. I try to ignore it, but the noise feels like an intrusion. Her white, short hair gleams under the light as she soaks up the attention like itâs her birthright. I glance toward her and feel my irritation spike. There she is again ...always in the middle of everything, soaking up the attention like she canât survive without it. Sheâs all sharp smiles and calculated charm. Itâs not just her attitude or how she always has to be the center of attention. Itâs something deeper. Something off.
I grip the edge of the sofa for a moment, the memory of a particularly unpleasant interaction flooding back unbidden.
------
It was a chilly morning in the courtyard, the frost clinging stubbornly to the edges of the cobblestones. I was running late to class, clutching my books tightly against the cold, when I spotted Rebecca leaning casually against a column, her usual pack of admirers gathered around her, their laughter and chatter creating a bubble of attention that she soaked up effortlessly.
I tried to slip past unnoticed, keeping my head down, but her voice sliced through the crisp airâsmooth and sweet, like honeyed poison. âSofia,â she called out, loud enough to draw the attention of everyone nearby. âYouâre looking... industrious as always.â
I paused, glancing over my shoulder. Her tone was light, but there was a sharpness in her eyes that sent a prickle of unease down my spine. âRebecca,â I replied evenly, keeping my voice neutral. âWhat do you need?â
âOh, nothing at all,â she said with a smile that didnât quite reach her eyes. âI just find it fascinating how you always seem to be... in the thick of things. Solving everyoneâs problems. Donât you ever get tired of playing the hero?â
Her words stung more than I cared to admit, but I refused to let her see it. âI donât do it for attention, if thatâs what youâre implying,â I said cool and steady, meeting her gaze.
âOf course not,â she replied, tilting her head slightly, studying me like a cat watching a mouse. âBut isnât it exhausting? Always trying to prove yourself? To fit in?â
The jab struck deep, a direct hit to insecurities I worked hard to bury. My grip on my books tightened, but I refused to give her the satisfaction of a reaction. âIâm late for class,â I said instead, turning away.
As I walked off, her parting words followed me, laced with mock concern. âJust be careful, Sofia. People like youâpeople who try too hardâthey burn out.â
Her smug smile lingered in my mind long after Iâd left, a bitter reminder of why I kept my distance.
------
Sebastianâs gaze flicks toward her, lingering just a moment too long. I canât stop myself from rolling my eyes, frustration bubbling up inside me.
âWhat is it?â Sebastian asks, noticing the shift in my expression, his brow furrowing slightly.
âNot you tooâŚâ I sigh, my words tinged with annoyance.
He looks back at me, sensing my irritation. âWhat?âhe says, feigning innocence, though I know he knows exactly what I mean.
âDo you fancy her?â The words tumble out before I can stop them, clumsy and unfiltered, but the question has already escaped into the space between us.
Sebastian laughs, his voice incredulous. âAre you mad? How many butterbeers have you had tonight?â
I cross my arms, trying to hide the sudden burst of unease. âEvery other girl in this castle would be happy to snog you. So why her?â
His lips curl into a slow, teasing smile, amusement lighting his eyes. âWould you?â
I blink, the question catching me off guard. I blink, my mind scrambling.âWhat?â I manage to say, the word barely more than a breath.
âSnog with me?â he repeats, his voice teasing but with an underlying warmth that makes my chest tighten.
âHow can you ask me that?â I stammer, my heart beating wildly.
âYou just did!â he counters with a smirk, the lightness of his voice making it impossible to look away.
âItâs different,â I insist, though the words feel weak, tangled in the whirlwind of thoughts crowding my head.
âWhy?â
I hesitate, my arms tightening around myself as I try to untangle the truth. âBecause weâre best friends. Weâd need to think carefully before... something like that happens.â
âI agree,â he says softly, his voice barely above a whisper.
I glance away, my voice lowering to match his.
âI was raised in the Muggle world. I canât just jump into the first cupboard with someone. Itâs not like that where I come from. Call me old-fashioned.â
A soft chuckle escapes him, his gaze steady and warm. âFair enough,â he murmurs, the sincerity in his eyes melting some of the tension between us.
Sebastianâs expression softens, curiosity flickering in his eyes. âWhy do you hate her?â he asks gently.
