so of course every snake that has the instinct to warn humans of its presence gets killed, and only the snakes that bite first and dont make themselves known get to survive. a human who's been bitten is too worried about his swelling ankle to decapitate a snake with a shovel.

I’ve seen a misuse of these terms (especially by people from the US and on platforms that are US-centric) so I wrote an explanation on how to use them (aka me telling people what these terms they’re probably using to be racist actually mean. Please get this post to Trump, he really really needs it). 

Hispanic refers to a Spanish person (as in, from Spain) or someone who speaks Spanish. Before Spain (España) was called Spain, it was called Hispania since the Romans. Therefore, everyone whose native language is Spanish could be considered Hispanic. Usually, if you’re talking about people who speak Spanish (natively or not), you’d say they’re hispanohablantes or Spanish-speakers.

Latino means everyone who is from a country or speaks a language that originated from Latin. A French or Italian person could be referred as a Latino by definition, but I understand that languages and words evolve away from their original meaning. For example, when you’re talking about the latin poets, you’d usually find Virgil and Dante there, not Ruben Darío, you know?

Now, what can we do with these two words? Talking about America, it is usually divided in three major zones. North America (US and up), Central America (México) and South America (Guatemala, El Salvador, and down). I’ve seen people making México part of North America, so the division that I am presenting here might not be objective.

People who were born in an American country whose official language comes from Latin (Portuguese and Spanish) are called Latino American. (Brazilian people are Latino American but aren’t Hispano American).

For example, I live in Mexico and speak Spanish as first language, which makes me Latina and Hispanic, and I just happen to be a mix of white Spaniards and native Mesoamerican people, which doesn’t necessarily means I’m Latina or Hispanic.
