good morning it's sunday!! i did a bit more work last night but then allowed myself to do Crime and start thinking abt the next quilt i wanna make hehehe i have accumulated soooo many thrifted men's xxxl 100% cotton button-down shirts and they are crying out to become something new and cozy. and maybe even... autumnal. we'll see. hard to get in the mood for that when it's gonna be *checks watch* 108 degrees on wednesday. anyway okay i'm at a coffee shop ready to face the list for today:
update work plan
figure out talk details & email to r+s: title, blurb, bio, photos
book work: move everything relevant from diss version over into new outline / make tbr list
finish drafting research statement
email j re: arts center collab
finalize grad sem syllabus
fix hose spigot
finish cutting up shirts / find the ones i already disassembled
text s re: coffee tomorrow
renew rx
alrighty yesterday did not involve more Work-work because we realized that i messed upppp and just... completely forgot to request departmental approval for that conference, which means the department now needs to retroactively grant that approval if i want to have a hope of seeing any money from the college for the trip. and we don't know how to do that lmao. so i spent an hour writing a BUSINESS MEMO for the college and compiling a bunch of information and documentation beyond all the stuff i already submitted after i got back. and then in penance for putting something new on top of the pile of absolute chaos my chair's been dealing with this month i hopped onto one of the 7 million running dept planning docs (this one for a surprise ad hoc committee she put me on on thursday) and left a bunch of notes/ideas before our meeting next week since i've already done work for 2 other committees that is maybe helpful for this one. please let me be helpful i am really not used to being the Problem Person and i feel horrible about it ;___; mea culpaaaaa.
HOWEVER. today! i'm actually kinda ripping. woke up early and did some brain-off tenure file work, watered the garden, waited until 8 o'clock on the dot and then mowed both yards and assembled/charged the new stupid weed wacker (i hate a weed wacker but here we are) and excavated the garden edging which has been completely consumed by weeds since i got back, gathered 2 bags of yard waste, and then came in and took my second ice-cold shower of the past 16 hours because it was already almost 90 degrees at 9:30am.
i have also!! placed a craigslist inquiry that i don't think is gonna go anywhere (but what if this person IS willing to drive a used brent cxc wheel to joplin so i don't have to drive all the way up to kc! one never knows!), stripped my bed and did 2 loads of laundry, ran and unloaded the dishwasher, sent 2 conference follow-up emails, ordered the course notebooks for my undergrad class, paid an old invoice, finally located the plumbing tape (v leaky spigot in the back but i have been refusing to buy a new roll bc i knew i had some!!) and the piece de resistance: edited and put a book chapter to bed for now :-) at long last.
i have a sprawling weekend list i'm working off but i think for the rest of the day--it's almost 4pm now--i'd like to...
schedule-send emails: ml re: check-in chat / j re: arts center collab / b re: spec coll visit
fold laundry & remake bed
cook beef bulgogi for dinnerrr
figure out talk details & email to r+s: title, blurb, bio, photos
wrangle the pile of euros sitting in the kitchen
1h chapter work - organization/outlining i think? or placing some ILLs
1h brainstorming for this course i'm coteaching in spring bc my co-conspirator just emailed me this afternoon and i want to make sure i'm pulling my weight here
OR 2h of syllabus work for the grad sem i'm teaching in... 5 days. don't look at me this has been the most chaotic semester run-up i've ever had.
coffee shop this morning where i finished drafting a research talk i'm giving next month, home for a zoom committee meeting in the afternoon, and then my friend and i just spent THREE BEAUTIFUL HOURS at the thermal spa as our last hurrah before classes start on monday 🙂↕️

also made the rookie mistake of checking my damn work email like 5m before my hot yoga class started last night and discovered that due to circumstances that were both unanticipated but also unsurprising they're putting a whole grad seminar worth of students into my (already overenrolled) grad sem this fall. i could have said no but like... at some point someone has to say yes and the situation is nobody's fault, so. plus there's a chance it won't be all of the students from this canceled seminar. it's fine just put it on the pile with everything else.