âI donât hate her,â I say quickly, shaking my head. âItâs just... our interactions havenât been pleasant and I donât trust someone who constantly crave so much attentionâ
Sebastian nods slowly âI donât either,â he adds, his voice reassuring. âYou can rest easy. I donât fancy her, Sheâs just... always there.â
âOh, I know.â I nod in agreement, though a small part of me canât shake the unease curling in my chest. I know I should let it go, but the feeling lingers, gnawing at the edges of my thoughts.
As if sensing my discomfort, he reaches over and gently squeezes my hand, his thumb brushing lightly over my fingers. The simple gesture sends a warmth through me, soothing some of the tension.
I smile faintly, grateful for the unspoken understanding between us. But something still feels heavy, unsaidâhanging in the air like a weight neither of us wants to address.
âI think Iâm going to bed,â I say, standing up abruptly. The room feels suffocating all of a sudden, and I need to get away from the tension.
Sebastian watches me, a flicker of concern in his eyes. âLet me walk you to your dorm.âhe offers, already moving to stand.
I hesitate, âNo, itâs okay,â I say, softer than I intended. âFinish your book.â
Before I can turn away, he grabs my hand, his touch warm and steady, sending an unexpected jolt through me. I look up at him, startled by the intensity in his gaze.
âI donât want to snog any other girl in this castle,â he says, his words unexpectedly sincere.
My heart flutters, and I canât suppress the smile that tugs at my lips. âThatâs good to know,â I teaselightly, though the warmth spreading through me feels anything but casual.
He grins, the warmth in his expression unmistakable.âLetâs go to Hogsmeade tomorrow. Just you and me. We could both use a break.â
I squeeze his hand, feeling a warmth spread through me. âWith pleasure.â i reply holding his gaze.
âSweet dreams, Sebastian.â
âGoodnight Sofiaâ he says softly, his smile lingering as I turn to leave.
Before I leave the room, I make my way toward Poppy and Natty, who are still seated in the cozy corner where I first spotted them. Their conversation is punctuated with bursts of quiet laughter, and the warm camaraderie between them is infectious. As I approach, Poppy looks up, her eyes lighting up with her usual spark of curiosity.
As I approach, Poppy looks up, her eyes lighting with her characteristic spark of curiosity.
âSofia!â she exclaims, her voice bright and welcoming. âWe were wondering when youâd stop by.â
Natty grins, leaning back in her chair with effortless grace. âYou looked rather... occupied,â she teases, a knowing glint in her eye. âDid you enjoy your conversation with Sebastian?â
Heat rushes to my cheeks, but I manage a soft laugh. âYou could say that,â I reply, trying for nonchalance. âItâs been a long day, though. I think Iâll head to bed soon.â
Poppy tilts her head slightly, tucking a stray strand of hair behind her ear. Her expression turns more serious. âBefore you go,â she says, her tone quieter now, âdid you really deal with that poacher camp near the Forbidden Forest?â
I nod, feeling a flicker of tension resurface. âYes. Theyâre getting bolder, but nothing I couldnât handle,â I say, aiming to sound reassuring. âI managed to free the unicorn they captured. Poor thing was terrified.â
Poppyâs face changes instantly, her eyes widening with a mix of relief and gratitude. âYou freed it?â she breathes, her voice barely above a whisper. âOh, Sofia... thank you. Unicorns are so vulnerable, especially in captivity. I canât bear to think what mightâve happened if you hadnât been there.â
Her words strike a chord, and I offer a small, reassuring smile. âI couldnât just stand by and do nothing,â I say softly. âIt was the least I could do.â
Poppy reaches out, taking my hand in hers. Her grip is firm yet gentle, grounding me in her quiet sincerity. âYou didnât have to,â she says, her voice filled with emotion. âBut you did. You always do. Thank you, Sofiaâtruly.â
Natty places a comforting hand on Poppyâs shoulder, her gaze warm and steady as she turns to me.
âSheâs right,â she says, her voice warm. âYou always seem to be at the center of things, Sofia. Just promise us youâll take care of yourself too, yes?â
Their concern wraps around me like a soft blanket, and I smile, grateful for their support. âI promise,â I reply. âAnd Iâll let you know if thereâs anything more to worry about.â
Poppyâs smile softens, her gratitude still evident. âThe magical creatures in this world are lucky to have you looking out for them.â
Her words catch me off guard, and for a moment, Iâm unable to speak. I swallow the lump forming in my throat and manage a quiet, heartfelt response. âThank you, Poppy. That means a lot.â
Nattyâs smile widens, her strength shining through. âAnd you know where to find us if you ever need backup.â
Poppyâs grin returns, brighter now, her tone turning playful. âOr a distraction,â she adds her tone playful.with a mischievous lilt.
