Sodor Cats Lore #4: Language.
Alphabet:
The written language of the Sodor Cats: structure and examples:
Word order: SVO (subjectΒ βΒ verbΒ βΒ object).
This uses the classic English SVO patternΒ βΒ itβs intuitive, fits well with human speech, but still feels distinctively βtheirsβ for the cats, who, although they understand humans, construct phrases according to their own rules.
Structure: [Who] + [what they do] + [what or whom the action is directed at].
Example sentences in the Sodor Catsβ language:
To make it clearer, there are three levels here: βhow it sounds to the catsβ, βtransliterationβ (so you can read it), and βtranslationβ.
βMrow-vix tash-kloon mur-zil.β
Mrow-vix = a male cat (subject)
tash-kloon = catches (verb)
mur-zil = a mouse (object) β βThe cat catches a mouse.β
βFlin-zar tash-glor mur-nar.β
lin-zar = a female cat (subject)
tash-glor = carries (verb)
mur-nar = a branch (object) β βThe female cat carries a branch.β
βZor-mux tash-plin mur-dor.β
Zor-mux = an elder (subject)
tash-plin = tells (verb)
mur-dor = a legend (object) β βThe elder tells a legend.β
How this works within the worldβs logic:
SVO makes the language easy to learn. Since not all cats can write, the basic structure needs to be as predictable as possible: first who, then what they do, then what the action is directed at. This lowers the barrier to entry: even if a cat knows only a few words, they can still construct understandable phrases.
Connection to human speech. The cats understand English, so SVO looks βalmost like humans doβ to them, but the words are their ownΒ βΒ this emphasises their distinctiveness and culture.
The spoken form can be a bit more flexible. In conversation, cats may sometimes change the intonation or put the object at the beginning for emphasis (βA mouseβ¦ the tomcat catchesβ), but the written form is always strictly SVO, so that any literate cat can read and understand it.
Vocabulary:
Phrase templates (SVO structure)
Mrow-vix tash-zor glar-mok. β The tomcat guards the stream.
Flin-zar tash-nar kor-til. β The female cat seeks the root.
Zor-mux tash-plin mur-dor. β The elder recounts the legend.
Pik-nar tash-glor nar-zok. β The apprentice carries the branch.
Dor-klin tash-vix vix-dor. β The boundary guard hides in the clearing.
Sodor Cats Lore #3: Mail.
The Sodor Catsβ Postal System:
Name and concept: Official name: The Sodor Forest Postal Service. Motto: βFeelings at the tip of the quill, a message on the wings of the wind.β
Organization: The pack includes a special group of cats β the Postal Cats. They are not just couriers but a kind of poets and psychologists of the forest. Their main task is not just to deliver a letter but to help those who cannot write to put feelings and thoughts into words.
Hierarchy of Postal Cats:
Apprentices (underage): help with sorting and delivering within the settlement, learn the art of formulating thoughts. Salary: 12 gold.
Novice Postal Cats: take simple orders β short letters and notes. Salary: 42 gold.
Experienced Postal Cats: handle long and emotional messages, can advise clients. Salary: 50 gold.
Professional Postal Cats (word masters): the most respected members of the SFPS. They are entrusted with the most important and delicate letters β declarations of love, farewell words, and official communications between settlements. Salary: 92 gold.
Letterβsending process:
Client visit to the Postal Burrow (the main post office, located in a large natural cave or under the roots of an old oak tree).
Consultation with a Postal Cat: the client explains what they want to convey. The Postal Cat asks leading questions to capture the tone and depth of feelings: βDo you want the recipient to feel your longing? Or to emphasize that you will always be there?β
Message composition: the Postal Cat writes the text on specially prepared bark or dried broad leaves (depending on the importance of the letter), using ink made from berry juice and charcoal.
Decoration: the letter may be adorned with a simple pattern or symbol (a heart, a star, a paw print) that reflects the essence of the message.
Delivery:
Within the settlement: the letter is delivered by the Postal Cat or an apprentice.
To other settlements or distant parts of the forest: a rolledβup message is attached to the leg of a specially trained postal bird. The birds know the main routes and postal burrows (βstationsβ) across the forest.
Infrastructure:
Postal Burrows: main offices where Postal Cats work. Located in natural caves, hollows of huge trees, or under roots. Inside, there are shelves with letters, supplies for writing, and a resting area for birds.
Postal Stations: small shelters along the routes of postal birds. Here, birds can rest and wait out bad weather. Usually, these are niches in rocks or secluded spots in tree crowns, equipped with a roof of leaves and moss.
Signal Trees: tall trees decorated with bright ribbons made of bark or feathers. They serve as landmarks for postal birds, showing where the nearest postal station or burrow is.
Postal birds:
Pigeons β for longβdistance routes;
Robins and jays β for short and mediumβdistance routes;
Owls β for night mail (a rarity, used only for important messages).
Materials and currency:
Paper: not used. Instead:
smooth bark of young trees (for important letters);
dried broad leaves (for short notes);
thin slates (for very important and durable messages).
Ink: made from:
blueberry or blackberry juice (blue/purple);
charcoal (black);
oak bark decoction (brown);
red raspberry juice (red).
Writing tools: thin sharpened sticks made of hardwood or bird feathers.
Currency: gold β small shiny pieces of pyrite or quartz found in caves and streams.
Culture and traditions
The First Letter Ceremony: when a kitten writes a letter independently for the first time, they bring it to the Postal Burrow, and a Postal Cat solemnly attaches it to the βTree of Messagesβ β an old oak near the entrance of the Burrow. This symbolizes entering adulthood.
Day of Gratitude to Postal Birds: once a season, all settlements hold a festival in honor of pigeons and jays. The birds are treated to the best berries and grains, and their nests are decorated with flowers.
βSilent Messageβ: if a letter is very personal and confidential, it is sealed with a drop of resin and marked with a special sign β three intersecting lines. No one but the recipient has the right to open it.
Note: - Inspiration β Violet Evergarden.

