Rich people are literally just lying about being good at money btw
Things like overdraft fees, late fees, parking tickets, fines, subscription renewals, legal fees, penalty fees, sales and discounts, lawsuits - these are things that all cease to matter in any material way once you have enough money
To Jeff Bezos, a parking meter, a plane ticket, and a private jet all effectively cost the same amount of money: none
i made a post like this before but I can't find it now. so. I'll just redo it.
What's the first "big news story" you remember from when you were a kid?
It's something I love to ask mixed-aged groups sometimes because I think it's really interesting to see the responses. I've gotten answers from the Olympics of [whatever year] to Watergate to more recent stuff from my niblings.
My first news thing I remember is the OJ Simpson trial. I vaguely remember watching the news with my grandparents before that, but that's the first story I remember, in part because my second grade teacher had us go play so she could watch the verdict 😂
I remember walking down the street and seeing a sign protesting George W. Bush’s war on Iraq, so I think that.
Challenger
i remember we were listening to it on the PA in elementary school. Maybe... third grade? Don't actually remember anything ABOUT it in school, just that we were listening to it.
Then i got home, and my grandmother had the tv on and it just kept replaying the explosion over and over.
There are two for me, both from late 1989 (I was almost 7 years old).
1. Fall of the Berlin Wall (November 9th)
2. The Loma Prieta earthquake (October 17th)
The second was extremely memorable to me (tho I didn't know it was called that until I just looked it up) because... okay, so my family is sitting around the TV watching the baseball World Series, live broadcast, between the Oakland As and the San Fran Giants when the commentators get funny looks on their faces of vague alarm and then the entire feed cuts out.
Well, my grandparents live in San Francisco (I was raised in New York) and my dad is from there (he was not present watching this game with us, as my parents were divorced and I was raised by my mom) and I'm very familiar with the 1906 San Francisco earthquakeI because I'm the kind of kid who finds major disasters macabrely fascinating so cue some collective panic, cause at this point we have no idea how bad this earthquake is, how many people may have died, and if my grandparents and uncle and aunt who all live in that area are okay.
It was quite sometime later (that night? Next day? I'm not sure) that we got confirmation everyone was fine, the earthquake had just shaken them a bit and a couple pictures fell off the walls.
But yeah it was pretty memorable both for the "we were literally watching when it happened" and the "oh no is my family okay."
(From Wikipedia: "Television viewers saw the video signal begin to break up, heard McCarver repeat a sentence as the shaking distracted him, and heard McCarver's colleague Al Michaels exclaim, "I'll tell you what, we're having an earth – ."[63] At that moment, the signal from Candlestick Park was lost.[95]")
I actually do think we should discourage women from becoming housewives. Do not become financially dependent on a man. That's how a lot of women ended up dead over the years. A man gets violent suddenly and you have to choose between homelessness or potentially dying at his hand because you have an enormous gap in your resume and no degrees or certifications or anything that will help you pursue a career that will allow you to be financially independent. He owns your bank account. His name is probably the one on the car. Try and leave and he can report it stolen. Where will you go then?
Don't become a housewife.
And if you do become a housewife, take steps to protect yourself. Make sure you’re legally married, for starters; stay-at-home girlfriends have very little legal recourse to claim their partner’s assets in a breakup. Make sure your name is on the house deed/rental agreement, and have your car in your name, even if your spouse is paying for it. Have your spouse transfer money every month into an account solely in your name, so you can buy yourself things without needing permission, but also so you can save up to leave if needed.
If your spouse fights you on any of this, then don’t quit your job. The tradwife to poverty pipeline is real, and so is financial abuse.
also, many women/people experience controlling behaviour and domestic violence from their partner for the first time during pregnancy. don’t risk thinking “he’s just stressed, it’ll get better when the baby comes” because it won’t. neither you and your child will ever be safe with that man. get out as early and safely as you can
all women attracted to men should watch this video before marrying or cohabitating.
‘capitalism works’ factoid actually untrue. the 62 people who own half the world’s wealth are outliers and should be eaten.
Absolutely nuts how they made up a number for this satire post and the correction is that reality is *more absurd* than the number they chose
no i’m afraid it’s even worse than that. 62 was correct in 2016 when the original post was made.

Whisky Tango Hotel: Late Breakfast
I'm attempting something like a web comic lol. I'm calling it Whisky Tango Hotel It's about me working at a hotel but nothing really interesting has happened to me at work to write about so the comics are based more on random thoughts I have rather than real events. I'm going to post a comic ideally once a week. I have a backlog so I can stick to it for at least the next 4-5 fridays.
Single panels under the cut.
goo goo dolls if they were in dune: and i don’t want the worm to see me
Let's say I really wanted to reduce the number of children who die in car accidents. Car accidents are really bad, right? Nobody disagrees about that. And it would be much better for both the environment and the kids' health if they spent more time walking, or taking the bus. Perfectly reasonable. More cars off the road, safer roads, fewer kids getting hurt, healthier kids. A win-win!
Therefore, let's ban children from traveling by car and require all cars to have a scanner on the door that scans the government ID of everyone who gets in the car to make sure no kids are in there. After all, kids get hurt in car accidents all the time! We need to ban this right away!
Ok like. Imagine life without ads. You wake up, check your messages across a variety of apps, no ads. You get up and put on the tv while you prep your breakfast, no ads. Maybe you drive somewhere and switch on the radio, no ads. Maybe you drive a long distance, yet somehow, not a single billboard on your path. You pick up a newspaper or magazine to pass the time, no advertisements only articles. You turn on your game console, the home screen is just about your games, no ads to buy more. You open a streaming app, you don't pay extra for no ads, there's just no ads ever.
Think about how much of your time is spent looking at ads. "Download ublock" yeah I know, I have. But that doesn't change that the world is covered with endless advertising. Imagine never seeing that again. How much better our lives would be.

It’s unfortunate that MDZS isn’t mainstream enough to reference in casual offline conversation, because “this is what killed Nie Mingjue” is thee best possible way to describe an offensively grating piece of music and there is simply no normie equivalent.
man sometimes friendship really is just "I saw this and knew it would give you psychic damage. please respond with agony" and then they do. and it's great