I canât help but laugh, the tension from earlier beginning to ease. âThank you, both of you. I donât know what Iâd do without you.â
Before leaving, I lean in and pull them both into a quick, affectionate hug. Nattyâs embrace is firm and grounding, while Poppyâs is warm and full of quiet support. The moment feels like an anchor, reminding me of the strength of our friendship.
âGoodnight,â I say softly as I pull away. âSweet dreams.â
âSleep well, Sofia,â Natty replies, her voice warm and sincere.
As I head toward the exit, I glance over my shoulder one last time.
Sebastian watches me from across the room, a thoughtful expression on his face. I wonder whatâs going through his mind, the weight of our conversation still lingering in the air between us.
As I leave the common room behind, a sense of calm starts to settle over me, though my thoughts remain tangled. The corridors are quieter now, the echoes of laughter and footsteps fading into stillness as I make my way back to my dormitory.
My mind keeps circling back to Sebastian. Thereâs something about himâsomething that leaves me feeling warm and uncertain all at once. Heâs always had that effortless charm, the kind that makes it hard to tell where his teasing ends and something more might begin.
Iâve seen him with others, watched the way he draws people in with just a smile or a quick, clever remark. Itâs like second nature to him, that easy charisma. So how am I supposed to know if the way he looks at meâthe way his gaze lingers just a heartbeat too longâmeans something?
Is it just Sebastian being Sebastian? Or could there actually be more to it?
I shake my head, as if I can physically dislodge the thoughts. Maybe Iâm imagining things. Maybe Iâm seeing meaning where there is none because⌠because I want there to be.
When I push open the door to my room, the familiar scent of parchment and mallosweet greets me. The space I share with Imelda is cozy yet eclectic, a blend of comfort and personality. The stone walls are softened by tapestries and drapes in deep purples and greens, the rich colors adding warmth to the room.
Imeldaâs side is neatly arranged, her desk stacked high with books, everything in its place. Sheâs always been meticulous, with a keen eye for detail. On top of her bookshelf, a small collection of trophies and ribbonsâearned through Quidditchâglint in the soft light, each one a testament to her dedication.
My side is a little more chaotic, reflecting my free-spirited nature. Thereâs more color here, with cushions in vibrant hues scattered across the bed. My desk is cluttered with half-finished sketches, piles of notes, and bits of this and that. Above my bedside table hangs a small, hand-painted mirror, surrounded by small trinketsâa dried flower from an old adventure, a silver locket, and a few mementos from my family and my time at Hogwarts.
A single, large window offers a view of under the blacklake, and when the weather allows, the room fills with soft sunlight in the afternoons. Despite our differences, this space has become one where weâve learned to coexist and even thrive. Our shared room is an organized chaos of magical energy and youthful spirit, a place where we can both relax, study, and grow.
Weâve come a long way since we first started sharing this space. What began with tension and awkwardness has slowly blossomed into a genuine friendship. Imelda and I have learned to support one another, to embrace our differencesâand now, Iâm proud to call her one of my closest friends.
I can hear the occasional rustle from the other side of the room, where Imelda is already tucked into her bed. She looks up as I enter, her gaze meeting mine, and I smile in her direction.
Imelda notices me right away and looks up from her book. Her dark eyes lock onto mine, and she raises an eyebrow. "Youâre back late," she says casually, though thereâs an underlying curiosity in her tone. She sets her book aside and adjusts the covers around her.
"Yeah, just needed some time to clear my head," I reply, kicking off my shoes and dropping my bag onto the chair near the window.
She nods thoughtfully, her expression understanding. "Rough day?"
I hesitate for a moment, my mind drifting back to Sebastian and the complex feelings I canât quite sort through "In a way," I answer, though it feels like thereâs more to it than just a rough day. Imelda watches me carefully, as though sensing that somethingâs weighing on me, but she doesnât press further. Weâve reached a point where we respect each otherâs space and know when to just leave things be.
She raises an eyebrow, eyeing me carefully.. "I hope itâs not Sallow whoâs put you in this mood. That boyâs got a way of making everything more complicated than it needs to be."
I freeze for a moment, the mention of Sebastianâs name pulling me back into the whirlwind of thoughts Iâve been trying to avoid. "No, itâs not him," I reply quickly, perhaps a bit too quickly. Iâm not ready to dive into that just yet. "I just... had a lot on my mind tonight."
