2015 have been a amazing year full of promises, 2016 is looking even more exciting. Take a look at the wonderful dinner parties our hosts are organising for you!Â
https://socialbelly.com
âI'm originally from Melbourne Australia. I came to London three years ago planning to stay here for two years... oh well here I am still now :)â

Nazareth-Social Bellyâs Host
âI grew up surrounded by traditional Ethiopian cuisine, joining my mother to the market, and watching her cook with the beautiful fresh ingredients. I used to not enjoy cooking too much. Cooking came to my life just 4,5 years ago after which I have been practicing it passionately. I consider myself a self taught cook.â
âIn Ethiopia, we have about 180 days including Every Wednesday and Fridays  and other special days a year in which we avoid eating meat. Ethiopian vegetarian food is very special. We have unique flavours and spice combinations. Many people say itâs the best in the world! We feast on meat but Ethiopian food also caters naturally many kind of diets like vegetarian, vegan and gluten free.â
âTwo and a half years ago I started selling my food at street food at markets. People were loving it and soon we decided to try out a restaurant with friends. During this time I kept on organising cooking courses and private catering. This autumn I found Social Belly. I loved the idea of hosting at my own home! Although I have to admit at first I thought it might feel awkward bringing people to my home. After my first dinner party I completely changed my mind. The evening felt like hosting friends.â
âMy next dinner party will be on January 16th. It will be mixed menu of various Ethiopian dishes and including meat. Join my table and come learn more about the amazing Ethiopian cuisine.â

A wonderful night of inspiring people, great conversations and delicious food. âTime flies when you are having a good time... and this is exactly what happened at the Design & Art-themed dinner party by Social Belly. Indeed, we all rushed off to make the last train but I wish we could have stayed longer.
Itâs not just that food was exceptional, but the people and the conversations that surrounded the table were great. It felt like we all had something in common and a lot to share.
Maria (the host), is inspiring and friendly. I arrived at the dinner party a little earlier, so we had the opportunity to speak a little longer. This was the first time she was cooking for a such a large group, and it was clear how passionate she was about cooking and meeting new people.
There was a lot of food and plenty of drinks too. We didnât even manage to finish it all.
The starter (caramelised scallops on cauliflower purĂŠe with pancetta) was just perfect. It was all the more impressive as she had never cooked scallops before.
The main course was so tasty: she prepared a crispy swordfish, along with polenta chips, grilled asparagus, and a winter salad.
To finish this amazing dinner, we tasted Mariaâs pannacotta with pomegranate syrup.
There was so much to shareâŚNot only did we talk about Design & Art, but for instance also about Japanese culture. Lisa, one of the guests, had lived there for 5 years, so for those interested in this country, I advise you to check her blog (dewdropsonmomiji.com).
Nick recommended a book, Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less, and made it a must read. Petra & Marta shared their experience in the Food & Design Masterâs course, Milan gave us some techniques for public speaking and talked about his experiences. I have to say that it couldnâ t have come in a better time as I have a speech to do next week. Rosalind told us that she is going to host a dumpling cooking and an Indonesian dinner party through Social Belly soon, which I am very much looking forward to already.
Actually, it is great to know that we can share passions with people weâd never had met without Social Belly. Even though we didnât exchange numbers, Iâll never forget this experience, and Iâm looking forward to meeting new people over amazing dinners!â

Social Belly: #LostLondonChronicles #2

âI was 18 when we moved to the Philippines. My life there became polarised. The past years I had seen a lot of visible poverty - it is shocking and it affects you. I felt like I need to give back to the community. I started helping out a little, playing football and teaching English in orphanages and with children living on the landfills. The feeling is indescribable to actually be able to affect someone's life, even in a small way. It fills you up with more warmth and happiness than anything else in the world. On the other side, in contrast to helping I was also going out a lot. Long nights in the streets of Manila. The Filipinos are truly friendly and they really want to get to know you, so meeting people was always very easy. Always looking forward going back there.â
âThe past 2 years I have been studying in Switzerland traveling back and fort to Asia to my family. Working for Social Belly has been another great chapter in my life. Together with our amazing team we are bringing like-minded people together and changing peoples lives one meal at a time.â

âWhen I was nine we moved to Seoul. Korea was in the forefront of the technology wave. They had enormous shopping centres filled with massive games with blinking lights and sounds of battling, dancing, racing. My friends and used to spend hours there. I made really good friends there and we still keep in touch. Games and friends - good times for a teenage boy! :)â
âCouple of years later we moved to India - which became the big love of my life. There is so much energy and character there. The mixture of million people, intense noise, heat, spices. You will never get bored! Indian people are very warm. They invite you to their homes and share of their own - even if it's not much and they are genuinely thankful of what they have. I feel this taught me to appreciate the little things, and that material wealth never equals happiness.â

âWe moved to Asia when I was three. I grew up living in Japan, Korea, India, Philippines, Malaysia, always in capitals, in the biggest liveliest cities in the world. From an early age on I remember very specific things - the intense smoky smell of Yakitori in Tokyo, the roar of the marketplace in Mumbai and the first time I tasted Nasi Goreng in Malaysia . It is funny what kind of things you can catch up from other cultures.â
âJapan was the first country we lived in. I remember going to the Supermarket with my mom and the tastings... eels, octopus, baby fried crabs, seaweed and many more sea dwelling delights. I learned a lot about food in there, and I do think that Japanese cuisine is the best in the world. Actually, I miss everything about that country.â
Another beautiful story of humanity London is a city of love! Â :)
Thank you from the team at Social Belly
Have you heard this phrase: âGratitude is the key to happiness.â It is proven that those who express gratitude can have more positive emotions, stronger relationships and even better health. It sounds so simple. Still, how often do we take things for granted?Â
When we pause for a moment and look around, there are so many things to be grateful of, even small ones, a good night sleep, a fun lunch with collegues or relaxing yoga class. As Thanksgiving is celebrated this week also here at Social Belly we took a moment to ask ourselves the question, What am I grateful for?Â