me, already feeling overwhelmed by what is about to be probably the most stressful 4 months of my life to date: i should set up a home pottery studio actually
all settled back in and i woke up at a normal hour this morning (rather than the 3:45 of the past few days) so i think the worst of my jetlag is past!! i have pottery and then yoga this afternoon bc i need a somatic reset lol but before then i'm gonna try to finish prepping my undergrad course and submit all my post-trip travel documentation. i have so much good friend time to look forward to next week ;___; taking sherry out for fancy dinner as a thank-you for the dogsitting and the airport lift on sunday, getting coffee w my housesitter/former undergrad tuesday, pots on wednesday and my dear friend who was traveling last week will be back so we can yap!! and then i'm going to the sauna to catch up w a different friend on friday. also department orientation stuff on thursday so i'll have to head to campus, which is less fun but it will be really nice to see everyoneeeee and good to clean my office, pick up my bus pass, etc etc.
i've honestly kinda been grinding since i got back and that is good and necessary but i will be relieved to get one whole big task (the undergrad class prep) crossed off... then i can attend to the grad sem. oof.
jk first i must commit financial crimes on dickblick dot com
and now....the moment youve all been waiting for..... juno photos
i'm home!! after a truly exhausting 23h of travel 🫠 sherry and j picked me up at the airport and dropped me off at home around 8:30 aka 3:30am in my brain--as i feared my car battery was dead so i got a jump right when i finished dragging my bags inside--motor turned over fine and i went for a quick drive to give it some juice so HOPEFULLY my errand run this morning will go unimpeded. tbd!! my angelic housesitter left me some snacks and a huge beautiful bouquet of flowers and a pristine house so all i had to do was put sheets on my bed and take a shower.... unconscious by 11, wide awake again at 12, then at 4, then at 5, at which point i gave up, got up, and made my giant get-it-together list for the day. it's now 6 and i think i'll start by getting laundry going and unpacking.

lowkey hauling today!!! had a slow start that i made slower by going to a cafe for breakfast but i eventually made it to the library where i sent emails for genuinely almost 2 hours straight and did a little more work on this proposal i absolutely should not be thinking about rn before pivoting to teaching. i'm almost done prepping this undergrad class--i need to set up and publish the canvas site, update the coursebook, and maybe write one more assignment sheet before i can call it good and ignore it until the monday classes start.
im getting pizza dinner rn and then i will go back to the hotel, shower, and attempt to pack all my shit + a framed and bubble-wrapped leaf from the nuremberg chronicle (lmao) into my carry-on luggage. then SLEEP bc i have a 22 hour travel day tomorrow 😭😭
hello from the most magical day of this vacation yet!! natural history museum was yesterday and very fun. today was baden baden which was perfect--train then relaxing thermal spa then lunch and a long walk before the afternoon train back. when we got back to freiburg i noticed an antiquarian bookshop (!!) the employee asked us why we were in freiburg and when we told him what we worked on, he said "... do you want to see some more books?" and then led us out of the building, around the corner down to a small basement unit PACKED with rare books including a ton of early print (16-17c) that was apparently from the vatican??? and then just left us there to PLAY for over an hour lmao it was absolutely unreal. we went for döner #85354 and ice cream for dessert after we finally pried ourselves out of the basement to collect our purchases and now i'm back at my hotel, showered and absolutely wipeddddd. friends are traveling home tomorrow but i have one more day that i think i will maybe spend at the library here.
conference DONE! i got back to my room last night after (breakfast + panel + long book yap + lunch + panel + panel) pizza + ice cream + walk + saying goodbye to some friends, slapped the dnd sign on the door, took an ice cold shower (because it was 104 degrees yesterdayyyy), and was sound asleep before 10pm. bedside light still on when i woke up.
today: meeting up w friends to do a museum + dinner later but we collectively agreed to take the whole morning off. ✔️
tomorrow: THERMAL! SPA! ✔️
sunday: work/bedrot day tbh
monday: travel home~
i have twelve thousand things to follow up on but luckily i've been keeping a running list in my notebook so i think i'll do some of those this morning and then maybe attemptttt to start some teaching prep since classes start in TWO WEEKS for me. nightmare!!!!!
goodies from the augustinermuseum!!!
last leg of this trip tomorrow!!! bus to plane to tram to train will get me to GERMANY where i get to hang out with my friends for a whole week+ eeeee