Imelda gives me a knowing look, her lips curling into a mischievous smile. "Oh, come on, donât lie to me. Iâve seen that look on your face a million times before. Itâs clear heâs got it bad for you."
She leans back against her pillows, propping herself up on her elbows, clearly enjoying the moment. "And let me guess, heâs about as subtle as a brick, isnât he? Like he canât decide if heâs going to kiss you or just stand there looking confused."
I roll my eyes, though a small smile escapes despite my best efforts. "Imelda, please. Heâs not that obvious."
She scoffs, holding her book against her chest with a dramatic flourish. "Oh, please. The boyâs practically tripping over himself whenever youâre around. Heâs clearly crushing on you, but heâs got no clue how to act on it. Itâs like watching a puppy trying to figure out how to bark."
I blush, the warmth creeping up my cheeks despite myself. "IâI'm not sure that's what's going on."
"Sweetheart, trust me," she says, her voice teasing yet affectionate. "Heâs definitely into you. He just doesnât know how to admit it. Maybe he thinks heâll ruin your âfriendshipâ or whatever excuse heâs using to avoid actually doing something about it."
I groan, collapsing onto my bed. "You're impossible."
Imelda chuckles, a mischievous glint in her eye. "I know. But you canât deny it. Youâve seen the way he looks at youâitâs like youâre the only person in the room."
I canât help but think of the way Sebastianâs smile lights up when he sees me, how he makes me feel like Iâm the most important person in the world when weâre together. But I push those thoughts away, still uncertain about what all of this means.
Imelda leans forward, her voice softening slightly. "But hey, if heâs not going to make a move, then you might have to take matters into your own hands."
I nod, her words sinking in. "I know. I just... donât know what to do with all of it yet. He confuses me."
Imelda smirks, her tone playful once more. "Well, donât let him keep you spinning in circles, Sofia. If heâs too oblivious to see whatâs right in front of him, youâve got other options."
I laugh softly, shaking my head. "Thanks, Imelda. Iâll keep that in mind."
She gives me a knowing smile and picks up her book again, clearly satisfied with her teasing. "Get some rest, Sofia."
I chuckle, my thoughts drifting back to Sebastian, but this time I feel more at ease, the tension gone.
"Goodnight, Imelda."
A flick of my wand sends the candles by my bed flickering to life, their warm light casting gentle shadows across the walls.
I set my wand down on the nightstand and settle onto the edge of the bed. The room feels peaceful now, but my mind is anything but. Sebastianâs words keep echoing in my thoughts: âI donât want to snog any other girl in this castle.â There was something in the way he said itâearnest, almost vulnerableâthat made my chest tighten.
I shake my head, trying to push the thoughts aside, and reach for my journal. Writing has always helped me clear my head. As the quill glides over the parchment, I find myself replaying the events of the eveningâthe laughter, the warmth of the fire, Rebeccaâs sharp presence, and Sebastianâs quiet sincerity.
I pause, staring at the page. The truth is, despite what Imelda said, I still donât know what to make of whatever this ... thing between us.. Thereâs something more than friendship, something I canât quite define, and the thought of it both excites and terrifies me.
Setting the quill down, I close the journal and lean back against the pillows. The soft glow of the candles is comforting, but my thoughts remain restless. I think about the unicorn I saved earlierâthe wild beauty of it and the freedom it found once the cage was broken.
Freedom.
The word lingers in my mind as I stare at the ceiling. Maybe thatâs what Iâm afraid ofâlosing the freedom of what we already have. Or maybe Iâm afraid of something bigger, something I canât name.
I pull the quilt up around me, its warmth chasing away the lingering chill. The world outside is still, and for a moment, so am I. Tomorrow will come, bringing with it all its questions and uncertainties, but for now, I close my eyes and let myself drift.
I smile to myself at the thought of tomorrowâHogsmeade. The idea of a peaceful, carefree day with Sebastian, away from the usual chaos of school, lightens my spirit.
What excites me most, though, is the chance to finally understand whatâs been bubbling between us. I canât help but wonder how Sebastian truly feelsâwhat lies behind his teasing smiles and earnest words. Maybe tomorrow will offer a glimpse of that truth.
------------
Sebastian watches her leave, his gaze lingering on the door as it closes behind her. A thoughtful expression flickers across his face, but he doesnât dwell on it for long. With a sigh, he heads toward his dorm, the familiar creak of the floorboards under his feet grounding him as he steps into the room he shares with his best friend.
