You have to remember, Charlie wakes up with Babe in the night when he's tossing and turning, shaking with the trauma of what happened. I couldn't put the person I love through that. I can be the villain 100 times over, but I can't put them back in that space.

Charlie's life has been defined by what he can do for people because he was told he was worthless. He feels like he needs to do this to keep Babe safe from all of it.

Is he right? No, and maybe yes. For the previous reason. But Babe is right, too. The person he loves and soothes his wounds is Charlie. The one who made it safe for Babe to open up was Charlie. And Babe gave Charlie what he always needed, which was to be needed. And wanted above all others.

It seems like old hat and I get it, but like I love it when broken people continue to break and twist and hurt. It's born out of love, and it cuts deeply. Charlie is stronger than me because if a man that beautiful came crying to me, I'd fold like a deck of cards.

To be crystal clear, this is 99.9999% the writers issue. They are the ones that have left Charlie’s character mostly underwritten and pushed it into the subtext and/or allusions - so I’m not really blaming the fans. It’s a writers problem.

Ironically his power is a great allegory for his character. He is the martyr. He is the one who tries to take everyone else’s problems onto himself. He is self sacrificing to a massive fault.

Because that’s all he’s ever been good at.

All of these characters have some huge traumas from living with Tony. Some are very obvious, like Kenta. Others are far more invisible, like Pete. However, they all have them.

Out of the cast we have who lived with Tony, only Charlie and Kenta were treated with exclusive negativity. Mental and/or physical abuse throughout the majority or entirety of their time with him.

Babe was loved, until he figured out the truth. Pete was mostly oblivious. Way wasn’t treated with as much affection as Babe, but he was trusted and respected well enough for Tony to let him live alone for over a decade. And Jeff, was very much wanted.

Charlie was cast aside. Cast out. He was unwanted because he was useless.

He found value in protecting things he loves - in protecting Jeff and protecting Babe.

That’s all he has

And yes, Babe loves him but as the show’s established their communication is awful and Charlie is insecure with their relationship. He might have mentioned it because of Willy, but I think it’s always been there.

Why? Because he gives and gives and gives and it doesn’t always seem like Babe cares the same way.

So all Charlie KNOWS he has, is his ability to give up everything for Jeff and/or Babe’s safety.

It’s flawed as shit. But so are Babe’s actions, Kenta’s mindset, Pete’s willingness to screw anything that resembles Way.