Happy 5/5!
Idea:
(May 30, 2025)
Paint in "Sodor Cats".
A little news:
The stories are no longer canon, and a lot of what I've posted here isn't canon either. I'm currently working on an idea to create an animated series, but I'm honestly not sure if I'll stick with it. I'm autistic, and I have hyperfixations, which in my case are projects (both fan-made and original), and they change over time. It's possible that "Sodor Cats" will follow a similar path, but I'm going to give it a try.
Happy 4/4!
What do you think about The Fat Controller?
He is very kind and loves his engines.
He's a psychopath and treats engines like trash.
The answer is in the comments.

Fear of Rain...

TTTE Theory: Are James and Henry kindred spirits?
β οΈWARNING: This is my personal opinion and character analysis!β οΈ
I watched the movie "Adventures Begins" not so long ago and I felt sorry for the two characters, Henry and James. Henry because of the tunnel scene, which is obvious. And James, firstly, because of the wooden brakes, which I didn't understand why he had them when all the other engines had cast-iron ones. And secondly: because of Gordon's bulling and Edward's inaction (I want to talk about this in a separate post).
So what am I talking about? I also thought not so long ago and realized that Henry and James are not as different as they seem at first glance. What do I mean by that? I have their personalities in the present tense and from the past.
Today's Henry looks like James from the past, yes, not much, but there are similarities, such as he often makes sad faces while mumbling like Henry. I know this can't be called their direct similarity, but it's an interesting detail.
And today's James looks like Henry from the past. This is shown very well in the episode "The Sad Story of Henry" when Henry talks about his paintwork, just like James would say about his.
So why am I saying all this? It seems to me that Henry and James could be best friends or even brothers because of such similarities, but the problem is that they don't know how to talk, what do I mean? I mean, they often bully each other and have no sympathy for each other, although they both probably understand what it's like when one of them gets into an accident, especially Henry with his severe anxiety. But instead of supporting each other, they prefer to mock each other, which is absolutely wrong.
What do you think about this? Write in the comments, I will be interested to know your opinion. And you can tell me where I'm wrong, and I'll understand.
And yes, would you mind if I write theories sometimes? :)