Sebastianâs side of the room is a reflection of his natureâneatly organized, yet with a certain chaotic flair that is unmistakably his. Books and scrolls are scattered across his bedside table, an unfinished potion brewing kit left carelessly to one side. A few items of Quidditch gear are strewn about, a constant reminder of his athleticism. On his desk, a couple of paintings of his parents and Anne sit beside a pile of ink bottles and scribbled notes, evidence of his ever-active mind.
Across the room, Ominis maintains a much more orderly space. His bed is meticulously made, and his small collection of booksâmostly focused on magical theory, potions, and historyârests in neat stacks along the bookshelf. A silver pocket watch, a cherished gift from his late aunt Noctua, sits on the corner of his desk beside a quill and a parchment filled with detailed notes.
Though the room is not large, it feels spacious due to its simplicity. The stone walls are decorated with small tapestries depicting various magical creatures and scenes from ancient wizarding history. Above the fireplace, a painting of hogwarts covered by snow.
Thereâs an unspoken understanding between them. They respect each otherâs need for space and solitude, yet their companionship is effortless, built on a quiet bond thatâs both unlikely and unwavering.
He shuts the door behind him, the quiet click echoing in the stillness of the room. Sebastian knows he canât keep avoiding the truth. Tomorrowâs trip to Hogsmeade seems like the perfect chance to finally take a step forward with Sofia, but heâs unsure how to approach it, how to tell her whatâs really on his mind. How should he approach it? How does he tell her whatâs really on his mind? He canât keep hiding behind playful gestures and meaningless words. He has to tell Sofia how he feels. But how?
Inside, the soft glow of enchanted lanterns fills the room, casting a warm light that makes the space feel cozy but unpretentious. Ominis emerges from the bathroom, his hair slightly damp and a towel draped over his shoulder.
âHey,â Sebastian says, flopping down onto his bed with a long, tired exhale. He stares up at the ceiling for a moment before standing to shrug off his robes. He pulls out a neatly folded set of nightclothes from his trunk and changes quickly, trading the weight of the day for the comforting softness of flannel and a plain shirt. The simple motion helps to ease some of the tension in his shoulders as he tosses his clothes into the laundry bin by the wardrobe.
Sitting back down on the edge of the bed, he leans forward, resting his elbows on his knees. âCan I ask you something?â
Ominis raises an eyebrow, his expression one of quiet curiosity. âOf course.â
Sebastian recounts his conversation with Sofia, his voice animated but tinged with confusion. He finishes with a bewildered shake of his head. âSince when does Sofia care about who I fancy or snog?â
Ominis leans casually against his own bedpost, crossing his arms. A sly smile plays on his lips as he tilts his head slightly. âSheâs always cared, Sebastian. I donât need my eyes to see that.â
Sebastian blinks, clearly baffled. âWhat?â
âSheâs jealous, Sebastian,â Ominis says matter-of-factly, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world.
âJealous? Of what? I donât fancy Rebecca!â Sebastian protests, his voice rising slightly with indignation.
Ominis raises an eyebrow, his tone calm and measured. âYou sure look at her a lot. But yes, I believe you. Rebeccaâs always in the middle of everything. She might be pretty, but sheâs a bully, a teacherâs pet, and a pure-blood apologist. I donât trust her.â
Sebastian nods, a frown tugging at his lips. âYou and Sofia can both rest easy. I donât fancy Rebecca, and I donât plan on befriending her either.â
âGood.â Ominis straightens up, his smirk morphing into a knowing grin. âThen maybe itâs time you stop dancing around the truth with Sofia and tell her how you feel.â
Sebastian leans back on his bed, the weight of Ominisâs words settling over him like a heavy blanket. His eyes drift to the canopy above as doubt and realization flicker across his face. Ominis watches him for a moment before chuckling softly, shaking his head.
âWhat?â Sebastian asks, turning his gaze toward him.
âNothing,â Ominis replies, his smirk widening. âItâs just fun watching you try to figure out whatâs been clear to the rest of us for ages.â.
Sebastian groans and drags a hand down his face, but despite himself, a hint of a smile tugs at his lips. He doesnât respond, though itâs clear the wheels in his mind are turning, his thoughts now consumed by more than just Sofiaâs words.
Ominis gives him a light clap on the shoulder as he moves toward his bed. âGoodnight, Sebastian. Donât think too hardâyou might hurt yourself.â
Sebastian throws a pillow at him, missing by a wide margin. âGoodnight, Ominis,â he mutters, though a laugh escapes him. The banter eases the tension, but as the room falls quiet, Sebastian canât shake Sofiaâs voice from his mind. Her words linger, carrying a weight he hadnât noticed before.
As Sebastian lies in his bed, Ominis has already settled into his own, facing the wall, likely already halfway to sleep, the soft rustle of his sheets barely audible in the quiet. The weight of the day has caught up with them both, Yet, despite the fatigue, Sebastianâs mind is still racing. The events of the evening with Sofiaâtheir conversation, the stolen glances, the palpable tensionâkeep replaying in his thoughts. He feels restless, unsure of how to move forward with everything.
The room is quiet, save for the occasional creak of the old wooden beams above them. Sebastianâs eyes flicker toward Ominis, who lies on his back, hands resting behind his head, calm, collected. Ominis has always had a knack for reading between the lines, especially when it comes to emotions. Itâs hard to keep things from him, even when Sebastian tries.
After a moment, the silence becomes too heavy to bear, his thoughts growing louder by the second. After a moment of internal debate, Sebastian finally turns toward Ominis, who is clearly on the verge of sleep. He hesitates, then calls out softly, âOminis.â
Thereâs a grumbled response from the other side of the room. âWhat now, Sebastian? Itâs past midnight.â
Sebastian hesitates, unsure if he should push further or let Ominis sleep, but the weight on his chest wonât let him rest. âI need to ask you something.â
Ominis groans in irritation, but after a beat, he shifts slightly in his bed. âThis better be important. I was just about to fall asleep.â
Sebastian shifts his weight, knowing heâs interrupting, but he doesnât care. âItâs about Sofia.â
Thereâs a long pause, and Sebastian can hear Ominisâs sigh of frustration, clearly trying to hold back his annoyance. Finally, he responds, propping himself up on his elbows. âWhat about her...again?âHe shifts a little, propping himself up on his elbows. "
Sebastian feels his chest tighten as he sits up, his voice barely above a whisper. "I donât know what to do, Ominis. IâI think I might like her, but I have no idea how to tell her. How do I confess? How do I actually say it without making everything weird?"
Ominis falls quiet for a moment, the only sound in the room the soft rustling of their blankets. He studies Sebastian carefully, his tone turning more serious. "You're asking me how to confess your feelings, huh?"
Sebastianâs shoulders slump slightly, the weight of his vulnerability sinking in. "Yeah... I donât know. Iâm not good with this stuff. What if I mess it all up? I donât want to make things awkward between us, but I feel like if I donât say something, Iâm going to lose my chance."
Ominis shifts in bed, his voice calm but firm. "Look, the truth is, you canât control how sheâll respond. But if you're honest with her, that's the best you can do. Donât overthink it."
Sebastian runs a hand through his hair, trying to wrap his mind around it all. "So, I just... say it? Like, âHey, I like you, Letâs see where this goes?â"
Ominis chuckles softly, shaking his head. "There is no script, Sebastian. Youâll figure it out when youâre with her. Just donât pretend you donât care when you do. If youâre afraid of messing it up, that's actually a good sign, thatâs a sign itâs real."
Sebastian bites his lip, absorbing Ominisâs advice. "Right... I guess I canât expect some perfect moment to fall into my lap."
Ominisâs voice softens slightly. "No. but if youâre serious about her, then you owe it to yourselfâand herâto be honest. You never know what might happen."
Sebastian feels his stomach flutter a bit, the reality of it all settling in. "And what if she doesnât feel the same way?"
Ominisâs tone softens, though his words remain blunt. "Then at least youâll know for sure, and you wonât be left wondering âwhat if.â But honestly? I donât think sheâs going to turn you down. She likes you more than you realize."
Sebastian feels a warmth spread through him at those words, but the nerves still linger. He leans back against his pillow, gazing at the ceiling, allowing the quiet to settle in once more. "Thanks, Ominis. I really needed to hear that."
"No problem," Ominis replies, settling back into his bed. "Now, let me sleep."
Sebastian chuckles softly, a slight smile tugging at his lips. He feels lighter after the conversation. The uncertainty hasnât completely disappeared, but itâs no longer as overwhelming. Closing his eyes, he knows that tomorrow, when heâs with Sofia in Hogsmeade, heâll finally find the courage to be honest.
